Summary When you're promoted into management, the shift can feel like you're suddenly in charge, but with very little guidance. In this episode, Andy chats with executive coach and author James Turk about his insightful book The Giving Game: A Manager's Playbook for the First Year of Leadership. James brings decades of experience helping leaders navigate that tricky transition from individual contributor to team leader. They explore why being a subject-matter expert doesn't automatically make you an effective leader, and why the first 45 days in a new role are so critical. James shares practical advice for building a strong team climate, coaching instead of controlling, and why clarity is one of the greatest gifts you can offer as a manager. Plus, they discuss what new managers often miss about feedback and delegation (and how to avoid those traps). Whether you're newly promoted or preparing to step into a leadership role, this conversation is filled with actionable insights. If you're looking for real-world advice on how to lead when you're suddenly in charge, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “The number one reason employees don't do what they're supposed to do is that they don't know what it is.” “Leadership isn't about being the smartest person in the room. It's about creating the conditions for others to succeed.” “Climate is how it feels to work for you, and as a leader, that's something you have the power to shape every day.” “Coaching isn't fixing the past. It's investing in someone's future performance.” “Most people, when they're promoted, don't have the skills, and they're afraid to admit it.” “If I want people to do the work, they need to know what's expected of them.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:57 Start of Interview 02:06 What early experiences shaped how you think about leadership? 05:30 Why call it 'The Giving Game'? 08:39 What would you coach me to do differently in my first 45 days as a new manager? 11:01 Why focus on climate instead of culture? 15:57 How do we shift teams from renter mode to ownership? 20:18 Why do so many managers think we're being clear? 21:42 How can leaders delegate in a way that builds ownership? 22:47 When did you make a delegation mistake because of lack of clarity? 25:25 What's an example of feedback that changed your career? 27:59 What do you think about the 'feedback sandwich' technique? 29:44 How can these ideas help parents at home? 32:10 End of Interview 32:31 Andy Comments After the Interview 36:15 Outtakes Learn More You can learn more about James Turk and his work at TheTurkGroup.com/TheGivingGameBook. This week's show brought to you by: Ketone-IQ You may have read a lot the last few years about the benefits of ketones for endurance performance, such as mitochondrial efficiency and glycogen sparing. Your body uses ketones for energy typically during fasting, long periods of exercise, or when you don't have as many carbohydrates. The problem is that you typically need to severely reduce your carbohydrate intake in order to take advantage of them, which is difficult to sustain, even for the most dedicated runner. But, thanks to Ketone-IQ you quickly deliver ketones to your bloodstream, putting you into ketosis within minutes without the need to fast, restrict calories or carbs, or exercise away your glycogen stores. And the academic literature on the effectiveness of ketones for running performance is overwhelming. For example, a 2021 study demonstrated that the ingestion of ketones improved mitochondrial efficiency by 7% and 2019 study concluded that using ketones significantly enhanced endurance performance while minimizing overtraining. If you want to see more of the research, head to ketone.com/RTTT Plus, for a limited time you can save 30% off your first subscription order & receive a free six pack of Ketone-IQ by going ketone.com/RTTT. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions Football team is dealing with multiple layers of college football simultaneously. Sunday evening, backup quarterback and offensive contributor Beau Pribula announced that he would transfer and leave the program. The next morning, starter Drew Allar announced his decision to return. All of this is playing out in the roster-building portion of the calendar while Penn State is still playing. Head coach James Franklin addressed all of these ideas during his Monday press confernece ahead of the team's playoff game against SMU. We'll discuss what Franklin said yesterday, give a preview of the transfer portal work the team is doing, plus preview the upcoming game against the Mustangs on the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. Join the show live or catch the replay embedded below, on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, or wherever you get your podcasts. Franklin calls for a massive change to college football. Yesterday, Franklin discussed the issues that led to Pribula's decision to transfer. The third-year passer wanted to stay with the program but couldn't manage the responsibilities on his plate. Franklin described it as a "no-win" situation and called for a change to the way the sport is run. "Beau should not be put in this position. Whether we don't play as many games during the season, whether we don't play conference championship games -- which could equal things out for teams not playing them anyway, finish this season so it aligns more with the academic calendar for most institutions because that's part of this pressure as well," Franklin said. To have a transfer portal/free agency going on right in the middle of the playoffs, there's just a lot of things that don't really make sense.I know there's been a lot of discussions about maybe a commissioner of college football, but I think it's pretty obvious we need that. We need somebody running college football."Transfer portal activity Penn State has hosted several transfer portal targets for the upcoming season. The team gained its first commitment on Monday evening when USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson joined the program for the 2025 season. We'll discuss Hudson's impact on the roster and his ability to make a dent in the team's receiver room next year. We'll also discuss the latest in Penn State recruiting during Fitz's recruiting update and give a preview of the game against SMU to close the show.
