Text us here! Hershall, I decided to try typing you name while leaning to the right (or write to the right). How does it look? Oh, back to what I am supposed to be typing.... We had a decently, slightly above average day here. I am not saying it isn't worth listening to but I am saying refer to the title and you can likely hear some angst (big word for anxiety) in my voice. This is truly happening and Deacon Dustin admits it in a roundabout way. We had a segment where we included taglines for Pod'N Me and it came out then.... We also talked about the wedding of Gen Z boy and the help that. he received while he was absent on his honeymoon from some friends... decor was delightful at his abode (big word for house). We also had Brooks tell us about quantitative easing... that was historical. There were other things that were talked about so... Enjoy, if possible! Our culture at Chestnut Mountain Church is always going to be shaped by what we value. The early church in Acts had all things in common; they were together. They were open-handed with what God had entrusted to them and lived out grateful generosity. We should strive to be a generous people, not for recognition, but because we are grateful for how generous He has been to us. As we look at why we value grateful generosity, there are three steps we can take in being generous. The first step in generosity is taking a step toward God. He receives us no matter what condition we're in. Before we can ever understand biblical generosity, we must take a step toward Him in surrender. God was the one who initiated generosity, the one who modeled it. Before we trust Him with our money, we must trust Him with our eternity. The next step is to know Him better, and the deeper we know Him, the deeper we understand how generous He has been. The third step is to trust Him, because generosity has nothing to do with the amount of money; it has everything to do with trust. God doesn't need our money; He wants our hearts. When we live out generosity, we're living out a reflection of who Jesus is. The goal is not for people to see Chestnut Mountain Church; it's for people to see Jesus. The federal government partially shut down for the first time since 2018. The shutdown puts the D.C. region in a particularly perilous position, considering the area's close relationship with the federal government. Additionally, President Trump is again threatening to fire more civil servants and further slash federal programs. Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey joined the show to discuss how the shutdown will affect area residents. Plus, he explained why Democrats are holding out for a permanent extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits and why this poses a significant concern for many residents living in Prince George's County.More than 60,000 Loudoun County residents have jobs tied to the federal government, according to a county estimate. We spoke with Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall about what a federal shutdown means for her residents. Plus, the U.S. Department of Education is alleging Loudoun County Public Schools violated Title IX when the school system suspended two male students earlier this year. We asked Chair Randall what it might mean for the schools' ability to receive federal funding, and we discussed what's next in the fight over data centers.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Despite his failures, including striking the rock at Meribah (Numbers 20), Moses pressed on to fulfill his purpose. One of his final tasks was completing Joshua's training and commissioning him to lead Israel into the promised land. Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance." Bath bun. Bobbinet. Poor basket. Vanity-bait. These are just a few of the words the Oxford English Dictionary credits Jane Austen with using for the first time in print—and almost all are words related to domestic and everyday life. In this episode, we sit down with scholar Charlotte Brewer to explore the Dictionary's 19th-century origins, its reliance on volunteer readers, its ongoing digital evolution, and the literary biases that shaped whose words were recorded. A must-listen for word nerds! Charlotte Brewer is Emerita Fellow in English at Hertford College, Oxford. She began her career as a medievalist, subsequently turning to the history of the English language and in particular its record in the Oxford English Dictionary. Her publications include studies of Jane Austen and Shakespeare in the OED, and she is currently working on the Murray Scriptorium, a co-edited edition of the letters of James Murray, the first chief editor of the OED.For a transcript and show notes, visit https://jasna.org/austen/podcast/ep28/.*********Visit our website: www.jasna.orgFollow us on Instagram and FacebookSubscribe to the podcast on our YouTube channelEmail: podcast@jasna.org

Send us a textPeter & John: Faithful to the EndJesus called Peter and John away from their work as fishermen to follow Him and become "fishers of men" (Matthew 4.18-22). Though we don't know their exact ages when called, Christ's call on their lives was a lifelong commitment.Peter's JourneyFrom his brash early days to his denial of Christ, Peter was transformed by the resurrection and Pentecost into a bold leader of the early church. Even when he faltered years later in Antioch (Galatians 2.11-14), he accepted correction and continued serving faithfully. In his second letter, written shortly before his death, Peter exhorts believers: "Be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3.17-18)John;s LegacyJohn, once known as a "Son of Thunder," became known as the apostle of love. In his final 15-20 years (AD 80-98), he wrote five New Testament books:The Gospel According to John (AD 80) First, Second and Third John (AD 90-95) The Book of Revelation (AD 94-98)His most productive literary ministry came in his elderly years, showing how God can use us powerfully in every season of life.God's call on our lives, whenever we first said "Yes" to following Him, is to be faithful till the end. The idea of "Retirement" is not an option for us as Christians. We are shaped by surrendered obedience. The narrow gate Jesus calls us to enter is simple, but it is not easy. Following Him means making choices that set us apart from the broad road of the crowd. Trusting the Lord means doing what He asks even when it doesn't make sense. God doesn't need logical people; He needs obedient people. Surrendered obedience is seen in the prayers we pray, when we say, “Your will be done, not mine.” Take a step of obedience. Don't hang the “do not disturb” sign on your faith—switch it to “available.” We are shaped by the paths we take, the choices we make, and the prayers we pray. Take a step towards obedience. Plus, we asked Reid about turning down the temperature on political rhetoric.Protests earlier this month prompted Prince George's County leaders to pause all data center development, with a promise to assess the impacts and gather more input from residents. The move comes four years after the Prince George's County Council voted unanimously to allow data centers to be built 'by right,' meaning for most sites, developers wouldn't need council approval. Now, leaders are reconsidering that process. We asked Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher for her thoughts. Prayer is the life source of the believer. We have overcomplicated it, but prayer is simply a conversation with God. The beauty of saying “Good morning, God” is that He is never not there. Prayer is where we find peace, comfort, direction, and the wisdom of God. It is not the preparation for the greater work but is the greater work. Everything must begin in prayer. Jesus gave us the model, the outline, and the call to keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking. Prayer is not a “ding dong ditch” moment—it is persistence. Like the widow before the judge, we are called to keep showing up and to depend on the One who loves us. Hardship often drives us to prayer, but once we taste and see that the Lord is good, we realize we can't live without Him. Persistent prayer is our display of dependency and expectancy. God's ways are always better, His timing is always best, and He calls us to trust Him more. Today, Brenda sits down with Cicely Corry to explore why Gen Z is showing a greater spiritual openness than previous generations, even as women are leaving the church at higher rates than men for the first time in decades. They delve into the cultural forces and personal experiences fueling this change and offer practical ways that churches can create a more inviting space for women who may be spiritually seeking but wary of organized religion. Cicely Corry serves as the Editorial Director at Barna Group, where she oversees the creation of research-driven resources that help church leaders understand cultural and spiritual trends. Cicely brings years of experience in publishing and communications, equipping leaders to engage the next generation with clarity and compassion. Find out more about her work at www.cicelycorry.com. We pray that this conversation encourages you to continue to lead with humility and transparency by the filling and empowerment of the Spirit.----When She Leads is a podcast for women in ministry hosted by Brenda Leavenworth, Krista Fox, Rosemary Cady, and Kelly Bell.Email us at info@whensheleads.orgFollow us on Instagram at @whensheleads

Send us a textJehoiada & Jehoshabeath: Faithful to the EndThe story of Jehoiada ("Joe") and Jehoshabeath ("Beth") demonstrates how elderly believers can have tremendous impact even in their final decades.Age 83When evil Queen Athaliah destroyed the royal offspring to take the throne, "Joe" (about 83 years old) and "Beth" (around 80) rescued little Joash and hid him in the house of God.Age 90After protecting Joash for 7 years, "Joe" orchestrated his coronation as king at age 7, confronted the wicked queen Athaliah, and helped restore proper worship.Age 90-130For the next 40 years, "Joe" served as a mentor and spiritual guide to King Joash, helping him reign righteously.Age 130"Joe" died at the remarkable age of 130, having served God faithfully for 47 years from age 83-130.Tragically, after Jehoiada's death, Joash turned away from God and even had Jehoiada's son Zechariah executed when he prophesied against the king's unfaithfulness. This reminds us that while we can have tremendous influence, each person must ultimately make their own choices before God.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Biblical teaching is the nucleus of everything we do. It is our life source, and it's what God has entrusted to us as His church. When looking at why we value biblical teaching, we look at what we do, which is to preach the Word. Not part of it, but every God-breathed word in Scripture. The reason we preach the Word is that it teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains. It may offend our flesh, but that offense leads to brokenness over sin, and that brokenness turns us back to Him. When we preach the Word, when we live a life with the purpose of glorifying Him, the world hates us. The enemy wants to extinguish the very light that God has placed inside of you. We have to keep preaching the Word, keep living the Word, and keep sharing the Word no matter what the cost. Fairfax voters this week overwhelmingly elected Democrat James Walkinshaw to succeed the late Gerry Connolly in Congress in Virginia's 11th district. Walkinshaw, who was sworn in on Wednesday, takes over for his mentor during a particularly tumultuous time for Northern Virginia. Congressman Walkinshaw joined the show to discuss the 51,000 civilian federal workers who live in the district, a potential regional recession, and the possibility of a federal shutdown. Plus, we asked him to weigh in on Virginia's upcoming statewide elections. The House Oversight Committee advanced a series of bills this week that threaten to further undermine D.C.'s autonomy, including legislation replacing the locally elected D.C. attorney general with a presidential appointee, allowing youth 14 years or older to be tried for certain offenses, and ending cashless bail in the District. Introduced amendments also called for revoking the city's ban on right turns on red and prohibiting automatic traffic enforcement cameras. Also, this week, the federal takeover of D.C. police expired. Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen took the mic to discuss what comes next and why he believes the legislation would make the District less safe. We'll also asked about the upcoming second RFK stadium vote.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Text us here! Hershall, we managed to pack 63 minutes of time into 3 minutes of content... so that should give you a clue on what you are about to experience. By the title you should be able to ascertain (big word for find out with certainty) that Brooks is on another offensive kick. Also, by the title you can catch the drift that some unnamed soul (the servant who typeth these descriptions) is struggling with hearing still and it is worse than before. In the midst of it all we talked about: visiting elders, church tissue game, areadin' and acryin', Deacon Shamah the Baptist Dustin, saved sanctified & optimized, and an unnamed singing super star... Text us here! Hershall, we ended with a tough conversation about waiting on God. It was a needful talk... Before we got there, we heard some good OLD songs and relived the past in a song. We had some feedback about whether or not we should pray over our pets and Deacon Dustin quoted another song wrong and Brooks pounced on that mistake faster than Trump with a Tariff (that was for all the people who faithfully read these descriptions and got jolted by my overtly political reference)(Just making sure you're still awake and still reading these valuable episode descriptions cause I have written a many of them now...) We also heard an elk hunting story and Brooks got some valuable marriage advice... Enjoy!
