Few figures have shaped modern American soccer more profoundly than Alan Rothenberg ("The Big Bounce: The Surge That Shaped the Future of U.S. Soccer") — and in this revelatory conversation, he tells the story in his own words. Best known as the founding architect of Major League Soccer and the driving force behind the record-breaking 1994 FIFA World Cup, Rothenberg's influence on the game in the United States stretches back decades earlier than most fans realize. Long before MLS kicked off in 1996, he was immersed in the sport's early, fragile professional era. In the late 1960s, Rothenberg worked alongside Jack Kent Cooke in the United Soccer Association, helping operate the Los Angeles Wolves — an ambitious effort to import top international clubs to American audiences. He later held a brief ownership stake in the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League, gaining firsthand insight into the promise and ultimate collapse of pro soccer's first boom-and-bust cycle in the U.S. A pivotal turning point came when Rothenberg ran the soccer competition for the 1984 Summer Olympics. At a time when many doubted the American market, the tournament drew unexpectedly strong crowds — helping persuade FIFA that the United States could successfully host a World Cup. As president of the United States Soccer Federation from 1990 to 1998, Rothenberg delivered on that promise. The 1994 World Cup became the most financially successful in history to that point, and he fulfilled the bid commitment to launch MLS — creating the stable Division I league that had eluded the country for generations. He also chaired the 1999 Women's World Cup, another watershed moment. Big changes are coming to Ohio high school sports. Several schools just announced a major realignment that will create a new 18-school conference spanning multiple counties. This move is sending shockwaves through as many as four or five other leagues, forcing schools to scramble to find new conference homes. Local rivalries that have existed for decades could vanish, leaving communities and teams to rethink competition, travel, and scheduling.In this episode, we break down the impact on the Eastern Buckeye Conference, which had been a tight-knit league for over 40 years. With nearby schools now moving to the new conference, teams will have to navigate new opponents, longer travel, and potential gaps in their schedules. The days of consistent local matchups, community pride, and accessible games may be fading, and it raises questions about how high school sports coverage can adapt.We also discuss the broader implications: How will these moves affect basketball, football, and other sports? Send us a textHave you heard about the latest thing in running challenges, the Burrito League? A year ago, Jamil Coury, owner of the race directing company Aravaipa Running, ran back and forth in front of a Chipotle in Tempe, AZ expressly to get them to give him a year's worth of burritos. Back and forth, back and forth. And he succeeded. That was the genesis this January of the Burrito League. Leagues have sprung up all over the country. The idea is to run as many segments on Strava that runners can during the month of January. The segments are .25 mile or less. Some are on city streets, back and forth, back and forth. There is one going as we speak just two miles from my house that is going back and forth on a fairly busy, unscenic street. There is now a Burrito League world headquarters in Tempe where they are tracking daily results as runners are logging marathons or more every day at all hours of the day. My friend TJ Harms-Synkiew is running one on the original course in Tempe, which is along a busy thoroughfare and they have to cross the street twice during every segment, which has led to a few car vs. runner encounters. As of this recording, he is in second-place with more than 2300 segments, or about 575 miles on the same stretch of pavement. There are now prizes such as entries into Aravaipa-hosted races like the Cocodona 250, a reward worth a couple of thousand dollars, plus shoes from sponsoring companies, and importantly, a year's supply of burritos from local stores. In this episode, I've gotten a report from the course in Manitou Springs, Colorado with my Black Men Run brother Diarra Cropper, who will fill us in on the whys, the hows, and the ups and downs of the Burrito League there in this picturesque town at the foot of Pikes Peak. This Burrito League is creating a community while running laps around the parking lot of the Buffalo Lodge, and even townspeople who are not running are joining in on the, uh, fun.
