Twelve years ago, former President Barack Obama focused his State of the Union address on education, calling for the training of 100,000 new teachers of science and mathematics. By 2021, that 100,000 goal had been achieved, but there was still work to be done. And in 2022, the U.S. Department of Education announced its You Belong in STEM initiative, designed to bring equity and high-quality STEM education to America's schools. How do we ensure that STEM teachers are given the tools necessary to succeed? What challenges do we face in bringing high-quality STEM education to our nation's classrooms? And how can we ensure that STEM education is helping our students understand the problems of today… and tomorrow? In this episode, Kevin explores how we can best support and cultivate STEM teachers with Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten and Beyond 100K founder Talia Milgrom-Elcott.
Talia Milgrom-Elcott is the founder and Executive Director of Beyond100K, a national network of the nation's top academic institutions, nonprofits, foundations, companies, and government agencies focused on centering equity and belonging in their pursuit to prepare and retain 150,000 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers over a decade, by 2032.
100Kin10 has taken up the bold goal of ending the STEM teacher shortage in the U.S. What started as a call to action from President Obama in 2011 has become a vast national network of educators, employers and nonprofits who are collaborating, innovating and sharing the resources that prepared over 100,000 STEM teachers in the last 10 years. In 2011, President Obama made a call for the U.S. to prepare 100,000 excellent STEM teaches in 10 years. At the time, the word "STEM" was not yet the common term it is today. The U.S. was behind globally in STEM programming and education. This presidential call was an important goal that would have long-term ripple effects in both education and the future workforce. After hearing the call, Talia Milgrom-Elcott took up President Obama's challenge. She launched 100Kin10, a national nonprofit dedicated to creating a network of collaborators and resources that would enable 100,000 STEM teachers to be trained by 2021. In the end, they surpassed their goal with over 108,000 STEM teachers prepared to inspire the next generation of students in STEM education.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Collaboration is crucial to achieve big goals: Talia recognized early on that no single person or organization could reach this goal on their own. 100Kin10 made it their work to inspire and mobilize hundreds of organizations to take up this mission, own their role in it and help make it a reality. When tackling any multi-faceted problem, prioritize the issues that have the most leverage: Through their nationwide research, the organization found that there are hundreds of challenges that have created this chronic STEM teacher shortage. To achieve the 100Kin10 goal, the partners would have to focus on solving the biggest issues that would have the greatest impact.Don't reinvent the wheel; and let the experts in the room do the problem-solving: For each of these STEM teacher shortage issues, there was most likely a solution that had been developed somewhere in the world. The initiative created a national, common space for all those teachers and resources to be connected to each other, share ideas and take successful strategies back to their own districts. Whether it was sharing resources that already worked or putting people together to create solutions that were then spread across the network, 100Kin10 let the experts in the room do what they do best. What's next for 100Kin10?10 years have gone by and 100Kin10 have surpassed their goal, but the STEM teacher shortage isn't ended. Recently, they've been listening to the stories of young people who have been most excluded from STEM learning. This has laid the groundwork for their next big goal: to prepare and retain 150,000 teaches in the next 10 years. The pandemic is transforming education. Is it also changing the skill requirements for our nations' 3.5 million teachers? Kevin explores this conversation with noted political scientist and prolific author, Rick Hess and the trailblazer you haven't heard of, but wish you had – Talia Milgrom-Elcott of 100kin10. Rick has written more books than most of us could conceive of on our own. A noted scholar and analyst, Rick, brings an extensive background to the discussion. As Florida seeks to fill all its classrooms — a recent survey showed 2,200 vacancies halfway through the year — the need for science and math teachers continues to vex schools. Teachers in those subjects continue to top the state's annual list of critical needs, recently approved by the Florida Board of Education for 2019-20. Are there steps either the state or local school districts can take to find and keep enough teachers in the STEM fields? Talia Milgrom-Elcott, executive director of 100Kin10, speaks with reporter Jeff Solochek about the possibilities. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Teachers at Work: Designing Schools Where Teachers and Students Thrive is a new report produced by 100Kin10. Today, I'm talking with Talia Milgrom-Elcott the co-founder and executive director of 100Kin10. Teachers at Work: Designing Schools Where Teachers and Students Thrive focuses on what needs to happen in schools to make its teacher corps want to stay and inspire youth. In the introduction of the report, this is stated: “When teachers flourish as professionals in schools, they leave the classroom far less frequently and have significantly higher satisfaction.” Talia talked with me about this statement as well as much more concerning the future of schools, its students, and its teachers. Under her leadership, 100Kin10 which is focused on training and producing 100,000 STEM teachers in 10 years is becoming a reality as more than 250 leading organizations from across sectors have come together to make the goal possible by 2021. Talia is a frequent public speaker and moderator, focusing on social innovation, science and technology, education, philanthropy, and the tenuous balancing act that is running a start-up, being a mother and trying to have a life. Widely known for her thought leadership, she has been published or profiled in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, the Smithsonian, CNN Money, and US News and World Report. Talia lives in Brooklyn with her husband and three children. Great information. Lots to learn and share. When President Kennedy announced in 1961 that he wanted to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade, it was a longshot. Some believed it to be impossible. However, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped out onto the surface of the moon and that “longshot” became a reality. In January of 2011 President Obama put out his own “moon shot call”—in his State of the Union address, he announced the goal of 100k more science, technology, engineering, and math teachers in in the United States over the next 10 years. And not just any teachers: he wanted excellent teachers to help train the next generation of STEM students. Talia Milgrom-Elcott remembers this speech vividly. It was a rallying cry that she felt deep in her bones. She knew it wasn’t enough to just stand and clap for the announcement (which received wide bipartisan support). Someone needed to do something—why not her? Join us as we discuss how Talia built her team, when she realized how true success would be measured, and the difference between fixing symptoms and solving problems.
