Today, Brenda sits down with Cicely Corry to explore why Gen Z is showing a greater spiritual openness than previous generations, even as women are leaving the church at higher rates than men for the first time in decades. They delve into the cultural forces and personal experiences fueling this change and offer practical ways that churches can create a more inviting space for women who may be spiritually seeking but wary of organized religion. Cicely Corry serves as the Editorial Director at Barna Group, where she oversees the creation of research-driven resources that help church leaders understand cultural and spiritual trends. Send us a textJehoiada & Jehoshabeath: Faithful to the EndThe story of Jehoiada ("Joe") and Jehoshabeath ("Beth") demonstrates how elderly believers can have tremendous impact even in their final decades.Age 83When evil Queen Athaliah destroyed the royal offspring to take the throne, "Joe" (about 83 years old) and "Beth" (around 80) rescued little Joash and hid him in the house of God.Age 90After protecting Joash for 7 years, "Joe" orchestrated his coronation as king at age 7, confronted the wicked queen Athaliah, and helped restore proper worship.Age 90-130For the next 40 years, "Joe" served as a mentor and spiritual guide to King Joash, helping him reign righteously.Age 130"Joe" died at the remarkable age of 130, having served God faithfully for 47 years from age 83-130.Tragically, after Jehoiada's death, Joash turned away from God and even had Jehoiada's son Zechariah executed when he prophesied against the king's unfaithfulness. This reminds us that while we can have tremendous influence, each person must ultimately make their own choices before God.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Biblical teaching is the nucleus of everything we do. It is our life source, and it's what God has entrusted to us as His church. When looking at why we value biblical teaching, we look at what we do, which is to preach the Word. Not part of it, but every God-breathed word in Scripture. The reason we preach the Word is that it teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains. It may offend our flesh, but that offense leads to brokenness over sin, and that brokenness turns us back to Him. When we preach the Word, when we live a life with the purpose of glorifying Him, the world hates us. The enemy wants to extinguish the very light that God has placed inside of you. We have to keep preaching the Word, keep living the Word, and keep sharing the Word no matter what the cost. Fairfax voters this week overwhelmingly elected Democrat James Walkinshaw to succeed the late Gerry Connolly in Congress in Virginia's 11th district. Walkinshaw, who was sworn in on Wednesday, takes over for his mentor during a particularly tumultuous time for Northern Virginia. Congressman Walkinshaw joined the show to discuss the 51,000 civilian federal workers who live in the district, a potential regional recession, and the possibility of a federal shutdown. Plus, we asked him to weigh in on Virginia's upcoming statewide elections. The House Oversight Committee advanced a series of bills this week that threaten to further undermine D.C.'s autonomy, including legislation replacing the locally elected D.C. attorney general with a presidential appointee, allowing youth 14 years or older to be tried for certain offenses, and ending cashless bail in the District. Introduced amendments also called for revoking the city's ban on right turns on red and prohibiting automatic traffic enforcement cameras. Also, this week, the federal takeover of D.C. police expired. Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen took the mic to discuss what comes next and why he believes the legislation would make the District less safe. We'll also asked about the upcoming second RFK stadium vote.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

But Proverbs also points us toward a better way: the wisdom of peace, patience, and self-control.In a culture quick to outrage, this episode is an invitation to look deeper—into the roots of our own frustration, the influences shaping us, and the path of wisdom that leads to reconciliation and life.Join us as we reflect, pray, and take practical steps toward becoming peacemakers in our families, workplaces, and communities. You can order the devotionals at https://amzn.to/4h8zFe6 or https://wisdomcalling.orgFollow us on Instagram: @wisdomcallingnow

Send us a textOur story regarding Eli begins not with Eli but with God's judge who will succeed him. God's successor to Eli will be the great prophet/judge Samuel so we begin with his birth and background.Samuel's BirthSamuel was born out of a godly family (1 Samuel 1.1-2.11). Hannah prayed for a son and promised to dedicate him to the Lord. Eli blessed her prayer, and when Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him to serve in the temple under Eli.Eli's FailureBy contrast, Eli's sons were wicked men (1 Samuel 2.12-17). They abused their priestly position and "despised the offering of the Lord." Though Eli knew of their sins, he did not restrain them. Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me? (1 Samuel 2.29).God revealed to Samuel the judgment that He would carry out on Eli because he did not rebuke his sons (1 Samuel 3.10-14). When the Philistines defeated Israel and captured the ark of God, both of Eli's sons were killed. Upon hearing the news, Eli fell backward from his seat, broke his neck, and died at age 98.The tragedy extended to the next generation 3 Eli's daughter-in-law died in childbirth, naming her son Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel."Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. New Identity Colossians 3 Chew the Bible S3Paul urges believers to set their hearts and minds on things above, where Christ is, rather than on earthly things. Since they have died with Christ and their life is now hidden in Him, they must put to death sinful behaviors such as sexual immorality, greed, anger, slander, and lying.Instead, they are to put on the new self, which is being renewed in Christ's image. In this new life, earthly divisions like Jew or Gentile, slave or free, do not matter—Christ is all and in all.Paul calls believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love, which binds everything together. The peace of Christ should rule in their hearts, and the word of Christ should dwell richly among them, expressed through teaching, encouragement, and songs of worship. Whatever they do, they should do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. He also gives practical instructions for Christian households: wives should respect their husbands, husbands should love their wives, children should obey their parents, fathers should not embitter their children, and slaves should obey their earthly masters sincerely—ultimately working as for the Lord rather than for men.Key Themes:Seek heavenly values, not earthly ones.Put off the old sinful nature; put on the new Christlike nature.Unity in Christ transcends divisions.Love is the supreme virtue.Practical guidance for relationships in the Christian home and daily life.Your words were found and I ate them
Dog Food 2 Kings 9 Chew the Bible S3Jehu Anointed King (v. 1–13):Elisha sends a young prophet to secretly anoint Jehu, a commander in Israel's army, as king. The prophet declares that Jehu is chosen by God to destroy the house of Ahab and avenge the blood of the prophets and servants of the Lord shed by Jezebel. After the prophet departs, Jehu's fellow officers at first question him, but when Jehu tells them the message, they quickly proclaim him king.Jehu Kills Joram, King of Israel (v. 14–26):Jehu immediately acts. King Joram (son of Ahab) and King Ahaziah of Judah are at Jezreel, where Joram is recovering from battle wounds. As Jehu approaches, Joram rides out to meet him and asks if there is peace. Jehu replies that there can be no peace while Jezebel's idolatry and witchcraft continue. Realizing Jehu's intent, Joram tries to flee, but Jehu shoots an arrow through his heart. Jehu orders Joram's body thrown into the field of Naboth, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy of judgment for Ahab's family.Jehu Wounds Ahaziah, King of Judah (v. 27–29):Ahaziah tries to escape but is wounded by Jehu's men near Ibleam. He flees to Megiddo, where he dies. The Death of Jezebel (v. 30–37):Jehu then enters Jezreel, where Jezebel awaits him. She paints her eyes and adorns her head, mocking him from a window. Jehu commands her attendants to throw her down, and they do so. Jezebel's blood splatters on the wall and horses, and Jehu tramples her body. Later, when servants attempt to bury her, they find only her skull, feet, and hands, as dogs have eaten the rest — fulfilling Elijah's prophecy that Jezebel's body would be like dung on the field in Jezreel.Key Themes:God's judgment against Ahab's house fulfilled.Jehu as an instrument of divine justice. The certainty of God's prophetic word (everything Elijah foretold comes to pass).Your words were found and I ate them
At CMC, our mission is to saturate the world by making disciples. We achieve this by helping people belong to the family of God, become mature disciples of Christ, and build the Kingdom of God together. That's why our values matter: Biblical Teaching, Intentional Community, Persistent Prayer, Surrendered Obedience, and Grateful Generosity. They drive our behaviors and form the framework of how we want to be known. And intentional community is the glue that holds it all together. Looking to the early church in Acts, we see that intentional community is authentic, consistent, generous, and missional. Our prayer is that our intentional community would be a reflection of who He is and what He has done. Listen to this sermon about why we value intentional community in our Who We Are series. Complete in Christ Colossians 2 Chew the Bible S3Paul expresses his deep concern for the believers, wanting them to be encouraged, united in love, and rooted in the full knowledge of Christ. He warns them not to be deceived by fine-sounding arguments or human philosophies that are empty and based on worldly traditions rather than Christ. He explains that in Christ dwells the fullness of God, and believers are made complete in Him. Through Christ, they have been spiritually circumcised, buried with Him in baptism, and raised with Him through faith.Paul emphasizes that God forgave their sins and canceled the written record of debt, nailing it to the cross. Christ disarmed rulers and authorities, triumphing over them. Finally, he warns against letting others judge them by religious rituals, food laws, festivals, or Sabbaths, since these were shadows pointing to Christ. He cautions against false humility, worship of angels, and strict rules about the physical body, which have no real power to restrain sinful desires.Key Themes:Fullness and completeness in Christ.Freedom from human traditions and religious legalism.Christ's victory over sin and spiritual powers.True faith focuses on Christ, not man-made rules.Your words were found and I ate them

With students across the region returning to class, local school superintendents discussed student safety, cell phone policies, and concerns over immigration enforcement. In Prince George's County, schools continue to deal with the fallout from the federal government freezing and then unfreezing millions of dollars in education funds. While funds are expected to be dispersed by next month, more federal cuts could be on the horizon. Interim Prince George's County Public Schools Superintendent Shawn Joseph joined the show to discuss the potential implications for Prince George's County schools. Plus, we discussed bus driver shortages, cell phone policies, test scores, and how schools are preparing for a possible increase in federal immigration enforcement.Joseph said the county experienced a decline in school attendance last year, and officials believe it's at least in part due to concerns about immigration enforcement. "43% percent of our students were out of school eighteen days or more, and it's significant within our immigrant population, and we think it's because of the fear of ICE and things happening," he said.Joseph said they are monitoring school attendance and want to send the message to the county's immigrant population that school remains a safe place.Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia's largest school district, is also dealing with concerns over immigration enforcement. Superintendent Michelle Reid got behind the mic to talk about how Fairfax County schools are supporting students, families, and staff. Plus, FCPS is suing the U.S. Education Department in an effort to prevent the agency from freezing federal funding due to the district's gender policies. Superintendent Reid said the school system's current policy of allowing students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity is both legal and in the best interest of students."We felt and still feel strongly that our policy is in accordance both with Virginia and federal law. And it still is aligned with the Title IX principles currently on the books," she said. Reid said the millions the federal government is threatening to withhold go in part to fund free and reduced-price lunches. Send us a text David was a man after God's own heart, and we all identify with him because of the way he lived his life. He was out there, you know, leading people making mistakes. I just just loving God passionately with his heart dancing before God. I mean, he was enjoying life with God. But there are a lot of lessons to learn from his life. I have the text there, and you can follow them all in your handout as well, but follow these texts, and let's learn from his his life in the next few minutes. In Second Samuel chapter 23 he lists out more than 30 friends who have shaped his life. I mean, that's a good discipline. Think back across your life, of the friends that you've had and how they have shaped your life. You know we talk about in the seven essentials for finishing well, the second one is, don't stop connecting with friends.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Every home has a purpose. God has entrusted our families and households to us so that His glory might be seen and His faithfulness displayed. But just as the Philistines formed against Shammah's bean field in 2 Samuel 23:11–12, the enemy still surrounds what God has given us, trying to trample and destroy. Shammah could have fled like the others, but instead, he stayed attentive, stood in the middle, and defended the field God had given him. In the same way, God calls us to fight for our homes and families that He has entrusted us with. We must remain on guard, stand firm in the middle of what God has given us, and fight with the only weapon the enemy cannot overcome—God's Word. In this battle, the most powerful posture of battle is prayer. As we stay attentive, take our stand, and defend what God has given us, we must continually cover our homes, our children, and our families in prayer. Listen to this sermon about how to protect our home when the enemy attacks in the final sermon in our Within The Wall series.Check out our video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/tHHj-esoJdISubscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/8wmeCwBf_zkLearn more about us at chestnutmountain.orgFollow us on Facebook & Instagram @chestnutmtn_Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast, leave a review, and let us know what you think.
Stampede 2 Kings 7 Chew the Bible Season 3In 2 Kings 7, Samaria was under siege and suffering from famine. Elisha prophesied that the Lord would provide food the next day at the city gates. A royal officer doubted this, but Elisha told him he would see it happen but not eat of it. Meanwhile, four lepers went to the enemy Aramean camp and discovered it abandoned—the Lord had caused the Arameans to flee in fear. The lepers shared the news, and the people rushed out to plunder the camp, bringing relief from the famine. The officer who had doubted was stationed at the city gate, but when the people surged out in a stampede, he was trampled to death—fulfilling Elisha's prophecy.Your words were found and I ate them

Paul warns the believers to watch out for false teachers who insist on circumcision and outward religious works. He explains that if anyone could boast in human credentials, it would be him — he was a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee, zealous, and blameless by the law's standards. Yet, he counts all of that as worthless compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.Paul emphasizes that righteousness does not come through the law but through faith in Christ. His goal is to know Christ, share in His sufferings, and experience the power of His resurrection. He admits he has not “arrived,” but presses forward like a runner in a race, striving toward the heavenly prize in Christ Jesus. He urges believers to follow his example and warns against those who live as “enemies of the cross,” whose focus is earthly things. Instead, Christians are reminded that their true citizenship is in heaven, from where they eagerly await Christ, who will transform their lowly bodies into glorious ones like His.Key Themes:True righteousness comes by faith in Christ, not by works or heritage. The Christian life is like a race — pressing forward, not looking back.Believers are citizens of heaven, awaiting Christ's return.Your words were found and I ate them

We talked about some important stuff along the way though. Things like: hobo's Shammah and his bean patch, unpaid electric bills, How to pack a vehicle for a trip. We ended by talking about how we can hear God's voice. Enjoy if possible!
