The center of presidential politics this week was the swing state of Michigan. Trump won the longtime Democratic stronghold in 2016, and Biden won it back in 2020. It will be pivotal again in 2024. And that's why both candidates flew to metro Detroit on consecutive days this week to insert themselves into the United Auto Workers' strike against the so-called “Detroit Three” — General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, the company that owns Chrysler. On this episode of Playbook Deep Dive, host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza joins Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), the House's key player when it comes to the UAW strike, for a conversation about the strike's political consequences, why she thinks that Democrats may be in danger of losing Michigan in 2024, and why the strike's biggest sticking point is something you might not even have heard about. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Debbie Dingell is the representative for Michigan's 6th district. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Ford Motor Company paused construction on a controversial $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan that's been caught between the United Auto Workers' ongoing strike, President Joe Biden's historic visit to the picket lines, and the GOP's anti-China rhetoric. Electric vehicles are the elephants in the room as the United Auto Workers strike for better pay and benefits. In an electric future, can unionized auto industry jobs survive?
The Biden administration is looking to phase out conventional, gas-powered vehicles, with the goal of transitioning the nation toward electric vehicles. Some states, such as California, are even working to mandate that all new cars sold will soon have to be electric. We're told this is being done for the environment. But what's left out of the discussion is the significant environmental harm caused by electric vehicles. In this episode, we'll discuss the issue. ⭕️

The Biden Administration has been working hard with the Big Three automakers — Ford, GM and Stellantis — to vastly expand the production of electric vehicles, even as it gave a cold shoulder to Tesla. On this week's conversation Paul and Wally discuss the latest on MLG's gun order and where we see things going from here. On a related note Kohl's in Coronado Mall has abruptly closed. Employees interviewed by KOB TV cited theft as a leading issue. Biden's own Energy Secretary experienced some issues firsthand and NPR was there to report on them. Also, a bill was passed in the US House that would stop states from banning gas vehicles. Only a few Democrats voted for it including Gabe Vasquez. RGF has also joined the Save our Cars coalition. Poverty has risen quickly between 2021 and 2022. An energy conference organized by Democrats in downtown Albuquerque and with speakers including Sen. We chat to Doug Mcnamee from Jolt Charge, an Australian electric vehicle charging business that has raised $100million from Blackrock (the world's largest money manager). EV uptake in Australia is on a charge! When we recorded our first EV episode in 2021, they comprised less than 0.5% of total sales. In the first half of 2023 this number was up to 8%. So while EVs are just one part of decarbonising how we move, the signs are promising. We enjoyed chatting with Doug about the future of transportation, whether Australia is out of the EV doldrums and what makes Jolt Charge different. In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm jumping into a somewhat controversial topic, which is EV's and Overlanding. If you've spent any time on Overlanding forums or Facebook groups, you've probably seen all the arguing and hate for and against electrical vehicles in Overlanding. The key argument advanced by the proponents of electric vehicles is that they greatly reduce CO2 emissions. However, this doesn't seem substantiated, and this has major public policy implications. When you read the writings of organizations promoting a bold, rapid transition towards electric vehicles, the core argument is the reduction in CO2 emissions, as a way to combat global warming. While the most intellectually dishonest writings simply and falsely claim that electric vehicles are zero emission vehicles, others will acknowledge that some emissions are associated with EVs, yet they will argue that EVs will generate important CO2 emission savings. For example, the influential C40 global network, which encompasses nearly 100 mayors of major cities in the world, and is presided by London mayor Sadiq Khan, claims that:“Each electric vehicle that displaces a conventional car saves approximately 1.5 tons of CO2 per year which represents a 62% reduction compared to a petrol-powered car and a 53% reduction compared to a diesel-powered car.”In this podcast episode, we will see that this claim does not hold water. We will see that, for the foreseeable future, the only realistic solution, if one is serious about it, is to redirect our efforts out of electric vehicles and towards highly efficient internal combustion engine vehicles.See article and other related EV articles at: https://covexit.substack.com/

At the core of the belief that EVs inevitably displace conventional cars is the claim that EVs are, inherently, just simpler machines. That means, we're told, fewer jobs—hence the ostensible reason for the UAW's anxiety. But the simplicity claim is a canard. EVs entail a complexity swap, not a simplification.
