Today I am back with one of my herbal teachers to talk about herbal and holistic approaches to managing Lyme disease. It is a topic that is becoming ever more relevant as the medical community has been coming to the realization that there is such a thing as chronic Lyme, where acute measures such as antibiotics fall short. This is where herbal support can really shine in helping to peel back the layers that are causing disharmony and reestablish a healthy foundation for health. Richard Mandelbaum RH is a clinical herbalist with a private practice, offering personalized health consultations, online and in person in the southern Catskills, NY. Richard has been an avid student of our native flora for close to forty years, and in addition to seeing clients he teaches classes in clinical herbal medicine, field botany, and phytochemistry. He is a co-founder and core instructor at the ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism and is on the faculty at David Winston's Center for Herbal Studies and the Won Institute of Graduate Studies.  Richard  has been a Registered Herbalist since 2003 and was a member of the American Herbalists Guild board of directors from 2012 to 2018. Nearly 9 in 10 pharmacists are at a high risk of burnout, but how do affected pharmacists find a path forward? In this episode, we sit down with Devan Conley, Pharmacist at TrueCare Pharmacy in Concord, NC, to find out firsthand. Devin discusses his journey with burnout—which crept up during COVID and kept on for years, culminating in a struggle with prescription misuse. But, more importantly, Devan shares how he recovered, and how that recovery reshaped the way that he approaches life and pharmacy alike. Today, Devan is a pharmacist at a 340B pharmacy inside a federally qualified health center, launching behavioral health and harm reduction programs so that anyone dealing with similar struggles can find support. Being a pharmacist is exciting–as long as you're willing to try new things. These are wise words from my returning guest on today's podcast, who has been paving the way for integrative pharmacy. Dr. Swathi Varanasi is an award-winning pharmacist passionate about the intersection of personalized medicine, patient outcomes, and innovation. With experience spanning patient care, biotech, research, academia, and consumer product goods, Dr. Swathi has paved the way for healthcare professionals to pursue non-traditional career paths through creating postdoctoral training programs, industry internships, and online educational programs. Today I am sharing an important conversation with one of my primary herbal teachers, about the micro and macro views of health and healing. Modern life too often disassociates us from our innate identity and relationship with our greater ecosystem, biome, and planet. Herbal medicine, when practiced deeply and mindfully, goes beyond a simplistic replacement of conventional medicine with "natural" remedies, but moves us sometimes subtly and sometimes profoundly toward a recovery of our biological identities. The human body has the innate power to heal itself. Without this power to self heal, even the most advanced medications and surgical procedures would ultimately fail. The role of the herbalist in the healing process is to consider the client as a whole person, and to consult her/him/them concerning changes in lifestyle, diet, herbs, and supplementation in order to foster an increased state of balance and health - thus maximizing the body's self healing capabilities. Herbal medicine is not only the people's medicine, it is the planet's medicine. While we celebrate the increasing popularity of using herbs, we need to ensure herbal traditions remain true to our roots and accessible to all. Today's episode dives into something that's frankly underestimated and not talked about enough: women's health. Not only are women underrepresented in clinical studies, but they're frequently told that their suffering is either “normal” or “all in their head.” Or they're prescribed a bunch of pharmaceuticals that haven't been extensively studied in their bodies, especially for long-term effects.  My guest today believes that when women's health is optimized, they can GIVE 100% to their daily tasks and FIND MORE JOY in life. It's that simple. And women's health is intimately connected to their hormones, emotions, and their menstrual cycles. So let's stop making menstrual health a taboo subject, and make it a priority instead. Dr. Robinson always felt a calling to help others in the area of health and wellness. At the age of 9, she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that was put into remission using conventional medicine. She never forgot the kindness shown by her doctors and wanted to ‘pay it forward'. This passion for health took her to the medical field. She graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 2011 and began working for the U.S. Army as a pharmacist. Upon completing her time in the service, she began working for CVS pharmacy in 2017. In 2020, Dr. Robinson was introduced to the world of Functional Medicine. Within a few months, she achieved certification as a practitioner through Functional Medicine University, quit her job at CVS and branched out on her own. All this time, she recognized there were still some unresolved issues in her health. Using a holistic approach, she started doing the work, seeing results and helping others do the same. Howard, shareholder and director at Brown & Fortunato, P.C. In today's environment, it is challenging enough to profitably run a specialty pharmacy. The pharmacy needs to avoid the additional challenge of inquiries, audits and investigations by governmental agencies and PBMs. This podcast will discuss the proactive steps the specialty pharmacy can take to lower the risk of inquiries, audits and investigations. This podcast will also set out steps the pharmacy can take to resolve inquiries, audits and investigations before they spin out of control. The podcast will focus on the following: • Corporate Compliance Program – The specialty pharmacy needs to implement a robust compliance program that is specific to the pharmacy's business model. Such a program will head off many problems before they arise…and a compliance program will resolve problems, once arisen, before they spin out of control. • PBMs – A PBM is in a stronger negotiating position than that of the specialty pharmacy. At the end of the day, the PBM “possesses the pharmacy's money.” This podcast will discuss the steps the pharmacy should take to establish a “win-win” relationship with a PBM. Doing so will eliminate uncertainty and prevent many problems from arising. However, if the PBM ends up bringing an inquiry, audit or investigation against the pharmacy, the podcast will set out the steps the pharmacy should take to resolve the inquiry, audit or investigation without it devolving into an adversarial action. • Governmental Agencies – There are a number of federal and state governmental agencies that a specialty pharmacy may have to deal with. These include (i) the Department of Justice, (ii) the Office of Inspector General, (iii) the DEA, (iv) the FDA, (v) state Attorneys General, and (vi) State Boards of Pharmacy. This podcast will discuss the steps the pharmacy should take when it is investigated by a governmental agency. As with working with PBMs, the pharmacy should strive to resolve a government investigation before it spins out of control.
