There are lots of things we do without thinking about the reason we do them. A relevant example on a Sunday morning is how we order our worship services. Why do we worship? More specifically, why do we do the certain things we do in worship? It's called the liturgy - which means the work of the people. There's an intentionality to it - a reason - a purpose for the order in which we do things and this Hebrews passage helps us think through it. Act one of worship is The Approach to God. There's a welcome - an invitation to stand and sing. We're approaching the divine. In Hebrews, it talks about two mountains - one is wild, the other is sort of mild. The first mountain represents the tangible presence of God through symbols - fire, darkness, gloom, storm - it's the untouchable untamed presence of God. The other mountain is invitational - it's almost like there's a party going on. The Approach to God - it's fear and awe inspiring and yet at the same time it's invitational. It's like Niagra Falls, or the Grand Canyon. From far away, it's beautiful - but get too close and you realize it could kill you - you're mortal. Or it's like a lion - from far away, it's beautiful. But you get close enough and you realize your life is frail, imperfect, small. When we approach God, something like that happens. We recognize the sheer beauty while at the same time recognizing our smallness and our capacity to make a mess of things. This is why we leave room for confession of sins in the prayer - that's why we open ourselves up for receive forgiveness. Act two of worship - the Word of God. Now we're in the position to listen to the divine. Verse 25 - see to it that you do not refuse the one who speaks. Some how, some way, through some miracle of the Spirit, God speaks. And when God speaks, shaking happens - verse 27. God shakes loose those things inside of us that don't belong. Transformation happens. Act three - the Response to God. The bulk of this act of worship happens on the outside - the way we live out our lives as transformed people - we become the presence of Jesus where we are whenever we are there. From the first minutes of listening to this week's podcast, you will feel an overwhelming sense of caring and compassion. While in middle school, Marisol's son, Daniel, went on a church trip to Niagra Falls and fell in love. Now, you might think that he fell in love with the beautiful waterfall, but it was the people who impacted Daniel. He saw that beyond tourism, there were people who were truly in need. Daniel felt a strong desire to help. While in high school, Daniel knew he wanted to leave his home state of Maryland and move to western New York to become a doctor. He found a program at Canisius College that offered a program for college and early acceptance to medical school. He was thriving in school until tragedy hit. Daniel was found to have a large cancerous mass in his chest. As soon as Marisol and her husband got off the plane and arrived at that hospital in Buffalo, they were welcomed. They were offered food as well as places to stay. They even had someone offer his apartment for a shower. The caring people of Buffalo simply blew them away. After his diagnosis, Daniel decided to stay and undergo treatment in his new western New York community. He told his family that he wanted to stay there because someday these same doctors would be his teachers in medical school. The care from these people was unlike anything Marisol ever experienced. They never left their side. After Daniel died, Canisius College planned a mass for Daniel. Marisol was asked by the priest, "How many people do you think will come?" Marisol quickly answered, "No more than twenty." Marisol again underestimated this loving community. The church was packed with hundreds of people. I was so struck by the tremendous love and compassion in Marisol's voice as I spoke with her. She said that she wanted to do this episode to honor not only Daniel, but also the people of Canisius College, Roswell Cancer Center, and all of the people of Buffalo, New York. I am sure that if you asked each one of those people about what they did, however, they would be quick to point back to the amazing loving spirit of young Daniel himself.

The animation mogul considered Niagra Falls and another area near Washington, D.C. “They seemed to settle on St. Louis for a different kind of attraction, kind of incorporating the city and the Mississippi and Walt got into a disagreement with Augie Busch — the family that owned Anheuser-Busch, makers of Busch beer and Budweiser — and basically Augie Busch said to Walt, ‘Hey you are not coming to St. Louis if you are not serving beer,' and he wanted the beer concession and Walt said, ‘We are not going to serve any beer or liquor in the Magic Kingdom' and it kind of went downhill from there. And literally, they had the dinner the night before, Augie Busch made a comment, and they were supposed to sign the papers the next morning, and Walt called it off, so it was that close.” Clark said Busch was greatly insulted. “That was his thing. I mean, he had the beer concession for the football teams, for the baseball teams, and here was this major thing coming to St. Louis telling him, ‘No, we don't want your product in our theme park,'” Clark said. But Disney wasn't budging. “Walt was worried that it was going to end up kinda like a carnival or a county fair or something like that and he did not want drinking in his park,” Clark said. The investigation began after family members reported her missing when they had not seen or heard from her since Thursday. When officers conducted a welfare check at her apartment, they found neither Dubignon nor her boyfriend, Freddrick Durham, who lived with her, and her car was missing. Dubignon's body was later discovered in a suitcase inside her apartment. Durham was tracked to Atlanta and taken into custody by the Atlanta Police Department and Georgia State Patrol. As a couple was coming home from Niagra Falls in the 1960s, they could look up into the sky and spot something that appeared to be following the car. Continuing on their 178 mile treck, it woudl be come apparent that whatever it was, was behaving unlike any plane they had ever seen before or anything meteor that they had seen in the sky. Eventually the thing would descend down towards them, as hours of their life appeared to have just vanished. But what really happened that night in 1961 and how were these two impacted by what they saw? Lets take a look at that in todays episode!
