Pirates Finally Give Their Pitchers Support

The Pirates finally gave their pitching staff some support. After scoring just three runs over the first two games of the series, Pittsburgh broke through for eight runs and 13 hits in an 8-6 win over the Rockies to avoid a sweep in Colorado. Nick Gonzales got the offense rolling with a two-run homer, Bryan Reynolds continued his outstanding June with a three-run blast, and contributions came throughout the lineup from Jake Mangum, Jared Triolo, Tyler Callihan, and Spencer Horwitz. Jared Jones exited after three innings when a comebacker struck his elbow, but the bullpen initially answered the call. Yohan Ramirez and Evan Sisk combined for four scoreless innings before Dennis Santana and Gregory Soto made things much more interesting late. What looked like an easy win quickly became a nail-biter before the Pirates finally closed it out. Tyler and Doug break down the offensive breakout, Reynolds' big day, Jones' injury scare, the strong performances from Ramirez and Sisk, and another bullpen adventure that nearly turned a comfortable win into disaster. The Pirates pulled off one of their best wins of the season, overcoming Shohei Ohtani and a 6-1 deficit against the Dodgers behind Tyler Callihan's first two Major League home runs. But the bigger story is Oneil Cruz. Alex Stumpf breaks down Cruz landing on the injured list with a fracture, why the reported 4-6 week timeline may not be as simple as it sounds, and how big of a loss this is for a Pirates offense that has relied heavily on his power, speed and on-base ability. With Cruz out, the Pirates now have real questions in center field. Can Jake Mangum hold it down? Does Jhostynxon Garcia get another shot? Could Esmerlyn Valdez force his way back up with the bat? And how much more can the Pirates realistically ask from Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn, Bryan Reynolds and Spencer Horwitz? This episode of OffBeat looks at why there is no easy replacement for Oneil Cruz and why the Pirates' postseason push just got much tougher. The Pirates were supposed to be built around pitching, but through early June, it has been the offense carrying them. Another loss for the Pirates last night sends them to 4 consecutive L's. Was it another controversial move by Don Kelly to take out Mitch Keller for Evan Sisk, which immediately led to the Cardinals taking the lead. Chris defended Kelly because the long history of baseball would tell you to take Keller out when he did – not just the new wave of analytics. Sisk has been great and Keller didn't have a great history against Nolan Gorman. Kelly hasn't always pushed the right buttons, but the bullpen occasionally has to do its job. 6 runs in 9 innings should be enough. Spencer Horwitz had a clutch hit to get them to extras. Marcell Ozuna had a very slow double-play groundout. How much of this do fans put on Don Kelly? A caller had us recollecting a legendary pro wrestling promo.

NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson from CBS Sports joined the show. How could things break for the Steelers next Thursday in the 1st round of the NFL Draft? Ryan doesn't expect more than 3 WRs to be off the board, with the top guys like Carnell Tate and Makai Lemon as the only obvious ones. Ryan would not be stunned if the Steelers trade back into the 1st round if Ty Simpson is still on the board at the end of the night. What do some of these other offensive linemen look like that could be late risers before next Thursday? Ryan believes it could be injuries that push Jordyn Tyson down the board, who may be the best WR in the draft otherwise. Ryan said Jermod McCoy could be a name at 21 that attracts the Steelers. Taylen Green is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft class, but what is his value as a great athlete that can't play QB all that well? Ryan said if you need to ask if any of these QBs are better than Will Howard then you probably shouldn't draft one. Ioane feels like a Ravens pick at 14, but he could slip to the Steelers. Episode 126 of Tablesetters breaks down a stretch of offseason moves that didn't rely on shock value, but clearly revealed how several teams are positioning themselves for 2026. We open with Tatsuya Imai nearing the end of his MLB posting window with a January 2 deadline and, by his own admission, far less clarity than expected. Despite an elite résumé in Japan and interest from multiple clubs, firm offers have yet to materialize. We examine why interest hasn't translated into action, which teams remain involved, the importance of family and contract structure in his decision, and what it means if Imai ultimately returns to Seibu. From there, we move to Baltimore, where the Orioles re-sign Zach Eflin on a one-year deal. We break down what Eflin realistically provides coming off an injury-filled season, where he fits alongside Kyle Bradish, Trevor Rogers, and Shane Baz, and why this move stabilizes the rotation without removing the Orioles from the frontline starter market. The Athletics make their clearest long-term statement by locking up Tyler Soderstrom. We dig into how his extension reshapes the lineup, why his move to left field mattered after Nick Kurtz's arrival, and how a core featuring Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, Lawrence Butler, Shea Langeliers, Jacob Wilson, and Jeff McNeil gives the A's one of the deeper young offenses in the league as they build toward Las Vegas. Cincinnati's pivot away from the Luis Robert trade market brings the bullpen into focus. We break down the additions of JJ Bleday and Dane Myers, the pitching depth lost along the way, and why the Reds' roster decisions align with Nick Krall's stated priority of fixing a relief group that quietly became one of the team's biggest concerns. We close the Meat of the Order in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates sign Ryan O'Hearn to the largest free-agent position-player deal in franchise history. We discuss why O'Hearn fits PNC Park, how he complements Spencer Horwitz and Brandon Lowe, and why Pittsburgh's recent aggression has created legitimate momentum — including growing buzz around Kazuma Okamoto. Steve and Devin connect the dots across international markets, roster math, and team-building philosophy, focusing less on headlines and more on what these moves tell us about how clubs believe games will be won next season. ⚾️ Deadlines approaching, cores taking shape, and priorities becoming clear.

The father-son team of Dan and Ben Shulman will be calling the Jays' broadcasts; macher Mark Shapiro sits as team president and CEO; two of the biggest celebrity fans include Eugene Levy and Geddy Lee; and at least two rabbis—one in Toronto, the other in L.A.—have engaged in a friendly wager over the outcome. Menschwarmers co-hosts Gabe Pulver and James Hirsh dig into all this as the two lifelong Jays fans get ready for Game 1 on Friday night. After that, Gabe sits down with soccer journalist and broadcaster David Gass (co-host of the Kickback Committee podcast), who explains all the chaos of the last week involving Israeli soccer teams, including Birmingham's decision to ban fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv team and a subsequent called-off match between Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv. Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! Under the glaring lights of Great American Ball Park, the Cincinnati Reds' playoff dreams flickered and faded in the cruel twilight of extra innings. On September 24, 2025, a fired-up crowd of 30,725 watched in stunned silence as the Pittsburgh Pirates snatched a 4-3 victory in the 11th, delivering a dagger to Cincinnati's NL wild-card hopes. Tied with Arizona and just one game behind the Mets entering the night, the Reds now stare at a precarious half-game deficit with only five contests left—a loss that feels like the backbreaker in a season of tantalizing what-ifs. The evening began as a pitcher's duel for the ages, pitting Reds ace Hunter Greene against Pirates phenom Paul Skenes, the NL Cy Young frontrunner. Greene, battling for his 8th win, scattered five hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs while fanning seven. But Skenes was untouchable, surrendering just four hits in six scoreless frames, whiffing seven and etching his name in franchise lore with his 211th strikeout—a Pirates record for a righty. Pittsburgh scratched out a 2-0 lead in the second on Bryan Reynolds' RBI single and Oneil Cruz's sacrifice fly, quieting the home faithful. Hope ignited in the eighth. Down 2-0, Noelvi Marte unleashed chaos with his first career inside-the-park homer, a liner off the wall that caromed wildly into left-center, allowing him to circle the bases untouched. The GABP erupted. Then, in the ninth, Tyler Stephenson crushed a solo shot off closer Dennis Santana, knotting it at 2-2 and forcing extras. "Stephenson's blast was pure adrenaline," Reds manager Terry Francona said postgame. "We had momentum." But baseball's heartless script twisted in the 10th. Jack Suwinski's RBI double plated the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Pirates edge. The Reds clawed back on Gavin Lux's sacrifice fly, tying it once more at 3-3. Agony peaked in the 11th: Spencer Horwitz's leadoff double scored Reynolds—his third run of the night—for a 4-3 lead. Cincinnati loaded the bases with two outs, hearts pounding, only for Marte to ground into a momentum-crushing force out against Yohan Ramirez. Final out. Ballgame over.
