When two Daves walk into a podcast, you don't expect to stumble upon a meditation on art, failure, persistence, and horror-comedy. But that's exactly what happened in this electric and delightfully unfiltered conversation with Dave Campfield, a filmmaker, actor, and host of the Troma Now Podcast, best known for his work in the cult Caesar and Otto comedy-horror film series.Dave Campfield is a fiercely independent filmmaker whose journey from a now-defunct film college in New Mexico to directing his own cult horror satires has been a long and winding road paved with hustle, humor, and horror. We start in the sand-colored surrealism of Santa Fe, where adobe buildings and the ghost of City Slickers set the stage for Dave's early filmmaking dreams. In the land of tumbleweeds and tumble-down gym studios turned sound stages, Dave cut his teeth not just on film but on the art of adaptation. The college no longer exists, but the memories—like chalk lines under studio lights—remain vivid in his story. “It was like going to school on Tatooine,” he says, laughing, but behind that joke is a bittersweet nod to the ephemeral. From there, Dave walks us through the illusion of success—early meetings with Universal and New Line Cinema where hopes were dangled like carrots in front of eager young dreamers. The industry, he quickly learned, speaks its own coded language: familiarity, marketability, and sometimes, plain deception. One mentor told him to “say you're young, from the streets, and have a dark comedy,” regardless of truth. Dave gave it a shot but came away with the haunting realization that "they were intrigued enough to keep me on leash, but not enough to make it happen."That experience seeded his first real film, “Dark Chamber,” a mystery-horror project which deliberately bucked slasher formulas. It took five years to make—five years of blood, sweat, and overdrafts. And yet, when the studios responded with, “We wanted something more familiar,” Dave knew he was swimming upstream. Still, he sold the film to a small distributor, endured its repackaging as something it wasn't, and got it onto Netflix. A win—just not the one he envisioned. But here's the heart of it all: Dave didn't stop. He pivoted, not with bitterness, but with evolution. “I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people waiting for opportunity. You had to make it happen on your own.” And so, he leaned into comedy horror—a genre he describes as “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, but for the splatter generation.” Thus, Caesar and Otto were born: two absurdly lovable doofuses bumbling their way through massacres, monsters, and paranormal mayhem. One of Dave's secret weapons is loyalty to what's real. Whether recounting how Lloyd Kaufman forgot him (then remembered) or editing commercials for the Philadelphia Pet Expo, he keeps a kind of grounded magic about his craft. He shares a deeply personal new project, “Awaken the Reaper,” born from a decade of introspection and struggle, calling it “the most personal thing I've ever written.” He says, “It's about being stuck—feeling like every day you're not moving forward—and finally getting out of your own way.”All along, Dave's been quietly building a reputation for casting future stars before they break—Trey Byers (Empire), Peter Scanavino (Law & Order)—and hosting a podcast that thrives not just because of brand synergy with Troma, but because he genuinely knows how to talk to people. “They've never rejected an episode,” he remarks. “I tease Troma a lot, and they're always game. It's a beautiful collaboration.”The conversation wraps not with grandiosity, but a recognition that even the smallest cult followings can keep a creator going. “My fanbase is small, but intense,” Dave says with pride. “I can rattle them off on two hands.” Maybe that's enough. Maybe that's everything.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

However, when Hermione discovers Draco's blood can soothe her scar, a dangerous proposition arises where Draco is willing to trade his blood for her body amidst a backdrop of post-war blood purity politics, illicit potion dealings, Pansy Parkinson's career guidance, Malfoy family manipulations, Neville Longbottom's Death Eater hunts, a slutty Theo Nott serving as Draco's right-hand man, and Crookshanks loose in Malfoy Manor.* The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas (Reb)Desperate to maintain her fabricated story of an American boyfriend for her sister's upcoming wedding in Spain, Catalina Martín faces the daunting task of finding someone willing to travel across the Atlantic and deceive her entire family, including her ex and his fiancée, within a mere four weeks. What's up, sleepy heads? This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Jon Yoe as we dive into the nightmares of Springwood to compare A Nightmare on Elm Street from 1984 and its 2010 reimagining. In this episode, we explore how Wes Craven's original reshaped the slasher genre by blending supernatural terror with psychological depth, and introduced one of horror's most unforgettable villains—Freddy Krueger. We break down the surreal, dream-fueled horror of the original, Freddy's evolution into a charismatic icon, and how themes like teenage trauma, distrust in authority, and fear of sleep made it a genre-defining film. Then we shift to the 2010 remake, which aimed to bring a grittier, more grounded version of Freddy to modern audiences. We unpack its emphasis on repressed trauma, psychological realism, and the stark shift in Freddy's portrayal—from theatrical killer to cold predator. We also compare the similarities and key differences between the two films, before closing out with a look at the cultural legacy of Elm Street, Freddy's influence on horror history, and why the remake didn't quite strike the same chord.Whether you're team New Line Cinema or team Platinum Dunes, this episode slices into what makes A Nightmare on Elm Street a pillar of horror—and why Freddy Krueger continues to haunt our collective subconscious.Thank you, everyone, for your support. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings was 18-years-old by the time Peter Jackson started considering making his own version in live action. Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh wanted to make something high fantasy, but kept coming back to Tolkien's stories.Acquiring the rights from Saul Zaentz took a while, and at the time Jackson was contracted to Miramax, so Harvey Weinstein took charge. With a planned two-film adaptation, filmed back-to-back, this The Lord of the Rings adaptation was worked on under Miramax. Then the budget started to balloon, but parent company Disney refused to help.Jackson was given an ultimatum by Weinstein - either reduce the number of films to one, continue with two on a heavily reduced budget, or abandon the project entirely and find another studio willing to take it on within four weeks.Jackson and his "fellowship" would choose their own quest to find a new studio, and they ended up at New Line Cinema, where something incredible happened... We present our conclusion to Black History Month with actor focus; this time we celebrate the career of Samuel L. Jackson!  We're looking 3 of his starring vehicles Snakes on a Plane, then The Great White Hype and finally Soul Men, also starring the late, great Bernie Mac!Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most iconic, prolific, and versatile actors in modern cinematic history. With a career spanning over five decades, Jackson has appeared in more than 150 films, cementing his status as a cultural icon and a box office powerhouse. His breakthrough role came in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever (1991), but it was his unforgettable performance as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) that propelled him to global stardom. That role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and introduced audiences to his signature blend of charisma, intensity, and humor — all delivered with that unmistakable commanding voice.Throughout his career, Jackson has balanced blockbuster success with critically acclaimed performances. He's a staple in Tarantino's films, appearing in Jackie Brown, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight, showcasing his ability to deliver complex, morally ambiguous characters with unmatched flair. His work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury has made him a cornerstone of one of the most successful film franchises in history, introducing him to a new generation of fans.Despite his widespread popularity, Samuel L. Jackson's awards recognition has often lagged behind his cultural impact. In addition to his Oscar nomination for Pulp Fiction, Jackson has received numerous honors, including a BAFTA Award, Golden Globe nominations, and an Honorary Academy Award in 2022, recognizing his lifetime achievements and contributions to cinema.Jackson's legacy is defined not only by his memorable performances but also by his ability to elevate even the most minor roles into something unforgettable. Whether in gritty dramas, high-octane action films, or sharp comedies, his presence demands attention, often turning supporting parts into scene-stealing moments. Beyond acting, Jackson's influence extends to his advocacy for diversity in Hollywood, his mentorship of younger actors, and his efforts to champion independent filmmakers. With a career that seamlessly spans indie gems, blockbusters, and prestige films, Samuel L. Jackson stands as a living legend whose legacy is defined by his versatility, consistency, and undeniable cultural presence — a true icon whose impact will resonate for generations to come.Snakes on a Plane is a 2006 American action thriller[3] film directed by David R. Ellis and starring Samuel L. Jackson. It was released by New Line Cinema on August 18, 2006, in North America and the UK. The film was written by David Dalessandro, John Heffernan, and Sebastian Gutierrez and follows the events of dozens of venomous snakes being released on a passenger plane in an attempt to kill a trial witness. The Great White Hype is a 1996 American sports comedy film directed by Reginald Hudlin. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Peter Berg, Damon Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, Jon Lovitz, Cheech Marin, John Rhys-Davies, Salli Richardson and Jamie Foxx. The film satirizes racial preferences in boxing, and was inspired by Larry Holmes's 1982 fight with Gerry Cooney (who was known as "The Great White Hope") and Mike Tyson's 1995 return fight vs. Peter McNeeley. Entertainment Weekly called Rev. Fred Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson) a "Don King-clone."Soul Men is a 2008 American musical comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sharon Leal and Sean Hayes, released on November 7, 2008. It was one of three Mac's films that were released after his death (and was actually released on the same date as another posthumous film, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa).Mac and Isaac Hayes died on August 9 and 10, 2008, respectively. Director Lee said the film was heavily re-edited to soften the tone of the film, as a tribute to the two actors.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

For the capstone of his Hollywood Stories series exploring the 1990s — an era of explosive creativity and innovation in the entertainment industry — Richard Rushfield talks to two execs who helped New Line Cinema become the movie studio of that golden moment. Mike De Luca is today the co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, but in the '90s he was the head of production at New Line, a powerful role he stepped into at the tender age of 27. Richard Brener started as a temp at New Line in 1995 and never left, working his way up to run the studio (now a division of Warner Bros.) as its president and chief creative officer. Together they recall how the indie house launched by Bob Shaye in 1967 struck gold nearly 30 years later with comedy blockbusters (Austin Powers, Dumb and Dumber, Rush Hour, The Wedding Singer) and revered auteur-driven dramas (American History X, Boogie Nights, Se7en). As an indie, "you were kind of locked into lower-budget acquisitions and films — that all coalesced into a business plan of sleeper hits," De Luca says. “We were not afraid of trying things that we liked, even if other people had passed on them.” Learn more about your ad choices.   It's one of his most beloved tales, but was written in a hurry and under duress. On this holiday episode of Dialogue, Marcia Franklin talks with Boise writer Samantha Silva about "A Christmas Carol," penned by Charles Dickens in 1843. In her debut novel, "Mr. Dickens and His Carol," Silva melds fact with fiction to imagine how Dickens came up with the plot for his now-classic story. Of Silva's work, Pulitzer Prize-winner and Boise resident Anthony Doerr says, "It's as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it's all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps." Silva talks with Franklin about what drew her to Dickens, how she researched her book, why she thinks "A Christmas Carol" crystallizes Dickens' ethos, and why the story is still relevant. A graduate of Boise State University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Silva is a screenwriter who has sold projects to Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, and TNT. A film version of her short story, "The Big Burn," won the One Potato Short Screenplay Competition at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival and will be released in 2018. Silva will also be writing another novel.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime was a MASSIVE box office failure, making under $5 million opening weekend! The word on the street is the anime was made on fly just so New Line can keep the movie rights to do the Gollum movies nobody wants. The Lord of the Rings anime was reportedly fast-tracked through production to maintain New Line Cinema's control of feature film rights, rather than for potential box office success. Lord of the Rings anime set a disappointing record for the franchise with a mere $4.6 million opening weekend on a $30 million budget, requiring at least $60 million to break even. Sony is pushing back the third Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie from 2025 to 2026 or later due to Craven the Hunter's poor performance. Craven the Hunter bombed with an $11 million opening weekend from 3,200 theaters, marking the worst start for a Sony-produced Marvel film. The Lord of the Rings franchise is currently in a difficult place, with the Amazon series and Gollum video game damaging the brand, while the anime's 51% Rotten Tomatoes score and lowest domestic gross further hurt its reputation.

From his beginnings in entertainment as a trumpet player… to his obsession with cinema leading to his eventual career path working as an editor on such classics as THE BURNING (1981)… to becoming a feature director wrangling the “interesting” character that is Jack Palance in the cult-classic ALONE IN THE DARK (1982)… to his stories from the making of 1985's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE (the “tongue” story is a particular gem)… to his particular choice of lens sizes when crafting one of the best car chases from the 80's in THE HIDDEN (1987)… to what it was like directing the late James Earl Jones in his acclaimed HBO movie BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT (1990)… there's a good reason why Jack was one of the most consistent working directors in the fledgling New Line Cinema roster!

40 years ago, slashers took a terrifying turn, when Wes Craven suggested that we could not only be haunted by our nightmares, but also die from the creatures within them.Craven's creation of Freddy Krueger stemmed from a haunting childhood memory that inspired the character - called Fred Krueger in this movie only - and the true unexplained deaths of Cambodian immigrants who randomly died in their sleep. While cinema was becoming saturated with cheap, clichéd knock-offs after Halloween and Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street would successfully reinvent the genre; blending supernatural slasher horror with innovative visual effects on a low budget. Despite initial rejections from major studios, New Line Cinema took a chance on this unique horror concept, leading to huge success for the fledgling independent production company, and Robert Englund's portrayal of Freddy Krueger would become one of horror's most iconic villains, and make Englund synonymous with the character across the franchise. But don't pour blood-coloured water on live electrics... SOMEBODY....STOP HIM!!!  Of course we're referring to Stanley Ipkiss played by Jim Carrey once he puts on that mask, the titular mask for this Summer '94 blockbuster smash which was based on a graphic novel of the same name.  Directed by Chuck Russell (Eraser) this was released amidst a breakout year for Carrey, smack between blockbusters Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber.  But THIS was the one where he got to stretch a bit....LITERALLY. :) Carrey plays a mild-mannered banker who one night finds a mysterious mask in the dock of the fictious Edge City where he lives.  He soon finds out that once he puts on that mask at night, it transform him into a cartoonishly green party animal who can sing, dance, and do impressions with the best of them!  Also starring in this comic book adapted comedy is Peter Greene, Peter Riegert, and in her big screen debut Cameron Diaz.  It's time to P-A-R-T-Y.....WHY?  Because he's GOTTA!!! ;) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Costner resuscitated his career as a leading man thanks to television with Yellowstone and then surprisingly left the series to begin work on Horizon (which may have been a factor in his wife's filing for divorce after he started selling his properties to finance the production). Warner Bros. through its studio New Line Cinema agreed to release the first two instalments, initially scheduled to open within weeks of one another, but when the first chapter tanked at the box office the studio indefinitely postponed the release of Chapter Two. Corey and I went to see the first one (in an empty theatre) and we talk about the film as Costner's personal vision, how it compares to his other films as a director, and how this planned theatrical epic still cannot escape the shadow of television or transcend the history of the genre.
