Text us here! Hershall, This is probably the most risky episode we have ever recorded... There was a HUGE (big word) division that had the potential to completely destroy this entire organization. Yes, this unified, never controversial, organization that you have come to know and love called, Pod'N Me. Thankfully with the help of HR (little word for Human Resources), we were able to get things resolved and hopefully continue the show. I won't mention who the conflict was between here because I don't want you to loose confidence in people before you listen, but it was nothing short of amazing that we were able to work thru the differences. I tink you will be able to do the same thing, should you ever encounter a difficult problem with Brooks... er, someone, I mean. Enjoy! Text us here! Hersh, what a privilege to have you here.. if you still are after 6 years. Can you believe that we have been recording this show for 6 years. What a ton of fun we have had and we really did have a serious discussion about how to land the plane, so to speak. You will have to listen to see what we came up with. Some of the show ending discussions could have been due to the fact that our very own Deacon shared how a routine sales encounter led him to being essentially a TV star, you might say... talk about a whole nuther (big way of saying another) level of success. Send us Fan MailREPLAY OF THE FIRST FWM PODCASTIn this episode of the Finishing Well Podcast, Dr. Hal Habecker and Dr. Randy Hess revisit the very first episode of the show, originally recorded in December 2020. The episode opens with Dr. Habecker expressing his deep desire for older generations—parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents—to be active encouragers and mentors to younger generations. He emphasizes the importance of older adults pouring their wisdom, experiences, and love into their families and communities, highlighting the biblical value placed on elders. The hosts discuss the mission of Finishing Well Ministries, which is to inspire and equip believers of all ages, especially those in their later years, to live purposefully and finish their lives well in service to God. Dr. Habecker shares his personal journey from pastoring at Dallas Bible Church to founding the ministry, motivated by a passion to counter cultural and even church-based tendencies to marginalize older adults. He points out that, contrary to societal views that equate retirement with the end of productivity, Scripture consistently affirms the ongoing value and purpose of older people.Throughout the conversation, Dr. Habecker and Dr. Hess reflect on biblical examples of impactful aging, such as Moses, Joshua, and the apostle John, who accomplished significant work in their later years. They reference key scriptures like Ephesians 2:10 and Psalm 90:12, underscoring that God's purpose for each person does not diminish with age. Instead, the wisdom and experiences accumulated over a lifetime are meant to be shared, especially with younger generations, to build up the church and community.Dr. Hess shares his initial intrigue and eventual conviction about the ministry's vision, noting that many seniors wrestle with questions of purpose after retirement. He observes that while society often promotes leisure and self-indulgence as the goals of aging, true fulfillment comes from discovering and living out God's ongoing calling. The hosts encourage listeners to reflect on their own lives and consider how they can continue to serve, mentor, and make a difference, regardless of age.The episode concludes with a call to action for older adults to embrace their God-given roles as encouragers and mentors, and for all listeners to pursue a life of purpose and impact. The hosts invite feedback and continued engagement with the podcast, reinforcing the message that the later years can be the most fruitful and meaningful season of life when lived in alignment with God's purposes.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. In 1 John 5, John revisits familiar territory as he reminds believers why he wrote this letter: that our joy may be full, that we may not be deceived, and that we may know we have eternal life. Surrounded by false teachers and competing beliefs, John points us back to the truth that everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. John reminds us that loving God's children and obeying His commands is not a burden but a delight. As followers of Jesus, we are called to go to everyone, everywhere, every day with the Good News that whoever believes in Jesus can be born of God. Most importantly, John declares that everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. We were designed to overcome, not through our own strength, but through faith in Jesus Christ. The world can never satisfy the desires of our hearts, but Jesus can. Stay connected to the Source of life, trust in Him, and take what you know to be true and teach it to someone else.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/ejZAvEPNt-MSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_

Meet Angela Standridge, Director of the Texas Technology Access Program (TTAP) at the University of Texas. The program helps people with disabilities get access to assistive technology so they can live more independently. What is Assistive Technology (AT)? is any device, equipment, software program, or product that helps a person with a disability improve or maintain their ability to function.TTAP makes these tools easy to find and use. They not only have a library of available devices but also provide product demonstrations, 35-day loaner devices, recycled equipment, and information about national loan programs. Angela explains that the tool itself is not the full solution—the real solution is how the person uses it in their own environment to meet their specific needs. There are moments in life when we are gently—or sometimes not so gently—called back to ourselves. For many of us, that call comes through nature. This week, we're joined by Dr. Lindsay Branham, environmental psychologist, filmmaker, and author of Heartwood. After a successful career as a war journalist and documentary filmmaker working in some of the world's most challenging environments, Lindsay found herself facing a profound health crisis during the pandemic. What began as a search for physical healing became something much deeper: a relationship with the natural world that transformed her understanding of wellness, spirituality, and what it truly means to belong. In this deeply moving conversation, Lindsay shares how the forests became a teacher, guide, and healing companion during one of the most difficult seasons of her life. Together, we explore the idea that nature isn't just something we visit, it's something we can be in relationship with throughout our lives.WE EXPLOREHow chronic illness and uncertainty became an unexpected doorway to healingThe powerful idea that "the Earth is our first sacred text"What it means to be in relationship with trees, forests, and the living worldHow nature can help us reconnect with our intuition, spirit, and sense of belongingLindsay's spiritual journey—from childhood wonder to faith deconstruction and beyondThe concept of non-dual consciousness and why it changes how we view ourselves and the worldThe limitations of viewing healing through a purely physical lensWhy so many of us feel disconnected—and how nature offers a path back homePractical ways to begin listening more deeply to the natural world around youA FEW TAKEAWAYSHealing isn't always about fixing what's broken—it can be about learning how to be in relationship with what is.Nature has wisdom to offer if we're willing to slow down and listen. We are not separate from the Earth; we are part of it.Sometimes our greatest challenges become invitations into a deeper life. This conversation is a reminder that the answers we seek may not always come from doing more. John reminds us that God is love, and because He has loved us, we also ought to love one another. This is not a love based on feelings or emotions, but a self-sacrificing, servant-hearted love that we see most clearly in the person and work of Jesus. In this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Jesus showed us what perfect love looks like. He loved people nobody expected Him to love, loved people up close and personal, loved people others had written off, loved people who thought they were too sinful to be loved, and loved people who failed Him. Perfect love moves toward people, makes contact, pursues restoration, and refuses to give up on those who need grace. Because Christ first loved us, we now have the opportunity to love others the same way. The way we love one another is the most honest picture of how we love God. Perfect love is not something we earn; it is something we receive from Jesus and then extend to others.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/puyC2NsIeqkSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_
Why do people who ignore God often seem to prosper while those who seek to follow Him struggle? In Episode 80 of the Wisdom Calling Podcast, we begin a new section in our chronological journey through Scripture by exploring Psalm 73, a powerful song written by Asaph, the leader of King David's royal choir. Wrestling with envy, comparison, and the apparent success of the wicked, Asaph confronts a question that still challenges us today: Is faithfulness to God really worth it?Everything changes when he enters God's presence.Join us as we discover how God's perspective transforms our understanding of success, prosperity, and contentment. We'll explore why perception isn't always reality, how comparison can quietly steal our joy, and why true wisdom begins with seeing life through God's eyes.In this episode, you'll learn:• Why envy and comparison are so spiritually destructive• How God's presence reshapes our perspective• The difference between appearance and reality• Practical ways to cultivate discernment and contentment• Why God Himself is our greatest treasureKey Passage: Psalm 73Wisdom Calling is a podcast designed to help Christian professionals cultivate wisdom in their lives and work by thinking more critically and living more strategically through the lens of God's Word. You can order the devotionals at https://amzn.to/4h8zFe6 or https://wisdomcalling.orgFollow us on Instagram: @wisdomcallingnow
Montgomery County Public Schools are looking to cut hundreds of positions to close a nearly $40 million budget gap. The cuts follow the Montgomery County Council's failure to fully fund MCPS's budget request. Throughout the budget process, District 5 Councilmember Kristin Mink looked for ways to fully fund the school district. She joins the show to explain what the council can do now to support schools. Plus, she discusses her support for bills signed by the County Executive this week limiting federal immigration enforcement in the county, and we ask her to weigh in on the County Executive race. The D.C. Council is set for its first budget vote next week. It's been a challenging year as federal cuts and a decline in tax revenue have forced city leaders to weigh big cuts. Councilmember Christina Henderson takes us behind the scenes of negotiations and explains why she thinks slashing a fund that pays early childhood educators is the wrong move. Holocaust education is required by law in dozens of American states — but the tools to teach it haven't kept pace with the students who need to receive it. Rabbi Michael Beyo and Dr. Simon Young founded Six Million Voices to close that gap. Using museum-grade photorealistic 360-degree reconstructions — no VR headset, no app, just a browser — they take students inside Auschwitz, the Warsaw Ghetto, the synagogues burned on Kristallnacht, and the streets of a Jewish world that no longer exists. More than 350,000 people have been reached. Over 70,000 are high school students.Laurie Cardoza-Moore sat down with both men at NRB 2026 for a conversation that goes deeper than technology. The story of the Jewish people does not begin with the Holocaust and it does not end there. It begins with Abraham. And for Christians, understanding that story — honestly, fully, without flinching — is not optional. It is biblical. Psalm 116 begins with a spoiler alert. David tells us where he landed on the other side of the trial: he loves the Lord because God heard him and turned His ear toward him. Even when it seemed like God was not moving, David kept praying, kept watching, and kept expecting. God showed up in David's darkest valley, and the reminder for us is simple: God hears you and God sees you. When David was surrounded by trouble and there seemed to be no way out, he realized his only hope was for God to meet him right where he was. Real trouble produced real prayer, and that desperation created a heart of dependence. His peace was not found in knowing the answers but in knowing the God who guards and protects His people. When God revealed Himself in the valley, it produced a response. David took up the cup of salvation, called upon the name of the Lord, and recommitted himself to what God had called him to do. Because Jesus has been committed to us, our commitment to Him cannot be persuaded by circumstances.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/gS2iMywCWh0Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_

Text us here! Hersh, I want to put a colossal (big word for huge) disclaimer on this episode, but when I think about it, I need to have a disclaimer on this entire podcast. I don't really know how all hasn't been a target of offense at this point. As we meandered thru the topics today, the boys let loose on some advise like they usually do and would you know it, they gave an example of how to run a missions service... When you hear that part, you will understand, if possible, the title of today's show. As always, thanks for listening and please say tell me that you noticed that there was no description on last week's episode.... Send us Fan MailThe Podcast for today is one Vicki and I recorded August 14, 2023. The topic is our “Identity.” It is our most listened to podcast of the 178 we're recorded. I think it is still one of the most critical issues of life and of our advancing years. Who are we? What does our identity of being “in Christ” mean in terms growing older? What is life “in Christ” all about? Here it is again, just as we recorded it then. I hope you'll enjoy it again.Pressing on for all that God has for us “in Christ.”HalWe exist to call a generation of retiring boomers and aging believers to leverage their lives for the fame of Jesus and the glory of God. -------Hal's wife, Vicki, shares her heart about the importance of “Identity” in all of life, and particularly, in the aging years. Perhaps nothing is as important in life than knowing who God created us to be and to see ourselves as He sees us through the life and death of His Son, Jesus. Satan attempts to pull us away from that incredible truth by tempting us to see our value through what we do. Vicki speaks out of her own heart to women, but the truth of her heart speaks to men as well. Let's press deeper into our identity in Christ and stay focused on His purposes as we grow older.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. In a world with increasingly more information, opinions, and beliefs, how do we know what is true? John calls us to test the spirits and discern the difference between the real and the counterfeit. Not everything that claims to be from God is from God, and not every version of Jesus is the real Jesus. John gives us a belief test and a behavior test. The belief test asks what we believe about Jesus. The real Jesus is Jesus the Christ who came in the flesh. A substitute Jesus, a customized Jesus, or a watered-down Jesus has no power to save. But John doesn't stop with what we know. He reminds us that belief changes behavior. What we say we believe should affect how we live, how we love, how we handle conflict, and the fruit that comes from our lives. Our behavior should reflect what our mouths declare is true. As followers of Jesus, we must know what we believe, why we believe it, and be equipped by God's Word to discern the counterfeit when we see it. The world needs believers whose lives point people to the real Jesus.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/4us6iUAKsbkSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_

In this episode of the Wisdom Calling podcast, we explore one of the most overlooked aspects of wise leadership: quiet faithfulness. As King David nears the end of his life in 1 Kings 1–2, his final conversations reveal timeless lessons about leadership, accountability, loyalty, discernment, and legacy. Rather than focusing on accomplishments or power, David highlights the importance of character, stewardship, and honoring the people who quietly carry the weight behind the scenes. We'll discuss:• Why accountability is an essential part of leadership• The danger of elevating loyalty over wisdom and character• How wise leaders build discerning teams—not merely comfortable ones• The overlooked significance of Barzillai's quiet faithfulness• Why visible success is often supported by invisible people• David's final framework for true prosperity and leadershipWhether you're a business owner, executive, pastor, ministry leader, entrepreneur, or professional seeking to lead with greater wisdom, this episode offers practical and biblical insight for cultivating healthier teams, stronger cultures, and more faithful leadership. You can order the devotionals at https://amzn.to/4h8zFe6 or https://wisdomcalling.orgFollow us on Instagram: @wisdomcallingnow

The first public poll in the D.C. mayoral race is out, showing Ward 4 D.C. Councilmember Janeese Lewis George with a slight lead over former At-Large D.C Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. However, ranked-choice voting could play a huge role in the tightening race. The poll, from City Cast DC, is a fascinating deep dive glimpse into how age, race, geography, and even being a D.C. sports fan shape residents' political leanings. City Cast host and executive editor Michael Schaffer joins us to break down what they found and also what polling says about the D.C. Delegate race. The Prince George's County planning board is in turmoil following the resignation of chair Darryl Barnes amid allegations of misconduct. The change comes weeks after Maryland lawmakers added language to the state budget to curtail the department's spending. Prince George's County Councilmember Jolene Ivey gets behind the mic to discuss what's going on and why the council's role is in overseeing the planning board. Plus, we talk to her about budget negotiations and a new tax on certain businesses in the county.Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger this week surprisingly vetoed legislation that would have finally established a retail marijuana market in the Commonwealth. The veto once again stalls an effort that's been years in the making. Virginia House Delegate Paul Krizek, who represents portions of Fairfax County, is a co-sponsor of the now-dead bill and has pushed for legal sales for more than five years. He joins the show to tell us what happened, why the Governor said no, and why he's hoping to get it into the still unsettled budget. We also ask why the Governor's recent vetoes have put her at odds with some in her own party. John reminds us that God is light and God is love, and because we belong to Him, we should love one another with agape love, a deep affection that moves beyond words into action. The longer we follow Jesus, the more we will bear the character of our Father and love people the way He loves people. This is how we know love: Jesus willingly laid down His life for us. The cross is where we see love most clearly. To experience His grace is to be radically changed forever, and that love should overflow outward into the way we serve, give, and care for others. John challenges us not to just talk about love but to live it out. Love radically because you have been loved radically by God. Believe in Jesus and love people the way Jesus loves.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/ykrJvU2w7osSubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_
Text us here! Hershall, the show must go and and that is exactly what it did... Reagan had to fill in for Brooks and our Beloved Songleader. We still had a great day discussing odd encounters listening to music and having some laughs along the way... we talked to an old friend that was formerly a part of the show, ole Dink Burbank himself. It was a great conversation. Brooks came in at the very end and started to talk about something to do with cowboys and that's how it all ended. You'll have to show up next week to see if he continued his thought... Enjoy! Text us here! Hersh, great to have you back with us, as always. We had a special guest on today to talk about his education as a driver and he was a delight to have on the program. Of course, all the rest of the crew was here and we talked about a bunch of relevant topics like: our favorite childhood hymns, bluegrass music, and some great old jokes! I think you will enjoy the way we seamlessly meandered through the show almost as if time came to a dragging drip! We even had some dinosaur talk! We settled where the gospel ship is parking when it comes to dock to take us to somewhere... we just hope all of us a worthy to get on the boat, if you will and I hope you will...
