This week on the podcast, we welcome back Rob West, founder and CEO of Thunder Said Energy.  Founded in 2019, the firm provides research that helps decision-makers identify energy opportunities. Based in Estonia, nine time zones away, Rob is an exceptionally productive energy expert whose work spans a wide range of topics. We begin by walking through Rob's Top Ten Themes for Energy in 2026, including the continued steady growth in global oil demand, a waning focus on net zero, EVs, and decarbonization. With that lens, we also discuss Canada's Pathways carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. Rob then shares his bullish outlook for LNG demand growth, with positive implications for Canada's aspiration to grow LNG exports. Rob also argues that there is a growing investment case for grid-enhancing technologies to increase the utilization of existing infrastructure and meet rising electricity loads. We also touch on the outlook for copper demand driven by electrification, robotics, and AI data centers, as well as Rob's expectations for electricity load growth, which are more conservative than some other forecasts. Finally, Rob and Jackie revisit Jackie's “doomsday” scenario: what it would actually cost to back up her home during an extended power outage, comparing options such as using stored power from an electric vehicle, a home battery, and a natural gas generator. Content referenced on this podcast:Sign up for Rob's daily note at his website, https://thundersaidenergy.com/ Ten Themes for Energy in 2026 from Thunder Said Energy (January 1, 2026) Rob's video: US load growth: unpopular opinions (September 3, 2025) Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/ Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

Canada has been lockstep with the U-S when it comes to trade policy with China for years.Last week, that changed. PM Mark Carney's new tariff deal with China will allow 49,000 Chinese EVs into the country every year for three years at a dramatically-slashed tariff of only 6.1 per cent—in exchange for a reduced tariff on canola seeds, lobster, crab and other agricultural products exported to China. It's a deal that's earning praise from the prairies but disdain in Ontario.Host Cristina Howorun sits down with Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturing Association and one of the architects of CUSMA, to discuss the implications this deal could have on the EV market, the 90,000 jobs in the auto sector and tariff and trade negotiations with the States. Predicting the Unpredictable: Energy and Geopolitics in 2026 This week, Peter and Jackie kick off the year with their 2026 outlook. They begin by asking a fundamental question: How relevant are predictions in an increasingly unpredictable world? While acknowledging the limits of forecasting, they outline key themes and directional expectations for 2026—and remind leaders that, in times like these, scenario development, continuous monitoring, and course correction are far more valuable than rigid forecasts. The discussion focuses on four major areas shaping the outlook for Canadian energy, spanning oil and gas and clean energy technologies: Global geopolitics and energy markets: examining how unfolding events in Venezuela and Iran—and ongoing tensions involving the United States, China, Russia, and Ukraine—could influence global energy markets. Oil and gas fundamentals: assessing the direction of oil prices and North American natural gas in 2026. Technology and disruption: exploring whether electric vehicles will regain momentum, how rapidly solar deployment will continue to scale, and whether projections for AI-driven energy demand will keep accelerating. Canada's unique circumstances: politics, policy, and infrastructure—from climate policy and the Ottawa–Alberta memorandum of understanding (MOU) on an oil pipeline, to elections (and potential elections) to watch. While predicting the future may be difficult, one thing Jackie and Peter are confident about is that the ARC Energy Ideas podcast will be here throughout the year—helping you navigate what is shaping up to be a consequential and eventful year for energy markets and geopolitics. Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/ Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

Electric vehicles create problems for the grid. Could they also help solve them? The plan to turn EVs into reliable grid infrastructure

The Energy Gang

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2026 54:29

As we head into 2026, electricity grids aren't just under strain; they are facing transformational change because of the shifts in the ways that we work, entertain ourselves, and get around. EVs are one of the fastest-growing new loads on the grid in many parts of the world, but are also one of the least well-understood. They can exhibit flexibility that's mostly going unused today. Millions of EVs are already connected to the grid, and they're being treated as a problem instead of a solution. So how could they be used to ease that strain on electricity grids? What would it look like if we could turn EVs into really useful distributed energy resources (DERs)? Host Ed Crooks welcomes Apoorv Bhargava to the show for the first time. Apoorv is the CEO and co-founder of WeaveGrid, a company aiming to make EVs and other DERs function like dependable infrastructure for distribution grids. It wants provide utilities with trusted, repeatable, edge-level control of assets, rather than occasional, system-level demand response. Apoorv explains how it all works.Apoorv is a former student of regular guest Amy Myers Jaffe, who now teaches at New York University. She joins the show to argue that there is still a great deal of uncertainty around claims of using flexibility to reinforce. It isn't a black-and-white question, she says: flexibility only works when it's engineered, trusted and planned for at the distribution level, not improvised through emergency demand response. Together Ed, Apoorv and Amy debate how EVs and grids might be able to work together in the future, instead of against each other. They discuss consumer behaviour, politics and concerns over rising power bills as factors that will matter just as much as the evolution of the technology. The biggest grid upgrade opportunity may not be new wires, transformers or even power plants: it could be the Tesla, VW or BYD in your driveway.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The show starts off with Sami's review of the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica AWD, which boasts a peachy engine and cool seats that can hide away for more storage as needed, but Sami points out there are more than a few concerns with the American company's minivan, and it may be starting to feel a bit old these days. Then Benjamin reviews the 2026 Honda Odyssey, which he pilots through a pair of hefty snowstorms. Though it lacks the all-wheel-drive and versatile seats of the Pacifica, he has more than few reasons to recommend this mighty minivan. Finally, Benjamin regales us with a tale of a near-death experience that he almost forgot about until reminded by Sami and a Facebook memory. Thanks for listening!!

John Helveston of George Washington University discusses why a U.S. pullback from China on EVs is risky, and why engagement could strengthen America’s auto industry. --- China has rapidly become the center of global EV innovation, producing cars that are cheaper, faster to develop, and increasingly competitive in international markets. The United States, by contrast, is pulling back, eliminating incentives and pursuing policies that distance the country from China just as the global EV transition accelerates. George Washington University’s John Helveston, whose work focuses on global EV markets and China’s manufacturing system, argues that this course risks sidelining the U.S. from the technologies and supply chains shaping the automotive future. On the podcast, he explains why a more pragmatic approach that protects national security and workers while engaging with China’s central role in the EV ecosystem may be essential for America’s long-term position in the global auto industry. John Helveston is an associate professor in the department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at George Washington University. That guiding principle shapes everything about the vehicle's radical design. As Steve Fambro explained in today's episode, “Aptera is about using the least amount of energy to go from point A to point B,” emphasizing that efficiency isn't a feature of the car, it is the car.Steve, Aptera's co CEO and co founder, walked through the engineering mindset that makes their approach unique. As an electrical engineer, he thinks in terms of systems and losses, so the team engineered the vehicle from the ground up to minimize drag and weight. The result is a three wheeled, solar integrated EV that consumes just 100 watt hours per mile, less than half of what even skilled hypermiling drivers typically achieve. Steve put it simply: “The low drag, the lightweight, and the integrated solar... those are the three parts of the equation to give it that magic.”As reservation holders continue to express enthusiasm, Steve's real world perspective keeps the story grounded. The team is focused on scaling responsibly, leaning on experienced partners like Roush to engineer critical elements for mass production. Aptera's early journey wasn't linear. Steve and his co founder Chris faced misalignment with hired leadership and ultimately watched the original company collapse while they pursued other ventures. Returning with lessons learned, new battery capabilities, and a stronger market, they rebuilt Aptera on firmer foundations.Today the world is meeting them where they are. Their reservation count exceeded early expectations almost overnight. Media attention, including a recent appearance on Jay Leno's show, signaled not just curiosity but genuine enthusiasm. The story of Aptera represents more than another EV. It reflects a reframing of what efficient transportation can look like and illustrates how a focused engineering question can lead to reshaping an entire market.tl;dr:Aptera Motors is revolutionizing EVs with hyper-efficient, solar-powered vehicles designed for maximum energy efficiency. The vehicle's aerodynamic shape and lightweight materials minimize drag and energy consumption.Aptera's integrated solar panels can add up to 40 miles of range per day.Thousands of preorders signal strong demand as Aptera prepares for production next year.Steve Fambro's focus on efficiency and perseverance drives Aptera's mission for sustainable transportation. How to Develop Self-Deprivation As a SuperpowerSteve Fambro's superpower is his ability to deprive himself of comforts for as long as necessary to finish a job. Drawing from his military experience, Steve shared, “I don't let any discomfort… be a factor in my performance.” He described how he can work in extreme heat or go without sleep, food, or rest when required. This skill allows him to focus on achieving his goals without distraction, no matter the challenges.Steve recounted how this superpower helped him during Aptera's early days, as well as in his previous ventures. For example, while working in the Middle East, he endured long hours in 120-degree heat alongside a construction crew, refusing to let discomfort slow him down. His willingness to push himself, even in challenging conditions, has been key to his success.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Practice self-discipline by intentionally depriving yourself of small comforts periodically.Embrace stoic philosophy to build mental resilience and adaptability.Focus on your goals rather than temporary discomfort to stay motivated.Learn from experiences that push you outside your comfort zone, such as travel or challenging work conditions.By following Steve's example and advice, you can make self-deprivation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileSteve Fambro (he/him):co-CEO/Founder, Aptera MotorsAbout Aptera Motors: Aptera's mission is to create the most efficient transportation on the planet.
