The coronavirus death toll continues to rise and the world is in panic mode. The unknown and it's mode of infection scares most people. However, the unknown fuels our greatest fears. I share my personal story of how the death of my father impacted me and the work that I do. The CDC indicates that heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women regardless of race or ethnicity. Also, one person dies every 37 seconds in the U.S. This accounts for approximately 647,000 deaths a year. One of the driving forces behind heart disease is stress. Stress increase our blood pressure and leads to an onverall uneasy feeling. This in turn leads many people to overeat, use alcohol and smoke. Is there something we can do to combat stress and heart diseaes? Yes! Dr. Herbert Benson, Harvard Medical School Cardiologist created the relaxation response method. This incorporates yoga, meditation and progressive muscle relaxation. The common factor among all of these is breath control. As our amygdala sounds the alarm in our bodies when under stress, the hypothalamus trigers the SNS for flight or flight. This does not have to be in response to coming face to face with a bear. It could simply be opening your mail and seeing a high medical bill. Breathing exercisees can put you at ease and help you to not only deal with stress, but improve your health. Everyone wants to manifest a variety of conditions in their lives. Carl Jung believed that the subconscious minds create a collective unconscious. This represents history, present and future potential of humans. The basic definition of manifesting is that thoughts create things. 24: Top 5 Mistakes Life Coach Students Make

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2019 16:09

Many students assume that their life coach certification program offers everything they need to pursue their dream of starting a successful life coaching business. However, they later find out that only a portion of the information needed is provided. Yes, they may learn a few tools such as active listening and questioning techniques, but they are never provided with evaluation forms, intake forms or confidentiality forms. I hear from students in other programs who want to know what forms to use. And, my first thought is why did their program fail to provide this to them. Here's my list of the top 5 mistakes that prospective life coach students make. Mistake #5: Students never ask to see a syllabus before starting their program. This is key so they know every detail they will learn in their program. Mistake #4: Students accept that their program does not teach marketing skills. This also is puzzling. Coaches need to have the knowledge of starting, operating and marketing their business. Otherwise, it is wasted money. And, telling students to create business cards and hand out to people in line at the grocery store is NOT marketing. Students should be well equipped with how to set up a website, Facebook ad campaign, funnel and Google adwords campaigns. This is the key to a successful business. Mistake #3: Students never ask about the credentials of their instructor. Having an instructor who has only been a life coach for two years and has never taught previously, could be a sign to stay away. However, if the instructor has an advanced degree in psychology or counseling and has been a life coach for 16 years and has taught graduate level courses for 13 years, this is a smarter choice. This is because they have been in the trenches and know what life is life as a life coach and instructor. This results in a richer experience when learning. Mistake #2: Students choose a program that does not offer support post certification. Having the support of a program after obtaining your certification is key in ensuring you will be successful. Students often feel overwhelmed with the amount of information learned and have anaysis paralysis. Having assistance along the way gives you the best chance you will make the right decisions in setting up and operating your life coaching business. The alternative is that students go into Facebook life coach groups and ask for help. This is similar to the blind leading the blind. Mistake #1: The number one mistake students make when selecting a program is to choose it solely on cost. They figure that they can save x number of dollars by going to a different school over another. However, what they actually did was waste a bunch of money because they never received the training they needed to be successful. So, paying extra to ensure you receive everything you need is a wise decision. Tim Laskis, Ph.D.

Stress is a daily part of our lives. Whether it is from sitting in traffic, dealing with your boss, listening to customer complaints or pretty much anything else, you must have the skills to deal with it. If not, your mental and physical health can become negatively impacted. Stress is any physical or mental state in response to something in our environment. Our bodies react in a certain way when challenged or threatened. However, we do not have to be face to face with a bear to feel threatened and stressed. We could also be home sitting on the couch and start thinking about finances. Thoughts alone could send us into a panic. As a result, our heart rate increases, muscles tighten, breathing quickens and blood pressure sky rockets. Dr. Jennifer Haythe, co-founder of the Women’s Center for Cardiovascular Health at Columbia University stated that the key to longevity is to take care of your heart. Mood and stress have a negative impact on our hearts and could mean big problems in the long run. She suggests meditating for 20 minutes a day to keep your heart healthy. Another researcher, Dr. Benjamin Shapero, instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School teamed up with Gaelle Desbordes, a neuroscientist, to look at mindfulness medication and it’s impact on our brains. They found that FMRI’s of the brain clearly showed changes in the amygdala during and after meditation. This suggests that meditation may have lasting effects even after you are finished. I walk you through the steps for utilizing deep belly breathing during meditation. Join me in episode 23 for guided mindfulness meditation using this new skill. Today I go into detail about life coaching intakes. Basically, these are questionnaires that gather information about new clients. Some areas you need to cover include general information such as name, address, education and marital status. Also, you will ask the coaching client what their goal is for working with you. This is also an opportunity to educate the client on the coaching process. Let clients know what to expect, including your coaching model and fee’s. You also have an opportunity to build trust with your clients during the intake process. One important issue to cover is confidentiality. Confidentiality is where you keep all identifying information of your client and the work they do with you in private. You do not share this information with anyone. As a result, clients feel more at ease in working with you and they stay more engaged in the coaching process.

    17: Individual vs. Group Coaching

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2019 12:11

My students often ask me, “What is more beneficial, individual or group coaching?” My answer is, “It depends.” It depends on the client and it depends on the coach. Clients in individual sessions can often feel comfortable faster than in a group setting. They may open up and share more personal information when it is one on one with the coach. Because of this they may progress faster and reach their goals in a shorter period of time. Also, new life coaches often feel more comfortable working with clients in individual sessions over groups. They still lack confidence and are just getting up to speed on using their skills. Throw them in a group coaching environment and they panic. Some report that it is too much to keep track of. For example, running a weight loss group with 8 clients can be more work for the life coach. They have to pay attention to verbal and non-verbal language of each client and keep the group moving along at a relaxed pace. This is in contrast to only focusing on one client and one set of issues. However, I prefer running groups because they can be more powerful than individual sessions. Clients not only learn from sharing and listening to you as the coach, but they get to learn from all of the other clients in the group. Members typically form a close bond and love the process. Another benefit is that you can scale your coaching practice faster by running groups. Your time is limited and if you wanted to see 8 clients in one day for one hour each, you just spent 8 hours. This is in contrast to running one group for one hour with 8 members. You served the same amount of clients in a much shorter time. And, let’s say that you wanted to run 7 more groups with 8 members each in the same day. The result is that you served 64 clients in one day instead of 8. You get the point. The dynamics of group coaching is very powerful and with the right skills you can make a great impact with the clients that you work with. Got questions? 16: Wanting vs. Believing

When we simply WANT something we often embrace day dreaming. We think of how nice it will be to have a new house on the ocean, a lengthy vacation to Europe or to have one million dollars. However, we often do nothing to make it happen. It is just a dream and wanting it is just another way of enjoying a quick fantasy, but never believing it can come true. However, BELIEVING is a whole different level. When we believe we can have something, it brings us a step closer to whatever we desire. This may last for days or months. But, too often believer’s switch gears and go back to wanting. They may say that they were crazy for believing it. They get down and then try to push it out of their minds. If this sounds familiar, then listen closely. Go back to being a BELIEVER. But, here’s the step that you need to add. You must go one level deeper in your belief. For example, if you believe you will have a million dollars one day, you must do this. Instead of figuring it out in your current scarcity mindset. Take a moment and imagine what you feel like by already having it. Will you become confident? Will you feel more relaxed? Will you feel at ease? Then, what will you think about? What decisions do you make as someone with that money? I don’t mean what you will buy. I mean, what does your millionaire self do to make more money? Are you disciplined? Are you getting up early in the morning? How does your millionaire self take care of your body? Do you eat healthy foods? Do you exercise? Do you spend more time with your family? If yes, then start behaving in that manner. The whole point is that you must think and feel as if you have the million dollars. This is the place in your mind that you operate from. You don’t wait till you have it. You operate in an abundance mindset. You make all your decisions from that place. Then by believing and taking action from that mindset, you make your dreams come true. It’s as if you already have it which makes all the difference in making it real. If you continue to think and feel from scarcity and struggle with daily tasks, you will almost never make your dreams come true. You are who you are right now because of your current thoughts and current behavior. You cannot continue thinking, feeling and behaving as your current self to become your future self. It all has to change. Feel free to reach out to me at Tim@CoachWherever.com if you have questions. Good luck!

Anytime we struggle with personal or professional issues, we often are looking for solutions. However, what we really want is hope. Hope that it will be fine, hope that we will feel better again and hope that all will calm down. This happens in a variety of situations including personal issues, financial problems, job stress or a relationship crisis. When you go to the doctor with symptoms of the flu you are looking to get medicine. However, after the doctor says you will be fine and to take the prescribed medicine, you start to feel better before you even leave the office. How is that possible? You did not even start the medicine. It happened because you found hope. If your relationship with your spouse is a mess and you seek couples counseling, you are looking for solutions. However, what you really want is hope. Hope that things will work out and hope that you will get back to the way things were before you started having issues. Watching programs by Dr. Wayne Dyer or Joel Osteen can provide you with a sense of hope. They have a wonderful way of sharing stories and messages that give their viewers hope. But, does hope really live outside of us? Do others give us hope or do we have hope within? The answer is that hope lives within our minds. You always had hope, you just chose to bury it with negative thoughts. No one can give us hope like they can give you a $100 dollar bill. Hope is something that you have had all along. And, you can connect to it without having to search externally for it. Go back and listen to episode #02 where I discuss The Blueprint of Coach Wherever. You will learn that hope starts with your thoughts. You will learn how to control your thoughts, emotion and behavior. You are not a victim and you have the power to live a full and happy life. You do not need to depend on anyone or anything. All you need to do is learn how to control the most powerful system in your body, your mind. Too often we are distracted and stressed. We walk around like this and wonder why we never get anything done. However, there is a simple solution. First, start by taking care of your physical environment. Go into that bonus room or garage or bedroom and start organizing. Throw out anything that you have not used in a few months and simplify. We all have stuff that we don’t use and we all at times have had messy homes or cars. Take a few minutes a day and organize your physical environment. The result will not only look great, but it helps to relax your mind. When we walk around in clutter we tend to feel stressed even if we are not consciously thinking about it. Another way to declutter your mind is to limit what you watch on social media and television. If you are watching shows like Jerry Springer, you are filling your mind with trash and clutter. These types of programs result in internal stress and conflict. This is not something that you want. Also, limit what you are reading on Facebook or other online news sites. If it is negative news and conflict, you will end up feeling stressed. To relax your mind, clean up around you. This includes your house, car or garage. Also, limit what you watch on television and on social media. Garbage going into your mind usually means that you are keeping your thoughts in chaos. Doing these two things can help to declutter your mind so that you can think more clearly and feel more relaxed.

People have different ideas of what a life coach is. Sometimes it is very confusing for the general public. In this episode I layout specifically what life coaches do and what they do not do. I provide clear examples of how a life coach works with their clients and cover three main areas. This includes assisting their clients with finding a clear vision of what they want either personally or professionally. Next, life coaches help their clients develop a path for getting there. Once they have clarity in these two areas, the real work begins. This is where the client takes action and is held accountable. Accountability is extremely important in ensuring that clients do not become side lined or overwhelmed with indecisiveness. Too often we become consumers of self-development material because we want to learn the skills necessary for change. However, what typically happens is that we get analysis paralysis. Life coaches will help move you off the fence and into action. One of the biggest reasons we do not take action is because of fear. Fear of failure or fear of looking foolish is usually a big part. A life coach will support you along the way and help you to manage fear, which is usually just made up in our minds. Tony Robbins stated that FEAR stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. This is so true, and we must move fear out of the way to accomplish our personal and professional goals. With the help of a life coach you can create and achieve the life of your dreams. At the end of the episode I go into detail about our life coach certification at Coach Wherever. I discuss how we are different and what to expect in our training program. We take pride in not only learning the necessary skills for helping clients, but in developing successful coaching practices with paying clients. We also offer our graduates an opportunity to apply for administrative positions and life coach positions here at Coach Wherever. We provide life time support to all of our graduates. This is basically the study of bumps on one’s skull which tell a story about you. Sigmond freud was probably the most famous with his development of the Id, Ego and Superego.
