24: Top 5 Mistakes Life Coach Students Make

Many students assume that their life coach certification program offers everything they need to pursue their dream of starting a successful life coaching business. However, they later find out that only a portion of the information needed is provided. Yes, they may learn a few tools such as active listening and questioning techniques, but they are never provided with evaluation forms, intake forms or confidentiality forms. I hear from students in other programs who want to know what forms to use. And, my first thought is why did their program fail to provide this to them. Here's my list of the top 5 mistakes that prospective life coach students make. Mistake #5: Students never ask to see a syllabus before starting their program. This is key so they know every detail they will learn in their program. Mistake #4: Students accept that their program does not teach marketing skills. This also is puzzling. Coaches need to have the knowledge of starting, operating and marketing their business. Otherwise, it is wasted money. And, telling students to create business cards and hand out to people in line at the grocery store is NOT marketing. Students should be well equipped with how to set up a website, Facebook ad campaign, funnel and Google adwords campaigns. This is the key to a successful business. Mistake #3: Students never ask about the credentials of their instructor. Having an instructor who has only been a life coach for two years and has never taught previously, could be a sign to stay away. However, if the instructor has an advanced degree in psychology or counseling and has been a life coach for 16 years and has taught graduate level courses for 13 years, this is a smarter choice. This is because they have been in the trenches and know what life is life as a life coach and instructor. This results in a richer experience when learning. Mistake #2: Students choose a program that does not offer support post certification. Having the support of a program after obtaining your certification is key in ensuring you will be successful. Students often feel overwhelmed with the amount of information learned and have anaysis paralysis. Having assistance along the way gives you the best chance you will make the right decisions in setting up and operating your life coaching business. The alternative is that students go into Facebook life coach groups and ask for help. This is similar to the blind leading the blind. Mistake #1: The number one mistake students make when selecting a program is to choose it solely on cost. They figure that they can save x number of dollars by going to a different school over another. However, what they actually did was waste a bunch of money because they never received the training they needed to be successful. So, paying extra to ensure you receive everything you need is a wise decision. Tim Laskis, Ph.D.

Show Notes As an entrepreneur, stress is inevitable, in fact, as a living, breathing person, there is no getting away from this feeling of emotional or physical tension. What goes on in our thought process about the events going on in our lives will determine how we feel about them. As entrepreneurs, we can get wiped out easily as the only speed we know is go. Dr. Tim Laskis was the perfect guest to break down this whole matter of stress for us. Tim shared insight about what causes stress as well as how to effectively manage it. When our brains are over-stimulated for extended periods we become stressed. Stress is never eliminated but rather managed. The key is to find a way to manage it before it gets to record high. There will always be things coming up that we never had to deal with before. One simple thing to help you relax is by adjusting your breathing. Tim went in details about how to effectively breathe for relaxation. Regulating your breathing works for everyone, Tim says.   TOP TIP: No matter how bad it gets, you can always turn it around. You do not have to burn out yourself so much that you hit burn out. ---- Connect with Dr. Tim Laskis Website Twitter LinkedIn Visit our Sponsor: Jamaica Stock Exchange Email: Heneka Watkis-Porter

However, Tim also knows failure very well.Tim almost failed out of high school and graduated at the back of his class with grades of C’s, D’s and F’s. Also, he failed at almost every sport while growing up. He simply did not fit in anywhere. He even went to work with his father who owned an automotive air conditioning company and was quickly demoted to sweeping floors.Tim experienced ongoing failure while growing up. He simply felt insecure in every way. He was not gifted in any area. However, he turned everything around and earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with an emphasis in organizational behavior. Effect on Emotions It's helped me to keep things in check. It's helped me to regulate my thoughts and my emotions because I'm a practitioner of cognitive behavioral therapy which is; your thoughts really control your emotions and your emotions control your behavior. Being able to utilize deep breathing and being able to relax yourself to help you analyze situations more clearly. When you see them more clearly you have less intense emotion and your reaction and behavior then is much better. When people aren't very mindful they have these negative thoughts that impact others, that impact how they feel and then their behaviors negatively impact others and themselves. Thoughts on Breathing Belly breathing is the go-to tool. It's where you take in that deep breath through your nose. You fill that lower diaphragm, you hold it, you exhale, you do that a couple of times, it helps to restart and erase everything that's going on and put you in a neutral state. [show-notes-breathing] Suggested Resources Book: None App: Schedule Once Bullying Story In high school I wasn't in the cool group. There were times that I might have been targeted. Kids might say something, but for the most part I got along with everyone. There were probably one or two people that I didn't. When bullies go after someone and they target their victim, a lot of times it's about the bully, it's not about the victim. The victims will often look at themselves and go, what's wrong with me. What's so bad about me that they pick on me? And they will often internalize it. In working with adolesents who have been bullied, to a really high level, they turn that anger inward. Many times they will get into cutting themselves and self-harm and these really deep down negative thoughts about themselves. That's the real danger with bullies is that mental impact that they make. Maybe they give you a wedgie or they put you in a head-lock or punch you or something. That kind of stuff, the bruises go away, but the mental scarring of that is what is the real dangerous part with bullies. It's to help victims understand that it's not about you as the victim, it's about them. And don't internalize that negativity about yourself. That's what often happens with victims.
