Ever find yourself enchanted by the sparkle of a circus? Not just the outfits (which I've always admired)—but the incredible dedication behind the scenes? Well, today's podcast is a must-listen as I delve into the fascinating world of the Circus Ring of Fame in Sarasota, Florida, with my brilliant guest, Bill Powell. Funny story: this whole conversation started because I stumbled upon an old photo of myself doing one of my first celebrity interviews—with a monkey from the Royal Hanneford Circus! (Yes, a monkey. It was as hilarious as you can imagine.) That quirky blast from the past sent me spiraling down an acrobatic rabbit hole of circus research, and, wow, did I uncover some incredible stuff! Bill, who's the Chairman and CEO of the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation and a circus industry veteran, joined me to share insights into Sarasota's vibrant circus history and the resilience of this amazing community. Sarasota, as it turns out, isn't just another sunny Florida spot—it's the Circus Capital of America, a place where legends have performed and lived since the Ringling Brothers made it their winter home. Bill's expertise runs deep. Before leading the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation, he built an impressive career at Feld Entertainment, the company behind iconic productions like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, and Monster Jam. His background gave him a unique understanding of the art, business, and enduring legacy of the circus world. But not everything has been bright lights and applause. The Circus Ring of Fame was recently devastated by hurricanes that tore through the area, leaving their iconic home in St. Armand's Circle Park in need of major repairs. The damage was so extensive that the much-anticipated 2025 Circus Ring of Fame Global Awards Show has sadly been postponed to 2026. Bill shared how this setback has fueled the community's determination to rebuild. As he put it, “This isn't our first rodeo hurricane.” Despite the challenges, the Circus Ring of Fame under Bill's leadership is finding innovative ways to keep its magic alive. They've incorporated QR codes into their legendary plaques, so visitors can scan and dive into the incredible stories, photos, and videos of circus legends who've shaped the art form. Bill also gave me an insider's view of what makes circus performers so special. He described the circus world as a place where people dedicate their entire lives to creating “six minutes of perfection.” Think about that! From trapeze acts to being shot out of cannons, these performers are the ultimate pros, bringing joy to audiences through unmatched artistry and effort. If you're ever in Sarasota, visiting the Circus Ring of Fame should be on your list—especially once the community's hard work restores it to its former glory. In the meantime, you can support their mission and learn more about these incredible artists. Listen to the full episode of The Debbie Nigro Show and get inspired by the magic of circus legends.
Feld Entertainment and MX Sports have shared analytics of the 2024 broadcasts on NBC, with double-digit percentage increases in total audience delivery and minutes streamed across 31 events among the highlights. The programming stats are telling, especially amid current television trends, and when paired with live attendance figures and online followers, it shows how SuperMotocross is part of the popularity boom that racing is experiencing. Live sports and the audiences they draw play an important factor in the television business, and for motorsports especially, the shift to streaming has been a big win, as the investment by broadcasters to get a share of an audience means more racing is happening and viewers are reliably tuning in in recording setting numbers.SuperMotocross will be one of a few motorsports on NBC in 2025, and, given the growth from consistent scheduling and the amount of content produced, it'll be interesting to see how the series is integrated into Peacock, as every race will again be shown live on the streaming service while television broadcasts will be split between NBC, CNBC, and the USA Network.

For the September episode of Mind Your Business, Podcast Master Andrew Lambert welcomed Tyler Delong into the McKee Financial Studio for a great conversation! Tyler Delong is the owner of Delong Rigging Solutions, and this type of rigging does not involve construction sites or large ships. Tyler grew up in Bloomington, across the country, and around the globe. While Bloomington was always where he sent his mail, he grew up following his dad on tours for groups like KISS where his dad worked as a rigger. These experiences led to him making the decision at a very young age that he was also going to be a rigger when he grew up. He earned his BA in Theatre with minors in Telecommunications and Labor Studies from Indiana University. In 2017, he made the decision to blog a road trip across the country, and soon after his rigging career went big. Tyler has spent the majority of his career working as a touring technician, primarily as the Tour Rigger/Automation Tech. His most recent touring was as a Production Manager for Feld Entertainment (for Sesame Street Live). Tyler shares with us fun stories from on tour, how celebrities treat their crew, what life is like on a tour bus, and how he started his business. He shares great tips on starting your own business – including how you overcome challenges that inevitably come your way – and why having a great team around you is absolutely essential. Andrew gets Tyler to share a crazy tour story, talk about some of his favorite shows to work on (Mama Mia, Blue Man Group, Disney On Ice), and calls him out on bringing in a Lambert Cafe mug without ever having been there! This is a fascinating episode about a career you may never have known existed until now. Give it a listen! A famous American circus has been reimagined and reborn without the use of animals in the show. The family event now centers on humans performing tricks, including walking on a wire and flying through the air on a trapeze high above the ground. Feld Entertainment owns the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. The company talked to the Associated Press about what people can expect to see at the traveling show in 2023. It opens in September. A group of 75 performers from 18 countries will carry out the acts, which combine artistry, skill and strength. Some will perform jumps, runs and other tricks on a wire high above the ground. The wire is stretched into a triangular path more than seven and a half meters up in the air. Flying trapeze artists will also cut through the air way up high, flipping as they move. Others perform acts on self-turning wheels, bicycles, unicycles and skateboards. The “Greatest Show on Earth” as the company calls it, opens its 2023 season in Bossier City, Louisiana. It will hold shows in nine other states through the end of the year, including Ohio, Missouri, Maryland and Oklahoma. It restarts in 2024 in Florida, home to Feld Entertainment. Feld Entertainment says it aimed to create a completely new kind of circus. “We knew we were going to come back. We didn't know exactly how,” says Kenneth Feld, chair and chief of Feld Entertainment. “It took us a long time to really delve in and take a look at Ringling in different ways. It became a re-imagination, a rethinking of how we were going to do it.” The circus closed in 2017 after years of decreasing sales and protests over the use of animals in the circus. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals praised the “animal-free” reform. The new production design includes moveable stairs and two main stages. Crowds watching will have a 360-degree view with live camera feeds and virtual reality.“我们知道我们会回来的。 Juliette Feld Grossman is chief operating officer of Feld Entertainment. She said, “We have so much activity and action so we want to make sure that we never miss the big moments in the show.” The reimagined show extends the circus's long history. The Ringling circus was around before automobiles, airplanes or movies. It first opened in 1871. The Feld family bought the circus in 1967. Kenneth Feld said that there is something about the circus that people hold dear. “When you're on a high wire and you're doing a backward somersault on the wire or you're doing something really extraordinary, I don't care where you are. You appreciate that. You understand the danger of it, the thrill of it.”Juliette Feld Grossman 是 Feld Entertainment 的首席运营官。
THE RETURN OF RINGLING BROTHERS BARNUN & BAILEY CIRCUS The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which shut down in 2017 after a storied 146-year run of three-ring entertainment around the world, could be making a comeback. Officials from Florida-based Feld Entertainment, which owns the circus operation, said during a recent panel discussion that a new version of the circus without animals is expected to make its debut in 2023. Many observers believe that animal rights protests targeting Ringling Bros. contributed to a decline in ticket sales that led the company to cease operations. It grew famous on the strength of animal trainers like Gunther Gebel-Williams, among others, working with lions and tigers. The company dropped elephants from its shows in 2016 and said at the time that ticket sales declined more than expected. For years, PETA representatives and other groups claimed the circus mistreated the elephants, tigers, lions and other animals featured in its shows. While Ringling Bros. struggled before it shut down, the Canadian company Cirque du Soleil exploded with dozens of shows around the world, all without animals. CLOSING ACT The "Greatest Show on Earth" is getting its curtain call. Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus said in a statement that the show will end is 146-year run in May. The iconic circus declined in recent years due to high operating costs and long, costly legal battles with animal rights groups, such as the one to eliminate elephant acts. Ticket sales had already fallen, but they dropped more significantly than anticipated after the elephants were retired last May, according to the statement. The company's two circus shows, Out of This World and Circus Xtreme, have 30 shows left, including appearances in Atlanta, Brooklyn and Boston. The final shows are May 7 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., and May 21 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. "This was a difficult business decision to make, but by ending the circus tours, we will be able to concentrate on the other lines of business within the Feld Entertainment portfolio," said Juliette Feld, chief operating officer. "Now that we have made this decision, as a company, and as a family, we will strive to support our circus performers and crew in making the transition to new opportunities." The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami, The Associated Press reported. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a major critic of the circus for its treatment of animals, celebrated the announcement. The “R” in Ringling combines the inquisitiveness of a question mark, along with the punctuated excitement of an exclamation point. This unique design creates the Ringling interrobang, which is a perfect symbol to punctuate the “WOW” and curiosity of the brand. “The new Ringling logo illustrates the essence of the brand combined with modern simplicity,” said Juliette Feld Grossman, Chief Operating Officer of Feld Entertainment and Producer of The Greatest Show On Earth. “The logo is designed to flex and adapt across any brand communication. The contemporary look will invite curiosity and captivate families as they discover more ways to become a part of the awe-inspiring world of Ringling.” The live production of The Greatest Show On Earth will celebrate amazing talent from around the world, displaying incredible feats that push the limits of human potential and create jaw-dropping moments. After decades of working separately, and even competitively against each other, Feld Entertainment and MX Sports have come together to form the SuperMotocross World Championship. The series, set to launch at the end of 2023, will seed the top finishers from the 250 and 450 Classes at Monster Energy Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross into a three-race series and crown two overall champions at the LA Coliseum in October. But the added hybrid races are just part of the program, which includes a 10-million dollar yearly purse made possible by a newly renegotiated television package, improved communication between the two series and the motorcycle manufacturers, and a clear pathway from amateur levels to professional competition. Dave Prater of Feld Entertainment and Carrie Coombs-Russell of MX Sports joined me for a conference call to discuss why and how SMX came to be shortly after the news was released, a 30-minute conversation that cleared up current misconceptions. Expect full details for the 2023 race season, including the schedules for Supercross, Pro Motocross, and SuperMotocross, to drop in October.

LBE was the theme for this year's Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. We visited the show and here are highlights from our conversations with Crayola and FELD Entertainment.
What's happening today: O.C. lawsuit blames Coastal Fire on utility's refusal to update electrical hardware or trim vegetation near its power lines; L.A Controller Ron Galperin renews call for Los Angeles to put shelters or housing on unused city land; L.A. Unified, the nation's second largest school district expects to get a lot smaller over the next ten years; Last year, Gov. Newsom's Senate Bill 62 that protects garment industry workers inspires similar U.S. Senate bill; Florida based Feld Entertainment says it is bringing back the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. After a five-year hiatus, Manatee County-based Feld Entertainment is bringing back the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, this time with no animals and a focus on human performers. We talk with the Circus' producer, Juliette Feld Grossman, about their new entertainment and business model and impact on Florida and the west coast, which has had ties to the circus going back a century.
Washington Post: Many countries ban circuses with wild animals. These lawmakers want the U.S. to follow suit. Mexico, Peru and several other Latin American countries have banned or restricted the use of animals in traveling circuses in recent years. Performing animals are even rarer in Europe, where many nations prohibit them. There is no such federal law in the United States. But dozens of local bans, as well as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's recent decision to fold its tent, have some lawmakers hoping the American political terrain might now be fertile enough to send all circus elephants, tigers and bears to retirement. U.S. Reps. Ryan Costello (R-Penn.) and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) appeared on Capitol Hill this week to introduce a bill that would prohibit wild or exotic animal performances in traveling circuses. Flanked by television actors Jorja Fox and Eric Szmanda, the representatives argued that the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act — known by the unwieldy acronym TEAPSPA — would end the suffering of creatures that profit-motivated humans force to perform unnatural behaviors and live in cramped conditions. “I don't think that those practices have any place in the fabric of our society,” said Costello, who added that his constituents are keenly interested in animal welfare issues. [One problem with shutting down the circus: Where will the animals go?] The question is whether they and lots of other Americans are interested enough to push for a nationwide ban on circus animals. The bill is only the latest iteration of a proposal that's been introduced in Congress several times before but has never gotten far. Also at the Hill event was former U.S. representative Jim Moran of Virginia, who noted that he was “sorry” it had never passed before but said the idea “did make some inroads.” There's little question that public sentiment about performing and captive animals, particularly those considered highly intelligent, is changing. The Ringling Bros. announcement in January, which cited a decline in ticket sales, came after local laws and pressure from animal protection groups prompted the show to retire its elephants. Last year, SeaWorld decided to stop breeding orcas, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore is planning to move its dolphins to a sanctuary. And animal welfare issues, as Costello suggested, have far more bipartisan support than many topics under consideration in Washington. [Ringling's elephants are retiring. Will their lives be better?] What's more, backers of the bill say, the Trump administration's zeal for cost-cutting could work in their favor. Circuses with animals are subject to federal inspection under the Animal Welfare Act. Retiring the animals would therefore reduce spending on inspections, making it a “win-win” for the government and for the creatures, said Jan Creamer, president of Animal Defenders International, whose campaigns helped drive the Latin America bans. “There's an immediate budget cut,” Creamer said. She said a ban would affect 19 traveling circuses with about 300 animals. A trainer moves a dromedary during a show at the Cedeno Hermanos Circus in Mexico City in 2015, before a ban in that nation took effect. (Henry Romero/Reuters) But there's also an anti-regulatory zeal these days in Washington, and many lawmakers are loathe to dole out sweeping new restrictions to industries — and that includes circuses. One opponent of TEAPSPA is the Cavalry Group, an advocacy group for “animal enterprise,” which last year said the idea “would deprive countless Americans the ability to experience endangered animals up close, such as elephants and tigers.” The company that runs Ringling Bros., of course, has also lobbied against the bill in the past. Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Feld Entertainment, indicated it would no longer be a priority now that the circus is closing. But, he said, it remains a bad idea premised on inaccurate information about how circus animals are trained and cared for. “This is clearly driven by animal rights groups, rather than being based in any factual information or talking to people who work with exotic animals,” Payne said. “There are exceptions for film, television, advertising and rodeos. This is clearly driven by these organizations who are targeting circuses.” Moran and Creamer, for their part, seemed to acknowledge that the idea is not very likely to sail through Congress, though Moran said a lot of “grass-roots activity” would help. In other words: Public pressure — plus a plethora of competing entertainment options — helped bring an end to the 146-year-old Ringling circus, and it would probably take a whole lot of public pressure on lawmakers to lead to a national ban. Creamer seemed unfazed. Bills her organization has pushed in other countries have gone through “three, four or more evolutions,” she said. The political landscape, she added, “does need to evolve.” Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. Dave Prater has been part of Supercross for decades and his current role as Senior Director of Operations for Two-Wheels at Feld Entertainment means he's involved in almost every aspect of the series, from team relations and tour scheduling to television broadcasting and social media strategy.Prater's input is especially important now, as Supercross is beginning a new era. The organization has experienced its share of setbacks and successes since 2020, a chain of events that made Feld Entertainment reassess plans for future growth, improved their connection to the paddock, and gave them chance to try things with Tuesday night races. Ultimately, Feld Entertainment decided it'd be in the series' best interest to end their working agreement with the FIM and return to a 17-stop tour of venues exclusively in the United States, with races managed by the AMA and happening in the usual Saturday evening time slot.
Sean Brennen, PR Manager- Motorsports for Feld Entertainment, discusses the Supercross season so far, how Feld Entertainment has dealt with Covid protocols for the race season and their other tours, and the Supercross Futures Program. We also discuss the KTM Junior Race Program, Ryan Dungey's involvement, and how electric bikes are changing the game! Follow Supercross Live on Instagram and Twitter!
