"Healed Healers"
"One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him." Acts 3:1-10, NIV

May the God of Wonders Bless You!
Peter, through the power of the Spirit and by the authority given to him by Jesus, was a channel of blessing to this broken man. It wasn't his power, but the power of Jesus. Like the blind man Jesus healed in Matthew 21, this man was healed so that the works of God might be displayed in him, pointing to the Messianic authority of Jesus. In Christ, God gives people so much more than they expect or deserve. Notice the progression of joy in [v.8] – the man stood firm, began to walk, then moved into an all-out sprint into the presence of God, leaping and praising Him all the way.

The Church is God's plan for spreading the gospel. We'll look at how Peter and John were able to boldly share what they had seen and heard from Jesus and discover how we can be bold to share our own stories today.

Peter Performs a Miracle
It has never been more important for God’s children to realize the church is more than a building. In a time where people want to get back into a routine where businesses are open, schools are instructing and beaches are packed, make sure your desire to see God use you in your routine is first and foremost on your list. We're continuing our New Year's message series with a message about "Being a Place of Healing." This series is called "A Decade to Make a Difference," and it will focus on the values and practices that God calls us to ... and I'm wanting to highlight four of these for Bethel in the coming years. This week we'll talk about How healing happens, how it fits into our life as a church, and how we experience it in our lives today. As I'm sure you know, there is some controversy about the role of healing today -- questions surround the role of the miraculous, how "spiritual healing" relates to the healing we look for from science and medicine, and how we respond when we ask for divine healing and it doesn't come.
In Jesus Christ is the power of transformation and healing. By the power of the Spirit and of God using others to spur us on, we can become all we are destined to be.

Healing in the Power of the Spirit Date: July 27, 2014 Scripture: Acts 3:1-10 Big Idea: God gets great honor when He heals us even without any faith of our own. 1. The Holy Spirit uses us during the most ordinary times of our lives if we will be ready (1) a. They committed their normal day-to-day lives to God b. They were committed to being used even if it was inconvenient c. They were committed to being used even if they failed Lesson: God uses people who are always at the ready to be His hand extended into hurting lives 2. Sometimes we ask for God’s second best (3) a. The beggar asked for money when God wanted to give him healing b. He looked to a man for assistance, instead of looking to God Lesson: Always seek God’s best answer as it relates to your healing 3. The Holy Spirit chooses to use people…warts and all…in healing (4) a. God chooses to use real live people to answer our prayers Lesson: Expect that God will use our pasts and experiences to be the answer to someone’s need …even healing 4. Healing is only through the power of Jesus himself (6) a. Peter recognized that Jesus was still alive and active Lesson: God does not need the faith of the recipient to heal—it is the power of Jesus not the person. Lesson: God does not need the spiritual strength of the one praying—it is the power of Jesus not the person. (3:16) 5. Healing always brings honor to God, not man (8-10) Lesson: God heals in a timing that brings the greatest amount of honor to God 7) God heals in a way that brings the greatest amount of honor to God i. How does God heal? 1. God sometimes heals immediately 2. God sometimes heals slowly 3. God sometimes heals with doctors and medicine 4. God sometimes heals by bringing wisdom to us to treat our bodies better 5. God sometimes decides not to heal Healing Service:

Faith in Jesus is healing power.
We read the story about Peter and John, a healing at the Temple in Jerusalem, the apostles preaching to the crowds, and the Temple authorities who are quite annoyed by all of this. It's one of the early accounts of the church's post-Pentecost conflicts with the religious powers-that-be. It's a story about authority and power, who has it, who doesn't, and who will do whatever it takes to keep it.

Pastor Daniel Bracken begins his series Preparing for the Ingathering with a sermon out of Acts 3:1-10 entitled, "The Name of Jesus".
In scripture, God describes what the world is supposed to look like, but our current state is far from the described perfection. How are we, as Christians, to view the brokenness in the world and how should we then act? Senior Pastor Craig Bailey at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, in Charleston, SC, answers these question through his exposition on Acts 3:1-10. First, we are to be prepared to give hope. This requires Gospel centered lives. I Peter reminds us "to always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you" (ESV). Second, God's people must look at brokenness. Brokenness does not just look like a lame beggar. Brokenness can also play out in emotional, social, spiritual, economic, and other ways as well. Third, we must call the broken to look at us. Christians are a testament to the healing power of Christ. Who better for someone who is broken and longing for healing to look at than you? Listen to the full sermon here.
