A meandering collection of creative outpouring from today. Its been about a week since my last attempt at music creation. Everything has been weird lately, plus it was my 44th birthday last friday. Today I finally forced myself back into the process of creation in my studio. I started by making some rather dry and crackly dissonant guitar textures which i then scanned through a print of what I had created and resampled bits and refrains in various ways, creating chords, odd textures, unexpected combinations. drums, synths & guitars were added to some of the sketches, which turned into various iterations on an invisible theme. then i made some more micro songs. I got back into a groove of sorts. I hope your weird world is well, that you continue to create, that you enjoy these micro-songs and that you consider sponsoring via https://www.patreon.com/adamforkner or https://anchor.fm/adamforkner --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support
I recently watched the Miles Davis documentary put together by PBS and available on netflix, among other sources. It re-ignited my life-long hero worship of Miles, reminded me why I chose to learn the trumpet as a kid, reminded me how much of an influence he has been on the core values of artistic expression I still aspire to in my own very small way. Although it was the In A Silent Way/Bitches Brew era Miles that forever changed the way I think about music when I was a teen, in my mid-life it has been his late-period, final burst of creative energy which fascinates me. One reason I keep coming back to Miles' late 80s energy is the outfits. The outfits are amazing. Another reason is that he seemed more open to talking about his process, somehow more humble and open while shrouded in garish 80s plumage. But underneath, above, around and beyond all of these things is the music - a fascinating approach to the modern synthesized sounds of the times, It might be so much projection onto the past, but he seemed unafraid to embrace the strange near-tepid mauve MIDI tones of the day and still come up with something subtle, elusive and sublime. And his paintings... reflecting a sort of afro-funk post modernism and a sense of a return to a willfully playful naïveté . Under all of the pressure to live up to the caricature of the intense, dangerous and adventurous auteur... humbled by health problems..bursting out of a depression that lasted years....he becomes playfully funky, bemused and inspired by his new context. Its an inspiring display of renewal and a return to the joy of growth into the unknown. The music I made for this episode today probably isn't directly related to Miles Davis' 80s period or, more specifically the 15 minute version of Human Nature live in Paris that I have watched a million times over the last couple of years, nor would I ever claim to even attempt to reach anywhere near his heights of genius... regardless, I hope you enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support
27 minute meditative plume of foggy electric piano and guitar swells put thru many layers of a special proprietary blend of refraction, loop mangling, re-sampling, echo and pitch fading and cross dissolve processes to create a blissful yet quietly churning and evolving cloud of sound. Perhaps useful for background, focused meditation or as a dream aid. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support
Season 2 of Clear Acrylic Thought Pattern podcast continues with another wordless, ambient guitar improvisation called "Even Lighter Sleeper", which comes as I continue my personal fascination with - and lively debate with some of my peers - of the Paul Schrader's 1992 film Light Sleeper, starring Willem DaFoe, Susan Sarandon and Dana Delaney. A subtle, quietly disturbing and debatably failed movie about the mid life existential crisis of small time party drug dealers who've stayed in the game long after they should have left. It's got a lot of classic Schrader obsession with a sympathetically broken man, mixed with vague dialog and Ozu-inspired lack of momentum, horrible early 90s blocking, claustrophobically tight framing and awkward, stillted editing. Aesthetically, it's like chewing rocks. But somehow I am completely fascinated by it's almost un-nameable umami flavor qualities. There's no easy nostalgia for its nasty early 90s style, costuming or set design. Its palette is completely gauche compared to, say, the flat-yet-chic neo-noirs of the 80s, or the hard boiled Schrader/Scorsese movies of the 70s. Anyway, maybe the guitar ambience I made after talking to @babyfacedjunkie about the film today is completely unrelated. Regardless, I hope both the movie and the vaguely directionless slightly melancholy and ultimately soothing music I made sit well within your newly weird personal/ societal situation. Roger Ebert said of Paul Schrader's Light Sleeper: "It is filled with great weariness and sadness; the party has been over for a long time, and these old druggies, now approaching middle age, have been left behind. Because they were survivors, because they were more intelligent and honest than most, this is the thanks they get: They continue to work in the scene long after they should have been replaced by a new generation of losers. I've talked to some people who had this or that complaint about the plot of "Light Sleeper," often that they didn't like the way the ending seemed like an ironic echo of "Taxi Driver." This movie isn't about plot, it's about a style of life, and the difficulty of preserving self-respect and playing fair when your income depends on selling people stuff that will make them hate you. In film after film, for year after year, Paul Schrader has been telling this story in one way or another, but never with more humanity than this time." we recommend you watch it and any other Paul Schrader movie and get in contact with me with your thoughts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support

In which we talk to our old friend - Portland experimental stringed instrument player and vocalist Caspar Sonnet. Caspar and I both participated in the experimental sound and word collective Rob Walmart (https://robwalmart.bandcamp.com/), which released several albums of material culled from countless hours of improvised music and poetry - created by a rotating group of Portland freaks - broadcast live in the late 2000s on a now defunct internet radio station called Radi023. Caspar has gone on to create one of the most beguiling and intriguing bodies of work as an experimental and improvised musician, developing "outside techniques" for modified dobro and other acoustic stringed instruments, utilizing a myriad of tools - slide, mallet, rubber ball, sticks, ebows, fingers, hands, feet and his voice - to create a hitherto unknown palette of sound. I particularly love his work with Japanese koto player Kozue Matsumoto wherein the duo stretch the boundaries of their instruments in poetic improvisations that create fascinating cross-streams of the cultural, anthropological histories of their respective instruments. https://youtu.be/Ax9AIY66UyM https://casparsonnet.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/casparsonnet/ Also included - a deep groove psychedelic funk fuzz solo jam I made high on coffee.
