Summer often departs unwillingly, with warm days that linger into autumn. In years to come, the transition will probably take even longer, but eventually the sun sinks ever lower, the days grow shorter, the light dims, and the natural world prepares for the long winter to come: drying, darkening, withering, dropping, and dying — to be reborn. The music of the season slows, darkens, and takes on a more somber affect, echoing the complex colors and diminishing energy of autumn, as the sun withdraws to its winter retreat. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, an electro-acoustic journey in the autumn soundscape, on a program called FALLING LEAVES. Music is by LUDOVICO EINAUDI, JOHANN JOHANNSON, KEVIN KELLER, MARCONI UNION, DIATONIS, TIM STORY & HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS, ROBIN GUTHRIE & HAROLD BUDD, and BRIAN ENO. We interrupt this podcast's regularly scheduled programming for a SPECIAL REPORT:We've made a Krautrock Playlist. The original idea was to have a "song draft": having dug deep enough into Krautrock, we would take turns claiming songs for ourselves. We figured this way we'd learn what each of us likes in particular, and what we like best. What happened is we came up with a list of 44 songs -- FORTY-FOUR -- that generally holds together not just as a cohesive cross-section of the genre (with apologies to Popol Vuh), but also as one hell of a mix to queue up on Spotify.Did we hit all the good stuff? Hell, no, and we know we have much more to learn and explore. But we made a good start. Some stats, for those who are interested:Song counts by artist: Can (7!), Kraftwerk (5), Neu! (5), Faust (4), Harmonia (4), La Düsseldorf (4), Amon Düül II (2), Cluster (2), Guru Guru (2), Moebius + Plank (2), Agitation Free (1), Amon Düül (1), Ash Ra Tempel (1), Brainticket (1), Holger Czukay (1), Tangerine Dream (1), Xhol Caravan (1).Song counts by credited musicians: Klaus Dinger (11), Holger Czukay (10), Michael Rother (10), Dieter Moebius (8), Hans-Joachim Roedelius (6).
In the spring of 1973, guitarist Michael Rother looks on in two old acquaintances at their ramshackle farmhouse/ recording studio in Forst. Rother hopes to tour the UK with his current band, Neu!, and he *thinks* Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster might provide just the juice he needs for his live act ...Now what was it John Lennon said about life and making other plans? The Neu! tour never materialized, and Rother's trip to the country yielded only Krautrock's preeminent supergroup, in the form of HARMONIA. Harmonia introduced Rother's discipline, structure, and guitar to the Cluster duo's improvisational synth subversion, and boy, oh boy were the results terrific. The clash of work styles meant it couldn't last, but for three years at least, Harmonia were arguably "the world's most important rock band" (h/t B. Eno).Join us as we tell the Harmonia story, giving specific attention to the band's sparkling 1975 release, Deluxe!
Episode 85 Rain Music Playlist Dean Evenson, “Thunder Intro” from Forest Rain (1993 Soundings of the Planet). 0:28 Ulrich Schnauss, “Molfsee” from Far Away Trains Passing By (2002 City Centre Offices). Written and produced by German artists Ulrich Schnauss. Schnauss is also a current member of Tangerine Dream, joining in 2014 and working with a renewed lineup since the death of original TG member Edgar Frose in 2015. 8:07 Ana Roxanne, “It's A Rainy Day On The Cosmic Shore” from ~ ~ ~ (2019 Leaving Records). Limited edition cassette release. Ana Roxanne is an intersex Southeast Asian musician born and raised in the Bay area. Some low-fi and hi-fi rain sounds and synthesis. 5:03 Paul Beaver and Bernard Krause, “Ragnarök” from Ragnarök (1969 Limelight). The duo's first album of electronic music following the release of their Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music (1968). They feature the Moog Modular synthesizer throughout and use it to synthesize the sounds of rain and thunder on this track. 3:22 Dean Evenson, “Thunder Streams” from Forest Rain (1993 Soundings of the Planet). Everson has been producing soothing electronic and flute sounds for many years, this example is from 1993 and includes rain and thunder effects. Native and silver flutes, keyboards, Dean Evenson; harp, Dudley Evenson; cello, Jonathan Kramer; guitar, Tim McHugh; percussion, Stuart Glasser. 6:20 Mystic Moods Orchestra, introductory sounds of the storm and the sea from One Stormy Night (1966 Phillips). 0:52 Steve Birchall, “Summer Memories” from Reality Gates (1973 Poseidon Electronic Music Studio). An obscure and interesting album of privately produced electronic music from the early 1970s. Billed as "electronic meditations by Steve Birchall." Equipment used was a potpourri of systems, effects, and an EMS VCS-3 synthesizer: Ampex mm 1000 16 track recorder; DBX noise reduction; Spectrasonics console; Studer A-80 recorder; Eventide Clockworks Instant Phaser; Cooper Time Cube; EMT reverb; Neumann VMS 70-SX68 computerized lathe; EMS VCS-3 (Putney) synthesizer. 10:49 Agostino Nirodh Fortini (Nirodh), “Aquatic Round” from Suoni Immaginari (2020 Black Sweat Records). Italian artist and release. Composed, recorded, and produced by Agostino Nirodh Fortini. 2:52 Mystic Moods Orchestra, “A Dream" from One Stormy Night (1966 Phillips). In the mid-sixties, recording engineer and sound recordist Brad Miller had the brilliant idea of combining the recorded sounds of nature with sweeping, orchestral renditions of popular music. This was a series of albums intended as background mood music for couples. The subtitle on the cover of One Stormy Night is “Whoever you are, you hold in your heart the memory of…One Stormy Night.” On the back cover, it says, “A spectacular thunderstorm, the sound of rain and romantic music combine to create One Stormy Night. The Mystic Moods Orchestra has many releases in to the early 1970s, at least two of which utilized the Moog Modular synthesizer. This album, however, is pure field recordings creatively combined with music. 4:16 Sanford Ponder, “Frontier” from Etosha - Private Music In The Land Of Dry Water (1985 Private Music). Arranged, produced, written, Fairlight CMI Synthesizer, Yamaha DX-7 Synthesizer, Roland GR-707 Synthesizer, Sanford Ponder; piano, Clyde Criner. 9:37 D. Emmanuel, “Rain Forest Music” from Rain Forest Music (1981 North Star Productions). Private recording of electronic and acoustical music with field recording sound effects. Composed, arranged, performed, recorded by, Yairi Acoustical Guitar, Effects, 3 Sequential Circuits Pro-One Synthesizers, Crumar organ, J. D. Emmanuel. Recorded at Emmanuel's studio in Houston. Tropical birds were recorded at Houston Zoo Tropical Bird Aviary. “Rain and surf, gifts from Mother Nature. This music can be used for deep relaxation, meditation and as background for massage and counseling.” 22:00 Thom Holmes, thunder record skip from a Mystic Moods Orchestra album. 0:55 Hans-Joachim Roedelius, “Regenmacher” from Durch Die Wüste (Through the Desert) (1978 Sky Records). Percussion, Bass, Keyboards, Hans-Joachim Roedelius; Synthesizer (Synthesizermelodie), Möbius; EMS Synthi, Percussion, Konrad Plank. Recorded and mixed with Konrad Plank in his studio in May 1976, small changes made in January 1978 prior to release. A German electronic composer and member of Cluster in this first solo album transitions to a period of acoustic music, but there are synths being used on this track. 6:36 Thom Holmes, rolling, distant thunder, field recording. 0:59 Yavomag, Rubikdice & Chilx, “Tokyo Rain” from The Ronin EP (2022 Yavomag, Rubikdice & Chilx). House music with a rainy vibe. 2:23 Thom Holmes, crack of thunder field recording.0:52 Dean Elliott And His Orchestra, “Rain” from Zounds! What Sounds! (1962 Capitol). A funny relic from the days when mixing sounds effects into music was a fresh idea. Very cleverly edited by Phil Kaye; Producer, John Palladino. 2:49 Thom Holmes, “Rain Drone” an alternate version and test for a track I later released called Requiem for the Rain (2016 not released). In this piece, I started with the sound of rainfall that I recorded and then processed it using the synthesizer component of MetaSynth to transform the raindrops and downpour into drones and harmonic points. All of the sounds in this work are derived from processing the sound of rain. 12:29 Thom Holmes, thunder, field recording. 1:15 Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch, “Rain” from Blade Runner 2049 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)(2017 Epic). Cello, Simone Vitucci, Vocals, Tristan Schulze; Guitar, Owen Gurry; exotic instruments, Chas Smith; Musical Assistance, Cynthia Park; Soundtrack Album Produced By, Ashley Culp, Kayla Morrison, Michael Hodges; Synth Programming, Hans Zimmer; Sampling Team, Raul Vega; Digital Instruments Design, Mark Wherry; Synth Design, Howard Scarr; Vocals, Avi Kaplan. 2:26 Opening and closing messages voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my blog for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

For this weeks show I spoke to legendary German musician and composer, Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Roedelius has had a long and varied music career. In 1971 he co-founded Cluster with Dieter Moebius, and in 1973 Roedelius and Moebius formed Harmonia with Michael Rother, a previous guest on the Synthetic Dreams Podcast. His music has influenced countless musicians, including David Bowie and Brian Eno, who worked with Cluster in 1977 for the album, Cluster and Eno. It was a real honour to speak to such an icon of electronic music.
Today's guest deejay is Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Last month Roedelius's “Wenn Der Südwind Weht” appeared on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. On a lark, I sent Roedelius an email inviting him to guest deejay on Soundwave. Roedelius musician and composer and has performed and recorded with kosmische musik bands Kluster, Cluster , and Harmonia and has a long-spanning solo career. The pandemic has not slowed Roedelius down at all. Just last weekend he did a surprise live stream concert , and in May, he'll release a new album, Weites Land, that he recorded with Alexander Czjzek. Roedelius “Verweht” Eno Moebius Roedelius “The Belldog” Cluster “Dem Wanderer” Roedelius “Stridekid” Roedelius “Poetry” Roedelius “Five Stations” Hans Joachim Roedelius “Hoch Zu Ross” Arvanitis & Roedelius “Lovesong” Roedelius “Lustwandel” Harmonia “Monza (Rauf Und Runter)” Cluster “Sowiesoso” Roedelius “Leicht gemacht” Eno Moebius Roedelius “Base Apex” Roedelius “Toujours” Roedelius “Die Gunst der Stunde” Roedelius “Gefällig” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message
On today's episode I talk to musician Hans-Joachim Roedelius. A pioneer in the field of electronic music, Hans-Joachim Roedelius is considered one of the founders of contemporary popular electronic music. Born in Berlin in 1934, Hans-Joachim starred as a child in a number of UFA films, and during the war was an unwilling member of the German Youngsters in the Hitler Youth, membership being mandatory for all boys from the age of ten. During this time, he also appeared in several propaganda films. He fled Berlin in 1943, moving from one place to another before being conscripted into the National People's Army of East Germany. Again he took flight, only to end up in prison. WHen he got out, he trained as a male nurse, then as a hospice orderly. Having relocated from East to West Berlin, he went on to meander through Europe (as a thatcher, detective, masseur, bartender, janitor and many other things), before finally becoming a freelance artist, with avant-garde music his prime focus. In 1968, Hans-Joachim co-founded the music commune known as "Human Being" and co-formed Zodiak Free Arts Lab, the center of Berlin's underground culture at the time, with conceptual artist Conrad Schnitzler. He formed Cluster a year later, and then Harmonia with Neu! guitarist Michael Rother. In the decades since then, he recorded dozens upon dozens of albums, both solo and in collaboration with everyone from Brian Eno to Tim Story (their album Lunz 3 from 2019 is spectacular), and his latest album Drauf Und Dran, an album of piano compositions, was released late last year. Episode 26 Not Tangerine Dream--Revisited German Electronic Groups and Connections in the 1970s Playlist Eberhard Schoener, “Polonaise” in three parts, from Destruction Of Harmony - The Living Sound Of Synthesizer Based On Bach & Vivaldi (1971 Ariola). Composed/interpreted by, arranged by, Moog Modular synthesizer, Eberhard Schoener. Wolfgang Riechmann, “Abendlicht” from Wunderbar (1978 Sky). Voice, electric violin, guitar, electric piano, bass, ARP 2600, ARP Odyssey, ARP Sequencer, Röhrophon, electronic drums, Wolfgang Riechmann. Kraftwerk “Heimatklänge” from Ralf & Florian (1973 Philips). Vocals, keyboards, strings, wind instruments, drums, electronics, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter. Stockhausen, “Side IV, Groups II and III” from Sternklang (Park-Music For Five Groups). For vocalists, instruments and electronics. From the notes: “The composition is written for groups of singers and instrumentalists, which are widely separated from each other spatially. The groups should be able to hear each other, above all, when a group has a pause. The musicians must also be able to regulate the overtones of the played and sung sounds, as these are described exactly. We therefore ask the listening participants to keep the silence that is necessary for the musicians.” Kraftwerk “Tongebirge” from Ralf & Florian (1973 Philips). Vocals, keyboards, strings, wind instruments, drums, electronics, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter. Peter Baumann, “Meadow Of Infinity (Part 2)” from Romance 76 (1976 Virgin). Composed, produced, and played by Peter Baumann. Used a custom-built synthesizer provided by Projekt Electronic Berlin. Cluster, “Seltsame Gegend” from Curiosum (1981 Sky). Music by, produced, and played by Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Wolfgang Riechmann, “Weltweit” from Wunderbar (1978 Sky). Voice, electric violin, guitar, electric piano, bass, ARP 2600, ARP Odyssey, ARP Sequencer, Röhrophon, electronic drums, Wolfgang Riechmann. Produced by Conny Plank. Music by, organ, synthesizer, vocals, percussion, Klaus Schulze. Archive Mix In which I play two tracks at the same time to see what happens. Eberhard Schoener, “Overture” from Destruction Of Harmony - The Living Sound Of Synthesizer Based On Bach & Vivaldi (1971 Ariola). Composed/interpreted by, arranged by, Moog Modular synthesizer, Eberhard Schoener. Peter Baumann, “Meadow Of Infinity (Part 1)” from Romance 76 (1976 Virgin). Composed, produced, and played by Peter Baumann. Used a custom-built synthesizer provided by Projekt Electronic Berlin. “Meadow Of Infinity Part 1” included members of the Philharmonic Orchestra Munich, conducted by H. Baumann.

when i went to see german electronic music pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius at zebulon*, it was filled with hipsters eager to be seen appreciating an OG. i sat in the back and somehow dropped my wallet. Upon realizing it was gone, the security staff found it: on top of the men's toilet & minus about $400 in cash! This episode is an ode to collaborations and their importance in the everyday creative practice. The first and most significant treated in this episode is the life-long partnership between Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, the two prolific pioneers of teutonic electronic music and fathers of Krautrock. They’ve been working together, since the early 70’s, making music as a duo as well as teaming up with Conrad Schnitzler (under the name Kluster), Michael Rother (forming Harmonia), Conny Plank, Brian Eno (in Harmonia 76), Gerd Beerbohm, Karl Renziehausen and many more. The sonic heritage that they created influenced the subsequent generations of german artists, including some who are featured in this episode. Last but not least, this tracklist is a brief extract from the rich catalogue of the defunct Hamburg based label Sky Records, born from the experience of Brain that today evolved into Bureau B. The episode features: Dennis Young, Eno Moebius Roedelius, Hearts No Static, Roedelius & Schneider, Asmus Tietchens, Conrad Schnitzler, Cluster, Moebius & Beerbohm, Harald Grosskopf, Vono, Faust and Qluster.
The end of a year is a popular moment to release a (label) compilation. Sometimes to look back, sometimes to look ahead.... and sometimes just because it's compilation time. Here's an (incomplete!) overview of some recent compilations presenting hours (and more hours) of listening pleasure. VARIOUS ARTISTS - ILLUMINATIONS II Dronarivm kicks off with this New Year Charity Compilation. No less than 30 track and almost three hours of music, priced ridiculously low to begin with... but of course you will want to pay more because of the amount of music, ánd because the profits go to 4Paws for Ability, an organisation that 'enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.' (You can also donate directly of course, but why would you when you're offered a batch of quality music in the process?) The thirty artists presented here show why Dronarivm has become one of the most important labels in the ambient/experimental electronic genre. It's an impressive array of which I will only mention a few names: Aaron Martin, Bruno Sanfilippo, Loscil, Jacaszek, Machinefabriek, Endless Melancholy, Legiac, Offthesky, Olan Mill, Sven Laux, Anne Chris Bakker, Antonymes, Giulio Aldinucci, Pleq, Hakobune, Pausal Chihei Hatakeyama. And that are just 17/30. Even more impressive is the fact that all these tracks are exclusive - they have not appeared on earlier releases before. So this is what we call a 'no-brainer'! If you missed the first (2017) edition of Illuminations with another 28 tracks, you can still download it. It is a Name-Your Price release, but I strongly suggest to double your donation for Illuminations II. Simply because. Illuminations II (The New Year 2018 charity compilation) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - FROM HERE TO TRANQUILITY, VOL. 8: THE DARKENED PATH On a somewhat darker note, we find #8 in the From Here To Tranquility series on Silent Records, curated and founded by Kim Cascone. Not specifically an end-of-year release, by the way, but edition 8 in the From Here To Tranquility series. This edition 'addresses the pervasive darkness we find in the world today', and does so with 80 minutes of contemplative soundscapes with a retro-touch by Scott Gibbons, Kris Force, Chris Meloche, Dead Voices on Air, Michal Seta, Pragma, David Metcalfe, Legion Of Green Men, Aume, Meterpool, Mike Rooke and David Lee Myers. Not the most familiar names perhaps, and the music can be quite different in nature (a quiet atmospheric field recording track by Chris Meloche can easily be followed by a rather aggressive noise track from Dead Voices on Air), but you can simply count on Kim Cascone's experience in selecting quality sounds. From Here to Tranquility - Volume 8 (the darkened path) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - STEEL - DRAGON'S EYE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY Not exactly a year-in-retrospect compilation, but an album to celebrate the twelve years of existence since Yann Novak relaunched his father's record label Dragon's Eye Recordings. The 'steel' in the title is 'named after the traditional eleventh anniversary gift (due to miscalculation and a love for the cover art by Jake Muir)'. A 'variety of styles, processes, practices, techniques, and most importantly points of view' is presented in this Name-Your-Price download featuring unreleased tracks by artists that recently released work on the label. Such as: Steve Pacheco, Tobias Hellkvist, Robert Crouch, Yann Novak, Jake Muir, Fabio Perletta, Geneva Skeen, Mark Kate and wndfrm. 78 Minutes of sheer minimalist joy. Steel: Dragon's Eye Twelfth Anniversary by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - RUSTED TONE SAMPLER I Rusted Tone Recordings does not look back to 2017 because it did not exist in 2017. It is a new independent label, curated by James Armstrong, 'specialising in ambient, drone and experimental music'. Judged by this introduction sampler the label will definitely be worth keeping an eye on: it introduces artists that will be releasing albums on Rusted Tone in the coming year. Think: Darren Harper, James Osland, Wil Bolton, Green Kingdom, Spheruleus - along less familiar names like Gallery Six & Oblivia, Net, Kepier Widow, Saltings and Kevin Buchland. Suffices to say this introduction succeeds in raising interest for the label! This, too, is a Name-Your-Price download if you want. But please keep in mind that proceeds 'will go towards supporting physical releases and sustaining Rusted Tone Recordings.' Rusted Tone Recordings: Sampler Vol. 1 by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRENZWELLEN I A somewhat different beast (and with that I mean considerably less ambient) is this massive compilation supporting the German radio show Grenzwellen, hosted by Ecki Stieg and broadcasted on Radio Hannover. Grenzwellen started in 1987 so it exists for more than thirty years now! It can be heard every wednesday for three hours starting at 9 pm CET via the Radio Hannover livestream. But even if you can't listen to their show this compilation is a great introduction to the music that can be heard on this show. Almost 4 hours of all kinds of experimental/electronic music in a mix of well- and lesser-known artist. I won't mention them all, but here are just a few of the names that I recognise: Giulio Aldinucci, Gabi Delgado, Ulrich Schnauss, CEEYS, Marsen Jules Trio (with a 15 minute string version of Étoiles de la Nuit), Bersarin Quartett, Bartosz Dziadosz, Hecq, Arovane,Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sven Laux, Sankt Otten, Markus Guentner, Richard Chartier, Hotel Neon. 31 Tracks, and most of them previously unreleased. Grenzwellen host and compilation curator Ecki Stieg advises to play the compilation in its entirety: "please listen in the order given. Don't use the random button!." Grenzwellen Eins by Grenzwellen VARIOUS ARTISTS - MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS And, while on the subject of massive compilation projects this one cannot stay unmentioned. Only recently I became aware of a series of (free download) releases by the Mahorka netlabel called "Music for Elevators." A nice reference to many ambient "Music for ..." releases, as well as to 'Elevator Music' - which is usually referring to anonymous 'Muzak'. The first edition of this series was released way back in 2002, followed by Vol. 2 in 2005, Vol. 3 in 2007, Vol. 4 in 2012. The three-part set Vol. 5, which is said to conclude the series, was released in 2017 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). You can still find the complete set online: the first four editions can be found on Archive.org (free downloads), the three-part Vol. 5 on Bandcamp (Name-Your-Price). So that is quite an impressive batch of unknown music to discover. Unknown - because in the tradition of netlabels, Mahorka presents the work of artists that are largely unknown - with the occasional exception depending on how 'deep' you are into the scene. "You are on board for a pushing all kinds of boundaries trip through what ambient music can be and what can be ambient music." 'Ambient' is not a very strict definition here, probably 'experimental electronic' would have been a more appropriate label. There are quite a few tracks that would probably scare the hell out of any ordinary citizen who got stuck in an elevator. But in a collection like this, everyone will find a lot of sounds to his/her liking! Music For Elevators Vol.5 (Part 1) by Various Artists
It's that time of the year again - end of the year Best Of list time! It's always a difficult task to pick albums for one of these lists. But it's also fun because I get to sort through a bunch of music and it's definitely cool to have a look at other lists and discover a ton of things I missed. There is no way these lists are close to being definitive. A lot of ambient releases can tend to blur from one into the next and the difference between making the list and not making it can boil down to what mood I was in when I first heard the album. There's so much excellent music being released on a weekly basis it's impossible to keep up so this list and mix is just a bunch of stuff that I liked this past year. Here are a few other good year in review lists: http://www.astrangelyisolatedplace.com/blog/2017/12/5/asip-reflection-on-2017 https://irregularcrates.com/2017/12/12/end-of-2017-a-list-and-mix-by-harry-towell/ http://ambientmusicguide.com/best-of-year/best-albums-of-2017/ https://www.popmatters.com/best-ambient-instrumental-albums-2017-2513144740.html?page=2 My best of list is more of a best instrumental music list than just straight ambient. The mix is mostly ambient but the list contains jazz, instrumental & ambient. According to my Spotify data I played a lot of 36 last year so it's appropriate that he's got two albums in the top ten. I guess I'm too lazy to write up comments about all the music except to say that there's a lot of good stuff there. So take some time and hunt down these releases, you won't be disappointed. It's hard to properly introduce these two gentlemen because their lifes have intersected with a massive amount of history both musically and beyond. Hans-Joachim Roedelius was a founding member of both Cluster and Harmonia, two of the most influential groups to emerge from Germany in the 20th century. Christoph Müller is a composer, a producer, and soundtrack artist who entered the charts in the late 80's and played a significant role in moving the world music genre in an innovative and futuristic direction. We had the pleasure of meeting them both after their concert at Roskilde Festival 2016. Interview: Sandra S. Borch Edit: Anne Dalby and Sandra S. Borch

For those of you who don't know: Conny Plank was a German record producer, musician, audio engineerer and secret member of many of those so-called Krautrock Bands until he died way too early in 1987. One of his early friends and collaborators was Hans-Joachim Roedelius, long-time member of Cluster and Harmonia and now – even at the age of 78 – hyperactive with both his solo work and in various collabos like Qluster or his recent project with Lloyd Cole. When Roedelius was in Dresden to play his live set at a special Conny Plank tribute night at Altes Wettbuero, Philipp had the opportunity to talk to him about his relationship to Conny and his work in general. Before that, the Leipzig based DJ and promoter esclé (who was hosting the Conny Plank tribute show with some friends) played a great DJ set with Conny Plank related songs. In fact, every record he played is from Conny Plank's very own record collection. His son was so kind to lend esclé the records for the whole tribute tour. Last but not least you can listen to a track from Credit 00 that he produced for his special Conny Plank live set. Credit could get his hands on a large collection of sample material out of Conny's studio for those tracks. And boy, this live set was hot! But for now, enjoy the radio show! There are slight sound skipping issues on the show every now and then due to the recording system at coloRadio. Sorry for that! UV Funk is a radio show which is broadcasted every third Friday from 9:30 pm to 11:00 pm on Dresden based community radio station coloRadio. Radio listeners in Dresden can tune in to the program on 98,3 or 99,4 MHz. Any other listeners can recall it here. The show is hosted by Philipp Demankowski and is all about stories, interviews and tracks out of the world of Cosmic Electronic Music. And watch out! It's in German. This show was aired on 17th May 2013. More infos and shows here: http://www.uncannyvalley.de/category/radio/ Tracklist: esclé in the mix 1. Mœbius & Plank – Two Oldtimers (Sky) 2. Shock World Service 048 Zero Hour by Neil Higgins 02/12/2012 London, United Kingdom 1. Claude Larson & his Computer Controlled Oscillators - Mountains & Meadows Like a lot of the early synthesizer artists this German producer veers between moments of lush magic & terrible cheesy nonsense, but this is a lovely warm wave of analog atmosphere to kick things off. 2. Tonto's Expanding Head Band - Cybernaut When these synth pioneers started making this music around 1969 there were virtually no reference points for what they were doing. This was just the music that the machines seemed to want to make/ 3. Mike Vickers - Surf Rider This slightly re-edited piece of proto-techno was recorded by a former member of Manfred Mann, and featured on a library music LP on the British KPM label. 4. Sid Bass - Moog Espana The first commercially successful synthesizer record was ‘Switched-On Bach' by Walter (later to become Wendy) Carlos in 1968. It was an attempt to show that the Moog synthesizer could replicate the full palette of sounds of an orchestra. Although it now feels like a full-on novelty record, it pretty much kick started the popularity of the Moog and launched the idea of using synthesizers in popular music. 5. Adrian Wagner - Where Are We Going A hypnotic but slightly bonkers epic from the UK Charisma label – home of Genesis and the Monty Python albums. 6. Cabaret Voltaire - Seconds Too Late Punk might have shattered much of the cosmic pretensions of 70s synthesizer music, but electronic music emerged darker and more experimental after the late 70s. 7. Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company - Ceres Motion This is just a small section of a 15-minute long minimalist journey. It's well worth soaking up the incredibly euphoric full-length version. 8. Kraftwerk - Antenna The Men Machine certainly weren't the first electronic group, but they were the first to sound like they were in complete control of the machines and to create their own unique sound – mysterious and unearthly but totally catchy. 9. Avida - Il Grillo e la Formica Some abrasive but romantic electro madness from early 80s Florence, Italy. This features the great Maurizio Dami. 10. David Bowie - Weeping Wall From the majestic B-side of ‘Low', Bowie's Eno-influenced homage to 1970s German electronic music. 11. Makers - Don't Challenge Me A wonderful, obscure synth-soul classic from a recent compilation ‘Personal Space: Electronic soul from 1974 to 1984'. That's all I know … 12. Suicide - Touch Me These New York electro-punk pioneers took electronic music down a completely different back alley – one littered with junkies, muggers and seedy glamour. 13. Cluster – Caramel Cluster was Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, two of the most legendary figures of 70s German experimental music (OK then, Krautrock – I was trying to avoid using that ridiculous label, but it's inescapable). This warped minimal groove brings to mind a bunch of ecstatic robots dancing in a forest clearing. Anyway, Dies ist verdammt gut… 14. E.M.A.K. - Filmmuzik The E.M.A.K. collective were part of an early 80s second wave of German electronic music. Futuristic techno, minimal, deep house – you can hear the germs of all these movements in this track. Although it is 1982 in Germany and these things don't exist yet, do they? 15. Laurie Anderson - Big Science Famous for taking ‘O Superman', an abstract 8-minute minimal experiment, to the top of the charts – that could happen in 1982. 16. Rhythim is Rhythim - Kaotic Harmony The next chapter is well known … when black kids in the urban decay of Detroit, USA, started to absorb some of these sci-fi sounds from Europe and fused them with the ghosts of soul and disco to create Techno. This is a glimpse of how powerful that fusion could be. 17. Cluster - Rosa Closing with another track from the ‘Zuckerzeit' LP. Deep, sad and otherworldly. Magic stuff.
