Two brilliant authors and humans, Rumaan Alam and Tessa Hadley, go head to head in a war of the words. They talk about the joy of writing about clothes, how money can drive you mad and how some cities are easier to fictionalise than others. As well as discussing their new novels, their writing styles and processes and the difference between writing short stories, novels and novellas, they also give us some great book recommendations. Entitlement by Rumaan Alam is a novel about an ambitious young Black woman, plotting her way into the world of the one percent, and an old white billionaire, facing his own extinction. He's attracted to her intelligence, her refusal to be deferential, maybe also her Blackness, whilst she's drawn to his power and money – and his apparent willingness to share both with her. But how far is each prepared to go to get what they think they deserve? The Party by Tessa Hadley is a novella set in post-war Bristol. Sisters Moira and Evelyn are on the cusp of adulthood who meet two men at a dockside party. Paul and Sinden's air of worldliness and sophistication both intrigues and repels them. Sinden calls a few days later to invite them over to the grand suburban mansion Paul shares with his brother and sister. As the night unfolds in this unfamiliar, glamorous new setting, the sisters learn things about themselves and each other that shock them, and release them into a new phase of their lives. We hope you enjoy this episode of Book Off! Butoh Dancer | ChoreographerYou can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.__________In Episode 51 of Metralla Rosa, Carla is in London, talking to Mai Nguyen Tri, a Franco-Vietnmese experimental Butoh dancer. As a self labelled Zen Punk artist, Mai exploits her natural affiliation to water in order to give her gestural expressions a fluidity of movement that flow directly from her unconscious mind – a source deep enough to have provided her with twenty years worth of inspiration for her improvised performances. Butoh originated from 1950s post-war Japanese culture and, although Mai draws on the anti-stylised fluidity and slow, controlled movement of this relatively contemporary school of dance, she also honours the very specific social context of its birth by injecting her own experimental fantasy into her performances.Mai left Brittany over thirty years ago, drawn to London by her fascination for English poetry, literature and culture, with Hackney Wick immediately becoming the base for her creative nest. It was in this eclectic and unorthodox side of urban London, her adopted city, that her soul finally found its home, where, from the moment she decided to put down roots, the contrasting sides of her expressive identity and artistic personality began to flourish. The source of Mai's inspiration fluctuates between the rebelliousness of London's punk ethos and the minimalism of her zen heritage, and, with her background in literature and a keen interest in mental health, she has created her own, unique language that precedes her and defines her. She is curious and visionary and, as such, has collaborated with artists from various disciplines, including the reggae musician Clapper Priest, the multidisciplinary Xuân Sinden, the Afro-Irish poet Grassy Noel Macken and the ambient-noise bands Ampersand and Fear of Fluffing. However, and above all else, one of her greatest achievements, has been managing to remain uncompromisingly truthful and uncomfortably relevant in a city filled with commercial art, trendy newcomers and an insanely competitive cultural scene. And now, enjoy the interview!__________Related Links: Mai Nguyen Tri: Instagram | Facebook | YouTubeFor further information about this interview, including links to anything mentioned by Mai, or to continue reading this text in Spanish, English and Italian, visit the Metralla Rosa websiteSupport the show

Brad Park has been voted one of the 50 best hockey players of all time. The nine-time All-Star finished second of the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defensemen, a record six times, thanks to his one mistake: being born the same year as Bobby Orr, considered the best defenseman of all time. Here he talks about Team Canada coach Harry Sinden, who led the country's first “Dream Team” of NHL All-Stars against the Soviet Union in the 1972 Summit Series.Team Canada was supposed to win every game, but after winning just one game in the first five, plus a tie, Team Canada had to win all three games in Moscow. “We weren't in the kind of shape they were, they played a style of hockey we'd never seen before, and we didn't take them seriously – at first!” Park recalls. But Team Canada discovered they had certain advantages, too: led by Sinden, they were smart enough to adjust, they knew how to handle a long series – unlike the Soviets -- and they created a team spirit where none had existed before during a two-game layover in Sweden, on the way to Moscow. They also had their country behind them. More Canadians watched the last three games in Moscow than the moon landing three years earlier. As Wayne Gretzky told me, “This was more important!Under unprecedented pressure, and with Bobby Orr out with a bad knee for the entire series, Brad Park played some of the best hockey of his life, and Team Canada actually did win all three games, each by a goal, including Paul Henderson's famous game winner with 34 seconds left in the final game.“We learned humility and respect, and how to rely on each other,” Park recalls. “Hey, when it's you against the world, you gotta come together! I'll never forget it – and no one else will, either.”About our Host:For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon
