Outside of Jesus, Siddhartha Gautama, better known as "The Buddha," is perhaps the most revered spiritual figure in history. Indeed, even many Christians have come to admire and revere the teachings attributed to this mysterious figure. But what did he actually teach? And what are we to make of the enormous religion that remains his greatest legacy? On today's episode, we invite Dr. Tyler McNabb to help us wrestle through the teachings of Buddhism and the enigmatic sage who supposedly taught the way to Enlightenment.

Is the Reformed Calvinistic? How does reformed epistemology differ specifically from something like scott oliphints "covenantal epistemology"? Is Reformed epistemology plausible outside our western context? What is classical theism? How does it compare or contrast with Buddhist thought? Can a buddhist be a classical theist? Neoclassical theists affirm that God knows the future. Many neoclassical theists, like myself, also say that God is passible, and has a rich emotional life. But there might be a problem here. Dr. Tyler McNabb joins us to discuss the details. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. Jamie claims that it's not that he is failing to make his case for God, it's that Scott is unfairly rejecting reasonable evidence! What do you think, is this a legitimate gripe or a convenient deflection? In this episode, Scott & Jamie explore epistemology, and its application to their arguments. In "Oh the Humanity", Scott talks about the difference between "prescriptive" and "descriptive", and how the distinction exposes a flaw in an argument from professional Christian apologist William Lane Craig. As further study Jamie recommends "Religious Epistemology" by Tyler McNabb, and Scott recommends "Why Everyone (Else) is a Hypocrite: Evolution and the Modular Mind" by Robert Kurzban. Many of us change positions throughout our lives; political, philosophical, and religious. I have spent considerable time on this podcast discussing my journey from atheism to theism, and eventually right on through to Catholicism. I have, however, also hinted occasionally at my development in political thought, from liberal, to libertarian, and, finally, to common good conservatism. This episode -- in which I am joined by Dr. Tyler McNabb (bio and website here)-- details some of the arguments against liberal political philosophy (and especially libertarianism) that we ultimately found convincing, before we turn to an interesting new article published by McNabb entitled By Who's Authority: A Political Argument for God's Existence, which critiques secular frameworks for grounding political authority and provides a plausible theistic alternative. Please enjoy. Mentioned Resources/Related Episodes We mentioned Patrick Deneen's excellent book Why Liberalism Failed. Also, What Is Marriage? Too, Michael Huemer's book The Problem of Political Authority. And finally, Tyler's book on religious epistemology. Edward Feser (who we mentioned in the episode) explains why he departed libertarianism, as well, and offers further critiques, here. Brian Besong offers a great introductory text to traditional natural law theory; and the Cambridge Companion is fantastic, as well. Tim Hsaio provides a critique of consent-based ethical theory. https://www.chroniclesofstrength.com/sunday-school-from-agnosticism-to-catholicism-with-dr-tyler-mcnabb/ https://www.chroniclesofstrength.com/the-philosophical-approach-to-god-with-dr-robert-koons/ The Pat Flynn Show If you enjoyed this episode, it would mean the world to me if you could subscribe to, and leave a review for, The Pat Flynn show on iTunes HERE or Stitcher HERE. This Theist/Atheist Discussion features a number of guests, most notably Tyler McNabb and Stephen Law (who recently had an exchange on Unbelievable? on the subject of Reformed Epistemology). The other guests joining are: Cameron Bertuzzi (myself), Josh Parikh, Perry Hendricks, Brett Lunn, Ben Watkins, Ben Bavar. The topic of discussion is Alvin Plantinga's (in)famous Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. The argument roughly states that the probability our cognitive faculties are reliable given Naturalism & Evolution is low. Hence, the person that believes N&E has a defeater for all of their beliefs, including belief in N&E. Belief in N&E is therefore self-referentially incoherent and cannot rationally be accepted. Chef Tyler McNabb became chef at the fabled Holly Hill Inn in Midway, Kentucky before he was old enough to have a quarter-life crisis. Perhaps because, as he tells listeners in this podcast, he began cooking and entertaining with both his grandmothers in Cynthiana, Kentucky as a young child. His official bio declares him to be “one of the few lucky people who never struggled with knowing what to do with their lives.” Tyler inherited his grandmothers’ love of feeding people—along with recipes for “neon green” lime pickles and a sensibility about how to use fine Kentucky ingredients to perfect Kentucky food.
