It's Thursday, March 7th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Two Christian Pakistanis acquitted of false blasphemy charges Praise God! A judge in Pakistan acquitted two Christians of false blasphemy charges last Friday. The charges from last year sparked a mob of 5,000 people. They destroyed church buildings and sent hundreds of Christians fleeing. The attorney for the acquitted Christians told Morning Star News, "The brothers are free and are with their family now. However, it is not safe for them to return to Jaranwala due to a serious threat to their lives. Though they have been acquitted from the court, there have been multiple instances where people accused of blasphemy have been killed by vigilantes despite being found innocent by the courts.” Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Pakistan, ranked 7th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Argentinian President Javier Milei opposes “gender ideology” language Argentina's President Javier Milei is continuing to crack down on so-called “inclusive language” in the government. He has opposed “gender ideology” and the reshaping of language to fit sexually perverted lifestyles. On February 23, the country's military announced it would eliminate inclusive language. And on February 27, a Milei spokesman said the country will “initiate actions to ban inclusive language … throughout the national public administration.” Milei was elected last November and is known for opposing socialism and abortion as well. Donald Trump trounced Nikki Haley on Super Tuesday Fifteen states held their presidential primary elections on Super Tuesday. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump overwhelmingly won the primaries for their respective parties. Biden has 1,500 delegates and needs just over 1,900 to secure the Democrat nomination. No other Democrat candidate secured delegates. Trump won every Republican primary yesterday, except in Vermont, where Nikki Haley won. TRUMP: “They call it Super Tuesday for a reason. (Cheers) This is a big one! “November 5th is going to go down as the single most important day in the history of our country. (claps) And we're going to make it like it should be: respected. Right now, we're not respected. Right now, our country is known as a joke. It's a joke. Other leaders, who I speak to, other leaders can't believe what happened to us. “Because three years ago, we were the most respected country anywhere in the world by far. We were doing things that nobody could believe. China was paying us billions and billions of dollars. In twenty five years, they paid us nothing, zero, not 10 cents. I was getting billions of dollars. And we were respected by everybody. “We had no wars. Remember when I had the debate with Hillary Clinton? She said, ‘Look, look at him. Look at that personality. He's going to cause wars, wars.' I said, ‘No, my personality is going to keep us out of wars.' And that's what happened.” (cheers) Now, Trump has just over 1,000 delegates. He needs 1,215 to win the Republican nomination, setting him on track for a rematch with Biden. Nikki Haley exits race, refuses to endorse Trump Yesterday morning, Nikki Haley, Trump's last major GOP presidential rival in the primaries, suspended her 2024 presidential campaign, reports the Associated Press. HALEY: “I am filled with the gratitude for the outpouring of support we've received from all across our great country. But the time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard. I have done that. I have no regrets. And although I will no longer be a candidate, I will not stop using my voice for the things I believe in. “Our national debt will eventually crush our economy. A smaller federal government is not only necessary for our freedom, it is necessary for our survival. The road to socialism is the road to ruin for America. Our world is on fire because of America's retreat. Standing by our allies in Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan is a moral imperative. But it's also more than that. If we retreat further, there will be more war, not less.” After criticizing Trump throughout her campaign for his divisiveness, his age, and his legal battles that she believes will distract him from campaigning in the general election, Haley refused to endorse Donald Trump for president. HALEY: “In all likelihood, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee when our party convention meets in July. I congratulate him and wish him well. I wish anyone well who would be America's president. “I have always been a conservative Republican and always supported the Republican nominee. But, on this question, as she did on so many others, Margaret Thatcher provided some good advice. When she said, “Never just follow the crowd. Always make up your own mind.' “It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him, and I hope he does that.” Daniel 2:21 says God “changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” Florida cracking down on woke “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” programs Meanwhile, Florida is cracking down on woke Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. The University of Florida announced last Friday it will eliminate these positions. This comes after the Florida Board of Education said last month that taxpayer funds will no longer go to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion positions. Manny Diaz Jr., the state's education commissioner, said, “Higher education must return to its essential foundations of academic integrity and the pursuit of knowledge instead of being corrupted by destructive ideologies.” Christian martyrdom of Perpetua in 2nd century A.D. And finally, today is the traditional anniversary of the death of Perpetua, an early Christian martyr from the 2nd century A.D. Perpetua was a young mother from a prosperous family in Carthage. She and several others were preparing for baptism to join the thriving Christian community there. However, Roman officials had just started to enforce an edict that banned conversion to Christianity. When given a choice between worshipping the emperor and death, Perpetua and the others held fast to their newfound faith. Officials threw them to wild animals in the local arena before beheading them. Some of Perpetua's last words were, “It will all happen in the prisoner's dock as God wills, for you may be sure that we are not left to ourselves but are all in His power.” In Matthew 16:25, Jesus said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Watch the 34-minute animated Torchlighters video called “The Perpetua Story” through a special link in our transcript at www.TheWorldview.com. On tonight's program: After much debate – and even a gubernatorial veto – Florida lawmakers have a modified version of a bill to restrict kids under the age of 14 from access to online social media platforms; Controversy continues over a measure that prohibits sleeping or camping on public property, except in special areas designated by and paid for municipalities; The Florida Board of Education would likely be tasked with developing an anti-communism curriculum for public school students from kindergarten to senior high school; And revenue from the gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida would help pay for environmental improvement projects under a bill now headed to the governor.
This past week marked an important turn at the University of Florida, under the governance of its former Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE). The university confirmed that it will be dispensing with all personnel associated with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This move signifies a considerable triumph for the Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and cohorts who have been championing the withdrawal of such race-centered programs from state-run educational institutions. The adjustment comes in substantial compliance with regulation 9.016 of the Florida Board of Governor, 'a restriction on prohibited expenditures'. Consequently, the University of Florida has ceased running its Office of the Chief Diversity Officer, cut ties with DEI role holders and administrators, and discontinued contracts revolving around DEI with external service providers, as reported in a memo by several key university administrators and shared by the school's primary news source. Further details shared in the memo indicate that the laid-off DEI staff will be provided with a compensation constituting 12 weeks of pay. Interestingly, the $5 million budget, initially reserved for DEI activities, will now be channeled into a faculty recruitment fund. The university leadership has also left an open invitation for the displaced DEI personnel to consider applying for other roles within the institution by the 19th of April. It's touted this would provide them with 'expedited consideration'. Closing the memo, the university administration ingrained their institutional commitment towards upholding 'universal human dignity'. This affirmation seeks to reassure stakeholders during this period of significant change. This decision has not only been a significant step for the University of Florida but is also seen as a major victory for conservatives fighting against such initiatives in public Higher Education establishments.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Board of Nursing defines a declaratory statement as a means for resolving a controversy or answering questions or doubts concerning the applicability of statutory provisions, rules, or orders over which the board, or department when there is no board. On September 26, 2022, Jessica James, a registered nurse (R.N.) from Pensacola, Florida requested a declaratory statement on clarification for the task delegation of Botox Cosmetic. The case referenced Florida Statute § 464.003, specifically quoting, “The administration of medications and treatments as prescribed or authorized by a duly licensed practitioner authorized by the laws of this state to prescribe such medications and treatments.” Jessica James' request went on to identify some prerequisites in her case for Botox task delegation eligibility by stating that the physician would first examine the patient and write an order detailing the specific muscles to be injected as well as the units per injection site before delegating the task to a registered nurse. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joneshealthlaw/support

It's an "All Things YouTube and the Creator Economy" episode! We welcome returning guest, director Alex Winter whose latest documentary is The YouTube Effect. You may know Alex Winter for his role as Bill in the Bill & Ted movies, but these days he's an accomplished documentary filmmaker. Many of Alex's films explore the role of technology in our society, such as Downloaded, about the rise and fall of Napster, to Deep Web, about the online black market Silk Road. The YouTube Effect explores the origins of the website, which began in 2005, and its rapid growth into one of the most powerful media platforms today. Interviews with early YouTube creators such as Anthony Padilla of the channel Smosh, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen, and former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki are featured in the movie. The documentary also dives into the many layers of controversy around YouTube, both good and evil. As a free, easy to use public platform with little to no regulation, YouTube is a forum open to all, inspiring the Arab Spring protests and Black Lives Matter movement. But as we've seen in recent years, YouTube also spreads propaganda and can radicalize vulnerable people to dangerous causes. Coming from the world of film, director Alex Winter sees both similarities and differences between the creator economy of YouTube vs. the traditional media economy. He thinks that the entertainment industry has made a mistake in trying to monetize in similar ways to YouTube. The shift into streaming by media companies hasn't monetized well for anyone, nor is it sustainable- hence the current WGA and SAG strike. Both industries currently find themselves at a crossroads: they need to balance valuing money over the well-being of the workers/creators, and for YouTube's part, to allow regulation in order to stop actual harm to our society. YouTube is a public forum owned and controlled by one of the biggest corporations in the world- Google- with 4.6 billion views a day. People can watch all of their news, all their entertainment, all their TV, even all of our recorded human history there. It's both a search engine and the largest media conglomerate on earth. And the creator economy continues to thrive. As The YouTube Effect points out, by allowing people to simply add their own content, there's no barrier to entry to get started on YouTube. Ad dollars are attached to how many views the content receives. The downside is that YouTube creators feel the grind to constantly make content, because they'll get replaced instantly by someone else. We're in a new phase of YouTube's power, Alex notes, which includes monetizing disinformation and propaganda. YouTube provides no guardrails and no standards and practices for what is posted on the site, and very little on the site is monitored or taken down. As a monopoly, the company has no competition and very little incentive to delete content. As he explores in The YouTube Effect, channels such as Prager University- a right-wing non-accredited online “school”- is heavily funded by dark money, promoting conservative agendas. This disinformation will spread quickly- the Florida Board of Education has just approved PragerU Kids videos to be shown in K-12 schools. Alex believes that YouTube needs regulation to prevent the spread of dangerous propaganda that's funded by ideological interests with deep pockets. Education in media literacy and lessons in how to recognize disinformation for both adults and kids will also be key to creating safer content on the platform. YouTube won't go away and it will evolve- people have created robust communities on the platform, and it is part of our society. You can watch The YouTube Effect streaming on Kanopy, and on VOD: iTunes, Prime Video, VUDU and other platforms. In this episode, Alex starts by discussing how the Florida Board of Education's new K-12 curriculum is propagandizing history (especially slavery). It is downplaying the uniqueness of American slavery to promote American exceptionalism. Next, Alex plays a press conference that Senator Mitch McConnell gave. In the video, McConnell noticeably freezes for over 19 seconds and is taken back to his office. Later in the episode, there has been another coup in the Sahel Region of Africa. The area is known as Africa's “Coup Belt” and the recent coup attempt has occurred in Niger, which has been known as a bastion of democracy and fair elections in the region. There are worries that this coup (if accurately portrayed) could make the fight against jihadism and radicalism more difficult. Finally, it looks like Spain's national elections had better (or less terrible) results than expected. Alex looks at how the far-right party, Vox, did worse than expected and now the center-left and center-right are deadlocked in a coalition-building game of chicken.
Florida's African American studies curriculum. Last week, the Florida Board of Education approved a controversial new curriculum to teach African American history. The 216-page document is part of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act (commonly called the Stop W.O.K.E. Act), which was passed in 2022 and regulates the way race and gender can be taught in the classroom. Among other things, the law prohibits classroom teachings that make students feel guilt over past actions by members of their racial group. On June 28th, 1972, in the case of Furman v. Georgia, the United States Supreme Court declared all existing death penalty laws in the country to be invalid. The decision was reached with a 5-4 vote, with each justice in the majority providing a separate opinion. The Court ruled that the death penalty, as applied at the time, violated the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. The decision led to a de facto moratorium on capital punishment throughout the United States until the case of Gregg v. Georgia in 1976, which allowed for the reinstatement of the death penalty. Furman v. Georgia also resulted in the invalidation of the death penalty for rape in the consolidated cases of Jackson v. Georgia and Branch v. Texas. The Court had intended to include another case, Aikens v. California, but it was dismissed as moot due to a separate ruling in California that deemed the death penalty unconstitutional under the state's constitution. In Furman, the justices in the majority expressed concerns about the arbitrary and discriminatory application of the death penalty, with Justices Stewart, White, and Douglas highlighting the racial bias in its imposition. Justices Brennan and Marshall went further, arguing that the death penalty itself was inherently cruel and unusual punishment and incompatible with evolving societal standards of decency. Marshall also raised concerns about the possibility of wrongful executions due to errors and perjury. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners has announced that it will not use the new version of the bar exam, known as the NextGen Bar Exam, when it is introduced in July 2026. Instead, Florida will continue to use its current bar exam format in 2026 and make a decision later on whether to adopt the NextGen exam after that. The board stated that incoming law students should be aware of the test they will be taking when they graduate in 2026, and this decision will also help law schools in planning their curriculum. The National Conference of Bar Examiners, which is developing the NextGen Bar Exam, agrees that clarity for examinees is important and respects Florida's decision. Florida is the fourth-largest jurisdiction for the bar exam in the United States and the first to publicly announce its position on the format of the July 2026 test. Other states, including California, have also expressed skepticism about the new bar exam and are considering alternative options. The NextGen Bar Exam aims to create a more integrated exam that focuses on legal skills rather than memorization of laws.Florida says no to new bar exam, for now | ReutersAMC Entertainment Holdings and retail investors known for their involvement in meme stocks will face off in a two-day court hearing in Delaware over a stock conversion plan. The court will consider approving a class action settlement worth an estimated $129 million, which would resolve allegations that AMC rigged a shareholder vote against common stockholders. The conversion plan would dilute common stock ownership but help the company pay down its debt. AMC has warned of its precarious financial situation and the potential for bankruptcy without the ability to raise capital, pending the resolution of the litigation. The settlement has faced objections from over 2,800 individuals seeking to opt out and sue separately, dismissing AMC's financial predictions as fear tactics. The investors leading the lawsuit argue that the settlement compensates common stockholders without jeopardizing AMC's future, and they urge the judge to reject the objections. AMC operates over 900 theaters globally and has expressed optimism about future box office sales.AMC, 'meme' investors to face off in court over stock conversion | ReutersCryptocurrency exchange FTX has filed a lawsuit against its former top lawyer, Daniel Friedberg, accusing him of aiding fraud committed by company founder Sam Bankman-Fried and suppressing reports of wrongdoing within the company. The complaint, filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, alleges that Friedberg acted as a "fixer" for FTX executives, enabling the misappropriation of customer funds. FTX claims that Friedberg settled employee complaints by paying inflated amounts and even hired law firms that represented whistleblowers to work for FTX. The lawsuit accuses Friedberg of legal malpractice and breaching his fiduciary duty, seeking the return of millions of dollars' worth of cryptocurrency and other compensation. FTX filed for bankruptcy in 2022, and Bankman-Fried has been criminally charged with misusing customer funds. Friedberg has reportedly cooperated with U.S. investigations into the FTX collapse.FTX accuses ex-lawyer of aiding Bankman-Fried's fraud, silencing whistleblowers | ReutersLittler Mendelson, a prominent law firm specializing in labor and employment matters, has been profiting from Starbucks' efforts to combat a unionizing campaign in its coffee shops across the United States. Littler has assigned over 110 attorneys, including more than 50 partners, to represent Starbucks in union-related cases since late 2021. While the exact amount Starbucks is paying Littler remains undisclosed, the significant number of outside lawyers reflects the substantial legal work generated by the company's anti-union drive. Starbucks, with its substantial revenue of over $32 billion in fiscal year 2022, has allocated significant resources to fight the union and defend against allegations of labor law violations. The majority of legal proceedings involve the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), where Starbucks Workers United has won the majority of elections but has yet to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the company. Starbucks has been hit with numerous unfair labor practice charges, and administrative law judges have ruled against the company in most cases. Starbucks has accused the NLRB of bias and collusion with the union. Littler, with its extensive network of offices nationwide, has become Starbucks' go-to law firm for NLRB-related work. The firm's attorneys from various offices have been involved in union-related cases across the country. Littler has built a reputation for advising companies on labor matters and is known for its aggressive approach to defending employers. The complaint asserts that OpenAI unlawfully accesses personal information from user interactions with its products and through integrations with platforms like Snapchat, Spotify, Stripe, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, enabling the collection of image, location, music preference, financial, and private conversation data. OpenAI is accused of conducting a secretive and massive web scraping operation, violating terms of service agreements, as well as state and federal privacy and property laws. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, a federal anti-hacking law, is cited in the lawsuit. In 2022, the Florida Legislature passed a bill titled the Individual Freedom Act. The bill is better known as the Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act, or the Stop WOKE Act, and it has become a cultural flashpoint across the country. The bill seeks to “protect individual freedoms and prevent discrimination in the workplace and in public schools.” While the bill explicitly authorizes “age-appropriate” classroom discussion of topics such as sexism, slavery, and racial discrimination, it prohibits instruction meant to “indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view inconsistent with the principles of individual freedom or state academic standards.” The bill went into effect on July 1, 2022, and it places new restrictions on Florida's public schools, colleges, universities, and corporations.Proponents of the bill argue that aspects of progressive ideology – often referred to as wokeness – are being aggressively pushed on students, parents, and employees, and the effect is tantamount to ideological oppression and indoctrination. Opponents of the bill say that the Stop WOKE Act infringes upon freedom of speech and thought. Several opponents – including prominent organizations like the ACLU and FIRE – have taken to the courts to block or pare back the bill's influence.Ryan Newman serves as General Counsel to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and he is responsible for driving Florida's litigation defense of the Stop WOKE Act in cases such as Pernell v. Florida Board of Governors, Novoa v. Diaz, and Honeyfund.com Inc. v. DeSantis. Biden reiterated a statement from the FDIC and Treasury Department during public remarks Monday morning, telling reporters that the federal government would guarantee depositors at the banks access to their funds. He added that no such protection is being offered to the banks' investors, however. His administration has also fired the leadership at both banks. "No losses will be borne by the taxpayers," Biden emphasized. "Instead, the money will come from the fees that banks pay into the deposit insurance fund. Because of the actions that our regulators have already taken, every American should feel confident that their deposits will be there if and when they need them." Biden went on to call on Congress to pass legislation to "strengthen rules" on banks to prevent failures like SVB and Signature. The Santa Clara, California-based band collapsed last week and is now under the control of federal regulators. The SVB had been the 16th-largest bank in the U.S. prior to the bank run that led to its downfall. Anxious depositors rushed to withdraw their money over concern for the bank’s health, causing its collapse, which may serve as "an extinction-level event for startups," according to Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan. The Biden administration had earlier assured SVB depositors that they would have access to all of their funds on Sunday. The joint statement from the Treasury Department, Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) also emphasized that the action would come at no cost to US taxpayers. "Today we are taking decisive actions to protect the U.S. economy by strengthening public confidence in our banking system," the joint statement said. "This step will ensure that the U.S. banking system continues to perform its vital roles of protecting deposits and providing access to credit to households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth." Biden delivered his Monday remarks in a short briefing before traveling to California, where he is set to announce the sale of nuclear submarines to Australia. https://dailycaller.com/2023/03/13/biden-desantis-florida-transgender-kids-sinful-national-law/ ‘Close To Sinful’: Biden Floats Possibility Of Nation-Wide Transgender Law President Joe Biden appeared to criticize Ron DeSantis on his handling of transgender youth and floated the possibility of a nation-wide transgender law in an interview clip released Monday. “What’s going on in Florida, is as my mother would say, ‘close to sinful.’ I mean, it’s just terrible what they’re doing,” Biden said while speaking with actor Kal Penn. Kal Penn previews interview with Biden, discusses guest-hosting "The Daily Show"-Play 2:12-2:56 DeSantis has led an administration-wide effort to ban sex change treatments for minors. He has said doctors should be sued for performing sex changes on children and suspended a state attorney refusing to adhere to the child sex change ban. DeSantis also requested public universities report how many students they treated for “gender dysphoria,” and in October, the Florida Board of Medicine voted to ban sex change surgeries and hormone therapy for children under 18. Dylan Mulvaney, a man who identifies as a woman and has garnered attention on social media for using hyper-feminine stereotypes, asked Biden in October if he thinks states should “have the right” to ban “gender-affirming health care.” “I don’t think any state or anybody should have the right to do that, as a moral question and a legal question,” Biden responded. “I just think it’s wrong,” Biden added. “I feel very, very strongly that you should have every single solitary right, including, including use of your gender identity bathroom in public.” https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/videos/women-now-binge-drinking-more-than-men-for-first-time-in-history-doctor-warns Women now binge drinking more than men for first time in history, doctor warns For the first time in history, women are outpacing men in binge drinking, which is a growing concern among health officials as overall drinking for young adults is on the rise. As the pandemic came to an end, they seem to be drinking more than ever. In 2020, during the pandemic, we saw a continuing decline in binge drinking among college-age students. Most were isolated or at home as classes moved online. Group activities or parties where drinking would be prevalent simply were not happening. “In 2021, there has been an uptick, particularly among women. Now it turns out on college campuses women are actually binge drinking more than men, for the first time in history,” said Dr. George F. Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Koob said while drinking overall was down during the pandemic, deaths associated with alcohol were up 25% for not just college students but the general population. Koob believes isolation contributed to mental health problems and substance abuse across the board. However, now we’re back. People are going to parties, and colleges and bars are open again. Restaurants are serving bottomless brunch, and wineries and breweries are ready to pour. “It’s what we call the alcohol deprivation effect. People tend to really rebound in drinking after a period of not drinking.” Koob said. “We are a little concerned that this spring and spring break is going to be a return to a good amount of binge drinking. I just want to caution everyone that when you start hitting the binge drinking level you start doing really bad things to your body.” So, where does this leave this new group of women who are binge drinking more than ever before? Koob said knowing what a standard drink is and your limit is important to taking care of your health. As social media trends encourage dangerous “hacks” to binge drinking, including the viral “BORGs” or “blackout rage gallons” which combine water, electrolytes, and vodka, TikTok is specifically pushing the misconception that this drink will keep you hydrated while drinking copious amounts of liquor. https://nypost.com/2023/03/12/fight-among-200-brawlers-at-louisiana-hs-ends-in-10-arrests/ Massive fight among 200 students, parents at Louisiana high school ends in 10 arrests An explosive fight at a Louisiana high school among nearly 200 students and parents ended with several cops injured and at least 10 arrests. Swarms of police officers responded early March 8 to a “major campus disturbance” at East Baton Rouge Readiness Alternative School, finding a loaded gun abandoned on the ground, WBRZ reported. Officials say one fight broke out and escalated, spilling out into the school’s courtyard and gym. By the time police arrived, there were about 200 people involved in brawls across the campus. Videos of the chaos taken inside the school’s gym show chairs getting tossed and students being detained by law enforcement. One shocking video shows a sheriff’s deputy forcefully hitting a student’s face into a brick wall. The officer was trying to arrest a 17-year-old student, authorities said. Police said the teen had punched the officer in the face and tried to bite him, which led to the aggressive encounter captured on video. The teen was among those charged with battery on an officer and resisting arrest. Officials have not yet determined what triggered the massive melee at the school, which enrolls students who’ve been previously suspended or expelled from other district schools. The NAACP released a statement Wednesday saying it was reviewing videos from the incident to decide if the aggressive police response captured on video was appropriate. The fight allegedly started with a small group of students but escalated into a larger clash involving parents and students fighting police as well. One witness told WBRZ the brawl erupted when a girl who wasn’t a student at the school and her mom showed up to fight another girl — and that it escalated from there. Students were allegedly locked inside the gym during the fight. One responding police officer sustained injuries including a broken hip and head lacerations. Also among those arrested were three students charged with battery on a police officer, a felony. Five other students were arrested for disturbing the peace, including an 18-year-old girl who was arrested on counts of unlawful disruption of the operation of a school and resisting arrest, and a 17-year-old girl hit with disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. All of those arrested were students between 15 and 18. None of the parents or other adults at the scene were taken into custody. We're not afraid to tackle any topic on this podcast, and this week that topic is drag. It's a new year, but right-wing extremists keep reading from the same old playbook, trying to find boogeymen to scare us… especially suburban women. Armed right-wing extremists have been showing up to protest drag storytime events, which seems far more traumatizing for a child than a princess reading them a book could ever be. So much for the party of personal choice. The hosts are joined by Cress Barnes, a mom in North Carolina who's had to deal with threats and calls to shut down her restaurant because she hosts family-friendly drag events. Cress talks about why it's important to provide inclusive spaces, some misconceptions about drag, and how she always tries to lead with kindness. When she threw a "not a protest" party to celebrate diversity in her town, hundreds of people showed up to support her and the LGBTQ community... and the right-wing extremists were nowhere to be found. Then Jasmine interviews Tara Hoot, a drag queen who regularly hosts storytime events for kids. Tara is a teacher and a parent, so events that bring joy to kids and parents alike has always been a passion. They discuss what exactly drag is, why drag events have become such a popular target, and why it's so important for kids to see themselves and their experiences reflected in the books they read and the events they attend. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to not-so-expensive eggs, favorite flowers, and moms standing up for inclusive playgrounds in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”First Ron DeSantis passed "Don't Say Gay." Then he banned discussions about racism with the "Stop Woke Act." Now he's banned AP African American History in the state of Florida. This month, the Florida Board of Medicine voted to ban gender-affirming care for many transgender youth. The ban prevents minors who were not already receiving care from beginning treatment such as hormones or puberty blockers. It's the first such rule from a state medical board, but it may not be the last. The rule flies in the face of scientifically-backed guidelines established over years by The World Professional Association for Transgender Health and recommendations from accredited medical groups such as the American Medical Association. Physicians who study or provide gender-affirming healthcare have noted the ban is based on flawed research and misinterpretation, and influenced by disinformation narratives pushed by the right-wing. And this disinformation has seeped into all facets of the public discourse about transgender care and identity. We speak with Dr. Meredithe McNamara, an adolescent medicine physician and assistant professor of pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine, who testified against the Florida ban at a recent public meeting; and Alberto Cairo, the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami in Florida, and whose son has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
