During the recent craft brewers conference All About Beer set up at Human Robot for a suite of podcasts. I was happy to get together with Brandon Jones, the long-time brewer and creator of Embrace the Funk. It's a conversation that goes into the evolution of extreme beers to nuanced, complex brews. As Jones has begun to note the shift of consumer preferences, he sees a move away from hazy IPAs towards more unique, experience-driven beers. He advocates for brewers to ask questions and learn from each other. As the industry involves, he shares insight into the brewery's cider program, which is inspired by European natural ciders.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:John I. 2023 was a sea-change year for several craft breweries who underwent leadership changes. Lawson's Finest Liquids and Rhinegeist Brewery were among the companies who underwent CEO transitions that year. Lawson's CEO Adeline Druart and Rhinegeist CEO Adam Bankovich discuss entering Year 3 of their respective tenures at the top of those companies in separate featured interviews on the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast. In the first conversation, Druart dives into the "ongoing conversation" at the Vermont brewery of "what makes a Lawson's Finest beer a Lawson's Finest beer" and defines what makes a Sunshine brand. "Really for us, it's IPAs – clear IPAs using Citra hops, and with a very bold flavor profile," she said. "The more conversations we have like those – defining who we are, the more I'd say clear we are moving forward what's on brand, what's off brand." Druart also discusses the impact of Lawson's community giving programs, accelerating business by moving distribution to Baker Distributing in its home state, the launch of Hop Wired hazy and juicy IPA and much more. Then, Bankovich explores the anniversary of launching the Cincinnati craft brewery's first NA beer line Ghost, with new offerings to follow. He also explains why launching Fuzzy Bones, a sparkling THC drink, has been a challenging and educational "crash course," following Ohio's ban on intoxicating hemp beverages. Fuzzy Bones launched in six states, with three additional states expected to follow. Rhinegeist is "trying to stay nimble with it," as a federal ban looms in November. "I wish that our government officials could learn enough from the past to act quickly because this industry developed so quickly, seemingly out of nowhere," he said. "We just really need a chance to not fall into the trap of Prohibition and instead write proper regulation now and in real time as consumers want these products instead of prohibiting them for years and years and years." Bankovich also dishes on Rhinegeist's daily hospitality efforts to make guest experiences' special, the growth of the company's core Truth and Cincy Light brand families and several expedited new additions: Half Truth session IPA, limited-time summer offering Cincy Light Watermelon and Sea Salt and Cincy Vodka Soda, the company's first spirit-based offering. Before the interviews, the Brewbound team reviews that latest news, including: A recent Bump Williams Consulting report on long-tail craft brands finding success; Leadership changes at the American Cider Association; And Boston Beer's 15% ABV Lytt beyond beer creation in glow-in-the-dark, lightbulb-shaped 6.8 oz. containers.
The IPA gang is back together with some special guests for this star-studded episode recorded in front of a live audience of brewers at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River, Kelsey McNair of North Park, and Evan Price of Green Cheek are joined by Ben Edmunds of Breakside and Oregon State University's Tom Shellhammer—this year's recipient of the Brewers Association Recognition Award—for a ranging conversation. Among the topics they cover: managing sulfur in hop-forward beer, evolving dry-hopping techniques, thiols and mercaptans, and reducing the dry-hop load for better beer—plus, they take questions from the audience. This episode even features a first for the podcast—a Pick 6 speed round, in which Vinnie Cilurzo asks Tom Shellhammer to share six beers that inspired him. I've been trying to nail Brendan from Coronado Brewing down since the launch of their latest edition to the Weekend Seriese. This week he finally drops by the show to talk about Hazy Weekend, but before we get there we need to set a baseline for where the Weekend Seriese started, Weekend Vibes Hazy IPA. A San Diego style IPA packed with Mosaic, Citra and Simcoe held up by a light bodied beer makes this 6.8% AVB an easy all weekend crushing choice.

Episode 26 of Matt Likes Beer features Electric Mainline, a West Coast IPA from Grimm Artisan Ales, a Brooklyn-based brewery Matt knows primarily through retail purchases rather than firsthand taproom experience. With limited personal history to draw from, the episode leans heavily into technical judging, exploration, and education, making it one of the most analytically driven installments of the season. Matt opens by exploring Grimm's extensive and stylistically diverse beer catalog, noting the brewery's wide-ranging output across IPAs, lagers, stouts, sours, and mixed fermentation beers. While researching Grimm live during the recording, Matt discusses the brewery's dual-level taproom layout, contrasting its polished upstairs space with a more industrial downstairs brewery setting—an aesthetic that strongly appeals to his personal tastes. Before judging begins, Matt reads the brewery's own description of Electric Mainline, which declares the beer a West Coast IPA featuring Luminosa hops, supported by Mosaic, Citra, Columbus, and Simcoe. With the style clearly defined, Matt evaluates the beer strictly as BJCP Category 21A: American IPA. Appearance is a standout, with the beer pouring a brilliant, unmistakable yellow, a large, persistent white head, and excellent lacing. While visually striking, Matt notes an interesting guideline quirk: BJCP color descriptors list medium gold to light amber, making pure yellow technically outside the expected range—an example of how modern IPAs sometimes outpace written standards. Aroma earns a full 12/12 score, delivering expressive notes of orange zest, mandarin citrus, lemon brightness, subtle pine, and a faint grainy malt backbone. Matt explicitly follows advice from a fellow judge—“don't fear the 50”—choosing not to deduct points where the beer fully delivers stylistically. Flavor presents a more mixed picture. While citrus character remains vibrant and layered, bitterness is strongest on the tongue rather than in the finish or aftertaste, falling short of the firm, lingering bitterness expected in a classic West Coast IPA. Malt presence is detectable but subdued, leading Matt to score flavor at 14/20. Mouthfeel is spot-on, with a medium body, high carbonation, and smooth texture earning a perfect score. Overall impression balances enjoyment with technical critique, resulting in a final score of 39 out of 50, placing Electric Mainline solidly in the “Excellent” range—even with noted flavor shortcomings. With no one-star reviews available, the episode transitions into a long-form educational soapbox prompted by a conversation with a non-judge friend: Why do Double and Triple IPAs often taste sweeter than regular IPAs? Matt breaks down the concept using brewing fundamentals, explaining fermentable versus non-fermentable sugars, increased body, alcohol's impact on sweetness perception, and why higher-ABV IPAs inevitably drift away from the crisp bitterness drinkers expect. The episode concludes with a preview of upcoming IPA-focused discussions and reinforces one of the show's core missions: helping everyday beer drinkers understand why beer tastes the way it does, not just whether it's “good” or “bad.”
Adam Bosch from Parliament Brewing is back on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras today to talk about the Cheesesteak Competition on March 21. Adam has been on the show several times, the most recent was this episode last September. Chris Amadio from Mamadios food truck, is in the studio. They were the people's choice winner at last year's Cheesesteak competition. First, they are drinking Capital Letters, a new West Coast IPA that they started brewing last year. The hops are Riwaka, Citra and Nelson. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date Pliny the Younger 2026 information. This is their third year of the Parliament Brewing Cheesesteak competition. Apart from the five cheesesteak vendors, they will have four bands and a dj, plenty of seats, tables and chairs, tents and parking. The cheesesteak vendors will be Mamadio's, Lila's Streetside Eats, The Spot Food Truck, Golden Steak Warriors and Canevari's Deli. There will also be so far about 13 merch vendors, and food and beverage vendors. Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, Flyers. Herlinda recalls visiting Philadelphia and finding cheesesteaks. The old city has cobblestone streets and lots of corner shops like delis and restaurants. There is also a burgeoning brewery scene. For the first interview pod with Nate back in the co-host chair, we had to time it so it was with one of our favourite breweries in the province of Quebec. Guillaume Savard of Le Ketch joined Cee and Nate to catch up on what's been happening the last couple of years, their taproom and patio improvements, how Eggers Hops changes the names of their hop varieties and Guillaume's love of NZ hops, the different styles that they're expanding into (including some nano beers), why they use local honey in basically all of their beers, their insane volume of collabs, why Guillaume travels so much to grow the brand, his experience in Europe and the response to his brews, and their festivals in the US. We got into four killer Le Ketch brews: Easy New Zealand Lager, Dock 139 NEIPA with Freestyle Nectaron, Oscar Dry Stout, and Dock 137 Triple IPA with Citra, Eggers Lily (Riwaka) and Nelson Sauvin. This was a gem - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Natalie and Pliny Natalie and Vinny Cilurzo join Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell on Brew Ha Ha with the first taste of Pliny the Younger 2026 from Russian River Brewing Co. Today is a very special edition of Brew Ha Ha because Vinny Cilurzo is also here along with Natalie Cilurzo. They have brought the first taste of the Pliny the Younger 2026 in a keg. Today they celebrate the distribution of Pliny the Younger on draft at all of the bars and restaurants in their distribution network. It will all leave the brewery by Friday. It is a huge effort for the staff but it is like a holiday event. The retail release at the two RRBC locations runs from March 20 to April 2, 2026. Tapenings have begun! Pliny the Younger 2026 “tapenings” are happening and will go on the rest of the month in about 130 locations. The other release of Pliny the Younger to the general public will be in March. Right now, the trucks are on the road for Maine, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, as well as northern and southern California. Vinny also mentions ten or so brewers who are working hard in both breweries. Their sales reps in southern California have worked hard to prepare for Pliny the Younger 2026 to be a big event. A month ago, every tank in both breweries was full. The month of February would normally be the slowest time of the year for a brewery. Their original idea was to create a promotional brew to goose sales for the slow time. At first they never dreamed that it would become such a success. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date Pliny the Younger 2026 information. Vinny tells the story of Pliny the Younger Vinny describes Russian River Brewing Co.'s history since he took over the brand from Korbel, the original founder. It used to be that barley wine was the winter brew. Vinny decided to see how far they could push the hops. For the first five years of Pliny the Younger, “It wasn't a huge deal.” But in 2010 everything changed. Vinny would always show up on the first Friday in February to tap the first keg. That time, there were people waiting outside. That is when Vinny learned that this beer was rated the number one and two beer in the world on two popular beer rating websites. He did not know about any of that. By the time they opened, they had to call every employee they could get, and limited people to 4 growlers per person. A table of 4 would buy 16 growlers. They were overwhelmed by its popularity that day. The websites were taking votes from beer enthusiasts. They ended up having to make up rules to govern and limit the traffic. During covid they had to split the distribution between bars and restaurants first and then the retail distribution later. They were forced to wait about 2 months and ended up March into April. They do that every year because it turned out to be an easier way to manage the whole season. Herlinda remembers how they organized a vaccine clinic at the brewery. The Magnificent Seven Hops The recipe has changed a little bit from year to year, but for the last few years it has used the same selection of hops. This is the first year they have used the exact same seven hops. They are Simcoe, Amarillo, Citra, Tangier, Mosaic, Nectaron and Warrior. There are five different hop formats. There are whole cone hops (as they grow) and there are pellets, which resemble rabbit food. Then there are other advanced products that are concentrated flavor extracts. Some of the processes that hop companies are using for extracts are the same as used to make cannabis extracts. As for the malt, it is about 60% silo malt, 30% Pilsner malt and about 10% sugar. They use sugar because it ferments right into alcohol and doesn’t leave any body at all. Pliny the Younger 2026 is 10.5% alcohol but it doesn’t taste so strong. The Sonoma County Economic Development Board has studied the economic impact of Pliny the Younger. In 2024, the last year studied, they found 8.3 million dollar impact on the community. This comes from business to hotels and other hospitality businesses and more. Natalie and Vinny are very proud of this.
Episode 20 of Matt Likes Beer finds Matt deep into Dry January 2026, reflecting on health goals, pre-recorded episodes, and the realities of balancing beer enthusiasm with personal wellness. The beer in the spotlight is Dollar Slice, a hazy IPA from Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York—chosen initially for its pizza-inspired label and unexpected name. Matt shares his prior experience with Other Half, noting that while he's enjoyed their IPAs before, this particular beer was a classic case of label buying—a marketing reality many craft beer fans know well. A deeper look into the brewery's catalog reveals a diverse lineup beyond IPAs, including lagers, sours, and spontaneous fermentation beers, even though hop-forward styles clearly dominate their production. During the tasting, Matt addresses an important judging dilemma: while the can simply says “India Pale Ale,” further research—and the beer's unmistakable appearance—confirm it should be evaluated as a 21C Hazy IPA. Using BJCP guidelines, he breaks down the beer's opaque yellow appearance, exceptional head retention, intense citrus and tropical fruit aroma, and luxuriously soft, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor-wise, Dollar Slice delivers vibrant orange zest, pineapple, and juice-forward hop character from Citra and Galaxy hops, earning high marks across the board. A slight lingering off-flavor prevents a near-perfect score, but the beer still lands at an impressive 41 out of 50, firmly in the Excellent range. Matt emphasizes that without this minor issue—possibly isolated to the can or palate—this could easily have been a mid-40s standout. With no one-star reviews to read, the episode closes on a thoughtful soapbox moment about Untappd, consumer-driven beer trends, and the disconnect that can occur when breweries resist making the styles people actually want to drink. Matt balances critique with humility, acknowledging the complexity of running a brewery while reaffirming his belief that variety, responsiveness, and drinker feedback matter.

When I wrote my 2021 book, Modern British Beer, I made the very intentional decision to put Fyne Ales irreplaceable Blonde Ale, Jarl, right at the beginning. For me, it's a beer that merges two schools of thought: that it is a modern beer, hopped with Citra imported from the Pacific Northwest, showcasing a bold, citrus fruit character, but one that is also a 3.8% cask beer, and at the same time feels resolutely anchored to British brewing tradition. Jarl, though, is not simply a modern British beer—it is a modern Scottish beer. Honestly, there is perhaps no beer experience that is resolutely more Scottish than to enjoy a pint at its source in Glen Fyne. That was the inspiration for this particular discussion—an effort to take a closer look at what's happening in the contemporary world of Scottish brewing. FyneFest, conveniently, provided the perfect place to chew on this topic and indeed it features Fyne Ales' very own head brewer Sam Shrimpton. Also on the panel are two owners/brewers at two of Scotland's youngest breweries: Lucy Stevens of Closet Brewing in Edinburgh, and Harry Weskin of Dookit Brewing in Glasgow.Listening to this episode, you'll quickly realise that no one on the panel claims immediate Scottish heritage (although Harry is pretty damn close.) However, they are, each in their own way, vital to the local, independent beer community. It's great to find out that the spirit that bound businesses together during the last resurgence of small breweries still exists today—in fact I'd argue it probably wouldn't exist without it.Tune in to hear two of the best young Scottish breweries talk about what they do, while perhaps one of the finest contemporary breweries to exist north of the border provides balance and context to this conversation. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Get ‘Er Brewed. Anderson Valley Brewing Company taproom. Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell host another edition of Brew Ha Ha, featuring guests from Anderson Valley Brewing Company. They are the official beer sponsor of the Great Dickens Fair, a Christmas celebration happening at the Cow Palace now through Dec. 21. (During this show, we also got a phone call from Kevin Patterson, manager of the Great Dickens Fair. His portion of this show can be heard over here, on this other podcast episode. This way both guests have their own podcast episode, for their own linking and listener traffic.) Jason O’Connell and Ben Padrone are here from Anderson Valley Brewing Company. Jason is the new owner and Ben is the Lab Manager. They begin by tasting their Salted Caramel Porter, which gets its flavors from the malts that are used, not from any actual caramelized sugars. It is aged for 6 months in bourbon barrels and comes in at 9.5% ABV. QA and QC Jason’s background is in the wine industry and he finds the beer world to be more fun. He says he bought the brewery because he was bored. Ben’s job is QA and QC, quality assurance and quality control. They do a lot of testing on the water and the product. They get their water from wells that are on their property. Anyone visiting Anderson Valley may want to visit their 18-hole championship Disc Golf course. Next year’s Booneville Beer Fest is on May 2 next year. The theme is Godzilla vs. Barkley and there is a Japanese sake connection. Stay tuned for more information before the date. They have already about a dozen breweries signed on. Among beer producers this is one of the favorite events. Fal Allen is Back at Anderson Valley BC Fal Allen is back. Fal Allen is back on the scene at Anderson Valley Brewing Company. He has been the brewer there and a key person in the company. He left the company for a while and was working in New Zealand. Now he is working with AVBC for the moment from Hawaii. Fal Allen has a great radio voice and has been on Brew Ha Ha before. Here is his last appearance on Brew Ha Ha. Next they taste their West Coast IPA, which uses Mosaic, Citra and Ekuanot hops. All seven of the beers they brought today are available at the Great Dickens Fair. SAKE They have a plan to start making sake and to use the best possible rice. Sake is gluten free, which is an advantage for some people. They are experimenting with Sato, a kind of rice for sake. They are also making a sake flavored beer. Herlinda remembers when her friends asked her to taste a large selection of sake to help them get an import company started. Watch out for this to develop over the next five years. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. We have a couple of heavy hitters today. Fidens and Brujos are two of the top hazy beer creators in the US. If you get lucky enough to try their beers, don't pass up on the chance. We certainly didn't. Fidens Jasper with Peach is their classic Jasper NEIPA make with citra hops, but they added peaches. It's a fun mix of peaches and IPA. Brujos TDH San Nosferatu is a triple dry-hopped NEIPA. They went crazy with the hops on this one. Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Maui Nelson, Nelson Hyperboost and Citra Cryo all went into this beer. It sounds like it would be a hoppy mess but it works. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #fidens #brujos #neipa #dipa
“I have not, but there's another genre we have to escape at some point, right?”, he responds after a laugh, referring to the band's past efforts to distance themselves from the nu metal movement."-From the interview "We told Deftones singer Chino Moreno what ‘baddiecore' is and this was his response" by Matt Mills ( Metal Hammer, Louder ) last updated 25 August 2025This episode is all Deftones. It features Markisan, Ben and the triumphant return of Jeff!! We begin by hopping into the time machine and discussing "Adrenaline." Deftones debut album that turns 30 this year! Markisan than leads the discussion with some history about the album and music in the early 90s. We share our reactions when we first heard the album and what we think about "Adrenaline" when we spin it today. This leads to a discussion of the nu metal tag in the 90s and how Deftones broke away from it. We then shift to the stunning new Deftones album “private music“! We reflect on the Deftones musical development and how has their sound grown from Adrenaline to private music and where it ranks in their fantastic catalog? We also consider Deftones surging popularity recently today! Other questions that animate this fun and free flowing discussion also include: From blowing up on tiktok to playing arenas, how did this resurgence happened and what does it say about the band's generational draw? How do we think Deftones has impacted/influenced music and bands over the years? Is the Deftones discography our favorite of all time? Next we open the discussion up to metal adjacent bands we love more broadly--how the Deftones straddle the line between genres and what are some of our other favorite Alt Metal or Metal Adjacent albums released in the last few years. If you dig the Deftones, sit back and crack open a Deftones Phantom Bride IPA from Belching Beaver Brewing: "Named after the ethereal song by the one and only Deftones, Phantom Bride IPA is a blend of Amarillo, Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops delicately balanced for the perfectly drinkable mix of citrus and hoppy goodness. A truly original Deftones/ Belching Beaver collaboration envisioned by Chino Moreno and skillfully crafted by Thomas Peters. Sit back, put on your headphones and drink away. (ABV: 7.1%))."

Learn how Solemn Oath's founder opened a brewery without brewing, transformed a hometown IPA into a cult classic, and built Hidden Hand's wild beer lab.Solemn Oath Brewery Founder and CEO John Barley shares how an untrained beer lover built one of Chicagoland's most creative and community-driven breweries. From his time in Belgium and Wisconsin to opening Naperville's first brewery in over a century, John's story is one of bold leaps and boundary-pushing flavor. He explains why Solemn Oath's Still Life taproom in Logan Square channels Belgian beer-hall energy with Midwestern hospitality, and how a surprising Coors connection helped him find his first brewer. John also discusses the rise of brewery euchre tournaments, how he launched a brewery without ever brewing a beer, and why he believes branding and camaraderie matter as much as hops. After the beer break, John dives into Solemn Oath's flagship Snaggletooth Bandana West Coast IPA, tracing its evolution from its early sea-hop bitterness to today's smoother, citrus-forward profile — and the cult following that's inspired fans to tattoo the Snaggletooth tooth on their skin. He also shares the origin of Hidden Hand, Solemn Oath's experimental offshoot exploring foeder-aged lagers, barrel-aged saisons, and approachable beers like The 77 light lager. Hear about the Oaked Val d'Or that won Best in Show at FOBAB, and what makes foeder aging uniquely expressive of Chicago's barrel-aged beer heritage.Plus: how Solemn Oath navigated Naperville's original three-drink limit, whether a third location might be next, and how a Robert Burns poem inspired the brewery's name while Napoleon's “hidden hand” lent mystery to its sister brand.About Solemn Oath Brewery: Solemn Oath Brewery is a Chicago-area brewery known for its Belgian-inspired and barrel-aged beers, offering a diverse lineup that blends American ingenuity with traditional Belgian styles. Founded by John Barley and Tim Marshall, the brewery has two primary locations in Naperville and Chicago, providing taprooms for visitors to sample their craft beers. Björn and Stefan were in Copenhagen the other day and discovered a new brewery. Brewsketeers is a new contract brewer in Copenhagen. They have a bottle shop called The Beer Hive in Amager. They fortunate enough to visit The Beer Hive before running into one of the onwers at Peders. West Coast Warrior is a collab with another Danish brewery, Ghost Brewing. This 6.5% ABV American style IPA is made with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. Next up is Fluffy, a collab with Thyras Bryg. This 5.2% hazy IPA is made with Citra, Mosiac and Nectaron hops. Send us a textThe Bums are back in the rail yard with S5:E0135 — and the top begins with the Bums giving thanks and praise for the return of regular season NFL football; a spitting contest ensues with Jalen Carter's ejection, leaving the Eagle's D short-handed vs. Dem Boys; the Bums face a strange quandary, watching JF1 in Jets garb and serial douchebag A-A-Ron “Horseface” Rodgers donning Pittsburgh black and gold — a dilemma ensues; take turns to Junior Varsity football (aka College Football), as the Longhorns get their nuts snipped by the Ohio cannabis leaves, the Golden Dumbers fall short, and SMU is nailed to the cross in the Jesus Bowl; talk turns to late season MLB — as the Cubbies induct Sammy Sosa and Derek Lee into their team HoF (Eddie doesn't care); the MLB playoff and wildcard race starts to take shape despite in the shadow of the Dodger's vs. Orioles near-no-hit; Angel Angst runs rampant amongst WNBA players and fans (along with neon colored dildos); and close with foul ball etiquette not being followed, and the memes aren't disappointing. The bottom half cracks off with another infamous beer review with a French Canadian brew from Quebec's micro brasserie Dieu Du Ciel and their “Fenetre Sur Les Tropique” (ABV 5.0%), a hazy blonde pale ale that is rich in Citra, Mosaic and Motueka hops — an easy drinker that isn't too sweet (everyone rejoices); Paddy and Rocky visit the Salt Shed on a school night to see the Red Clay Strays, following a delicious pregame dinner at Ada; meanwhile, Eddie and Company enjoy a set delivered by the Henry True Band at the G Man, with a few familiar faces; Genny Tacos “tries” to order a drink at G Man (and Eddie isn't having it); the praise for Blue Ash Farm bourbon continues; another Eddie chow report features Chicago's Bodega Sur; binge streaming updates with Dept Q, Smoke and Stick, and close with a Rocky-flavored grill review — highlighting Spider Grill's Huntsman—a hybrid kettle/kamado masterpiece.
