All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Police: Pair of women went on shoplifting spree at Mall of Georgia Two women from southeast Georgia, Nakenda Janea Thompson Fevrier of Pooler and Shacarrie Deasia Heyward of Savannah, are facing a total of 54 charges for allegedly stealing approximately $8,000 worth of merchandise from nine stores at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. The incident occurred on June 22, when they were caught attempting to steal large quantities of items from Dick's Sporting Goods. They fled on foot, leaving behind their vehicle, which was subsequently searched under a warrant, revealing six large trash bags filled with stolen goods from multiple stores. Charges against each woman include felony theft, possession of tools for a crime, loitering, and misdemeanor shoplifting. Police are seeking information on their whereabouts and urge anyone with details to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a potential reward. STORY 2: Trump seeks to toss NY felony conviction after immunity win Former President Donald Trump is seeking to overturn his New York hush money conviction following a Supreme Court ruling that grants substantial immunity to presidents for actions taken while in office. Trump's lawyers are preparing to request that a New York judge set aside the jury's verdict against him and are proposing to delay his July 11 sentencing to allow for briefing and arguments. The Supreme Court's 6-3 decision overturned lower court rulings that rejected Trump's claim of absolute immunity for federal charges related to efforts to influence the 2020 election results. The case revolves around payments made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, with Trump arguing that these actions were related to his official duties. STORY 3: Girls Tennis Player of the Year: Wesleyan's Sophie Gibbs Sophie Gibbs and the Wesleyan girls tennis team celebrated their third consecutive state championship, capping an undefeated season with a 20-0 record. Gibbs, who played No. 1 singles, led the team with a 17-3 personal record and reflected on her final season with nostalgia and pride, noting the bonds formed and the achievements shared with her teammates. Her success on the court earned her recognition as the Gwinnett Daily Post's Girls Tennis Player of the Year. Looking ahead, Gibbs will continue her tennis career at Berry College, motivated by her love for the sport and the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at Wesleyan. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. A formidable defensive lineman standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 248 pounds, Lawston played a crucial role for his high school team, the Lions, during their state playoff run. In his senior year, he recorded impressive stats with 50 tackles, including 31 solo tackles and 12 tackles for loss, along with two sacks. STORY 5: Where will Atlanta Braves turn for help at the trade deadline? As the first half of the season wraps up, the Atlanta Braves are facing critical roster decisions ahead of Major League Baseball's July 30 trade deadline. With injuries depleting their outfield, including losing Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II, newcomer Jarred Kelenic has stepped up admirably, batting .328 since taking over the leadoff spot. Meanwhile, veteran Adam Duvall has struggled with a .169 average against right-handed pitchers, despite his strong history against lefties. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos, known for pivotal moves in 2021, seeks to bolster the team's outfield depth amid competitive wildcard standings across both leagues, potentially complicating trade negotiations. Blog post This post is built around excerpts from the book The Mistakes That Make Us: Cultivating a Culture of Learning and Innovation. Read more about Toyota, including stories and key lessons learned in the book. Download a free preview of the book From the book: Fear and punishment drive people to get better at hiding mistakes when they could channel that energy into preventing them. When they can't be hidden, repeated mistakes illustrate how punishment accomplishes nothing beyond deflecting blame from leaders. One of my heroes, W. Edwards Deming, who also deeply influenced Toyota executives, shared what may be the most important recommendation in his famed “14 Points for Management”: “Drive out fear, so that everyone may work effectively for the company.”[i] Driving out fear means, in part, that everyone can feel safe to speak up about mistakes and improvement ideas, as discussed in Chapters Five and Six. Leaders can also alleviate the fear of making mistakes, to begin with, when they combine the right methods and mindsets. Starting with mindset, as former Toyota leader Darril Wilburn says, “It's a leader's responsibility to create a system in which people can be successful.” Therefore, it's the leader's responsibility to drive out fear. This includes creating work systems where it's easier to do the right thing and more difficult to make a mistake. This responsibility doesn't fall solely on the shoulders of leaders. They also engage their team members in designing effective mistake-proofing methods. Mistake-proofing, or “poka yoke” in Japanese, is a core method within the Toyota Production System. It's a mindset based on the idea that people want to do good work but are imperfect. So, leaders have an obligation to help. You might not think of Toyota as an entrepreneurial company today, but it started small in 1926 as a manufacturer of weaving looms based on patents held by founder Sakichi Toyoda. One of his key innovations was a mechanism that would automatically stop a loom when a thread broke, preventing it from cranking out more defective cloth. This innovation also led to huge productivity increases. One worker could now oversee upward of 30 to 50 machines, walking over to respond to problems when they were detected instead of having to hover over a single machine continually. Toyota originally used the phrase “baka yoke,” which means “idiot-proofing.” Many decades ago, that term upset a Japanese factory worker who, correctly, complained that they weren't an idiot. We should also avoid saying “fool-proofing” or “dummy-proofing,” regardless of how often we hear them spoken around us. Professor John Grout, the former dean of the Campbell School of Business at Berry College, is an expert on mistakes, receiving some of his early education in the field from Toyota leaders. He thinks mistake-proofing should be called “slip-proofing,” as it's easier to prevent execution errors than bad decisions (planning mistakes). One common slip is closing a file without saving it. The “Are you sure?” dialogue box tries to protect us, but as John points out, we're likely to click “Yes” out of habit. That's a slip on top of a slip–one that's hard to prevent. Using software that continually autosaves your work eliminates that risk (to my benefit, as I write this book in Google Docs). We discuss each guests' work; the different social media platforms; how and why we create Shakespeare content; the benefits of educating through memes; and what makes Shakespeare so dang memeable! Emily Jackoway is an actor, writer, and lifelong Shakespeare nerd. She earned her BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied Shakespeare at the Classical Studio. She is a former contributing writer and social media manager for Shakespeare and literary education website NoSweatShakespeare, which strives to make Shakespeare accessible for audiences and students. She also hosted their podcast, “Scurvy Companions,” which discusses Shakespeare in all his facets with actors, writers, directors, scholars, stage combat professionals and more. Favorite past roles include Juliet, Puck, and Iago. Carson Brakke is a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and is writing her dissertation on representations of hospitality in early modern English literature. In addition to hospitality, her research interests include domesticity, food studies, and women's writing. You can find her @glutenbergbible, where she's always looking to chat with more people about research, academia, and the weird and surprising sides of early modern English literature! Micaela Mannix considers herself a jack of all Shakespeare. She is the artistic director of Bowls with the Bard, Denver's stoned Shakespeare company, and she hosts their podcast. Stephanie Crugnola has spent a very long time yelling about Shakespeare and how to start making it fun, accessible, responsible, and engaging for people who live in the 21st century. She has her MA in Early Modern English from King's College, London where she learned niche-ier words to yell with. Now, she hosts the Protest too Much podcast (@p2mpod): a Shakespeare showdown with a new guest each week and runs Walking Shadow Shakespeare Project (@wsshakes), a company focused on interactive educational performance opportunities and one-rehearsal pop-up productions. In today's episode, we are joined by the brilliant Dr. Mia Escott to embark on a journey through the complex intersections of race, Shakespeare, and the early modern era. Dr. Escott provides crucial context to help us understand how people of the early modern era were socially categorized based on nationality, religion, and social status. It's a crucial foundation for dissecting Shakespeare's approach to race. Aaron, the enigmatic character from Titus Andronicus, takes center stage. Dr. Escott walks us through the complexities of this character, a Moor in a world where stereotypes and villainy are often intertwined. We explore key moments and lines that shed light on Aaron's character and the racial dynamics at play. We also discuss Blackness and race within Shakespeare's broader canon, as Dr. Escott sheds light on how Shakespeare both humanized and socially othered his Black characters. Woven throughout our discussion are Dr. Escott's insights into how the worlds of academia and theatre can better approach race and discussions of race, especially when it comes to Shakespeare.  Dr. Mia Escott  is an Assistant Professor of English, Rhetoric, and Writing at Berry College. She joined the faculty in 2022 after receiving her doctoral degree in English from Louisiana State University. An Alabama native, she has graduated from Auburn University and the University of Montevallo. Her research and teaching interests include early modern British Literature, Renaissance Drama, Shakespeare, Critical Race Theory, and Women's and Gender Studies. Hello and welcome to the Women Leaders Podcast.  I'm your host, Patti Phillips…    Today we honor and celebrate Juneteenth - the day that enslaved black Americans in Texas became free.  Juneteenth gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come and how far we still have to go.      In this episode, we take you back to a vital conversation that took place at our 2022 National Convention in Kansas City, where Dr. Angel Mason, Director of Athletics at Berry College and one of our Women of Color Circle Leads, sat down with Colorado College President L. Song Richardson, for an honest discussion about race and gender.     President Richardson, a legal scholar, lawyer, and expert on implicit racial and gender bias, has dedicated her career to civil rights and equity.    These two women leaders tap into the importance of celebrating the victories, but also point out the challenges still ahead, and why we need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.  Let's dive into this important conversation…and remember, We Are Women Leaders.

Sherrard Marquise Brooks, a 24-year-old man from Austell, has been indicted by a Cobb grand jury on charges of murder and child abuse in connection to the death of his one-month-old daughter, Nevaeh Brooks. Smyrna police responded to alleged child abuse at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in November 2021, where Nevaeh's mother, Alissa Marchand, had taken her. Nevaeh was found to have extensive brain hemorrhages and bruises all over her body. Brooks claimed his daughter had no visible injuries, but medical records showed otherwise. Nevaeh was pronounced dead in November 2021, and the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office concluded her death was due to non-accidental trauma. Brooks is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. Derek Price II, a junior at Kennesaw State University, has received a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater scholarship for his academic excellence in science, mathematics, and engineering. He is one of 417 recipients chosen this year and the fifth KSU student to receive this honor. Price, a mechanical engineering major, has a strong passion for math and science, and his research in the field of aerospace engineering has been widely praised. He hopes to inspire the next generation of underrepresented students to pursue STEM careers and plans to continue his research in aeronautics, controls, and robotics at a national laboratory while pursuing a Ph.D.Top of Form Chris Kirk, former Etowah High School and University of Georgia standout, is making his first appearance at the Masters since 2016. Kirk had struggled with alcoholism and depression and had to take time off to rehabilitate. He returned to the PGA Tour in 2019 and has since posted four top 10 finishes, currently sitting at seventh on the FedEx Cup points list and ranked No. 32 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Kirk won his first tournament in almost a decade at the Honda Classic and earned a spot in the Masters. This will be his fourth Masters start, playing with Abraham Ancer and Keegan Bradley on Thursday at 10:06 a.m. Dr. Victor Bledsoe, pastor of Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, has named Sheila Langford as the principal of Shiloh Hills Christian School. Langford, a Georgia native, received her bachelor's in Education from Berry College in 1993. She earned a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Jacksonville State in 2005. She recently earned a master's degree in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary. She has dedicated 28 years to Christian education. She wrote “The Georgia Play,” where students learned and performed the history of Georgia. She also wrote a middle school curriculum that would guide 6th, 7th and 8th graders through the entire Bible in three years. In its first public meeting before a city board, developer Bridger Properties received approval to convert a small parking lot at the Marietta Station office complex to a public plaza, and give a facelift to its stores along Church Street. The city's Historic Board of Review voted unanimously to approve the design at its Monday night meeting, with board member Chris Brown absent. Bridger can now proceed with its plans to replace a 22-spot parking lot along the Mountain to River Trail into a park, and spruce up its Church Street properties with new paint, doors, awnings and other features. The developer has more dramatic plans to change downtown, however. Bridger, which owns more than four acres of downtown real estate, is looking to build a 135-unit, 84-foot-tall apartment building off Marietta Square. The historic board is scheduled to hear that proposal and vote on the apartment building's appearance at its May 1 meeting. The Cobb Planning Commission has delayed a proposal to build 20 homes on the site of a historic log cabin on Post Oak Tritt Road in east Cobb. The proposal by Kenneth Clary has been met with concerns from the public about maintaining the historical significance of the property, which includes the one-room log cabin, constructed in the early 19th century. The cabin is uninhabitable, but the historic preservation group Cobb Landmarks has been working to save it. The delay is due to a lack of information from the applicant, and the proposal will be heard at a later date. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews        -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com      See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This month we discuss William Alexander Percy's memoir, Lanterns on the Levee, first published in 1941. Percy lived a full and extraordinary life, beautifully captured in this book. A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Percy writes as a witness of the “disintegration of that moral cohesion of the South.” He was by turns a teacher, lawyer, poet, soldier, planter and adoptive father. We discuss Percy's portrait of the class dynamics of the south, race relations, the emergence of populist political currents, his experiences in the first World War, and his peculiar aristocratic stoicism. We conclude with some reflections on how Will Percy might have influenced his more famous cousin and adoptive son, the novelist Walker Percy. Our guest is Elizabeth Amato. Elizabeth is an associate professor of political science at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. She earned her bachelor's degree at Berry College and her doctorate at Baylor University. Her first book is The Pursuit of Happiness and the American Regime where she discusses the writings of Tom Wolfe, Walker Percy, Edith Wharton, and Walker Nathaniel Hawthorne. Her scholarly interests include politics, literature, film, happiness, moral education, and American political thought. She has written on Walker Percy and his critique of the alienating character of the American pursuit of happiness.

https://youtu.be/sDgfh4qilo4 Whereas Marx rejected chattel slavery and extrapolated a long historical march to an eventual socialist reordering through revolutionary upheaval, Fitzhugh saw a readily available alternative. “Slavery is a form, and the very best form, of socialism,” he explained. Wage labor, he predicted, would be forever insufficient to meet the needs of the laborer due to deprivation of his products from his skill. Slavery, to Fitzhugh's convenience, could step in and fill the gap through the paternalistic provision of necessities for the enslaved, allegedly removing the “greed” of wage exploitation from the process. Since slaves became the charge of the slave master and were placed under his care for food and shelter, Fitzhugh reasoned that “slaves consume more of the results of their own labor than laborers at the North.” Plantation slavery, according to this contorted line of thinking, thereby mitigated the “exploitation” of wage labor capitalism and returned a greater portion of the posited surplus value. In the Marxian counterpart, a socialist state fulfills a similar function. - Phillip W. Magness, The Anti-Capitalist Ideology of Slavery Phillip W. In this first episode of the new season, we will be discussing the fallout from AHA president James Sweet's apology for being honest about The 1619 Project and the issues of presentism. The issues of presentism are glaring and it undermines the study of history and the integrity of those who practice it. The president of the American Historical Association, James H. Sweet, wrote a column for the AHA addressing the problem. This created an uproar and the Twitter mob came after him. The Left created such a stir that Sweet bowed to their pressure and issued an apology, which is now above the column he wrote. Phil Magness wrote an article for the American Institute for Economic Research entitled “The Suicide of the American Historical Association" about how Sweet's Soviet-style apology is a picture perfect representation of the ills we see in the industry of history. Phillip W. Magness is the Director of Research and Education at the American Institute for Economic Research and a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute.
