Tónlist úr þættinum: Ólöf Arnalds - Bright and still. Marten, Billie - I Can't Get My Head Around You. Labi Siffre - The Vulture

Labour's threat to the ancient right of Trial by JuryNick Cohen and Francis FitzGibbon KC - a prominent barrister and former chair of the Criminal Bar Association - discuss the proposal by Labour politicians, including Sir Keir Starmer and David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, to restrict the right to trial by jury, which Nick finds astonishing given Starmer's previous advocacy for human rights and anti-racism. Francis argues against the proposed changes, which Nck thinks could expose ethnic minority defendants to unchecked racism. Francis argues that once the politicians have removed the right to trial by jury - it will be gone for ever.Throwing out the baby with the bathwater! Attacking jury trials to deal with deepening courts crisisThe discussion focuses on the legal system's backlog crisis, with Francis describing it as a disaster with 80,000 cases and delays extending to 2030. Nick and Francis discuss the report by former Appeal Court judge Sir Brian Leveson which Francis criticises for recommending strict curtailment of jury trials, a proposal he viewed as unnecessary and ineffective. Nick raises concerns about the independence of judges reviewing jury trials, suggesting that judges might be inclined to support removing juries from complex cases. Francis argues that judges are no better than juries in investigating human behaviour and coming to the right verdict.Juries, Francis FiztGibbon KCargues, are not just vital for the administration of justice - they give ordinary members of the public a stake in the system of rules and laws by which they are governed.Read all about it! Francis FitzGibbon KC was chair of the Criminal Bar Association (2016-2017) and has a wide-ranging and diverse trial practice covering all types of serious crime (prosecuting and defending). High profile cases include R. v Marten (gross-negligence manslaughter of a baby), R. Mohammadi (the Colindale allotment murder) and R v Alemi (fraud by successfully working as a psychiatrist with forged educational certificates). Francis has been recognised as a leading barrister in Crime for many years (Tier 2 Silk), and is ranked in the Legal 500, as ‘a highly intelligent Silk'. Her work celebrates the the rich tapestry of African American culture through the exploration of prints, patterns, and symbols. By incorporating these elements, she aims to create pieces that resonate deeply with the African American community and offer a connection to our ancestral heritage. “While we may never fully comprehend the lives of our ancestors, we carry their legacy within us through art, fashion, music and storytelling.” Her art serves as a visual expression of this enduring connection. The professional setting introduced me to a wide range of technical skills, from hand-lettering to woodworking, but it was also a world that penalized asking too many questions. My professional practice now reacquaints myself with permission to generate inquiry rather than sell something. As an avid daydreamer, my work tends to examine the boundary between memory, fantasy, and reality. I've been described as a “playful” creator, but we all learn early in life that play is the only way to grow. Are we not playing our way through new experiences even in adulthood? I want to reconcile fantasy with everyday. I want to remind adults that we're in charge of allowing ourselves surprise and delight. The gallery door opens to all, from casual visitors to avid collectors. A visit to our gallery is an experience of exploration and discovery, free of pretentiousness, pressure, or gatekeeping. Our Artistic Mission The Smalter Gallery aims to create a space in which our artists feel guided, valued, and cared for. We are a second home for both emerging and experienced artists, driven by a desire to support creators so they may realize their greatest artistic ambitions. Never imposing ourselves upon an artist's creative vision, we will act as a safe and ever-present foundation upon which artists of all backgrounds can evolve and thrive. Simply put: The Smalter Gallery nurtures creativity and trusts artists. The Smalter Gallery 1802 W. 39th St., 816-200-2554, smalterart.com Currently on exhibit; Vespera - A Solo Exhibition by Brittany Noriega The Smalter Gallery is located at 1802 West 39th Street Kansas City, MO, 64111. From the artist: Vespera means “evening star” or “of the evening.” It is a threshold; when day exhales into night, shadows stretch long, and the air grows heavy with quiet. Resilience here isn't loud; it is patient, watchful, and steady. For the past two years I've been studying thresholds, in my artwork, in my research, and my own life. What does it mean to step into darkness prepared instead of afraid? The drawings that emerged became guardians: figures that endure, quietly holding space. We all pass through seasons of transition, grief, and change. These moments aren't ornamental; they are essential. Vespera reminds us that resilience often hums low in the marrow, where endings fold into beginnings, asking us simply to notice, to wait, to watch. The opening reception, including an opportunity to meet the artist, will be held at Smalter Gallery on November 7th from 5pm - 8pm. Lee Smalter, who grew up in Connecticut, felt compelled to own and operate an art gallery. She answered an advertisement for a space in Kansas City's West 39th Street neighborhood next to Prospero's Books. Extensive renovation in 2018-2019 led to the gallery's debut before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite citywide uncertainty and isolation at the time, the public embraced Smalter's gallery, situated in the dense residential and small business community. Since inception, the gallery has served as a space dedicated to displaying work by emerging and established artists. By design, Smalter established a space that's non-elitist and inviting for both artists and the public, especially passersby who may not be avid arts patrons. In the third grade, students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. But there's a problem in Delaware.Gov. Matt Meyer declared a literacy emergency earlier this year after eighth grade reading scores showed Delaware students saw their lowest scores in almost three decades.Statewide assessments in earlier grades tell a similar story, with proficiency rates at a standstill.Delaware's Secretary of Education Cindy Marten says literacy makes a world of a difference for students' life outcomes, and that's why she and Gov. Meyer put together their Early Literacy Plan.Delaware Public Media's Abigail Lee sat down with Marten to talk about the plan.
"I get a physical tingling sensation. It's beyond my control, an impulsive feeling where I have to sit and wait for it," Billie Marten says about that moment before a wave of inspiration strikes. The problem, Marten told me, is that it's been a while since she's written anything. But as we soon realized, Marten has been writing a lot: she pulled out her Notes app and scrolled through all the freewriting and thoughts she's written over the past year. "Look at this," she says. "I haven't written anything, but I've written something every day." Good writers know that pen to paper is only a small part of the writing process. And as you'll hear, when Marten writes songs, she loves to write diagonally.Billie Marten's latest album is called Dog Eared.

We rarely hear about Marten Micron, a young Dutch pastor who came to London as a refugee, and helped organise one of the most radical experiments of Edward VI's reign: the Stranger Church at Austin Friars. I'm historian and author Claire Ridgway, and in today's video I'll be sharing the remarkable story of Marten Micron: his ministry among London's refugees, his influential writings on church order and catechism, his exile under Mary I, and his enduring legacy in the Reformation. In this episode: - Who Marten Micron was and how he came to London. - Why the Stranger Churches were so significant in Edward VI's England. - Micron's role in shaping worship, discipline, and teaching. - His exile, death, and why his writings still mattered across Europe. Join me as we uncover the story of a reformer too often forgotten, yet whose influence rippled far beyond Tudor England. What do you think—should Marten Micron be remembered alongside figures like Cranmer and Calvin? Tell me in the comments! Like, subscribe, and tap the bell so you don't miss more daily deep dives into Tudor and Reformation history. In the second episode from race week in Nice, host Matt Lieto connects with another trio of top contenders for the IRONMAN World Championship title: Sam Laidlow, Marten van Riel, and Matthew Matthew MarquardtFirst, defending Nice champion Sam Laidlow reflects on a challenging year that started with a reactivation of the Epstein-Barr virus. He explains how the forced rest shifted his perspective from chasing numbers to focusing on quality, health, and a more holistic preparation. This new approach led to breakthrough performances on surprisingly low training volume, giving him a newfound "inner peace and confidence" as he looks to defend his title on French soil.Next, Marten van Riel opens up about his turbulent and "panicky" build-up to his first full-distance World Championship, which included a significant ankle injury that limited him to a four-week run block and a minor crash on the course just days before the race. Despite the setbacks, the Belgian Olympian discusses the freedom that comes from lowered expectations and his excitement to race on a course he feels is perfectly suited to his strengths. Finally, American Matthew Marquardt details his season of two halves, from frustrating early-season results to dominant victories at IRONMAN Cairns and Lake Placid. The medical student gives a fascinating deep-dive into the physiological cause of the quad spasms that have affected him in T1 and explains the strategic evolution in his racing—learning to conserve energy on the bike to unleash his now formidable run, which he believes is the key to competing with the best in the world.

This week, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were found GUILTY of gross negligence manslaughter. So, on top of our rereleased episode from last year, here is everything you need to know from the bizarre retrial: unbelievable revelations about Mark Gordon's past crimes, an answer on Constance's mysterious 'fall' from a balcony, and more delays and fired barristers than we ever thought possible.--When the body of a weeks-old baby was found in a plastic bag in a shed, covered in soil and rubbish, it marked the end of one of the UK's strangest and most tragic criminal manhunts. The baby's parents were Constance Marten and Mark Gordon – an aristocratic heiress and an American convicted rapist. As a jury wrestled for months over the couple's guilt, more and more shocking details came out. Details of nights spent in a cheap tent out on the freezing moors. Of Gordon's brutal criminal history. And the heartbreaking image that stuck in the nation's mind more than anything else: the accusation that the baby had spent its short life carried around, in the depths of winter, in nothing but a plastic shopping bag.Exclusive bonus content:Wondery - Ad-free & ShortHandPatreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesFollow us on social media:YouTubeTikTokInstagramXVisit our website:WebsiteSources available on redhandedpodcast.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Happy solstice, listeners! Join our guest host this week, Sapphire Sandalo, for a summertime tale of betrayal, murder, and the bizarre journey of a criminal corpse. It's 1827, and the Marten family hasn't seen 25-year-old Maria in five months, ever since she left home with plans to elope with William Corder. Whenever they ask about her, William always has an explanation for why she hasn't visited or written a letter. So, they haven't worried too much.Until now. Maria's stepmother, Ann, is haunted by troubling nightmares in which Maria isn't living out her “happily ever after” at all. In fact, if Ann's visions are correct, Maria is dead…and she's buried down the road, in their village's Red Barn.
