Gibby and Arezzi examine the first 2 games of the World Series, predict the final outcome and revisit the Daulton Varsho trade. Duane Ward is Gabbin' with Gibby to talk about the 30-year anniversary of the Jays' 1993 championship, his relationship with Tom Henke and swap too many stories to possibly list here... you'll have to listen! Then, we roast a broadcaster for backing down from a bet, and toast a player making playoff history!
Everybody's had a horrible boss before, but George Steinbrenner was the king. Despite paying Dave Winfield a record contract, he hated the man! He had him benched, refused to pay his charity the money he owed them & even payed a known mob associate $40k for dirt on him. Winfield got the last laugh though, he made the Hall of Fame while George was (temporarily) banned for life. Hear all about the toxic workplace Winfield had to deal with. Plus we remember the Dave Winfield-Nolan Ryan brawl, revile in a song about Tom Henke & talk a little Back to the Future via the MiLB Rule 5 draft. And as always, Wax Pack Heroes where we tackle a couple of packs from 1991. For 36 seasons he was the voice of the Blue Jays, along with his broadcast partner Tom Cheek and then several others until he elected to retire to lighten his load and focus more on his health. Jerry Howarth came to Toronto via Salt Lake City and Tacoma WA, a long way from California. Yet, Toronto for Jerry is home and we caught up with him today prior to his regular bridge game. Jerry sounds identical today to the old tapes you may find of him doing college football from the 1970's . More importantly, you can tell from spending just a few minutes with Jerry that he remains true to himself without wavering one bit.Jerry is personable, friendly and a pleasure to speak with. He remembers every detail as if it was yesterday always applying the lens of good family person first and then baseball second.Jerry shares his stories, thoughts and feelings about Toronto, playing in Canada vs. the United States, how he almost derailed a trade and his thoughts on how Alex Anthopolous exit was booted like a random infield grounder through Manny Lee's legs. No matter your age, you will remember fondly the voice that started every game with "Hello friends" and likely had a "There, she, goes" in it as a Blue Jay player went deep. With dire news around us, including today's grandstanding, chest thumping, bargaining by MLB Jerry will hopefully bring you back to a better time when games where, you know being played.
He’s been sent from the future to terminate batters. Tom Henke, former Blue Jay and legend in the baseball community, joins Barry and Matt to chart his journey to the bigs and beyond. From his shy beginnings in Missouri, the growth spurt that came out of nowhere and his large family, Tom opens up allowing us to see the man behind the machine. How did he achieve a 100mph fastball in an era where that was almost impossible? He tells us. His time as a Jay and his reasoning for leaving the nest are explored. Of paramount important to Tom is his role as a family man. The trio discuss the ins and outs of the Henke family and how they balanced ball and family life. The First Pitch discusses newest Blue Jay Freddie Galvis and what his acquisition means for the roster. Ask Barry Davis features chats on Galvis, Devon Travis and Ken Giles future with the Jays. Payroll is also autopsied. Raj Suppiah joins Barry in the medical room to discuss proper snow shovelling techniques. Save your back thanks to Raj. The results of the Fair or Foul Poll are Patriotic. Gahhh. All that and mounds more. GET DOWN with the Terminator.
This week, Donald, Justin, and Neal discuss the following: A look ahead to the Keighlies, Pokemon Let's Go, Donald's belligerent and numerous eShop buys on Black Friday, Toki, Smash Bros Ultimate, The Turkey Five, an act of trolling from Eiji Aounuma, WayForward as Tom Henke, and RIPieces to the Nintendo Creator's Program. Recorded November 29, and "spoiler free" refers to the Smash talk specifically.
Jays Journal Podcast - July 4. "Back in a New York minute..."The Toronto Blue Jays decided to celebrate their emancipation from unbearably horrid, one-sided baseball games by relying on a slice of good ole' fashioned fundamentals, prevailing over the Bronx Bombers this afternoon, 4-1. Without the familiar sight of televised evening diamond action, we are proud to present a worthwhile alternative to keep you entertained through the summer night. On tonight's show, host Ari Shapiro is proud to welcome two new guests to the podcast; Toronto Sun writer and producer, Josh Weinstein (@joshweinstein), along with Sporting News reporter and baseball historian, Graham Womack (@grahamdude). Josh offers us his candid thoughts on the likelihood of Devon Travis returning in 2017 (3:00), if he can ever outlive the perception of being a brittle baseball player (4:10), thoughts on how the most recent injury was caused (5:15), options for the team dealing with the rigmarole at second base (6:45), and if 81 games is enough time for the Blue Jays to be considered actual contenders (8:20).Graham takes a closer look at the changing standards of hall of fame excellence (10:01), if the shortening of Cooperstown eligibility is nothing more than a desperate effort to address steroid era guilt (12:58), will the inclusions of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens damage MLB credibility (15:30), on the politics of post-baseball campaigning for legendary players (17:41), the Tim Raines campaign and how Tom Henke narrowly missed the hall (19:15), how the Jays innovated the first "deep" bullpen in baseball (20:45), and how Charlie Sheen came to buy and sell Babe Ruth's world series ring (21:48).
In this episode of the Naz & Wally Sports Hour the guys talk to Blue Jays legend, Tom Henke and Blue Jays Hall of Famer Pat Gillick.
Episode 50 of the Jays' Nest Podcast is a good one! Not only does it share the same number as legendary Blue Jays closer, Tom Henke, it features some great discussion in what seemed like a very busy week for the Toronto Blue Jays. While not many major moves happened, there were still plenty of discussion points. We look at the latest news, we react to meeting the new GM, the state of pitching and we say goodbye to David Price. Episode 36: Dave is suffering from a lost voice (or laryngitis, as a doctor might put it), and much to the amusement of everyone he records the podcast anyway. Luckily award-winning comedian Ron Sparks is here to save the day with his stunningly realistic Tom Henke impression. Also featuring a talk with Chris Perez about his boat and a spooky ghost story.
