This one is a super quick episode today, as I didn't want to do another replay, but also I don't have the time at present to continue with our series on pain and nutrients, as those episodes take about a day to research and write up. So, today I want to talk about something that I've been discussing with two clients lately, and it occurred to me, that you might benefit as well. Regulating the nervous system and our stress response can have a profound and positive impact on our endometriosis pain levels and our energy levels (and of course, our stress levels and mental health). I won't go into the science of it here, because I have other episodes on this and this is supposed to be a quick episode, but in short, our cortisol levels and our stress response don't just influence our experience of stress, but our entire sleep-wake cycle and energy levels over the day. They also influence our pain signals and can turn up the volume on pain. In today's episode, Colleen dismantles one of the most common mindset traps she see's in her clients: the belief that anxiety is something to get rid of. If you've ever said, “I'm just an anxious person,” or used alcohol to calm your nerves before a flight, presentation, or party—you're not alone. But what if anxiety itself isn't the problem? She'll walk you through a real client breakthrough where they shifted the focus away from “less anxiety” and toward something far more powerful: a regulated nervous system. You'll learn why trying to “not drink” or “not be anxious” backfires neurologically, and what to focus on instead.

How to hold your clarity when the culture demands your composure There's a kind of tired that has nothing to do with how much you're doing, and everything to do with who you're being asked to be. In this episode, Mischelle names the hidden emotional labor women carry in male-dominated, image-obsessed, and emotionally unsafe spaces. You're not just managing responsibilities, you're managing perception. And your nervous system feels every ounce of it. This isn't a call to be louder. It's an invitation to come back to your own discernment, your own wisdom, and your own presence. Inside this episode: Why your clarity keeps getting misread as “too much”The emotional cost of over-preparing to be perceivedWhat emotional regulation in unsafe rooms actually feels likeHow to reclaim your presence without apologyA micro-reset you can use today, no self-betrayal required Plus, Mischelle shares a networking moment that changed how she sees performance, perception, and her own peace. Send us a textThe world feels increasingly chaotic and unpredictable. Global events, endless news cycles, and persistent uncertainty have left many of us stuck in a state of nervous system dysregulation that doesn't seem to subside. Marie Sloane returns to the podcast to share practical wisdom about finding stability when everything around us feels unstable.Marie introduces us to a transformative "bottom-up" approach to managing anxiety. She explains why our typical cognitive strategies often fall short when our bodies are in fight-or-flight mode, using the vivid metaphor of a kindergarten classroom during a fire drill. Just as kindergartners can't hear the teacher's reassurances while alarms are blaring, our rational brain can't effectively process information when our nervous system is activated.Through her three-part regulation pyramid, Marie offers concrete techniques that address our physiology first, emotions second, and thoughts third. From surprising somatic tools like popping sour candy (which forces salivation and signals safety to your body) to bilateral stimulation that helps process emotions, each strategy is designed to meet you exactly where you are in moments of distress. What makes this conversation particularly valuable is its practicality. These aren't abstract concepts but immediate, accessible tools you can use anywhere—during a stressful meeting, after reading troubling headlines, or when feeling overwhelmed by world events. The beauty of Marie's approach is its flexibility; different situations call for different strategies, and you're encouraged to discover what works uniquely for you.Perhaps most reassuringly, Marie reminds us that regulation doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. Sometimes the simplest techniques—singing loudly in your car, taking three deep breaths, or simply shaking out your hands—are exactly what your nervous system needs. In a world where so much feels out of control, these tools offer a path back to feeling grounded in your own body and present in your own life.Visit mariesloancounseling.com to access the full regulation pyramid resource mentioned in this episode and discover which techniques might work best for you. This podcast is meant to be a resource for the general public, as well as fellow therapists/psychologists. In this encore episode, we detail the intestinal mycobiome and the mechanisms by which beneficial microbes aid in regulating opportunistic fungal species: Candida albicans. We discuss Candida overgrowth virulence and how disruptions in microbial balance, immune function, and epithelial integrity impact Candida's pathogenicity. Additionally, we discuss the role of mast cells in the lamina propria, their involvement in mucosal immunity, and how Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) can be exacerbated by fungal dysbiosis / microbial imbalances.Topics: 1. Introduction - The intestinal mycobiome and its role in intestinal health. - Regulating populations of opportunistic fungal species like Candida albicans.- Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) intro. 2. Structure of the Intestinal Barrier- The microbiome and mucus layer: microbes, mucins, antimicrobial peptides, sIgA.- The epithelial monolayer: enterocytes, goblet cells, Paneth cells, enteroendocrine cells…- Tight junction proteins and paracellular transport.- The lamina propria beneath the epithelium: immune cells and more. 3. Candida's Pathogenicity and Barrier Disruption- Exists primarily in its yeast form, regulated by microbial competition, host immune defenses, antifungal peptides. - Secretory IgA (sIgA) and immune surveillance mechanisms help regulate fungal populations. - Chronic stress, immune suppression, and dysbiosis can deplete sIgA, increasing susceptibility to Candida proliferation. - Environmental triggers such as immune suppression, microbial depletion, inflammatory cytokines.- Yeast-to-hyphal transition, deeper tissue invasion. - Secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs), phospholipases, candidalysin: epithelial damage.- Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and overgrowth detection. 4. Impact of Beneficial Bacteria on Candida Overgrowth - Beneficial bacteria compete with Candida for nutrients and epithelial adhesion sites. - Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by beneficial bacteria.- Depletion of beneficial bacteria removes ecological resistance, allowing Candida to proliferate unchecked. 5. Mast Cells in the Lamina Propria and Their Role in Intestinal Immunity- Mast cell location - Upon activation, mast cells release histamine, cytokines, proteases, and more that regulate gut immune responses. - Histamine can increase gut permeability and modulate local immune activation. - Tryptase and chymase. - Pro-inflammatory cytokines. 6. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) - Mast cell hyperactivation.- Environmental triggers, toxins, chronic infections, and stress. - Candida overgrowth and mast cell activation.- Addressing microbial imbalances and reducing the body's total microbial, chemical, and toxin burden.- A diverse microbiome. 7. Conclusion- Candida overgrowth and regulation via immune defenses and beneficial bacterial competition.- MCAS, root cause approach.Get Chloe's Book Today! Welcome to the Leading Edge in Emotionally Focused Therapy, hosted by Drs. James Hawkins, Ph.D., LPC, and Ryan Rana, Ph.D., LMFT, LPC—Renowned ICEEFT Therapists, Supervisors, and Trainers. We're thrilled to have you with us. We believe this podcast, a valuable resource, will empower you to push the boundaries in your work, helping individuals and couples connect more deeply with themselves and each other. Overview and Themes: This podcast episode is the finale of the "Resistant Client Series," focusing on how therapists can transform client resistance into opportunities for deeper emotional connection and healing. Main Themes: 1. Understanding Resistance as Protective Behavior - Resistance isn't a problem to eliminate, but a weight-bearing mechanism protecting relationship dynamics - Every resistant stance has an attachment significance - Clients aren't being difficult; they're managing deep emotional fears 2. Theory of Change in EFT - Replace resistance with corrective emotional experiences - Help clients make clear emotional signals - Enable partners to provide compassionate comfort - Support clients in truly receiving and embodying that comfort 3. Clinical Wisdom - Don't lose hope with challenging clients - Trust the attachment map - Be intentional about vulnerability in therapeutic interventions - Focus on helping clients understand their own emotional experiences Closing Summary: In the intricate dance of human connection, resistance is not an obstacle, but a doorway. Each defensive stance whispers a profound story of fear, longing, and the desperate hope to be truly seen and loved. As therapists, our sacred work is not to dismantle these protective walls, but to gently illuminate the tender heart beating behind them. We are architects of hope, helping couples rediscover the language of vulnerability, transforming cycles of pain into rhythms of connection. Every moment of resistance carries within it the seed of healing - waiting to be understood, honored, and transformed. Keep pushing the leading edge. Keep believing in love's remarkable capacity to heal. Upcoming events, if you would like to train with James or Ryan… You can do a joint Core Skills (Colorado) with Lisa J. Do you speak to yourself the way you speak to a friend? In this episode, you'll be invited to gently explore the way you treat yourself—especially during moments of failure, doubt, or pressure. It's a powerful reminder that self-compassion is not weakness; it's wisdom in action. The conversation centers around the contrast between self-criticism and self-kindness, especially for teachers, facilitators, or anyone in a leadership role. You'll learn how the voice of the inner critic often disguises itself as motivation, but usually leads to burnout, disconnection, or shame. Instead, the episode highlights self-kindness as a skill—a grounded, conscious act that fuels resilience and real presence. From a yogic lens, this is the practice of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Svadhyaya (self-study). From a neuroscience view, it's about regulating your nervous system to create safety and clarity. And from a practical level, it's about building a relationship with yourself that is rooted in respect, care, and steady truth. This episode will leave you reflecting on how you lead, love, and live—from within.Episode Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:01:44 Self-Criticism vs Self-Kindness00:04:16 Ahimsa and the Inner Voice00:06:48 Inner Punishment vs Inner Presence00:08:58 Leadership Through Self-Compassion00:11:07 Svadhyaya and Regulating the Nervous System00:13:35 Presence Over Perfection00:16:07 Leading from Self-Kindness00:18:44 Breath and Mantra Practice00:21:04 Reflective Prompts and Closing-------—-------—-

How the United States' regulation of broadband pipelines, digital platforms, and data—together understood as “the cloud”—has eroded civil liberties, democratic principles, and the foundation of the public interest over the past century. Cloud Policy: A History of Regulating Pipelines, Platforms, and Data (MIT Press, 2024) is a policy history that chronicles how the past century of regulating media infrastructure in the United States has eroded global civil liberties as well as democratic principles and the foundation of the public interest. Jennifer Holt explores the long arc of regulating broadband pipelines, digital platforms, and the data centers that serve as the cloud's storage facilities—an evolution that is connected to the development of nineteenth- and twentieth-century media and networks, including railroads, highways, telephony, radio, and television. In the process, Cloud Policy unearths the lasting inscriptions of policy written for an analog era and markets that no longer exist on the contemporary governance of digital cloud infrastructure.Cloud Policy brings together numerous perspectives that have thus far remained largely siloed in their respective fields of law, policy, economics, and media studies. The resulting interdisciplinary argument reveals a properly scaled view of the massive challenge facing policymakers today. Holt also addresses the evolving role of the state in the regulation of global cloud infrastructure and the growing influence of corporate gatekeepers and private sector self-governance. Cloud policy's trajectory, as Holt explains, has enacted a transformation in the cultural valuation of infrastructure as civic good, turning it into a tool of commercial profit generation. Despite these current predicaments, the book's historical lens ultimately helps the reader to envision restorative interventions and new forms of activism to create a more equitable future for infrastructure policy. A member of the New York State Assembly has proposals for how to regulate artificial intelligence. The AI Training Data Transparency Act would require AI firms to make their safety testing protocols visible, and it would protect whistleblowers who call attention to AI dangers. Is it enough? The Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act would require developers to meet certain safety and security requirements before launching their platforms. Our guests include the Assemblymember who has introduced the legislation. Our guests: Assemblymember Alex Bores, District 73 Max Irwin, founder of Max.io

Most entrepreneurs want exponential growth. Few pause long enough to ask what's quietly getting in the way. In this episode, Alex Raymond shares what's ahead for the Conscious Entrepreneur Summit, happening May 28th and 29th in Boulder, Colorado. This is the one event built entirely around the well-being of entrepreneurs, and it's designed for those who are serious about scaling both their business and their inner capacity to lead. Sarah Lockwood, the founder of HiveCast and longtime member of the community, joins Alex to ask the questions many potential attendees are already thinking. They walk through what to expect, from the small, curated outdoor workshop with Dr. Benjamin Hardy to the larger summit day packed with speakers like Michael Freeman, Brad Feld, and Rachel Romer. The lineup covers both the internal and external work of growth, with plenty of space for connection, reflection, and actual momentum. Are your cravings trying to tell you something deeper than hunger? In this episode, I'm sharing a different perspective on dieting—one that goes way beyond just calories and restriction. I dive into the emotional and psychological side of things—because let's be real, it's not just about what we eat, but why we eat.I talk about how our emotional state can trigger things like cravings, binge eating, or that constant on-again, off-again cycle with food. This isn't just about willpower—it's about what's going on in our nervous system. And if we don't feel emotionally safe, our body stays stuck in Protection Mode, making it really hard to lose weight or feel truly well.I explain the difference between being in “Protection Mode” vs. “Safety Mode.” When we're stuck in Protection Mode—usually because of stress, old wounds, or even toxic environments—our bodies hold on to weight. But when we feel safe, emotionally and physically, our body can finally relax and start releasing.Topics Covered:Redefining Diet to Regulate Emotions and Nervous SystemShifting From Protection Mode to Safety Mode for Weight ReleaseAuditing Diet and Environment to Combat Emotional EatingAuditing Your Environment for Emotional Well-BeingTransforming Cravings by Regulating the Nervous SystemEmbracing New Approaches with Kindness and CuriosityIf you've ever felt like food has power over you, I hope this conversation brings you comfort and inspiration. You're not alone, and healing is possible. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right—eating well, exercising, pushing yourself—but your body just won't let go of fat, there's a reason.Your nervous system is either in Protection Mode (fight-or-flight) or Safety Mode (rest-and-digest)—and fat release only happens in Safety Mode. But if your body feels unsafe? It clings to fat, slows metabolism, and even triggers binge eating and self-sabotage.Think about it. You go through stress, and suddenly you're reaching for food you swore you wouldn't touch. You're not weak—it's biology. When your body is in survival mode, it's wired to conserve energy and seek quick fuel. That's why unwanted eating behaviors feel so out of control sometimes. But here's the kicker: fat loss isn't just about burning calories—it's about making your body feel safe enough to let go.So the real question is—are you pushing your body into Protection Mode without even realizing it? Because if you are, no amount of dieting or exercise is going to override survival mode. It's time to stop fighting your body and start working with it.So if you're ready to Break Free from Emotional and Binge Eating, download my FREE eBook: Calm the Craving: 7 Steps to Break the Emotional and Binge Eating Battle. In this guide, you'll learn how to regulate your nervous system to eliminate cravings, make peace with food, and allow the weight to naturally release itself.Download your free copy here: www.sherryshaban.com/calmYou deserve to experience food freedom, I can't wait to see you inside!Listen to more episodes at www.makepeacewithfood.com/podcast or subscribe to me on Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube so you never miss an episode!Join my Facebook Community here: www.myfoodfreedomlifestyle.comWork with me: www.sherryshaban.com/transformWant to go deeper? Welcome to episode #983 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Matthew Weinzierl is not just thinking about the future of the economy - he's thinking about the economy of the final frontier. As a professor at Harvard Business School and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Matt brings the analytical rigor of economic policy to a space sector that's shifting from sci-fi to IPO. In our conversation, we unpack the big thesis behind his new book Space To Grow - Unlocking The Final Economic Frontier(co-authored with Mehak Sarang Rousseau), which reframes space as something more than spectacle or science - it's a place where real economic value is being created right now. This isn't about day trips to orbit or Mars hotels (not yet). It's about the role of market forces, national security, broadband access, sustainability, microgravity manufacturing, and the essential debate between centralized control and decentralized innovation. Matt has built a career studying tax policy and the philosophical underpinnings of economic systems, and now he's applying that lens to a commercial space industry that's still defining its rules. We talk about SpaceX's dominance and what it means for competition, the outdated frameworks of international space law, and why economists are uniquely suited to help structure the future of space activity. We also explore the symbolic and practical value of human exploration, and how figures like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos shape the public's understanding of what's possible (and what might be hype). What makes Matt so compelling is his clarity... he doesn't get swept up in the cosmic dreams without asking who benefits, who governs, and what kind of economic system we're building in orbit and beyond. If you've been curious about the real forces shaping the space economy - and what it might mean for Earth - this episode is a must-listen. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 58:47. Growing evidence links heavy social‑media use to rising anxiety, bullying, and sextortion among kids, and state lawmakers are racing to respond. In this interview, Harvard Law School's Leah Plunkett—reporter for the Uniform Law Commission's child‑influencer act—and University of Virginia family‑law scholar Naomi Cahn examine how new statutes seek to verify age, require parental consent, and redesign feeds to curb addictive features.Plunkett and Cahn compare Florida's and Utah's sweeping under‑14 account bans with New York's pending “SAFE for Kids Act,” explore design mandates such as late‑night notification curfews, and explain why long‑standing COPPA rules leave teens largely unprotected. They unpack First Amendment and privacy challenges already moving through the courts, highlight emerging “digital Coogan” laws that safeguard child‑creator earnings, and note international moves—from Australia's proposed under‑16 ban to the U.K.'s Age‑Appropriate Design Code.(Credits: General 1.5 hrs | MCLE available to TalksOnLaw “Premium” or “Podcast” members. What does it mean to innovate with principle in a world of complexity, volatility, and accelerating change? This week, I spoke with Anu Bradford, Professor of Law, Director of European Legal Studies Center, Columbia Law School. As part of our Nordic Visionaries series, Anu brings a timely and thought-provoking perspective on the intersection of innovation, regulation, and sustainability. Known globally for her work on EU law and digital regulation, and as the author of The Brussels Effect and Digital Empires, Anu offers an insider's view on how the Nordics and Europe are navigating the fast-evolving tech landscape. Together, they explore the mounting pressure on companies to adapt to shifting political and economic forces while staying true to their foundational values. From EU regulation and AI governance to geopolitical realignment and sustainability commitments, the conversation tackles the opportunities and tradeoffs innovators must grapple with today. Anu also highlights the need for disruptive innovation that improves lives, not just profits, and calls attention to the power of Nordic leadership to set global examples through clear values, pragmatism, and social trust. Whether you are a tech founder, policymaker, or corporate leader, this episode challenges you to consider what you build and why you make it. So, how do we define meaningful innovation at this moment? And what kind of future are we shaping when we choose to balance progress with principle? Join the conversation and share your thoughts.
