Our exit today has us realizing that our one vice is that we're too nice. This week, we are looking at a double feature of films of men behaving badly and "learning to be better people." First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. But our final reviews may surprise you a little!Thememusic by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.
We're really loving the nostalgia lately. This week's deep dive features a delightfully young Dakota Fanning and the forever quirky Brittney Murphy. Courtney and Rose again realize that the love interest in these Rom-Coms are just NPCs for a subplot that doesn't even matter. The men were actually wholly unnecessary. Which tracks, if we're being honest.

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2022] On Episode 392 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with actor and tennis coach Christopher Crabb about how he went from both competing on the court and acting at the highest level to coaching famous celebrities. Chris is a tennis coach in Los Angeles with an A-list rolodex of clients. His tennis students include George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Kline, Elle Fanning, Steve Carell, Pete Wentz from Fallout Boy, Dakota Fanning and Jeff Probst. Chris tutored Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar-nominated role in the film "Chaplin," for which Chris also served as tennis coordinator. He began acting at the age of eight and has starred in many commercials, movies and series including the remake of "A Christmas Carol", "Danger Bay", "Life Goes On", "Rebel Highway", and many more. Chris was a highly-ranked junior tennis player and turned pro at the age of 16. He has defeated grand slam champions Michael Chang and Jim Courier. On the show, you'll learn how Chris developed his skills in tennis and acting and how he managed to do both at the highest level, the biggest challenges he faces when teaching celebrities, his unique green jacket approach of coaching, the biggest mistakes that amateur tennis players make, why players don't play well during competition vs. practice, and much more! I hope you enjoy my interview with Chris! Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments below! Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
Drones reported in Bayonne, New Jersey! No —actually it's our episode celebrating Stephen Spielberg's epic Sci-Fi thriller based on H. G. Wells novel. This classic earned notoriety from the now famous production of the radio play by Orsen Welles Mercury Theater, which was so convincing that some listeners really believed Martians had landed in Grover's Mill, NJ. In 1953, Paramount would release a full cinematic treatment with some of the most impressive visual effects at the time, and we're rewarded with an Oscar for their efforts. Spielberg's installment is updated and brilliantly paced, and the visual effects are (we think) some of best in an era dominated by digital “gloss”. Tom Cruise turns in one of his best performances, and a young Dakota Fanning makes another entry as a child actor into what has been a long and successful transition to present day. This film is a gripping and fun ride. And we thank Tim Robbins for totally creeping us out in the role of Harlan Olgivy. Awards season has arrived in the form of the Golden Globes nominations. The awards, which honor both movies and television programs, is often viewed as a preview of the upcoming Oscars. In this week's episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz go over the list, focusing largely on the movies, which tend to shine brightest at the ceremony. But they also take time to review a few of the TV shows, including the great, but rarely funny "The Bear," which is again in the comedy or musical category. We also have an interview with "Nickel Boys" director RaMell Ross, who spoke with Miller prior to the film receiving a nomination for best drama. Miller also talked with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who starred in the film. Greetings, nerds! The dynamic duo is back this week with a new podcast! We dive into the Primetime Emmys, celebrating "Shogun" for its historic 18 awards sweep and "The Bear" for breaking its own record with season two. We speculate on the potential award darlings for the 2025 Emmys. Sarah discusses her mixed feelings about the new Netflix show "The Perfect Couple," starring Nicole Kidman and Dakota Fanning. Despite the hype, Sarah finds it to be an average murder mystery with unremarkable characters. We then focus on upcoming shows like "Agatha All Along" and "The Penguin," sharing our cautious optimism and mixed reviews from early viewers. (0:00) In our deep dive, we break down episodes five and six of "Supacell." We discuss the intense character developments, the show's handling of real-world issues like sickle cell anemia, and the powerful yet unsettling scenes that left us with many questions. We wrap up by discussing the season finale of "Supacell," its strong character arcs, and the intriguing cliffhanger that sets up season two. Kevin and Lauren are back this week on a big Netflix binge with Love is Blind (UK), The Deliverance, The Perfect Couple, Irena's Vow, and Job. This episode starts with a heave dose of reality - both of the reality TV kind and some interesting true stories. Lauren kicks it off with Love is Blind UK. Unlike Kevin's favorite show, Love Island, Love is Blind is more of a social experiment than a competition. Taking it to the UK allows it to soft reset and get away from some of the social media aspect out of the gate. All in all, Lauren is enjoying this season so far. Next up, Kevin takes us to spooky town with The Deliverance. No, not the one with the banjos... This is based on the true story of the Ammons family from Geary, Indiana. This version takes place in PA, but holds on to much of the bones (see what I did there?) of the true story. Crazy enough, some of the most outlandish seeming things in the movie are well documented in real life! Sticking with true stories, Lauren settles the tone down with the WWI story, Irena's Vow. It's the story of a Polish woman, barely making it herself, who takes on the incredible task of saving nearly a dozen Jews during the war. It's a wonderful story with a very authentic feel and definitely worth the watch! Steering away from reality (like really far away from reality...) Kevin talks about the new murder mystery series, The Perfect Couple, on (you guessed it) Netflix. It stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Dakota Fanning, and a handful of other actors. It's like Big Little Lies or White Lotus Lite. It's not bad, but it's not quite anything special, either. The upside is that it's just 6 episodes, so if you want to give it a shot, it's not a huge commitment. Lauren takes us out with some Broadway talk. This week, it's about the show Job. It's a stage play, not a musical and it has a reasonable run time, so it's almost like going to a movie! The subject matter gets a little heavy, but it's a great show about mental health and obsession in the modern age of technology. It got an extended run, so if you are in the area, definitely catch it if you can! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! This week, Sami, Aleen, and Jordana catch up on airplane shoe etiquette (on or off in the bathroom?) before diving into last night's VMAs, from live performances to fashion choices. Taylor swept for Fortnight, but we're not buying it as the legitimate Song of the Summer. Meanwhile, Taylor and Travis are doing everything in their power to make us forget about that publicity breakup conspiracy document, and honestly… it's kind of working. In related billionaire news, Selena Gomez officially joined the club this week, with the success of Rare Beauty. We love a self-made woman, and we will be sat for her upcoming film Emilia Perez. Up at TIFF, JLo and Matt Damon were spotted having an intense conversation while holding hands at the after party for Unstoppable, which stars JLo and is produced by Matt and Ben's production company. What could they have been talking about? And finally, Netflix's The Perfect Couple dropped this week and we have… critiques (except for Dakota Fanning, who was perfect). Listen for the full rundown on why it didn't work for us. Our Betch of the Week is Selena, and we're packing the plane to the Caymans with the writers room of The Perfect Couple. The 15th anniversary re-release of Coraline is crushing it at the box office and Olivia and Emily break down why it's still a hit. They cover everything from claymation (and Olivia's obsession), the beautiful world building, the exaggerated and fun characters, whether or not it's horror, and the crazy film theories surrounding Coraline. Of course you'll also hear Liv and Em recall the first time they watched Coraline at ages 6 and 8, and why Emily, to this day, can't watch horror movies.Coraline was directed by Henry Selick, starring Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher and was re-released on August 15, 2024, based on the novella by Neil Gaiman.
"His stories were good because he imagined them intensely, so intensely that he came to believe them." So wrote Patricia Highsmith in her seminal literary thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1955. You might also characterise the work of our guest today, the talented Mr. Steven Zaillian, this way. The worlds and characters of his films and TV shows are imagined in such rich detail and complexity that you can absolutely imagine him believing them to be real as he crafts them on the page. In fact, that level of detail and depth has been his calling card for over thirty decades in Hollywood now. From 1990's Awakenings and 1993's Schindler's List, which won Steven an Oscar, all the way to films like Gangs of New York, American Gangster, Moneyball, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Irishman, there's a thrillingly convincing quality about whatever story he's telling – oftentimes, his characters are people you can imagine pulling up a barstool next to you and telling you a tale you'll never forget. This month, he's up for an Emmy for his work with Ripley – a Netflix adaptation of Highsmith's novel, that Steven acted as showrunner for, writing and directing every episode. The series is a hypnotising ten hours in the company of a conman, Tom Ripley, who's hired by a wealthy businessman to convince his son to return home from a life of leisure abroad on the Italian coast. But the more Tom – played here by Andrew Scott – ensconces himself in the lives of Dickie Greenleaf, played by Johnny Flynn, and Dakota Fanning as his partner, Marge Sherwood, the more his lies and his lust for what Dickie has mutates into something murderous. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Steven tells us about the relevance of fraudster stories in a time of Trump and other public deceivers. We get into the writing tricks and tips that make you root for the morally thorny characters he often writes. And the rationale behind every change from both the novel and the Matt Damon-starring 1999 adaptation of Ripley is uncovered too, as we delve into the slightly different ending to this version of the tale and the meaning of Italian artist Caravaggio's presence throughout this story. This week we're covering the new Amazon Prime flick, Jackpot, Netflix's Emily in Paris, the modern Mad Max movies, The Watchers, and I Used To Be Funny. Kevin opens the show with the new John Cena/Awkwafina joint, Jackpot. It's a fun action fest that doesn't really do anything new. But the real question is... does it need to? It's about 80% action and a bunch of quippy jokes and that's just great, dangit!! Next up, Lauren takes us across the pond to talk about Emily in Paris. It's now in it's 4th season and going strong. She is absolutely loving it for what it is, a fun show about fun young people just... having fun! She honestly can't recommend it enough, so give it a watch if that's your jam at all (and maybe even if it isn't)!! We then go from the light joy of Paris to the futuristic wastelands of the most recent two Mad Max films. Kevin has FINALLY watched these films and, much to his own surprise, he really enjoyed them. It took about 30+ minutes to really get into Fury Road, but after that it was smooth sailing, all the way to the end of Furiosa. Definitely must watch films. Lauren then takes us back across the pond once more with the Dakota Fanning film, The Watchers (not to be confused with Dean Koontz's Watchers). It's a trippy semi-horror flick directed by the youngest Shyamalan daughter. It's an imperfect film and might be better if you have an understanding of the old Irish folktales about changelings. Kevin then asks Lauren to take us out on a happy note with a Rachel Sennott film, but the joke was on him, as I Used To Be Funny is more of a drama than a comedy. There are some heavy themes there, but the general consensus is that Rachel is phenomenal in it. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! The first-time Emmy nominee reflects on her more than two decades in show business, from I Am Sam to Man on Fire and culminating in perhaps the most exciting period of her career so far as an actor. Plus, Fanning teases where we might see her next, including the starry Netflix limited series The Perfect Couple.
This week on Nerds Talking, our main topic is the shocking attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. On July 13, 2024, Trump, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee in the 2024 presidential election, was shot and wounded in his right ear while addressing a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Who was behind this attack? What were their motives? Numerous theories abound, but we are committed to uncovering the truth and digging deep into the details. This incident could have drastically altered the course of the nation had the assassin succeeded. In addition to this gripping main story, we cover some other notable, albeit less critical, topics. We discuss Michael Jackson's mother and her recent legal battle to claim royalties from the late singer's estate. Moreover, we review the supernatural horror film The Watchers. This 2024 American film, written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan in her directorial debut and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, is based on the 2022 novel by A. M. Shine. It stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, and Oliver Finnegan. The story follows Mina, an American expatriate working in a pet shop in Galway, Ireland, who is haunted by the death of her mother, which she accidentally caused fifteen years earlier. Estranged from her twin sister Lucy, Mina embarks on a journey to deliver a golden conure parrot to a zoo near Belfast. When her car breaks down in a forest, she becomes stranded and meets an old woman named Madeline, along with two other occupants, Ciara and Daniel, in a bunker-like building called "The Coop." They soon discover they are being watched by mysterious entities known as "The Watchers" through a mirrored window every night. Join us for an episode filled with in-depth analysis, thought-provoking discussion, and our honest review of The Watchers. Who watches the watchers? We do! In this episode of Horror Movie Talk, we review the nepo baby Ishana Night Shyamalan's new horror movie The Watchers. Should you watch it? Watch to find out. Synopsis The watchers is the first feature length film by writer/director Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M Night Shyamalan. Her previous work includes being a writer/director on her father's Servant series on Apple TV+. In this film, Dakota Fanning plays Mina, an American expat in Ireland who is tasked with delivering a parrot. Along the way she gets lost in some weird woods from which there is no escape. There she finds a group of people that have also been stranded in the woods. They lead her into a solitary shelter in the middle of the forest and explain that they are to stand as display in a two way mirror for mysterious killer creatures that come out at night. As the days pass, Mina attempts to learn more about the woods to find an escape. Review of The Watchers The film sits currently at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I can say that that seems pretty harsh. It's not a terrible movie, but it's not great either. As they say in the old country, The Shyamalan doesn't fall far from the tree. This film suffers from some of the same on-the nose dialogue and an overreliance on exposition to tell the story. The set up is ripe for possibilities. Could it be a human zoo run by aliens or interdimensional travelers? Could it be an elaborate hallucination? Could it be a time loop? In the end, the explanation is a little more close to home and fantastical that science fiction, which was actually a welcome surprise. However, I still feel there was a lot of lost opportunity around hallucination, and shape shifting, which are both present in the story. The film was bought purportedly for 30 million, and hasn't yet made back half of that in the box office. If you are wondering if it is worth it to see in the theaters, I think the litmus test is whether you thought it was worth it to see Old in the theaters. Score 5/10
