Den Menschen des Mittelalters machten die Baumeister der Gotik Angst. Viele glaubten, dass diese Männer mit dem Teufel paktieren, dabei waren sie streng genommen Männer der Kirche. Als Universalgenies verfügten sie über das gesamte Wissen ihrer Zeit: Baukunst, Physik, Mathematik und Chemie. Ihnen stand kein Heer von Statikern zur Verfügung, keine Computer, nicht einmal detaillierte Bauzeichnungen. Und doch schufen sie quasi im schöpferischen Alleingang Monumente, deren Bau heute Milliarden verschlingen würden. Gerade die Pioniere der Gotik wagten vieles. Getreu dem Prinzip „Versuch und Irrtum“ schufen sie Konstruktionen, deren Belastbarkeit sie nicht berechnen, sondern nur ausprobieren konnten. Das ging nicht immer gut. Viele der Baumeister bezahlten ihre Leidenschaft für die Großkirchen der Gotik mit dem Leben. Der Film porträtiert die Stars unter ihnen: Wilhelm von Sens, Vorbild für Ken Follets Figur "Tom Builder" im Weltbestseller "Die Säulen der Erde" - und Meister Gerhard, den sagenumwobenen ersten Baumeister der wohl gotischsten aller gotischen Kathedralen, des Kölner Doms.
