Lisa Gitelson - The Fresh Air Fund: Because a Summer Can Last a Lifetime. This is episode 756 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Lisa Gitelson is the CEO of The Fresh Air Fund. Each year the nearly 148-year-old nonprofit invites about 3,000 low-income New York City-based children ages 8-18 to spend the summer swimming, rowing, hiking, and stargazing in Fresh Air Fund camps. Throughout Lisa's career in public service, as an attorney and child welfare advocate, she has been dedicated to addressing the needs of underserved youth. Prior to joining The Fund, she was Assistant Executive Director/Legal Counsel for The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC). She is also an Adjunct Professor at Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, CUNY, where she teaches the Policy & Practice of Child Welfare. As Assistant Executive Director/Legal Counsel for NYSPCC, Lisa identified legislation and other public policy issues that impacted the organization's work and developed an advocacy agenda to move public policy efforts forward. Previously, she served as Associate Executive Director, Downstate, at the Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies (COFCCA) where she was responsible for bringing private foster care, juvenile justice, residential care and prevention services agencies together to coordinate advocacy efforts for the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. In this role, Lisa represented COFCCA member agencies in discussions with the Administration for Children's Services, the New York City Council and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Prior to COFCCA, Lisa was the Director of Foster Care and Adoption Services at Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services. She began her career as an attorney representing foster care agencies before serving in multiple leadership and supervisory roles at the New York City Administration for Children's Services, Family Court Legal Services. David Adams - CEO of The Urban Assembly - Improving the Craft of Teaching with AI. This is episode 750 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. David is the Chief Executive Officer of The Urban Assembly. He started with the UA in 2014 as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning, where he created the Resilient Scholars Program (RSP), a unique approach to integrating SEL into curriculum and classroom practices across the UA network. RSP has grown into a national program, serving schools and districts in Los Angeles, Houston, Syracuse, and other cities. Frank Lad is a mathematician, author, and an educator. Perhaps he was destined to have a full career in mathematics and science. His parents met as postdocs at the University of Chicago while working on The Manhattan Project, his mother collaborating with James Franck there. His specialty in mathematical probability took him to France and Italy, where he has worked with followers of Bruno de Finetti's ideas. Personal travels in India, Africa, Europe, Brazil, and some far East, have allowed him to deeply explore culture, history, and philosophy. For the past 26 years and currently, Lad has served as a research associate in mathematics and statistics at University of Canterbury in New Zealand, having lectured there previously for ten years. He had started his career teaching economics at the University of Utah, and spent a year in the Special Studies section of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, Washington, D.C. He has been a visiting scholar at the State University of New York (Albany) in Mathematics and Economics, and at the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Bologna in Statistics. He had been a research assistant at the Center for Studies in Population Planning, University of Michigan School of Public Health during graduate studies. He is the author of two published books, JUST PLAIN WRONG: The dalliance of quantum theory with the defiance of Bell's inequality (Austin Macauley, 2024) and Operational Subjective Statistical Methods: a mathematical, philosophical, and historical introduction (John Wiley, 1996). Lad speaks four languages: English, French, Italian, and Hindustani. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio into a large family of nine children, he is a dual citizen of the United States and New Zealand. He currently resides in NZ, tending his garden and tutoring neighborhood children in arithmetic. NL Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1. This is episode 743 of Teaching Learning Leading K12. N.L. Holmes is an award-winning novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career, she served as a nun for two decades. In between, she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical Studies. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. She taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in New Jersey and the University of South Florida for many years. Her ten published novels embrace two series of historical fiction: the Lord Hani Mysteries, set in the Egypt of Akhenaten, and the Empire at Twilight series, featuring life in the Hittite Empire in the 13th century BCE. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” Holmes resides with her husband and three cats. She splits her time between Tampa, Florida, and northern France, where she gardens, weaves and plays the violin. She also has an adult son. Self-Regulation: Controlling Your Behaviors, Part 2. This is episode 741 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. In the first episode on Self-Regulation, I shared some thoughts about what self-regulation means and how it appears in the classroom. (Episode 737). I use the term in referring to you the adult in the classroom keeping control of your behaviors. I also shared some thoughts about things that you can do to help keep you in control of you. Today, I am sharing a specific strategy. It sounds simple enough but at times we can get frustrated with behaviors that the kids have previously exhibited and so we always associate those behaviors with that particular kid. To overcome always affiliating the bad with those one or two students something that works really well is to post an image, drawing, or place an object in the room that you will see that is there to remind you of something that student does well, or to make you think about a calming/happy thought, or to think of some specific positive characteristic the child exhibits most times. By doing this you will help counteract any negative thoughts that you immediately go to that are associated with previous bad behavior by that student. You will see the picture, the drawing, the object and say to yourself, "Remember you put that there to be patient with this child." Does that make sense? Try it. Create a system to file your paper. In this episode - Organizing Your Paperwork, Part 2: Creating a System I share with you how to make it easy to get out from under your piles by creating a system for filing. I share that you need to get your supplies and locations to file. 1. Get hanging file folder cabinets or furniture that has hanging file drawers. 2. Get hanging file folders with plastic tabs. 3. Get regular file folders. 3. Get a label maker. 4. Decide how you will file using the alphabet. 5. Determine how you will write the name of what is in the file folder. 6. Start filing and get rid of those piles. Before you know it, you will be pile free and feel less stressed because now your desk is no longer a mess, and you can find your paperwork. Marilyn Raichle - Don't Walk Away: A Care Partner's Journey. Enhancing the Lives of People Living with Dementia and their Care Partners. This is episode 732 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Marilyn Reichle, author of Don't Walk Away, grew up in the shadow of Alzheimer's. Nearly everyone in her father's family and many in her mother's had developed the disease. But Raichle became transformed in her views towards those living with dementia, inspiring the launch of a book and several non-profits that helps — and celebrates — those living with the memory-robbing disease. Raichle began her career in the theatre, founding the Seattle International Children's Festival. She served for 11 years at North America's largest international festival for children, introducing children to world culture through the performing arts. She then became the founding executive director of American Voices for nine years, building an informed, engaged, and good-humored community. In 2007, she received a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She received her BA from the University of Washington. Upon returning to Seattle, her career changed when she became the family caregiver for her parents, both of whom were developing dementia. In 2010, inspired by her mother's newfound artistic ability, she founded The Art of Alzheimer's, celebrating the creativity of those living with dementia and the power of the arts to enrich and empower their lives. In 2019 she became the Executive Director of Maude's Awards for Innovation in Alzheimer's Care, celebrating and rewarding innovative programs and practices of care that are enhancing the lives of people living with dementia, and their care partners. Lt. Col. Tom Williams USMC (Ret.) - Doorsteps of Hell: The Arizona & Tropical Jungles 1969 -1970; The Heart of a Marine Series, Book 1. This is episode 721 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. On 20 December 1944, Tom Williams was born Tom Collins in Savannah, GA. Abandonment by his biological father at the age of six months old, profoundly impacted Tom's early life causing his mother to farm him out to relatives while she worked to make a living for them both. At the age of six years old, Tom's mother met and married U.S. Air Force Major Carl F. Williams Jr. This fortuitous marriage would bring about a radical change in Tom's life. As a military dependent, he immediately found himself traveling the world, living in foreign lands, learning about Ancient Roman history and archaeology, assimilating a basic conversance in the French, Arabic, and Japanese Languages, as well as being immersed in their respective cultures. After Tom's dad retired, his family moved to the Williams' ancestral homestead established in 1832, in Dooly County Georgia. Yet again, living, working, and learning to manage the family farm would have another major influence on Tom's future interests, especially regarding his love for the agrarian way of life. From 1964-68 Tom attended North Georgia College (NGC) acquiring a BA degree in history and a minor in psychology and political science. He then attended the Marine Corps' Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, Va., where he set the Marine Corps' record of 52 seconds for the Obstacle Courses and was the Platoon Honor Man. He then completed The Basic School (TBS) for all newly commissioned Marine Corps 2nd lieutenants, also at Quantico, graduating in the top 10% of his class. Before leaving Quantico, Tom then attended and graduated from High Intensity Language Training (HILT) for Vietnamese. As an infantry officer, Tom deployed as a 2nd lieutenant to Vietnam in 1969-70 where he commanded an infantry platoon in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, followed by commanding a reconnaissance platoon as a 1st lieutenant in Alpha Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Subsequent to this combat tour, Tom commanded the Shore Party Platoon at the 1st Marine Brigade, followed by commanding the 81mm Mortar Platoon in 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station, Hawaii. Twenty-five months later, on two days' notice, Tom was redeployed back to Vietnam, as a captain, where he served as a school trained aerial observer. During this second combat deployment, Tom was imbedded with a Vietnamese O-1 Bird Dog squadron flying 183 combat missions from Hue Phu Bai Airfield, during the 1972 Easter Offensive. During his twenty-nine-year career, Tom participated in six amphibious deployments: four Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) and two Marine Expeditionary Brigades (MEBs). In 1976 as a school trained Communications Officer, he participated in the Non-Combat Evacuation Operation (NEO) of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1980-83, under secret orders, he was assigned as the regimental operations officer for developing the one-of-a-kind Mechanized Combined-Arms Task Force (MCATF), at Twenty-nine Palms, CA. In 1983-86, he was the Infantry Weapons Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) Washington, DC, responsible for replacing or improving all Marine Corps infantry weapons. From 1986-90, he was the Amphibious Operations Officer for Commander Sixth Fleet's NATO staff, Commander Striking Forces South (CSFS) in Naples, Italy, responsible for coordinating all NATO amphibious training exercises throughout the Mediterranean Sea. That was followed by his participation in the First Gulf War, 1990-91, as a G3 operations officer with I MEF HQ. His last major active-duty assignment was as the G3 for the first Marine Component HQ to the European Command (EUCOM), in Stuttgart, Germany, 1993-96. After retiring in 1997, he spent eleven years as a contract mentor and trainer, six years in Saudi Arabia (1998-06) and five years in Afghanistan (2006-12). Currently, he lives an agrarian life on a 75-acre cattle property, Camelot, located on the Lamington Rain Forest Plateau in southeastern Queensland, Australia. He raises beef cattle, sells free-range eggs, and is a beekeeper, a gardener, and is developing his home into a Bed & Breakfast, while also writing a series of books, Heart of a Marine, in which he shares his Marine Corps experiences and his life's lessons learned. The Subfolder - Procedures: Sharing How You Do Things in Your Classroom. This is episode 719 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. To better help your substitute teachers in your classroom create a subfolder where you leave specific information like work assignments, bell schedules, class seating chart, and map of school with bathrooms identified as well as parking place for the substitute teacher to park in. Also provide additional information about the school that might be helpful like the names of teachers and front office personnel who can assist. Additionally, share procedures for how you do things in your classroom. A few classroom procedures to include are: 1. Procedures for sending a student to the restroom 2. Procedures for handing out and collecting technology 3. Starting and Ending Class 4. Collecting and distributing classwork/homework 5. Taking Care of Your Substitute Teachers: The Subfolder. This is episode 715 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. There will come a day that you will have to be out of school. You will have to miss a day whether you have to take a personal day or a sick day. You may have to attend training or stay home so that you can take your child to the orthodontist, or you may not be feeling well. No matter there will be a day that you have to be out of school and a substitute teacher will fill your shoes. Are you ready? When a substitute steps into your class do you have a place where he can find the information to know what you need focused on for the time that you are out? Do you have a place where the sub can find bell schedules and weekly calendars and lunch menus for the day? This place is a subfolder. The subfolder should be placed in a visible location. The subfolder should stand out from the rest of the information that you have on your desk. Kai and Warren Kushner: Balancing Academics and Athletics through a Personalized Education. This is episode 714 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Kai Kushner is a competitive surfer who lives in Manhattan Beach, California and travels the world to compete and train. He is 17 years old and has been doing this since he was 10. Kai has been surfing in Southern California since he was six. A competitive surfer like his father Warren Kushner, Kai has become one of the top junior male surfers in the nation with the hopes of participating in the Olympics in the future. While Kai spends more time in the ocean than on dry land, his education remains a high priority for both him and his parents. Mother Dana Kushner credits Kai's success academically and in athletics to a personalized approach to his education. Having been with Fusion Academy since middle school, Kai has been able to succeed in his grades while also finding time to train. Often traveling, Kai's attendance doesn't falter with both virtual and in-person options available to him. When I was in the National Guard and US Army Reserve we used after action reports to help improve our unit's performance. We talked about what happened, what could have been better, and what we would do to accomplish more. We used those reports and the conversations to help improve the success of the unit. When I was a high school principal A colleague suggested that I start using journaling to help me problem solve. He was right. It was amazing what having a conversation with myself at the end of the workday did for me. It helped work through challenges and create better solutions. I still have conversations with myself through journaling. I focus on asking these three questions: 1. What happened? 2. What went right and what went wrong? 3. What would I do differently next time? My focus today is talking about what to write and determining the frequency that you will write. Try journaling to help you become better at working through challenges. You won't regret it.
