This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads review Giant, the Prince Naseem Hamed biopic starring Amir El-Masry as Naz and Pierce Brosnan as legendary Sheffield trainer Brendan Ingle. It is a boxing film, a mentor-protégé story, a study of fame and arrogance, and a surprisingly knotty argument about whether loyalty, recognition and money can ever stay clean once a child prodigy becomes a multi-million-pound champion.The episode opens with Reegs still absent in French France, which means no clever intro but plenty of warnings about swears and spoilers. Dan has watched classic film noir Laura and revisited Universal Soldier for the Midweeker, Cris has been watching Pierce Brosnan in western series The Son alongside some nostalgic X-Men '97, and Sidey has been back into Barry while also sampling a Netflix serial-killer thriller involving De Niro and missing boys. There is also football, DIY, paint guns, teal walls and the sort of domestic detail that proves cinema podcasting is mostly glamour.For Top 5 Giants, the dads go suitably massive. Dan starts with The Iron Giant and the animated BFG, while Cris brings in Romanian basketball player Gheorghe Mureșan via Billy Crystal's My Giant, then stretches the theme through the MonsterVerse, The Odyssey, Leprechaun 4: In Space and Rush Hour 3. Sidey nominates Fezzik from The Princess Bride, They Might Be Giants, The The's “Giant”, Game of Thrones' actual giants and finally the Giant from Twin Peaks, giving him another chance to declare David Lynch's nightmare television more or less untouchable. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Riding Giants and several real-life giants also get thrown into the oversized mix.The main review focuses on Giant as a story about two men rather than one. Prince Naseem is obviously the famous fighter, but the film arguably belongs just as much to Brendan Ingle, whose Sheffield gym gives young lads discipline, community and a way to redirect anger. The dads talk through the early scenes: Brendan spotting young Naz's footwork, taking him into the gym, making new boys sing before they fight, teaching movement before punching, and helping him deal with racist abuse in an environment where National Front attitudes are never far from the surface.As Naz rises, the film follows the familiar sports-biopic path of talent, training, showmanship and success, but the more interesting material comes from the relationship slowly cracking. Brendan nurtures Naz's cockiness because it fuels the fighter, but that same confidence becomes harder to control once promoters, sponsorships, family influence and huge money arrive. Frank Warren sees the commercial value of Naz's brash persona, the family starts questioning Brendan's cut, and the childhood handshake deal over 25% becomes the moral fault line of the film.Sidey and Dan both find that argument more complicated than the film first appears to suggest. Brendan clearly changes Naz's life, puts the money back into the gym, builds champions and cares deeply about the boy he trained from childhood. At the same time, agreeing a huge percentage with a 12-year-old is uncomfortable, however much both of them believed in the dream. The imagined reconciliation scene near the end gives the film its strongest emotional beat, because it lets Naz say he was a child and Brendan say he gave everything. The sting is that, in real life, they never properly reconciled.The performances get the strongest praise. Pierce Brosnan is very good as Brendan Ingle, and the various actors playing Naseem — especially Amir El-Masry as the adult Naz — capture the movement, swagger and showboating well. The fight scenes are convincing, the Sheffield material gives the story texture, and the film does enough with a modest-feeling British production to stay watchable throughout.The verdict is positive but measured. Sidey thinks it is pretty paint-by-numbers and admits he was never a huge fan of Naseem's arrogance, though he respects the story and really likes the performances. Dan enjoys the sports-movie structure and the tragic mentor-student angle, but does not think the film quite lands a knockout blow. Cris had not seen it in time for recording, but the discussion leaves the film sounding like one he would still watch. Esta semana, na Guiné-Bissau, o partido de oposição PAIGC apelou ao boicote ao referendo à Constituição, que será votado a 30 de Agosto. Em São Tomé e Príncipe, o caos está instalado dentro do Supremo Tribunal após divergência internas. E em Angola, a UNITA, apresentou uma queixa-crime contra o governador e o comandante da Polícia Nacional no Uíge, na sequencia dos desacatos de 8 de agosto entre as forças da policia e os militantes do maior partido da oposição.  Na Guiné-Bissau, o voto do referendo à nova Constituição está-se a aproximar, sendo previsto para o dia 30 de agosto. Esta nova Constituição foi apresentada pelo Governo de transição e traz mudanças profundas na estrutura do Estado. Esta prevê a redução dos poderes do Parlamento, que passa de 102 para 61 deputados, enquanto o papel do Presidente é reforçado, com o chefe de Estado a passar a presidir o Conselho de Ministros. Na quinta-feira, em entrevista à RFI, Nelson Moreira, segundo vice-presidente do Conselho Nacional de Transição, disse que a nova Constituição para clarificar a distribuição de competências entre os órgãos de soberania.   O futuro da Guiné-Bissau e do seu povo passa por esse processo. Estamos a falar de quase cinco décadas de aplicação de uma Constituição. Ao longo desse tempo todo, não obstante dos problemas da Guiné-Bissau serem identificados, os parceiros de desenvolvimento da Guiné-Bissau apontaram que a causa da instabilidade na Guiné deve-se ao seu texto fundamental, que é a Constituição. Felizmente, através do Alto Comando Militar foi possível tornar esse sonho uma realidade.    O segundo vice-presidente do CNT defendeu também  a legitimidade do processo conduzido pelas autoridades de transição.    Estamos a falar de novas autoridades que foram instituídas através da Carta Política de Transição.  A Carta Política de Transição suspendeu, em parte, a nossa Constituição, sobretudo no que diz respeito aos órgãos políticos e titulares de órgãos políticos.  O Conselho Nacional de Transição tem legitimidade porque é o órgão que passou a substituir a Assembleia no que diz respeito a todas as competências da Assembleia Nacional Popular.   Mas é um órgão que não sai de um acto eleitoral, é um órgão que sai de um golpe de Estado militar. Essa questão de dizer um golpe de Estado, depende. Se perguntar a outras pessoas vão dizer que não, que isso não é golpe de Estado. Isso é um conflito político-militar. Já o PAIGC, esta quarta-feira, apelou ao boicote ao referendo à Constituição. Muniro Conté, porta-voz do partido histórico guineense, denunciou uma tentativa de se legitimar uma nova lei fundamental, dizendo que este processo está a ser feito à revelia da vontade popular e sem respeito pelas regras de um Estado de direito democrático.   Nós achamos que não vale a pena participar num processo em que os partidos políticos foram excluídos liminarmente. E todo o processo de preparação do referendo dos partidos políticos não foram tidos nem achados. E, para além de nós termos constatado vícios e irregularidades. Por exemplo, com a publicação do boletins oficiais com o mesmo número de publicação. Tratando-se de um acto eleitoral, os mecanismos existentes em cascata para a reclamação junto das mesas foram eliminados através da exclusão dos partidos políticos das entidades da sociedade civil, que podiam supostamente estar ali para fiscalizar todo o processo. Então, sendo um processo em que o Conselho Nacional de Transição, o Governo e o próprio representante do Presidente da República de Transição são os únicos com o poder de fiscalização... Então, nós achamos que não podemos participar nesse processo e apelamos ao boicote das nossas estruturas, tratando-se de um processo viciado com irregularidades e que não tem qualquer legitimidade, acabando mesmo por ser um prolongamento do golpe de Estado que ocorreu no dia 26 de Novembro de 2025. Em São Tomé e Príncipe, está instalada a crise no Tribunal Constitucional após divergências virem ao público entre o Presidente e o Vice-Presidente. Este órgão esteve também recentemente no centro de uma polémica com o Supremo Tribunal de Justiça. O relato é de Maximino Carlos, o nosso correspondente.   O Tribunal Constitucional está mergulhado numa nova crise interna, desta vez envolvendo o seu presidente, Artur Vera Cruz, e o vice-presidente, Jonas Gentil.  O conflito tornou-se público depois de Jonas Gentil solicitar ao Procurador-Geral da República um parecer jurídico, com carácter de urgência, sobre a legalidade dos procedimentos adotados na distribuição de processos dentro do Tribunal Constitucional  Jonas Gentil, pretende um parecer sobre violações no seu entender da constituição e da lei orgânica e demais instrumentos aplicáveis ao seu funcionamento do referido Tribunal. Cabe ao Ministério Público desencadear a investigação que poderá desencadear em outros procedimentos. A dimensão da crise é maior porque o Tribunal Constitucional ocupa uma posição central no sistema de Justiça são-tomense. As suas decisões podem ter consequências diretas sobre processos políticos, eleitorais e sobre a relação entre os diferentes órgãos de soberania.    Em Angola, a UNITA apresentou uma queixa-crime, esta quinta-feira, contra o governador e o comandante da Polícia Nacional no Uíge, na sequência dos desacatos de 8 de Agosto do Uíge entre a polícia e os militantes do maior partido da oposição, que celebravam a data do nascimento do seu fundador, Jonas Savimbi.  O segundo-comandante-geral da Polícia Nacional, Orlando Bernardo, responsabilizou a UNITA, condenando também o alegado aproveitamento político decorrente da intervenção policial, depois de sete partidos de oposição terem criado uma plataforma para combater intolerância política, na quinta-feira. Na sequência da aglomeração de militantes e apoiantes de uma formação política num local não autorizado pelas autoridades administrativas, situação que havia sido comunicada em tempo oportuno aos responsáveis da referida formação política, a Polícia Nacional foi chamada a intervir no âmbito das suas atribuições de manutenção da ordem e tranquilidade pública. Uma ocorrência policial não deve ser  julgada como base em narrativas políticas, mas a partir dos factos das circunstâncias concretas em que ocorrem e do quadro legal aplicável. Já a vice-presidente da UNITA, Arlete Chimbinda, acusou a Polícia Nacional de ter sido instrumentalizada para supostamente atacar militantes do maior partido da oposição, anunciando a abertura de um processo-crime contra o governador e chefias policiais do Uíge, José Carvalho da Rocha e Ernesto Hayamunye, respectivamente.  Apresentámos uma queixa-crime contra as chefias policiais que comandaram os ataques à democracia materializados nos ataques à UNITA, nomeadamente contra o senhor Ernesto Hayamunye, na qualidade de comandante provincial, e os seus subordinados imediatos que estiveram envolvidos nos actos hediondos ocorridos no dia 8 de Agosto de 2026, de forma dolosa e premeditada. Incluímos, igualmente, no processo que instaurámos, o senhor José Carvalho da Rocha, enquanto cidadão que, fazendo uso do poder que lhe é conferido pelo Estado, permitiu e orientou que a polícia atacasse a democracia.   No resto do continente, Na República Centro-Africana, morreram mais de 100 pessoas numa derrocada numa mina de ouro artesanal, esta terça-feira, na aldeia de Zamboye, perto da fronteira com os Camarões. Na Zâmbia, o presidente cessante – Hakainde Hichilema – foi reeleito para um segundo mandato com 60% dos votos. O anúncio foi feito, esta terça-feira, 18 de Agosto, pela comissão eleitoral. Em notícias desportivas, os Camarões venceram pela primeira vez o Campeonato Africano das Nações de futebol feminino, derrotando na final o Malawi por 3-0, no domingo 16 de Agosto, em Rabat. Cabo Verde ficou pela fase de grupos, mas as Tubarões Azuis foram as únicas que não perderam diante das camaronesas nesta competição. It's International Women's Day on Sunday 8 March, and our guest is the Labour Member of Parliament for Bradford West, Naz Shah. Naz tells Gyles her extraordinary story; about her father, who left the family when she was only six years old, leaving the children and their mother in poverty, insecurity and sometimes squalor.
