According to author, MMA coach, and one of the first people in the United States to receive a black belt in jiu-jitsu, Matt Thornton, violence is as natural to human evolution as sex and food. In his book, “The Gift of Violence: Surviving and Thriving in a Dangerous World,” Matt provides the tools and mindset necessary to avoid—and if necessary, engage in—violent encounters. Matt has been Peter Boghossian's Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach for over a decade, and they are also close friends. In this intimate conversation, they discuss the practical value of jiu-jitsu and MMA training. Matt outlines specific moves to gain control in a fight and the importance of situational awareness and weapon training. According to Matt, many people have a glamorized view of violence and do not understand the limits of their own capabilities. Worse still, ideology has blunted people's connection to defensive evolutionary instincts, resulting in dangerous encounters that could be avoided. Matt Thornton has taught functional martial arts for more than 30 years. He holds a 5th-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is the founder of Straight Blast Gym International, training champion MMA fighters and world-class law enforcement instructors. Matt addresses policing, gang violence, and crime data in his series “Wokeness, Public Safety, BLM, & Antifa.” Watch this episode on YouTube.

Travis Davison is the VP of Straight Blast Gym International, and along with his wife Kisa, the owner of multiple SBG facilities, and a black belt with over 20 years in BJJ. He's also my coach. When my wife and I made the decision last summer to move our family to the Flathead Valley, Travis' gym, SBG, was one of the reasons we chose Kalispell. We related to his and Kisa's story of the peaks and valley's of early success and business followed by failure. How you deal with that failure and the decisions you make in life to pick your self up and move forward. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. Jon Boone is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a recent transplant to the Flathead Valley of Montana. Originally from Canada, he emigrated to the United States, found BJJ and dove in headfirst, eventually opening his own academy. Like many affected by the pandemic, he is re-inventing himself with his love for French cuisine with his company Salt and Butter. Travis Davison is the vice president of Straight Blast Gym International, the owner of multiple SBG facilities, and a 20 + year BJJ practitioner as well as my coach. For those that think that these episodes are only about Jiu-Jitsu, you could not be more mistaken. Often times we talk more about life than anything that happens on the mat. Enjoy

Today on the show I have the honor to engage in conversation with the 4th degree eligible BJJ black belt Stephen Whittier. Stephen is one of the most decorated martial arts instructors in the country, he is one of only a handful of head coaches with Straight Blast Gym International (under SBG founder Matt Thornton) as well as the organization's Director. He is also the South Coast region's highest-ranking instructor in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (under New England's senior ranked black belt, Roberto Maia) and Muay Thai kickboxing (under Sityodtong USA director, Mark DellaGrotte). In 2018, he became only the 4th trainer ever to earn the rank of Red Monkgol in Sitydtong Muay Thai. In addition, he has earned black belts and instructor ranks in a number of martial arts disciplines over decades of study and has trained a broad range of students and athletes – from local, state, and federal law enforcement to multiple UFC competitors. Due to his parallel background as a former University lecturer and consultant, Stephen brings a unique and deeply analytical perspective to his martial arts and business instruction. He also runs 40 Plus BJJ which is dedicated to the unique tactical and technical needs of Jiu-Jitsu students and instructors 40 and up. Stephen truly is a renaissance man and deep thinker as I researched and spoke to the man I quickly came to this conclusion both by seeing his vast body of work, experience, and products available as well as his systems thinking approach to almost everything. If you are a practitioner or BJJ business owner I think you will gain much inspiration and more importantly immediate value out of listening to Stephens's story and ever-evolving perspectives. It was both a joy and honor to speak to Mr. Whittier and I hope this is the first of many conversations we eventually have. From leaving Jeet Kune Do, to being one of the first MMA gyms, coaching Randy Couture and spreading the SBG organization across the whole globe including places such as Korea, Africa and Australia - this is the story of Straight Blast Gym International and how it came to be, told by its founder Matt Thornton
I talk to Matt Thornton. Matt is the founder of Straight Blast Gym International or SBG and is a 4th-degree BJJ Black Belt under Chris Hauter. We discuss how coming up in the 90s lead him to emphasise training against resisting opponents in a concept he outlines further called Aliveness. Also, how cross-training in multiple arts can teach you the delivery systems of each style while also identifying the common themes between them all, which can then be considered fundamentals. And finally, how real-life testing can lead to scepticism and critical thinking to help you identify the truths found in martial arts. The question of whether BJJ work in the street is a commonly asked question with a lot of misunderstanding, especially from traditional martial artists. To debunk this question I am joined by coach Matt Thornton, founder of Straight Blast Gym International with years of experience in both traditional and functional martial arts to help answer this question.
