Genetic advantages in sport tend to be celebrated, but that isn't always the case when it comes to women's athletics. At the start of July, two female runners from Namibia, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, were told they couldn't compete in the 400m race in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics unless they reduced their naturally high testosterone hormone levels. Shivani Dave speaks to Katrina Karkazis, a professor of sexuality, women's, and gender studies, specialising in ‘sex testing' and sport regulations, about the rules that ban female athletes with naturally high testosterone. There was no mile or 1500m for women in the 1960 Olympic Games, but in 1961 my mum, Liz Joyce, ran the world leading time for the mile. She never got the opportunity to run at an Olympic Games, a World Championship or similar international athletics meeting because the furthest women were allowed to run was 200m. Athletics has moved on a lot since then, we discuss what it was like for women running back in the late 1950's, some of her crazy anecdotes and the differences between running then and running now, from a women's perspective. It's a timely interview with much discussion going on about #runequal and equality for women running cross country.

Fair Play? Women's Athletics in the Age of Gender Identity

Title IX was created in order to ensure that women had access to equal opportunities as men, including in sports. Now that legacy is threatened. New gender identity policies, which allow biological males who self-identify as women to compete against biological females, put women at a disadvantage. These policies can cost female athletes the titles, records, and scholarships that are rightfully theirs and even lead to serious sports-related injuries. Now, these policies could be imposed nationwide should lawmakers pass the Equality Act, a bill that would elevate “gender identity” as a protected class under federal anti-discrimination law.A fair playing field must acknowledge the enduring biological differences between males and females. Gender identity policies ignore this fact and so erase the unique talents and achievements of girls and women. Please join us for a conversation on this important topic. Growing up in Cataula, Georgia, Helen Grant was always involved in sports.  In this episode, she remembers her parent’s unwavering support through high school, college, and beyond. Helen Grant began her college career at Berry College in North Georgia.  It was there she met Coach Kay James, who encouraged her to play volleyball and softball, in addition to basketball. When James took a job at Southern Miss after Grant’s freshman year, Grant decided to come along the ride. Before Kay James came to Southern Miss, women’s basketball had been largely ignored. Grant describes how Coach James built up the team and generated excitement. After graduation, Grant remained active in sports, first as coach and later as an administrator. She credits Coach James for giving her a chance and looks back with pride on her role in building up women’s sports at USM. Helen Grant was inducted into the Southern Miss Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
