Welcome to Out of the Shadows, a series that dives into the world of (mostly) 80s horror movies. Join Chris Chavez and Jim Clark as they explore the best and worst of what made the 80s the golden age of horror. This week, Chris and Jim finish their Barbara Crampton-a-thon with the 2023 erotic horror film co-starring Heather Graham, Suitable Flesh.
As we hit episode three of the series, Rob and Guy tackle their most recent film to date, 2024's Swede Caroline. Starring mainstay of British film and television Jo Hartley, and supported by a talented array of comedians, thesps, and character actors. The film looks at the world of competitive giant vegetable-growing and what happens when proceedings are rocked by scandal. We also take a look at forgotten sitcom Bliss starring Stephen Mangan, Hartley, and Heather Graham. The show was created by American comedian David Cross and followed the trials and tribulations of a man trying to balance life with two families in the same city. Not adverse to controversial comedies, will Bliss leave us wanting more or wishing we'd not bothered in the first place? You'll have to give the episode a listen to find out! Today, we're heading straight into the dust, danger, and drama of the wild west with a very special guest—director and writer Brian Skiba—who joins us to talk about his latest film, GUNSLINGERS.Starring Stephen Dorff, Heather Graham, and Academy Award Winner Nicolas Cage, GUNSLINGERS is a gritty, high-octane Western thriller where justice rides on a hair trigger. When America's most wanted outlaw lands in a quiet Kentucky town, chaos erupts—brothers clash, bullets fly, and vengeance rides hard and fast.In this conversation, Brian gives us an inside look at crafting the story, assembling an all-star cast, and what it takes to bring an explosive modern Western to life.
When the most wanted man in America surfaces in a small Kentucky town, his violent history ― and a bloodthirsty mob seeking vengeance and a king's ransom ― soon follow. As brothers face off against one another and bullets tear the town to shreds, this lightning-fast gunslinger makes his enemies pay the ultimate price for their greed. Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage, Stephen Dorff, and Heather Graham star in this action-packed Western-thriller about true justice in the Wild West. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT - BRIAN SKIBA The Western genre has always carried a timeless allure—tales of justice, revenge, and survival in the face of lawlessness. With Gunslingers, I wanted to create a film that not only honors the great Westerns that came before but also brings something fresh and bold to the table. This film is about outlaws, redemption, and the harsh reality of a world where the line between good and evil is razor-thin. Bringing Gunslingers to life has been a journey of passion and perseverance, a two-year odyssey filled with challenges and triumphs. At its core, this is a story about a wanted man who stumbles upon a hidden town—a sanctuary for criminals—only to realize that salvation comes at a cost. When a relentless posse arrives to collect on the town's entire population, the stage is set for an explosive battle where survival is the only currency that matters. With an extraordinary cast led by Stephen Dorff, Heather Graham, and Nicolas Cage, we've crafted a world that feels gritty, raw, and authentically Western. Their performances bring depth and intensity to the story, breathing life into characters who exist in a world where justice is often a matter of who draws first. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of Grindstone executive Barry Brooker and my producing partner/star, Laurie Love, whose dedication helped shape this film into what it is today. Gunslingers is more than just a Western—it's a film about the choices we make when the odds are against us. It's a tribute to the spirit of those who refuse to back down, who fight for their survival, no matter the cost. For fans of the genre, this is a must-watch, and I can't wait for audiences to experience the world we've built. Stay connected with me here.

Episode 47 - Classic Recommendation: Swingers (1996)Can we tell you something? “You are so money and you don't even know it!”Let us take you back to 1996, when Jon Favreau (Chef, The Mandalorian, Iron Man), Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Lost World), and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) arrived on the film scene with this gem of a movie. This one has something for everyone to love — from Vince Vaughn's magnetic energy to Jon Favreau's pitch-perfect comedy as he navigates the real sadness of getting over a breakup. We meet a group of friends (who could easily be you and your own buddies) just trying to make it in Los Angeles. This classic flick delivers the perfect mix of laughs and sincerity — and it's way ahead of its time in how self-aware it is.Swingers helped catapult its creators into the spotlight and brought new attention to indie filmmaking. Favreau wrote the sharp and heartfelt script (his screenwriting debut!). There's even a moment when the filmmakers ask Steven Spielberg for permission to use the Jaws theme — not only did he say yes, he loved the movie so much he cast Vaughn in The Lost World. With a runtime of just over 90 minutes, this movie keeps a smile on your face the whole way through. It's also technically impressive — shot in just 18 days! Look out for excellent supporting turns from rising stars Heather Graham and Ron Livingston (who delivers several truly memorable and relatable scenes). Swingers was both a critical and commercial success, pulling in $4.6 million at the global box office on a $250,000 budget. It's a reminder of a time when indie films had a strong allure. We debate whether that time has passed for good, or if word-of-mouth can still help indie films and fresh talent break through. There's no doubt you'll be laughing, reminiscing about time with your own friends, and just enjoying the ride of this goofy, heartfelt indie. Swingers is currently streaming on Paramount+ and Hoopla, and is also available to rent or buy on all major platforms.Enjoy the movie, hit up the comments with your thoughts, and as always, thanks for listening! Frank Oz brought that "Show must go on!" Muppety energy to Steve Martin's script about washed up filmmaker Bobby Bowfinger, who cons his way into making a movie with action superstar Kit Ramsey, played by Eddie Murphy. Our September OVER 90 episode comes a little late in the form of 1999's "Bowfinger" directed by Frank Oz and starring Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Heather Graham, Christine Baranski, Robert Downey Jr., Terrance Stamp, and a respectfully restrained Jamie Kennedy. The con is on!

We're coming full circle as actress and filmmaker, Heather Graham joins J&J for an extra special Sunday episode. 2 years ago in a Benefits episode, Jordana shared the story of how Heather Graham's list for manifesting the perfect partner led her and several friends to meet their husbands in a matter of months, and Jared made a list of his own too. Fast-forward to present day where a listener wrote in to announce she's getting married and those episodes helped her find her man too, so it was finally time Heather Graham knew her impact on the U Up? World. After J&J bring her up to speed on her unknown history with the pod, she shares her affirmations, how her friend group wills what they want into their lives and the ways she's learned to make better choices than what may feel familiar to someone with a dysfunctional past. The episode ends with a lightning round of “Firsts & Worsts.” For more from Heather Graham (@heathergraham), see her sophomore directorial project, “Chosen Family” on October 11, 2024. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy x2 star in this satirical comedy from 1999, which is a firm favourite of both Hannah and Mick. Pressure. Which Eddie Murphy will steal the show? Will Heather Graham out Heather Graham herself? Will Hannah be able to stop watching the same three minutes of the film to watch all the film? Why is Mick practicing her kung-fu moves? Can Hannah get down from that mid-height platform? And, vitally, has Mick pushed her luck by picking Bowfinger for Rated or Dated? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
