This week, we're chatting to Robert Whitlow, prolific writer of over 20 bestselling novels. His new one is 'Guilty Until Innocent', a legal thriller that looks an an old case being reopened, and the two lawyers who have to prove the convicted's innocence against the odds. His debut novel, 'The List', was adapted into a successful movie starring Malcolm McDowell. In fact, four of Robert's novels have been adapted for the big screen, and Robert still divides his time between writing and working as a local attorney. 20250403- John Michael Finley Talks 'Faith of Angels' on That Kevin Show by That KEVIN Show
Trending with Timmerie - Catholic Principals applied to today's experiences.
Timmerie addresses a show that you might want to steer clear of: Netflix’s new series Adolescence, which explores the crisis of boys today. It’s based on a story of a 13-year-old boy, Jamie, who murders a classmate after being rejected. Yes, that’s the plot, and the show tries to explore why he did it: including his deep hurt from bullying, the isolation of modern boys, and impurity. Some of the content, while important to talk about, may not be appropriate for sensitive ears. Timmerie’s big takeaway is that this show is part of the problem, not the solution. We’ve become so desensitized to disturbing content that we keep craving something more shocking. But what’s really chilling is that the show nails one thing: Boys are very much hurting. Badly. And the culture is not making it any better. The Crisis of Boys: Jamie’s character reveals a lot about the struggles young boys face today: isolation, lack of real relationships, confusion over identity, and being glued to screens. Pornography comes up in the third episode, and it’s clear it has wrecked his ability to form healthy relationships or even see himself properly. What’s Making This Worse: -The "Incel" culture: radicalized online communities of isolated men. -A society where boys are constantly told they’re “toxic” just for being themselves. -A school system that’s not built for them (sit still, be quiet, don’t move... yeah, no). -Being over-medicated and told their natural energy is a “problem.” What Parents Can Do (According to Timmerie): -Tech Lockdown: Cut down on screen time. Seriously. Let kids be bored, climb trees, get dirty, and create stories with their imagination. -Real Interaction: Kids need real FaceTime: like playing outside, talking with adults, hanging out with friends... not just scrolling through TikTok. -Empathy and Faith: The number one thing that keeps kids away from porn is developing empathy. Guess what builds empathy? Faith and good moral values. -More Time with Parents: Kids can't just get the leftover part of your time. They need the real deal, every single day. And yes, that’s exhausting, but it matters. -Parent Watchfulness: You have to be there to notice the little things. A lot of the damage happens when kids are left alone with screens. Timmerie raves about the work of Erica Komisar: particularly her books about raising resilient children by being there for them. No shortcuts. No outsourcing. Just being present. The Faith Angle: Timmerie explains why sending your children to Catholic school and going to Mass on Sundays is just the bare minimum. It’s about living the faith daily, praying with your kids, and building a strong foundation of grace and virtue. The popularity of this Netflix show is just another warning sign. We’re addicted to the messed-up stuff because we’ve let it seep into our culture. The solution? Get your kids off screens, outside, and surrounded by loving, intentional parenting.

On The Patrick Madrid Show, Cyra from Alberta called in with a tough but crucial question: who should she and her husband pick as legal guardians for their kids in their will? Her top choice is her sister and brother-in-law: loving, family-oriented, and nearby. But there was a hitch: they’re not practicing Catholics. Her husband, Sebastian, was especially concerned that if their kids ended up in their care, the faith might slowly fade out of their lives: not because of bad intentions, but just because, well, life happens. Cyra, on the other hand, struggled with the idea of choosing someone outside the family. Patrick’s Advice? Faith Comes First! Patrick said that faith should be the number one priority when picking guardians. Sure, family closeness and emotional stability are important, but if the guardians don’t actively practice and prioritize the Catholic faith, then there’s a real risk that the kids could drift away from it over time. Even with the best of intentions, a non-Catholic couple might start strong in raising the kids Catholic, but when it comes to the daily grind: Sunday Mass, sacraments, religious education... things could start slipping. It’s not about doubting their love, but about recognizing human nature. So, What’s the Best Plan? If Catholic family members aren’t an option, Patrick suggested looking for strong Catholic friends or community members who would make raising the kids in the faith a true priority. It’s a big decision, but ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the kids grow up knowing, loving, and practicing their Catholic faith. Get Your Will in Order, For Free! Patrick gave a super useful tip: check out CatholicLegacy.com, a free service from Relevant Radio that helps Catholics create airtight wills that align with their faith. Because let’s be real: none of us like thinking about wills, but it’s way better to be prepared than to leave things to chance. If you’re picking legal guardians, don’t just think about love and familiarity... think about who will make sure your kids get to Heaven.

Relevant Radio is all about "bringing Christ to the world through the media," and that includes reaching those in prison. The Big News? Relevant Radio has teamed up with Edovo, a nonprofit that provides digital education tools in prisons, to make Catholic content accessible to over 1,100 correctional facilities across the U.S. Here’s how it works: Inmates can access Relevant Radio’s content: like Fr. Rocky’s Eucharistic Encounters and The Saints Podcast, right on secure tablets provided through Edovo. In just one month, 25,000 sessions of Relevant Radio content were accessed by inmates. Though federal prisons aren’t on board yet, there’s hope this outreach will expand even further. Why does this matter? Because everyone deserves a shot at grace, even those who’ve lost their freedom. Patrick reminds us of Matthew 25: “I was in prison, and you visited me.” Prison can be a dark, isolating place, and yet, God’s light can still break through the bars. Patrick shares a heart-touching letter from Michael, an inmate in New Jersey, who listens to Relevant Radio daily. Michael prays the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with Drew Mariani and joins in the Family Rosary Across America every evening. He even sent a handmade Christmas card to the team (with some seriously impressive cursive handwriting; Patrick was impressed!). Michael’s words say it all: “Relevant Radio has changed my life.” He and many others are finding community, hope, and a deeper relationship with Christ... right from their cells. So, next time you tune into Relevant Radio, say a prayer for those listening in the loneliest of places. Because God’s mercy knows no walls.

Welcome to the very first episode of Chosen by Jesus! For 20 years, we carried a silent struggle—one we never talked about. I never spoke about having Taylor before meeting my husband, Tony. Taylor never shared the pain of her abandonment issues (feeling like she didn't belong). I buried the past, pretending it never happened. She carried the weight of questions left unanswered. But today, we're coming clean. In this raw and real conversation, we open up about the years of silence, the hidden wounds, and the healing we found in Jesus. Our lives are far from perfect, but we've learned that God can rebuild what's been broken and restore what feels lost. On The Patrick Madrid Show, listener Amari from South Bend, Indiana calls in with a classic Catholic dating dilemma: Should she marry her boyfriend even though he’s not Catholic? She’s been with her boyfriend for over two years, and they’re talking marriage. But there’s a big issue: she wants to raise their kids Catholic, send them to Catholic school, and keep the faith at the center of their family life. Her boyfriend? Not so much. He thinks Catholic school will make the kids weird and isn’t sold on the Church at all. Patrick's Red Flags Are Flashing Patrick believes that this is a major red flag. He reminds Amari that marriage is already hard enough without adding fundamental disagreements about faith into the mix. If she marries a man who isn’t on board with her Catholic values now, what happens when Sunday morning rolls around and she’s taking the kids to Mass alone while he stays home watching the game? Patrick shares a sobering stat: When dads don’t actively practice the faith, their kids are far more likely to leave it, even if mom is super devout. What Should Amari Do? Patrick encourages Amari to think long-term: Marriage thrives in unity: finding a Catholic spouse will make faith-based family life way easier. Don’t bank on a future conversion: Yes, God can work miracles, but assuming your spouse will “come around” is risky. Read up! He recommends Steve Wood’s books: The ABCs of Choosing a Good Husband (for Amari) The ABCs of Finding a Good Wife (for her boyfriend: Valentine’s Day gift, maybe?) Final Thoughts: Love vs. Faith Patrick isn’t trying to be overly critical, but he wants her to be realistic. If her faith is deeply important to her, she needs to consider what marrying someone with different beliefs could mean for her future, her kids, and even her own spiritual life. Amari seems open to Patrick’s advice and says she’ll talk to her boyfriend and check out those books. Will she call back in six months with an update? We’ll see. But for now, Patrick leaves her with one big piece of advice: Don’t ignore the red flags.

In this third conversation with John Phillip Newell, author of The Great Search and numerous books on spirituality, we explore what we talk about when we talk about “oneness.” Oneness, as Carl Jung, Julian of Norwich, and Jalaluddin Rumi help us discover, is an archetypal way of experiencing reality. In simple, pragmatic ways, we can grow our awareness of oneness—of our interconnectedness with all things—which unlocks our spiritual experience and our experience of the divine.

On this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick explores a topic that many Catholics might not even realize they’re accidentally messing up: how we talk about Catholics and Protestants. If you’ve ever said, “Oh, I’m Catholic, and they’re Christian,” Patrick is here to gently (but firmly) ask you to stop doing that. The Big Idea: Patrick reminds us that Catholics ARE Christians: the OG Christians, to be exact. When Jesus established His Church 2,000 years ago, it wasn’t some vague, do-it-yourself Christianity. Nope, it was the Catholic Church. So, when we use language that separates "Catholic" from "Christian," we’re actually misrepresenting the truth about who we are as followers of Christ. What About Protestants? Yes, Protestants are Christians, but their Christianity is different. It stems from the Protestant Reformation, which started as a protest against the Catholic Church about 500 years ago. Patrick explains how Protestantism branched into countless denominations because of the idea of Sola Scriptura (the belief in “Bible alone”): an idea that’s not biblical or part of historic Christianity. Patrick points out the endless debates among Protestant groups: “Does baptism save you or not?” “Can you lose your salvation or nah?” It’s like a theological Rubik’s Cube with no solution. The result? Protestants follow a fragmented version of Christianity that leans heavily on individual interpretations of the Bible. Patrick notes that some churches basically just pick a “mini-Pope” (a charismatic pastor) to tell them what the Bible means. Catholicism = Historic Christianity Patrick doesn’t hold back: the Catholic Church is the original Christianity. Full stop. When you open the Bible, especially the Book of Acts, you’re seeing the Catholic Church in her beginnings. By the early second century, Saint Ignatius of Antioch was already calling it the Catholic Church. The Eucharist, Apostolic succession, the sacraments, the teachings of Christ: they all come from the Catholic Church. It’s not just a Christian church; it’s THE Church Christ established. Why Words Matter Patrick’s key takeaway is this: how we talk shapes how we think. By casually separating "Catholic" and "Christian," we’re accidentally buying into the false idea that Catholicism is just one denomination among many. I’s not. It’s the Church that Jesus Himself founded. So Stop Saying... “Oh, I’m Catholic, but they’re Christian.” Start Saying... "I’m Catholic: part of the original Christian Church." Patrick isn’t here to bash Protestants; he just wants Catholics to stop selling themselves short. The next time someone asks you about your faith, remember: being Catholic is being Christian, and it’s time we talked like it.

Patrick Madrid explains the idea of infinite regression: basically, the concept of an endless chain of causes, and how it points to the existence of God. The Train Analogy: Imagine you're sitting at a train crossing, waiting for the world's longest train to pass. Car after car zooms by. Each train car is being pulled by the one in front of it, but NONE of these cars are moving under their own power. What gives? Somewhere way up front, there HAS to be a locomotive: the unmoved mover... pulling the whole train. Without it, the entire line of train cars would be stuck. The same principle applies to the universe: you can’t have an endless line of “movers” (or causes) without something at the very beginning giving everything its first push. And that is God. Infinite regression (the idea of “it just goes back forever, no big deal”) is, as Patrick puts it, a logical impossibility. It’s like claiming the train just goes on forever without an engine. Nope. Not happening. The Paintbrush Analogy: This one’s for the art fans! Imagine a paintbrush painting a canvas. The brush creates beautiful strokes, but it’s only moving because someone: a painter... is guiding it. Now, what if the brush is part of a longer stick? Let’s say it’s a foot long… or 20 feet… or as long as a football field. What if the stick just keeps going forever without a painter? That’s absurd. The same goes for creation: if there’s no “painter” (God) behind the brush (creation), then the painting (the universe) can’t exist. God is the ultimate painter, the one who gives creation its existence and beauty. What About Infinite Regression? Patrick explains that atheists, like Richard Dawkins, often try to argue for some other explanation: like “dark matter” or even, hilariously, aliens seeding life on Earth. But here’s the problem: all of these “answers” just kick the can down the road. Where did the dark matter come from? Who created the aliens? It’s begging the question, a fancy philosophical term that means dodging the real issue by postponing it. If you keep asking “what caused THAT?” at some point, you must land on an uncaused cause: something (or someone) that exists without needing a cause. That’s God. Simple as that. The Five Ways to Prove God Exists: Patrick gives a shoutout to Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, who developed five logical ways to explain God’s existence. They’re not “scientific proof” like you’d see in a lab, but they’re rock-solid philosophical arguments. These “Five Ways” look at things like cause and effect, motion, contingency, and design in the universe: all of which point to a necessary first cause: God. He recommends Peter Kreeft’s "Handbook of Catholic Apologetics" (co-authored with Fr. Ron Tacelli) as a go-to resource. If you want to strengthen your faith, it’s must-read. Final Thoughts: Whether it’s the train, the paintbrush, or Aquinas’ Five Ways, these are tools to help us understand why belief in God isn’t just reasonable: it’s the only explanation that makes sense. So, the next time someone says, “But what caused God?” just smile and remind them: God is the engine, not another train car.
