In this episode of the show, Baldy, Raj and Stu discuss Stephen Fleming's appointment as England's Test coach, plus Joe Root's return to captaincy, a bit of Black Caps news and the West Indies taking a 1-0 lead against Pakistan. We start the show with the news that Stephen Fleming will succeed Brendon McCullum as England's Test coach - although not until the end of their upcoming series against Pakistan. We give our initial reactions, then dive into what changes that might lead to both on and off the field. As the conversation continues, we talk about how much pressure Fleming will face to immediately deliver results, whether he was the best candidate for the role and how he might put his own stamp on this group. We then detour briefly to talk about great international captains in our lifetimes, before returning to Fleming's first big decision at the helm, which was to appoint Joe Root as captain rather than Harry Brook. To round out the show, we bounce around a bit of Black Caps news, including some strong performances in The Hundred, whether NZ could be getting more from Finn Allen in the international arena, and the upcoming NZ A fixtures in Darwin. We also make mention of the West Indies' Test win against Pakistan, led by their impressive seam attack even with the curious absence of Alzarri Joseph.. We'll be back again next week with more news and views. Denmark House feels like a small pocket of Copenhagen tucked above Little Collins Street. Light pours through the large, black-framed windows, Danish drifts across the room, and Raj Shrestha looks completely at home. After spending almost 15 years in Denmark, he has found a place in Melbourne where that part of his life still feels close. Raj is deeply passionate about being a chef, but there is nothing showy about him. He speaks beautifully about learning, leadership and the responsibility of looking after people, whether they are working beside him or walking through the restaurant door. We talked about growing up in Nepal, discovering himself in Copenhagen and now his new life in Melbourne. I especially loved the way Raj spoke about energy, and the importance of noticing how people are feeling before the first ticket even comes in, as well as his curiosity and desire to always be better at what he does.

Fronteras malditas

La ContraHistoria

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2026 83:51

Do you really need $1 million to retire, or is that just a retirement myth? Raj Shah and Rick Borek discuss why retirement success may depend more on income planning than hitting a specific savings target. They explore how guaranteed income strategies, Social Security, 401(k)s, fixed income options, and portfolio structure can work together to create financial confidence. The conversation also highlights why many pre-retirees struggle to turn retirement savings into a sustainable income plan and why a 401(k) alone is not a complete retirement strategy. For more information or to schedule a consultation with SC Wealth Advisors visit: scwealthadvisors.com Raj Shah and Rick Borek focus on wealth management, retirement planning, personal finance, taxes, estate planning and so much more. Combined, Raj and Rick have over 55 years of financial planning experience and are eager to help you retire in the most efficient manner.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is the fourth stop on our five-part audio guide to Asheville, North Carolina, and it may be the tastiest one yet. In this episode of Unpacked by Afar, host Aislyn Greene digs into Asheville food, and the surprising reason this mountain city punches so far above its weight at the table. Aislyn joins a walking food tour with Sita of Eating Asheville, eating her way through a town where farm to table isn't a slogan but a fact of geography. Along the way she: Discovers that Asheville food can be a real relief for anyone with dietary restrictions at the celiac-run kitchen of Strada Italiano Hears the moving, Helene-shaped story behind Mehfil from its owner, Raj Tastes mountain-grown rice at the farm-to-table cornerstone Table with chef Catherine Smedley Forages Appalachian flavors at Luminosa And finishes with a former science teacher turned chocolatier, Melissa Quinn, at Asheville Chocolate. It's a scene built on tight relationships between kitchens and the farms a few ridges away, where the rice on your plate might have been grown just up the road, and where a devastating hurricane the year before only deepened the sense that these restaurants belong to their community. But great Asheville food is also a question of who gets to make it, and whose history gets remembered. In a segment on the region's Black foodways, Aislyn talks with two of the city's most celebrated chefs, Ashleigh Shanti of Good Hot Fish and Rakim Gaines of Capella on 9, about Affrilachian cooking, representation behind the stove, and the stories layered into every plate. Their conversation is a reminder that a food town's story has to include the people history has too often left off the menu. It all adds up to a rich piece of cultural travel and a portrait of one of the best small food towns in the country. Whatever you come hungry for, consider this your guide to where to go and what to know. Unpacked by Afar is a travel podcast that unpacks one destination at a time, with a real love of food and travel. This Asheville audio guide has one more episode to go, so look for it in the feed. Brands have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to channels. And the whole thing can be a bit confusing. One of the biggest mistakes you can make, however, is not casting a wide enough net. Raj Shah, VP of Sales at Obvi, chops it up with us on this episode of The Longer Game to talk about how to approach channel expansion. The number one thing every brand needs is more eyeballs. And you can't get more eyeballs if you aren't in the locations at which your customers shop. Consumers today have access to more information than ever before and a myriad of options to choose from when it comes to purchasing. Not being where they're at means losing a net new customer. Grab a scoop of collagen and shaker bottle, shake that thing up, and press play for another amazing episode. What they cover1. Don't settle for on narrow retailers. Think bigger and keep your net wide because visibility is important for the success of any brand.2. Instead of asking yourself why, ask yourself why not? It changes the way you view things. Instead of liming you, it opens up your mind to a world of possibilities.3. In today's day and age, you have to meet customers where they are, because you can't capture new customers if you aren't where they're shopping.4. Listen to your customers and your buyers. Take the feedback you're receiving and be willing to make tweaks to your product. That level of openness can be the exact thing that opens doors for you.5. Consumers have more information now than ever before. This gives them a lot of power. They decide where they purchase and when. That should be something that influences your channel strategy.6. Trade spend shouldn't be viewed in isolation per channel. So many brands make the mistake of only looking at return per channel, forgetting consumers don't make purchasing decisions in a linear fashion. Always look at spend beyond each channel with a more holistic view._______________________The Longer Game explores the future of retail across Amazon, ecommerce, and brick-and-mortar.The goal is simple: help brands grow by understanding how all channels work together.Retail is evolving. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Raj and Stu talk mostly ODI cricket for the first time in ages, as we look back at the first two matches in England's series against India and the first three of New Zealand's tour to the West Indies. We also pay tribute to the late Sir Garfield Sobers - a true legend of the game.   We start the show with England v India, and it's Rohit Sharma who has been under the most scrutiny so far. Is it time India pull stumps on his international career? For England, it seems clear the talent is there to build a formidable white-ball side, but have they got the tactics right? And is Harry Brook determined to self-destruct in every innings? We also discuss whether ODI openers should consider a T20 approach, and continue to speculate on the vacant England test coaching job now that Andy Flower has withdrawn from the race. As the show continues, the conversation moves to the West Indies, where at the time of recording New Zealand held a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series. After bat dominated the first game, it's been the Black Caps spinners who have delivered the decisive moments. We talk about where Michael Bracewell and Jayden Lennox fit on New Zealand's depth chart, and there's also praise for Tom Latham and his performances in the middle order of this ODI side. To round out the show, we pay tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away this week just short of his 90th birthday. One of the true greats of the game - perhaps the greatest there ever has been - and a player who excelled across so many skills, it's fair to assume he'd have been a superstar in any era. "If you can't manage $1,000, you can't manage a million."   In this raw, eye-opening episode, I bring you former WWE Champion, actor, and entrepreneur Raj Dhesi, better known to millions as Jinder Mahal. We shine a light on the brutal price he paid to go from being out of shape, drinking every day, and released from WWE to completely reinventing himself, earning Vince McMahon's trust, and becoming world champion. Raj exposes the lies behind overnight success, the danger of letting a company own your entire personal brand, and why earning more money means nothing if you never learn how to manage it. This is a wake-up call for anyone who knows they are capable of more but keeps waiting for the perfect moment.   Expect brutal truths on building discipline when nobody is watching, creating structure after your career changes, turning your name into an asset you actually own, and using investing to create real freedom instead of looking rich. Raj also takes us behind the scenes of working with The Rock, acting on ABC's Big Sky, nearly being fired by Vince McMahon, and making the sacrifices that transformed his body, career, and entire identity. The life you want may be possible, but the old version of you cannot come with you.

Why do so many dishonest, manipulative, and unethical people seem to rise to the top while good people struggle just to get by? In this powerful episode of The On-Call Empath, Raj Montage challenges the beliefs most people are afraid to question. After more than 300+ episodes and conversations with therapists, coaches, healers, and experts, Raj shares the conclusion he's reached: doing the right thing doesn't always guarantee success. He explores how power, money, politics, and corporate systems can reward manipulation over integrity, leaving compassionate people feeling exhausted and disillusioned. This isn't about telling you to become a bad person—it's about seeing the world as it is, not as we wish it were. Raj discusses why empathy is often exploited, why many institutions have lost their moral compass, and why meaningful change requires questioning the systems we've been taught to trust. If you've ever wondered why it feels like the wrong people keep winning, this episode offers an honest perspective that challenges conventional thinking and encourages you to protect your values while navigating a complex world.Host: Raj MontagePodcast: The On-Call EmpathIG intro credit: it.isjoao*Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of sensitive medical and mental health topics. The On-Call Empath Podcast:Welcome to "The On-Call Empath" podcast, where we dive deep into the complexities of abuse and trauma. The Short Coat
Roshan Sethi on Med School Simpering and Making It in Hollywood

The Short Coat

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2026 58:57

Radiation oncologist and director Roshan Sethi: confidence in medicine is mostly performance. The book club is back, and M2s Anna Royer, Ellie Johnson, and Sofia Hueser, and M4 Alex Nigg all crowd around to grill an actual Hollywood director about his debut novel. Somewhere in Roshan Sethi‘s frontal lobe is a cyst, and it’s possibly why he is a reformed gunner, Hollywood writer/director, still radiation oncologist, and now novelist. Sethi is co-creator of Fox’s The Resident, and author of The Simp: A Novel Without a Hero, a new book built out of a viral job ad so horrifying nobody would claim authorship of it. What does it mean that Raj, the novel’s desperate, self-aware sycophant of a protagonist, reads less like a Hollywood assistant and more like a third-year on rotations? Sethi doesn’t dodge the comparison—he wrote most of Raj’s obliging, invisible, gunner-brained misery straight out of his own decade in medicine. Sethi describes himself, pre-Hollywood, as ruthless enough to publish 15 papers in a single year for a career he’s since walked mostly away from–he still practices 9 weeks a year–and he does the math on what staying in medicine actually cost him: when The Resident got greenlit for a sixth season and syndication, he’d already turned the show down to finish residency, a decision one producer later priced at $12 million. Sethi traces a lot of that old ambition back to being closeted through college and medical school; the striving, he says, was never really about medicine, and coming out took most of the edge off it. Also, what happens to a person’s personality over four years of medical school? Sethi’s answer: it gets slowly closeted right along with everything else, trained out of you until invisibility reads as professionalism. He tells the room the worst response to getting pimped isn’t “I don’t know”—it’s saying it apologetically, like you owe someone an explanation for not yet knowing something nobody expects you to know. Speaking of things that require confidence you don’t actually have: Sethi’s next film, The Surgeon, stars Michelle Yeoh as a retired surgeon taken hostage and forced to operate. Dave can’t wait. He even pitched Sethi on his own idea for a movie that’s not at all derivative, and though it will probably star Mark Ruffalo, Dave is available. On representation, Sethi draws a sharp line between his two industries. Medicine has become more female and more Indian, Asian, and Nigerian over time precisely because it runs on an objective, if imperfect, filter that values whoever scores highest on the MCAT. Hollywood, by his account, has no equivalent filter: roughly 90 percent of the highest-grossing films are still directed by men; minorities in the industry get treated as diversity projects rather than talent, and there’s nothing resembling medicine’s blunt, if flawed, meritocracy. One of Patrik's former high school football bullies—the same person who admitted to bullying him for being gay and even spit on him during a school play—walked across the room after 40 years to apologize. We relive the emotional conversation, what forgiveness really means, and why Pol wasn't about to let him off the hook without asking the question everyone else was thinking. We also share the hilarious disaster of Patrik's misspelled reunion name badge (again!), discovering the memorial table for classmates we've lost, reconnecting with old friends, hearing about Patrik's very first girlfriend, dancing the night away, reliving California's infamous high school smoking section, and laughing over stories only classmates from the Class of '86 could appreciate. Along the way we talk about growing older, chasing dreams, finding happiness, surviving high school, and realizing just how far life has taken us—from Walnut High School to television, fashion, radio and beyond. We also revisit the emotional story of Pol being honored by his Armenian school years ago, the acceptance speech that accidentally left Patrik out, and why they're still laughing about it today. Of course, no episode would be complete without Armenian Coffee Reading moments, SnowWhite90210 stealing the spotlight, travel tips for Idyllwild, a shout-out to Raj and The Bunkhouse, plenty of celebrity-style fashion commentary, and the playful banter that makes our marriage—and this podcast—so much fun. If you've ever wondered whether you should attend your high school reunion, this episode may just convince you to go... because sometimes healing, forgiveness, unexpected laughter and lifelong friendships are waiting 40 years later. Today on Undressed with Pol' and Patrik, we're taking you behind the scenes of one of the most emotional—and hilarious—weekends we've had in years: Patrik's 40th Walnut High School Reunion! What started as a simple reunion quickly turned into an unforgettable road trip filled with laughter, shocking observations, unexpected friendships and plenty of classic Pol' and Patrik commentary. Before we even arrived, we debated everything from what to wear to whether Idyllwild even existed. We quickly discovered winding mountain roads, scenic overlooks (or at least what Patrik thought were scenic overlooks), tiny cabins, quirky hotels and a mountain town that completely surprised us. We share the hilarious truth about checking into our rustic mountain lodge, meeting the unforgettable owner Raj, navigating tiny showers, questionable TV reception, and why our "upgraded room" became one of the funniest stories of the weekend. Then came the first reunion event at the Idyllwild Winery, where we reunited with classmates we hadn't seen in forty years. We talk about the excitement, the nerves, the reality of seeing everyone after decades, and how life has changed for all of us. We laugh about reunion fashion, reminiscing over high school memories, reconnecting with old friends, hearing stories we'd never heard before, and watching complete strangers accidentally crash our reunion tables. Along the way we share hilarious observations about mountain life, why every business seemed to fly rainbow flags, why Patrik thought Idyllwild looked like a witness protection program, and how one mountain town created enough comedy material to last an entire season. Dinner brought another unforgettable moment after an awkward encounter at a local Mexican restaurant turned into a conversation about kindness, inclusion and remembering how simple gestures can create lifelong friendships. We even share the incredible story of how a chance dinner years ago introduced us to friends we still travel the world with today. We wrap up Part One over drinks at the local brewery, catching up with classmates who now live all over the world—including discovering two former classmates who unknowingly relocated just miles from each other in Costa Rica. It's funny, nostalgic, heartfelt and completely unfiltered as we begin reliving one of the most memorable weekends of our lives. Trust us...this reunion is only getting started.
