Championships, chaos, and the road to March Madness. This week in women's sports had everything. The Mist are officially your 2026 Unrivaled Champions, and Breanna Stewart just added another trophy to an already ridiculous résumé. We break down the title run and what the new Unrivaled basketball league means for the future of women's hoops. But the celebration didn't stop at the trophy ceremony… it spilled into a reportedly wild after-party that ended with a battery charge involving Arike Ogunbowale, a reminder that nothing good happens after midnight. On the soccer side, the USWNT team claim another trophy, winning the SheBelieves Cup with dominant performances over Canada and Colombia. We talk standout moments, what it means for the squad heading into the next international window, and why this group looks scary good. Then it's Champ Week in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball, and the bracket picture is coming into focus. We break down conference tournament chaos and predict the No. 1 seeds heading into Selection Sunday.Bonus: Danielle's preseason Final Four picks are aging like fine wine, with UConn, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina all looking like legit title contenders.Sign up for the Women's Sports Weekly March Madness Bracket. 3-5-26 ABQ Journal's James Yodice joins TEAM Talk to preview the 2026 NMAA Basketball Championships
"It's been a really, really tough couple days. I've never been such a combination of stressed and sad." At Sunday's USA Track and Field Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta, the top three women — Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat — were led off course in the final mile of the race. The three were on track to take the podium, and to earn spots to represent the United States on a World Championship team. All signs were pointing to Jess, Emma Grace, and Ednah becoming Team USA ahead of the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen this September. National titles, prize money, sponsor bonuses, and, of course, the glory of breaking the tape and earning that moment were all on the line. Much has been said about the race, the misdirection, and the immediate aftermath. Molly Born ultimately broke the tape, as Jess, Emma Grace, and Ednah clawed their way back into the mix. But what happens now? The one unanimous takeaway from that day in Atlanta is that no one feels good about how the day played out. Today, Emma Grace Hurley comes to us from her much-deserved post-race vacation in the Cayman Islands to offer her unique perspective on all of this. Emma Grace spent the early years of her running career as a member of Atlanta Track Club Elite. She has served on committees for USA Track and Field, and currently lives in Indianapolis, where she is coached by former Atlanta Track Club Elite coach Andrew Begley. Emma Grace has a deeper understanding than most about how these various organizations work, about what goes into pulling off a road race of this scale and, of course, about what it's like being an athlete with so much at stake. This week we're joined by Allison Mercer, a Team USA ultrarunner, championship competitor, and thoughtful voice in the running community, to unpack the controversy that unfolded at the 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta.Allison is an accomplished distance runner who has represented the United States at the ultrarunning world championships and competed at national championship events herself. Allison is also a leader in the Atlanta running community and served as the three-hour pacer for the marathon event, which occurred on the same day.On race day in Atlanta, chaos erupted in the closing mile when the lead vehicle directed the front pack of women — including Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat — off the correct course. The mistake dramatically altered the outcome of the national championship and raised serious questions about race organization, athlete fairness, and accountability. In response, Allison wrote a widely discussed op-ed for Outside Run analyzing the incident and the reaction that followed. Rather than simply assigning blame, she explored the deeper structural issues behind championship road racing — from course control and race operations to governing-body policies — while urging the running community to pursue accountability without losing perspective on the people involved. In this conversation, Allison brings her experience as an athlete and community leader to share how we can better respond to mistakes in our community. We appreciate Allison's insight! You can find Allison on Instagram @onewomandancepartyFollow us on Instagram and Facebook Interested in hiring a coach? “I've gone into this year with less pressure on myself and have not been afraid to put myself in a vulnerable situation. I'm not afraid to lose anymore and I'm not scared to put myself in a situation to lose. I don't mind getting to the front of the race and pushing it or trying to control it so that it suits my needs a bit better than other people's. That's been the biggest change this year.”My guest for today's episode is Gracie Morris. If you watch the final 100 meters of the USATF Indoor Championships 1500m final, you know exactly why she's here. With 100 meters to go, Gracie was sitting in 4th place. A World Indoor team spot looked just out of reach, but when that inside rail opened up on the final turn, she didn't hesitate. She surged through on the inside, closed in 14.3 seconds for her final 100 meters, and crossed the finish line in 4:11 to claim second place and her first World Championships berth on the track. Nikki Hiltz won yet another U.S. title, so that's your team for this month's World Championships. What makes Gracie Morris's rise even more impressive is her trajectory. At TCU, she qualified for NCAAs twice but never made a final. Fast forward a year and she's a member of Puma Elite and has transformed into a dangerous miler in the United States. In 2025 alone, she won the Sir Walter Mile and the Fifth Avenue Mile. She also claimed the U.S. 2K cross country title and dropped her 1500m personal best from 4:08 to 4:04. This year, she's already run 4:02.In this conversation, we talk about that decisive final lap, the lessons she's learned about racing instincts, and the steady belief that got her through years of injuries in high school and college.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavezGuest: Gracie Morris | @ggraciemorrisProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: A blast from the past, Olipop's Shirley Temple combines smooth vanilla flavor with bright lemon and lime, finished with cherry juice for that nostalgic grenadine-like flavor. When a season unravels the way this one has for Auburn Tigers men's basketball, the blame game comes fast and loud. Is it on the coaching staff? The roster construction? Player development? Leadership? Or is this simply a case of expectations outpacing reality? In this episode, we take a hard look at what went wrong on the Plains. We break down the role of head coach Bruce Pearl, examine the scrutiny surrounding assistant coach Steven Pearl, and evaluate whether the players themselves failed to execute when it mattered most. But instead of pointing fingers in just one direction, we dig into the bigger picture — culture, accountability, adjustments, and buy-in. Because the truth is rarely simple. Championships are collective. So are collapses. Was this a coaching misstep? A locker room issue? A talent evaluation problem? Or does responsibility fall on everyone? The NCAA will crown its first women's wrestling champions March 6–7, 2026 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, marking a historic step for the sport's rapid growth at the collegiate level. NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances Ryan Tressel explains how the organization built the championship structure from the ground up—leaning on Division II and III templates, collaborating with coaches and USA Wrestling, and navigating qualification numbers, format decisions, and calendar placement. With more than 100 NCAA institutions sponsoring women's wrestling and 180 qualifiers approved for the inaugural event, the championship reflects unprecedented expansion since the sport achieved emerging status. The event will stream on ESPN+ with multi-mat “whip-around” coverage before culminating on a single championship mat Saturday night. Hosted in partnership with Think Iowa City and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, the Coralville venue offers a compact, fan-friendly setup designed to create a reunion-style atmosphere for athletes, alumni, and supporters. As Division III prepares to sponsor its own standalone championship in 2028, the 2026 tournament represents both a milestone and a launching point for the NCAA era of women's collegiate wrestling.
