SEASON 4 EPISODE 31: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Do you want to hear the real lesson of this week’s Democratic landslide? Mamdani ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Sherrill ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Spanberger ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Prop 50 won on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Hey, you can do both at the same time! Who knew? Not difficult. Easy to remember. Useful on all occasions. Worked in New York, where they elected a socialist when only a quarter of the voters say they are socialists. Worked in Virginia, where they elected as governor an ex-congresswoman born in Jersey. Worked in Jersey, where they elected as a governor an ex-congresswoman born in Virginia. Money Issues, and Trump Equals Death. Useful on all occasions. It’s a floor wax AND a dessert topping. Of course the context is just as much fun as the lesson. That's becauseTrump not only doesn’t realize he got the S kicked out of him, but he doesn’t realize he’s already forced himself to both end the government shutdown and lose the government shutdown. “Trump wasn’t on the ballot,” Trump screamed. “And ‘Shutdown’… were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections...” Ah, poor Trump. Metaphorically, Trump not only was on the ballot - every ballot but he was on the ballot in the worst possible way. Everybody could vote no on him, but it was almost impossible to vote YES. The lame duck politician’s worst nightmare. And right now no duck is lamer than Trump. Democrats: run on your money issues and that Trump equals death. It’s a floor wax and a dessert topping! ALSO: No, I am not going to sanewash Dick Cheney, even after his passing. Yes, at the end, when it was loyalty to the country or Trump he chose the country and it's good to finish strong. But I will still remember him for that 9/11-Iraq exploitation thing. And I am still proud that - as you'll hear - I pissed him off enough as Vice President for him to publicly clap back. B-Block (30:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Roger Stone, who helped advance the deplorable Laura Loomer, is now shocked she's deplorable. Similarly Ben Shapiro, who helped sell Tucker Carlson's evil to the far right, is now shocked he's evil. And I-Never-Winsome Earle-Sears and scabby Fox host Charlie Hurt think Barack Obama not voting for her when he voted for Kamala Harris is hypocritical (so...Earle-Sears voted for Kamala, and Hurt voted for Spanberger?) C-Block (40:30) SPORTSBALLCENTER: You probably aren't interested in my thoughts on the latest new selection committee and the latest eight nominees for baseball's Hall of Fame (though I have many of them). But you may be entertained by the sagas of the previous selection committees and the legend of how the ex-players on them used to cast "courtesy votes" for their old buddies and one year Ted Williams and the others screwed up and accidentally cast way too many of them for a not-so-Hall-of-Famish catcher named Rick Ferrell and he actually got elected.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic is coming to Citi Field, and Carlos Delgado is taking it seriously. Delgado joins Jay Horwitz to break down why this matchup is so much more than a game — the energy, the culture, the bragging rights — and why once first pitch hits, everyone's playing to win. He talks about teaming up with Carlos Beltrán on the bench, Mets bullpen coach José Rosado, and why he's managing Puerto Rico like it's the World Baseball Classic. Delgado also opens up on 25 years of his Extra Bases Foundation, rebuilding Puerto Rico after hurricanes, mentoring the next generation of players, and what it means to still hold the PR home run record. Oh — and he tells the story behind that 9-RBI night at Yankee Stadium.

Send us a textFounded in 1901, the AL contains teams like #Yankees and #RedSox who have an epic list in their top 5 for players hitting home runs while a member of the franchise. Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, David "Big Papi' Ortiz, Jim Rice, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra are all in their teams top 5. All are HOFer.. Aaron Judge is outside the Yankee top five but he's closing fast. Then there's the #orioles. Another original #AmericanLeague team, they started as the Milwaukee Brewers for one year before moving to St. Louis and becoming the Browns. HOFers Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken Jr. and Frank Robinson are in the top 5. But Besides being mostly terrible, the Browns had few home run threats. The #bluejays and #Rays are more recent additions but only Fred McGriff is in the top five of either team and is a HOFer. Carlos Delgado rules the roost for Toronto. We'll be right back Break 2: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE STORY 4: How we ‘brainwash' ourselves while we sleep Neurobiologists have discovered that our brains undergo a cleansing process every night during sleep, similar to washing dishes, to rid themselves of waste accumulated during the day. This process involves coordinated brain waves propelling fluid through brain tissue to remove debris. The findings, based on studying sleeping mice, suggest new strategies for tackling diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which involve the buildup of waste in the brain. Enhancing this brain cleansing process could potentially allow people to sleep less while maintaining health, benefiting those with insomnia. Understanding this process better could lead to therapies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases by improving waste removal from the brain. The brain's cleaning method may vary depending on the type and amount of waste present. STORY 5: Georgia Democrats push for state laws protecting reproductive rights following Alabama court ruling Georgia Democrats are urging Republicans to safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling deeming fertilized eggs as children under state law. Sen. Elena Parent, the lead sponsor of the bill, emphasizes the need for certainty amid concerns that couples in Georgia may reconsider IVF due to legal uncertainty. Democrats call for legislative action to protect IVF and contraception, expressing concerns over potential legal implications similar to those seen in Alabama. However, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch dismisses the need for such legislation, citing the ruling's applicability only to Alabama. Despite Democratic efforts, Gooch opposes addressing the issue hastily in the Senate, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed bill. Additionally, Democrats highlight the lack of congressional action to safeguard contraception access following a Supreme Court justice's opinion suggesting reconsideration of precedents like Roe v. Wade. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: INGLES 8 STORY 6: Georgia Power could face new law to disclose its cost of power generation on customer bills Georgia Power customers are facing higher electricity rates and increased costs for nuclear expansion, prompting a push for transparency in billing. House Bill 1406, championed by Chairman Don Parsons, requires Georgia Power to disclose information about fuel costs on customer bills, aiming to enhance understanding of energy charges. This comes amid concerns over Georgia Power's business practices and recent rate hikes. While the company opposes the bill, arguing that much of the information is available online, proponents emphasize the need for clarity, particularly regarding fluctuating fuel costs. Critics accuse Georgia Power of prioritizing secrecy over customer interests, highlighting the importance of transparency in government-run monopolies. The bill's fate now rests with the House Rules Committee ahead of the legislative deadline. There is one way that the 2023 Mets might outdo the 2022 Mets in a positive way, and that is with their power. Brandon Nimmo hit his 19th home run of the season last night, which puts him one away from giving the Mets four players with 20 or more. When Nimmo next goes deep, he'll join Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor, both of whom cracked 20-plus last year, as well as Francisco Álvarez, who like Nimmo has a career high this year — the catcher, of course, is a rookie. Last year, Eduardo Escobar gave the Mets three 20-homer guys. The team record is five players with 20 or more, set by Alonso, Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis, Todd Frazier, and Jeff McNeil in 2019. Unless Daniel Vogelbach, currently at 12, has a huge September, the number this year will be four, and the Mets have done that three other times:* 1987: Gary Carter, Howard Johnson, Kevin McReynolds, Darryl Strawberry* 2000: Edgardo Alfonzo, Mike Piazza, Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile* 2016: Asdrúbal Cabrera, Yoenis Céspedes, Curtis Granderson, Neil WalkerFrom 2006-2008, Carlos Beltrán, Carlos Delgado, and David Wright each hit 20 or more homers, but never had a fourth slugger join them. Gibby breaks down a tough week for the Jays who are losing ground in the Wild Card race. How big a concern are injuries? Should Davis Schneider be playing every day? Is the schedule in the Jays' favour? Legendary slugger Carlos Delgado is Gabbin' with Gibby to chat about life after baseball, how he developed as a hitter and breaks down his 4-homerun game in 2003. Then we roast some Angels fans and toast a walk-off for the ages.
Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo each went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts last night in Georgia, another rough night in a rough season, and another little edit to the Mets' history books. The list of career three-strikeout games is an interesting one, because it's one of those things… like… you've got to be pretty good to be in the lineup to strike out three times regularly enough to be on the list. So, it's probably not a surprise that David Wright holds the record at 61, for as long as he was a power-hitting Met. It's a pretty wide gap, 10 of these games, to number two on the list, Michael Conforto at 51. Then it's Darryl Strawberry at 48, and now a tie for fourth at 44 between Dave Kingman and Alonso.Nimmo already was in the top 10, and now has broken his tie with Ron Swoboda for ninth place. Nimmo's 30th three-strikeout game puts him six behind the two men tied for sixth, Tommie Agee and Lucas Duda. Rounding out that top 10, with 28 times striking out three times in a game, is Jerry Koosman, who more than made up for it with the strikeouts he racked up on the mound — 1,799 of his 2,556 career K's came in orange and blue. The next 10 are pretty interesting as a mix: Curtis Granderson and Mookie Wilson at 24; Todd Hundley, Howard Johnson, and Cleon Jones at 22; Ike Davis at 21; Mike Piazza at 20; Carlos Beltrán and Tom Seaver at 19; and it's actually 11, not 10, because tied for 20th place on this list are Carlos Delgado and Francisco Lindor, with 18 three-strikeout games as Mets.Lindor was 1-for-2 last night, with a walk and a hit by pitch. That moved him up to sole possession of 48th place on the Mets' all-time list for reaching base three times in a game. He's done it 65 times now, snapping a tie with Ángel Pagán. Next time Lindor gets on base three times, he'll tie George Foster and Todd Zeile for 46th, with Gregg Jefferies (67), Hubie Brooks (69), and Ron Swoboda (70) on the radar. Wright has that team record at 336, with Nimmo the active leader at 142 (13th all-time, between Mookie and Lee Mazzilli), and Alonso even with Jeff McNeil at 109 (a 22nd-place tie between Conforto and Kevin McReyonlds). The top 11 Mets, ahead of Nimmo and Wilson, for reaching base three times in a game?* Wright, 336* José Reyes, 238* Edgardo Alfonzo, 196* Strawberry, 192* Jones & Piazza, 186* Keith Hernandez, 185* Beltrán, 171* HoJo, 170* Bud Harrelson, 168* Ed Kranepool, 154 This is a public episode. This is very specific to Pete Alonso and to the Mets, because the 37 home runs that he hit in 2021 are his career-low for a non-pandemic season, and his 35th home run already gave him the Mets record for 35-homer seasons with four, but now he's also got the Mets record for 37-homer seasons. It's not just that 37 is the number of homers Alonso hit two years ago, it's that 37 was the Mets' team record for more than a decade, from Dave Kingman doing it in 1976 (breaking his own team record of 36 the previous year to finally eclipse Frank Thomas' benchmark of 34 in the inaugural season of 1962) until Darryl Strawberry hit 39 in 1987 (and 1988; Kingman also hit 37 in 1982).Alonso's 37th homer also is notable because it means we're now into single-season leaderboard time. There's a four-way tie for eighth on the club list at 38, so Alonso's next home run will draw him even with Carlos Delgado (2006, 2008), Howard Johnson (1991), and Mike Piazza (2000).Strawberry owns both of the Mets' 39-homer seasons, and then there's two guys at 40: Alonso last year and Piazza in 1999. After that is the tie for second-most, Todd Hundley's former team record of 41 from 1996, tied by Carlos Beltrán in 2006. Everything from there to the Polar Bear's 53 as a rookie in 2019 is open to be claimed as a first for a Met to land on at the end of the year. This is a public episode. This is an excerpt from The Fall Line Podcast's episode on the unsolved disappearance of Carlos Ariel Delgado Mancha. Carlos Delgado disappeared in 1997, but there's no formal record of this fact—at least, not one his family can access. Although ICE allegedly holds that information in their internal records, there is no listing for Carlos, who was in the US on a temporary residency visa, with NamUs or any other state or county agency.
