Mental Game Decides Outcomes: The Dodgers' calm, strategic focus on capitalizing on mistakes (e.g., Yamamoto's intentional walk) overcame the Jays' superior talent, proving that composure under pressure is the ultimate differentiator.Risk is Frequency x Severity: True risk understanding requires analyzing both how often an event occurs (frequency) and its impact (severity). This framework explains why high-severity, low-frequency risks (like product liability) are so dangerous.Restaurant Industry is a "Supply Trap": The restaurant business is inherently difficult due to low barriers to entry (high supply), no scale advantage, and high customer switching costs. Success requires a habit-forming model (e.g., Starbucks) or a strong brand for milestone events (e.g., The Keg).Ethics Vary by Influence: Warren Buffett's distinction between owning stock (no control) and owning a company outright (directing activities) highlights that ethical responsibility is tied to one's level of influence. The Dodgers' World Series win over the Blue Jays was attributed to their superior mental game and composure under pressure.Key Play Analysis (Game 7):Context: Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, runner on 2nd.Yamamoto's Intentional Walk: Yamamoto walked the hot-hitting Addison Barger on 4 pitches to face the slower-running Alejandro Kirk.Rationale: This strategic move increased the probability of a double play, as a home run's severity (game over) was the same regardless of runners on base.Outcome: Kirk hit a broken-bat grounder, resulting in a game-ending double play.Jays' Critical Mistakes:Game 6: Addison Barger was picked off 2nd base.Game 7: IKF took too small a lead on 3rd base, preventing him from scoring on a wild throw.Game 7: Kirk's broken bat on the final play. The World Series analysis led to a discussion on understanding risk in business.Defining Risk Understanding: True understanding goes beyond stating risks; it requires explaining how to mitigate them and living with the downside.Insurance Industry Model:Reported Claims: Known losses with an estimated cost.IBNR (Incurred But Not Reported) Claims: Losses that have occurred but are not yet known. Insurers must reserve for both.Frequency vs. Severity Framework:Frequency: How often an event occurs.Severity: The impact of that event.Example: A broken bat is a low-frequency event, but its severity was game-ending in Game 7.Restaurant Industry Risk Analysis:High Supply: Low barriers to entry (one location is minimum viable scale).Low Switching Costs: Customers are incentivized to try new places.Commodity Costs: Food expenses are subject to volatile commodity prices.Success Factors:Habit Formation: Models that allow solo dining (e.g., Starbucks) build daily habits.Strong Brand: A clear identity for specific occasions (e.g., The Keg for anniversaries). The discussion shifted to Warren Buffett's ethical investing philosophy.Buffett's Stance: He would buy stock in a tobacco company (minority ownership) but would not own one outright.Rationale: Ethical responsibility is tied to influence. Owning stock provides no control, but outright ownership means directing activities.Charlie Munger's View: Criticized the cultural trend of pursuing any profitable activity that is not illegal, arguing that some actions are "beneath us."

Steve and Devin went live for Episode 113 as the World Series reached Los Angeles with the series tied 1–1. Through two games, it's been everything you'd expect from two balanced, well-prepared teams. Toronto took Game 1 by sticking to their plan — long at-bats, traffic on the bases, and patience that wore Blake Snell down early. Addison Barger's pinch-hit grand slam, the first in World Series history, broke the game open and set the tone for how the Blue Jays want to play. The Dodgers answered in Game 2 behind Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw a complete game while allowing just one run and no walks. His command and tempo completely reset the series before it shifts to Dodger Stadium. Now it's 1–1, and both teams have shown what they do best. Toronto creates pressure and forces mistakes, while Los Angeles controls pace and leans on execution. The rest of the series will come down to which approach holds up longer. Steve and Devin also discussed Tony Vitello leaving Tennessee to manage the Giants, Bryce Harper's frustration with trade speculation, and Rob Manfred's comments on MLB's ongoing gambling investigations. The fans also sent a firm message to Shohei Ohtani when he came to bat in the ninth inning, chanting, "We don't need you!" American League Championship Series Game Seven RecapSeattle Mariners @ Toronto Blue JaysIt all comes down to this. Game Seven. One team looking for their first AL Pennant in 32 years. The other looking for their first pennant ever. The Blue Jays survived game six thanks to a gutsy outing from youngster Trey Yesavage, as well as homers from Addison Barger and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. Manager John Schneider will hand the ball  to former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber, who delivered a strong start in game three. Expect the leash to be short, and for everyone outside of Yesavage to be available. On the offensive side, do not be shocked if postseason legend George Springer makes a mark, as he often has in previous game sevens. The Mariners have never been closer to a World Series, but they missed their first opportunity to advance. And since they didn't take care of business in Seattle, this is their last shot. Rodríguez, Raleigh, Naylor, and Suárez have done their part at the plate, but the rest of the lineup has practically been nonexistent in this series. If they want to close this series out, the big bats will need some help. Despite getting shelled in game three, George Kirby will take the mound in a winner-take-all game, as he did against Detroit in the ALDS. It will be his first ever playoff start on the road, which may cause some jitters for the righty. Manager Dan Wilson has a lot of options out of the bullpen; however, they've been heavily taxed in the postseason so far. Gabe Speier and Eduard Bazardo have been used in nearly every game, and their effectiveness has waned. The big question is how many outs can Andrés Muñoz get, and will the Mariners have a lead when he enters?Game Seven, here we go!Seattle Radio KIRO - Rick Rizzs and Aaron GoldsmithToronto Radio SN590 - Ben Shulman and Chris LerouxAudio clips from MLB.tvAs always, thank you to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more.Catch you next time,P.C.O.

Then, Jeff and Kevin project how John Schneider will manage the bullpen with the season on the line, share expectations for Shane Bieber, and look at the two teams' lineups. Later, Jays Central analyst Madison Shipman stops by (27:45) to weigh in on Addison Barger's adjustment at the plate, the impact of George Springer's knee injury, the plan for Jeff Hoffman after a busy Game 6, the Mariners' mental mistakes, and the importance of a strong start. We are setting the tone for one of the biggest sports days ever for Seattle sports fans.. Hockey at 4, Baseball at 5 and Football at 7, oh wow! 3 errors and a stinker of an outing for Gilbert, plus base-running errors… it was sloppy for the Mariners in Toronto last night. We haven't seen a good performance from our starting pitchers outside of Bryce Miller, but credit has to be given to Toronto; they do the little things. They put the ball in play…which is a great game plan! We should do that! Game 7 is tonight and if there's any doubt that George Kirby is the Mariners' guy, that's gone now as he gets the start tonight in Toronto. And, as If that's not enough, the Seahawks host the Texans in MNF and a win is necessary to keep pace in the NFC West. :30- Mariners Morning After It was just a bad night for the Mariners, a very bad night, in fact the score made the game look closer than it was as the Mariners hit into two double plays with the bases loaded, committed errors and just weren't sharp. Is this just what this team does though? Here we are with our backs up against the wall yet again, so can the M's get it done tonight? :45- There were some impressive and wild performances in the NFL yesterday! We grab a turkey sandwich and check the scoreboard. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Guest: Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw   Game Four of the American League championship series is going to go down in Blue Jays history because of one singular moment – John Schneider's mound visit in the fifth inning in which Max Scherzer basically barked his manager off the mound.   In this playoff bonus episode of Deep Left Field, we'll break down that "conversation" for you, and hear from both Scherzer and Schneider, as well as a couple of innocent bystanders.   Outside of that moment, the win for the Jays was massive. Scherzer's unexpected performance on the mound, another huge hit from Andres Gimenez, Addison Barger's incredible performance in right field in a game he expected to start at third base, and the Jays are back on even footing in a series that looked lost when they hopped on the plane to Seattle.   Myles Straw joins us to talk about that mound moment as well as the resilience of this team that we've seen all season long and, as always, we'll open up the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca.

They discuss the seismic shift in series momentum, now fully believing the "rolling" Yankees will win Game 4 and the series, and question whether the Blue Jays have the mental fortitude to recover from such a catastrophic collapse.
