Text us here! Hershall, I feel like I need to warn about this but I would like for you to listen. We talked about a trophy that was left in the studio and it spawned a conversation about one of my trophies that I won back in the day. I am fairly famous for something very moooving... We discussed the irrelevance of phone books and got some utterly ridiculously hilarious feedback. Brooks is a descendant of Maw Maw Pocahontas. There were gambling accusations and even an argument about song lyrics. If you wonder how all these things don't tie together, listen and find that they do! Enjoy, if possible... A parent will do anything to protect their child. Warnings come from love, not fear, because love sees danger and wants to keep others safe. In the same way, Jude gives a loving but serious warning to the church to be alert to the dangers that surround us. In Jude 12-23, he describes “these people” who slip into the church to cause division and spread deception. If the enemy cannot stop the church from the outside, he will try to weaken it from within. We must guard what God is doing in our homes, our children's lives, and His church. Jude reminds believers that God will deal with all wickedness in His time. Our responsibility is to stay faithful, to keep growing in our faith, to pray for the power of the Holy Spirit, and to have mercy on those who have drifted. We have to be urgent about reaching people who do not know God, snatching them from the flames but using caution. Be careful not to be pulled into what you are trying to rescue someone from. Know your surroundings, know what you are stepping into, and ask God to reveal who these people are in your life. Montgomery County is home to more than 50,000 federal workers and numerous federal agencies, so residents are feeling the impact of the weeks-long shutdown. Plus, the possibility remains for tens of thousands of federal employees to be fired as the shutdown continues. Local officials are sounding the alarm on rising rates of homelessness and longer lines at food banks. Council President Kate Stewart joined the show to discuss how the county is managing the crisis. She also weighed in on the Council's upheaval and Maryland lawmakers considering calling a special session of the General Assembly to redraw the state's congressional districts. This follows Republican-led redistricting efforts around the country, triggering similar efforts by Democrats, including in Virginia. Stewart said redistricting could flip Maryland's lone Republican seat in Congress. It's currently held by the leader of the House Freedom Caucus, Andy Harris. “We do need to get rid of Andy Harris. As someone who lives in the state of Maryland," she said. "Quite frankly, he does not represent the values of Maryland, and we need somebody else.”The D.C. Council voted this week to roll back tenant rights for some renters in the city. Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau got behind the mic to explain why she thinks this was a bad idea. Plus, we ask Nadeau about her decision not to run for reelection and her "bottle bill."The measure, introduced earlier this year, would add a ten-cent deposit to the price of most beverage containers while creating a system for people to get the deposit back when they return the empty bottles. Nadeau said fees from the big beverage companies would fund the system."It's all about getting litter up, and everybody hates litter. You know, this is the most effective way to cut litter off our streets, off our out of our parks, out of our rivers," she said.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

(and we may have had both today) The giggles came often and the kick came by a listener who reminded Bro. Brad, our beloved song leader about his "Biden-like memory." He and Deacon Dustin both seemed a bit nervous when this exchange took place. Before then, Dustin told of a recent hunting experience with his son that made us all laugh (those that were paying attention). We told of recent chili cook-off that Bro. Brad took home a first place win from. We also talked about many other relevant topics... ending with a discussion on the second coming of Christ, so, Enjoy! 2 Kings 21 Summary2 Kings 21 recounts the reigns of Manasseh and Amon, kings of Judah.Manasseh:Manasseh becomes king at age 12 and rules for 55 years in Jerusalem. Unlike his father Hezekiah, Manasseh does evil in God's sight—he rebuilds pagan altars, worships idols, and even puts idol altars in the temple. He leads Judah astray, practicing sorcery and shedding much innocent blood. God declares through prophets that, because of Manasseh's sins, terrible judgment will come upon Jerusalem and Judah; they will be wiped out like a dish turned upside down.Amon:After Manasseh dies, his son Amon becomes king. He rules for two years, also doing evil and worshiping idols like his father. He is assassinated by his own officials, and then the people kill those assassins and make Amon's son Josiah king. Thus, this chapter marks a period of great evil in Judah, setting the stage for coming judgment.Your words were found and I ate them
To contend for the faith is to wrestle and endure in the daily walk of following Jesus. Jude reminds us that we must look to the past to understand how to stand firm today. From Israel's rebellion in the wilderness to the examples of Cain, Balaam, and Korah, Scripture shows us the danger of turning from God's truth and the importance of staying faithful to the calling He has given us. Contending for the faith requires endurance and focus. We run the race by looking to Jesus, the perfecter of our faith, knowing that He has already won the victory. As we follow Him, we are called to soak in God's Word, beg for His will, and walk in His way, allowing what we believe to be visible in how we live. In a world filled with confusion and darkness, God calls His people to wake up, push back the darkness, and shine the light of Christ wherever they go.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/Spa3WGxQ32cSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast, leave a review, and let us know what you think.

U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) joined the show to discuss the federal shutdown, as it drags on with no apparent end in sight. The Trump administration is continuing to lay off federal employees, while threatening to terminate thousands more. Maryland's and Virginia's congressional delegations gathered together this week to urge the White House to stop the federal cuts and end the government shutdown.Democrats are holding out for a spending bill that includes a permanent extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. As Americans begin shopping for health care coverage, Sen. Alsobrooks said time is running out for Congress to extend health care tax credits.People can sign up for 2026 coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace starting November 1st. Sen Alsobrook said that's why Democrats won't pass a spending bill now and negotiate healthcare later, as Republicans want."We do not have time because those escalating costs are taking place beginning now. People are beginning to see the increase in their premiums," she said. "Many people will be getting notices about the escalating increases that will happen next year. So, those affordable care tax credits happen now."She said premiums will nearly double for millions of Americans, and four million will lose healthcare entirely without an extension of healthcare tax credits.Continued federal cuts have already put the region on edge. A prolonged federal shutdown has many worried that a regional economic slowdown —or even a recession —may be on the horizon. Clark Mercer, who leads the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, discusses how the shutdown is straining the local economy and budgets. While Mercer noted some bright spots, he said the region is facing strong economic headwinds."This does not take an economist when the biggest company in town starts cutting tens, if not hundreds of thousands of jobs and contractors, it's gonna have a ripple effect on the economies where that company sits," he said.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

As a sign, the shadow on the sundial miraculously moves backward. After Hezekiah recovers, envoys from Babylon visit, and Hezekiah shows them all his treasures and resources. Isaiah warns Hezekiah that because he did this, a future generation of his descendants will be taken away as captives to Babylon and everything in his palace will eventually be carried off.The chapter ends by noting Hezekiah's accomplishments and his death. 2 Kings 19 SummaryIn 2 Kings 19, King Hezekiah responds to the threats from the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. Distressed by the enemy's blasphemous messages, Hezekiah seeks advice from the prophet Isaiah, asking for God's help. Isaiah assures Hezekiah that God will defend Judah and that Sennacherib will not succeed.Sennacherib sends another threatening letter, so Hezekiah goes to the temple and prays for deliverance, acknowledging God's power and asking Him to save Jerusalem so that all nations will know He is the true God.God answers through Isaiah, declaring that He has heard Hezekiah's prayer and will protect Jerusalem. Isaiah prophesies that Sennacherib will return to his country and die by the sword. That night, an angel kills 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, forcing Sennacherib to retreat to Nineveh. Later, Sennacherib is killed by his own sons, fulfilling God's prophecy. Through these events, God demonstrates His power and sovereignty, delivering Judah from destruction.Your words were found and I ate them

Hezekiah prayed desperately, and God responded by giving him 15 more years of life. When envoys from Babylon came to visit him after his recovery, Hezekiah showed off all his treasures rather than testifying to God's faithfulness. Isaiah prophesied that all these treasures would one day be carried off to Babylon.Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit he received, because his heart was proud; therefore wrath came on him and Judah and Jerusalem. (2 Chronicles 32.25)What would we do with 15 years if God added them to our lives? Would we live them for ourselves or would we live those extra years for God? Hezekiah's son Manasseh was born during these extra 15 years, yet grew up to be one of Judah's most wicked kings. This suggests that Hezekiah failed to invest spiritually in his son during his extended years.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Jude opens his letter reminding believers who they are, called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ. We have been bought with a price, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. It does not matter how far you have gone or how much you have messed up. Jesus has called you to Himself. His love is perfect, permanent, and unchanging. Once you are in Him, you are always in Him. Because of that, we are not saved to sit still. Jude urges believers to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. In a world where truth is being twisted and false gospels creep in unnoticed, we must guard what is true, not opinions or preferences, but the gospel itself. Contending begins on our knees. It looks like prayer, surrender, and bold obedience. Jesus has called us, loves us, and keeps us. He does not need wimpy Christians, but bold ones, driven by His love, who stand firm and live out the truth of the gospel. You are called. You are beloved. You are kept. Now get in the game and contend for the faith.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/ZuisIyghRHgSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast, leave a review, and let us know what you think.

"For those who have made their minds up, their minds probably didn't change."Plus, violent text messages sent by the Democratic candidate for Attorney General in 2022 continue to shake up Virginia's statewide elections. Text us here! Hershall, I decided to try typing you name while leaning to the right (or write to the right). How does it look? Oh, back to what I am supposed to be typing.... We had a decently, slightly above average day here. I am not saying it isn't worth listening to but I am saying refer to the title and you can likely hear some angst (big word for anxiety) in my voice. This is truly happening and Deacon Dustin admits it in a roundabout way. We had a segment where we included taglines for Pod'N Me and it came out then.... We also talked about the wedding of Gen Z boy and the help that. he received while he was absent on his honeymoon from some friends... decor was delightful at his abode (big word for house). We also had Brooks tell us about quantitative easing... that was historical. There were other things that were talked about so... Enjoy, if possible! Our culture at Chestnut Mountain Church is always going to be shaped by what we value. The early church in Acts had all things in common; they were together. They were open-handed with what God had entrusted to them and lived out grateful generosity. We should strive to be a generous people, not for recognition, but because we are grateful for how generous He has been to us. As we look at why we value grateful generosity, there are three steps we can take in being generous. The first step in generosity is taking a step toward God. He receives us no matter what condition we're in. Before we can ever understand biblical generosity, we must take a step toward Him in surrender. God was the one who initiated generosity, the one who modeled it. Before we trust Him with our money, we must trust Him with our eternity. The next step is to know Him better, and the deeper we know Him, the deeper we understand how generous He has been. The third step is to trust Him, because generosity has nothing to do with the amount of money; it has everything to do with trust. God doesn't need our money; He wants our hearts. When we live out generosity, we're living out a reflection of who Jesus is. The goal is not for people to see Chestnut Mountain Church; it's for people to see Jesus. Bath bun. Bobbinet. Poor basket. Vanity-bait. These are just a few of the words the Oxford English Dictionary credits Jane Austen with using for the first time in print—and almost all are words related to domestic and everyday life. In this episode, we sit down with scholar Charlotte Brewer to explore the Dictionary's 19th-century origins, its reliance on volunteer readers, its ongoing digital evolution, and the literary biases that shaped whose words were recorded. A must-listen for word nerds! Charlotte Brewer is Emerita Fellow in English at Hertford College, Oxford. She began her career as a medievalist, subsequently turning to the history of the English language and in particular its record in the Oxford English Dictionary. Her publications include studies of Jane Austen and Shakespeare in the OED, and she is currently working on the Murray Scriptorium, a co-edited edition of the letters of James Murray, the first chief editor of the OED.For a transcript and show notes, visit https://jasna.org/austen/podcast/ep28/.*********Visit our website: www.jasna.orgFollow us on Instagram and FacebookSubscribe to the podcast on our YouTube channelEmail: podcast@jasna.org

Text us here! Hershall, here we are again... We had a wonderful, but kind of long winded episode today. We talked about several things. The serious got real serious when we talked about how some people use God to validate themselves. We also heard a wonderful testimony from our Deacon, Dustin Wakley about a time in his life where he let his little light shine in front of dental college student. We also discussed getting a new logo. We also know what Kibosh means... we even had quite a bit to say about this day in history five years ago... Dustin and Brad made their debut on this show that day and the rest is history! Enjoy!
