As the stories unfold on the television program ER, the doctor's struggle to address emergency medicine and their personal and professional lives, too. This episode brings the ER to life and the impact of trauma and stress on emergency medicine physicians. Our guest is Dr. Ronald Roth. Dr. Ronald Roth began his career in Emergency Service at Penn State University where he completed an EMT course and then worked on the University Ambulance Service. He earned his medical degree and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Pittsburgh. As a resident, Ron staffed a physician emergency response vehicle and served as a flight physician on a medical helicopter service.  For more than 30 years, he worked at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. In his tenure, Ron has served as medical director of paramedic training at the Center for Emergency Medicine, Director of the EMS fellowship, and chief of the division of EMS in the Department of Emergency Medicine.    Dr. Roth currently serves as the medical director of the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety, Command Physician at the UPMC Medical Command Center, medical director for the Dicks Sporting Goods–Pittsburgh marathon, and as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers football club. Episode 140 is Scott Sampy. Scott and I go way back to our days at Zepfel Ambulance. We almost went to nursing school together. He did and I went to work for the City of Pittsburgh. Scott is currently the Administrator of Vidant EastCare, the 5 helicopter, 22 ambulance medical transport division at Vidant Medical Center, which is the only level one trauma center in eastern North Carolina. Scott has more than 40 years of clinical, leadership, and educational experience in the air medical and ground transport industry. A western Pennsylvania native, Scott began his career as an EMT then Paramedic and RN and later received a BA degree in Legal Studies from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters of Management and Technology degree from Carlow University. After finishing nursing school he worked at the WVU and UPMC Presbyterian Hospital emergency departments, then became a flight nurse at STAT MedEvac. In addition to his professional career, in his spare time, Scott has volunteered as a firefighter at several fire departments, rising to the rank of Chief at the Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department in Pennsylvania. Scott discusses his career, his first day as a flight medic, and ins and outs of the air ambulance industry. We had fun catching up.

John Raudabaugh, Former NLRB Member, will join us to discuss the new developments, including:UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, 365 NLRB No. 153 (December 11, 2017) overruled United States Postal Service, 364 NLRB No. 116 (2016) reinstating administrative law judge authority to accept settlements over the objection of the NLRB General Counsel and the charging party considering Independent Stave reasonableness factors.The Boeing Company, 365 NLRB No. 154 (December 14, 2017) issues a new test for evaluating workplace rules. No longer will the Board consider whether rules “chill” employee rights. Rather, if the rule is not explicitly unlawful, its potential impact on protected concerted activity and the employer’s legitimate business justifications will be evaluated to determine legitimacy.Joint employer status was returned to prior, common-law standards in Hy-Brand Industrial Contractors, Ltd., 365 NLRB No. 156 (December 14, 2017). The new Board majority overturned the 2015 decision in Browning-Ferris Industries, 362 NLRB No. 186 (2015).PCC Structurals, Inc., 365 NLRB No. 160 (December 15, 2017) overruled the Specialty Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center of Mobile, 357 NLRB 934 (2011) decision, which legitimized “micro-units,” allowing unions to organize whatever group, no matter how small. The Board majority abandoned the employer burden of establishing an “overwhelming” community of interest standard and returned to traditional criteria. An employer’s ability to implement changes to established benefit plans was restored in Raytheon Network Centric Systems, 365 NLRB No. 161 (December 15, 2017).
