We're sneaking in one more Batman movie for our month's theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY and we're doing it in homage to the late Kevin Conroy who voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne in the beloved 90s Batman cartoon “Batman: The Animated Series” The series had a theatrical venture in a critically well regarded animated movie done in the “Animated Series” style and it might the most well crafted Batman story to ever hit the big screen. We're talking about “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” featuring the voice work of the great Kevin Conroy, Dana Delaney & Mark Hamill in yet another legendary Joker performance. Truly the character of Joker really makes actors go for it. Especially the greatest Joker of all time and we are, of course, talking about the Jared Leto Joker who had those awesome tattoos that said things like “Damaged” and “Ha Ha Ha Ha”. God he was so fucking cool. Continuing our ongoing BATMAN ON FILM series, we arrive at the fourth theatrical Batman feature, the first animated one, and quite possibly the single best Batman film ever made: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, a standalone feature based on the classic Animated Series, considered by many to be the definitive portrayal of The Dark Knight. Starring Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, with a new love interest and antagonist in the form of Dana Delaney's Andrea Beaumont, Mask of the Phantasm is a dark, incisive portrayal of the tragedy that is Bruce Wayne, a film noir reimagining of his origin that cuts to the heart of the darkness lying beneath Batman's iconography. It is a truly spectacular film, one that we've mentioned dozens of times before on this show without ever devoting an entire episode to, and it's a real joy to finally rectify that. Milla Jovovich once again with her director husband in yet another movie that does not work. She is Artemis, a leader os a squad dispatched in the Middle East to locate Bravo team and a sand storm whips them away into another world where monsters are huge and plentiful making there weapons useless. She meets the Hunter (Tony Jaa) and, together learn to navigate a harsh and very unforgiving land. Oh! Ron Pearlman is a boat captain with the BEST 80's wig and mullet. So there's that. (3/10) THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN (On Netflix) Mel Gibson and Sean Penn are absolutely the pull in this one, along with Eddie Marsan. Following the birth of the Oxford dictionary- finding the meaning and etymology of every word recorded through history up to current date. Gibson's James Murray is the self taught brilliant mind behind this push and Sean Penn's William Minor is a mentally unwell brilliant man who can help the academic community but needs to be treated and cured. There are at least 2 different movies placed together, possibly three. Well acted, but uninspired otherwise (5/10) GREENLAND (VOD) Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin are the leads in this extinction level film with emotion. This is an emotional drama with a disaster baked around the center. As a nine mile wide comet comes towards Earth, John Garrity (Butler) and his family have been chosen to be sheltered in a classified U.S. military base in Greenland. The selection brings somewhat needed tension among others not selected and certainly helps the plot device problem these films always have. What's different in Greenland is it's not so much style over substance. The substance and heart is there, as well as dazzling special effects that, in 2020, look as real as ever. (7.5/10) MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM (Netflix) This is another one of the wonderful and much celebrated August Wilson's plays to shoot in Pittsburgh. Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman are absolutely at their best in this, electrifying to say the least. Other members of the cast who also really shine are Coleman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts and Jeremy Shamos. This very much an adapted stage plat for the screen. More than a few monologues and one location stays for 10-15 minutes at a time, which never seem as long because of how wonderfully this is directed. Ma Rainey "The Mother of Blues" and horn player Levee are at odds when it's discovered that Levee is using Ma's music to elevate his won status and strike out on his own. If you watch ONE movie this week, let it be Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (9/10) Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion. Guest appearance by Christopher Boughan. This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jose-rodriguez931/support

Season 2 of Clear Acrylic Thought Pattern podcast continues with another wordless, ambient guitar improvisation called "Even Lighter Sleeper", which comes as I continue my personal fascination with - and lively debate with some of my peers - of the Paul Schrader's 1992 film Light Sleeper, starring Willem DaFoe, Susan Sarandon and Dana Delaney. A subtle, quietly disturbing and debatably failed movie about the mid life existential crisis of small time party drug dealers who've stayed in the game long after they should have left. It's got a lot of classic Schrader obsession with a sympathetically broken man, mixed with vague dialog and Ozu-inspired lack of momentum, horrible early 90s blocking, claustrophobically tight framing and awkward, stillted editing. Aesthetically, it's like chewing rocks. But somehow I am completely fascinated by it's almost un-nameable umami flavor qualities. There's no easy nostalgia for its nasty early 90s style, costuming or set design. Its palette is completely gauche compared to, say, the flat-yet-chic neo-noirs of the 80s, or the hard boiled Schrader/Scorsese movies of the 70s. Anyway, maybe the guitar ambience I made after talking to @babyfacedjunkie about the film today is completely unrelated. Regardless, I hope both the movie and the vaguely directionless slightly melancholy and ultimately soothing music I made sit well within your newly weird personal/ societal situation. Roger Ebert said of Paul Schrader's Light Sleeper: "It is filled with great weariness and sadness; the party has been over for a long time, and these old druggies, now approaching middle age, have been left behind. Because they were survivors, because they were more intelligent and honest than most, this is the thanks they get: They continue to work in the scene long after they should have been replaced by a new generation of losers. I've talked to some people who had this or that complaint about the plot of "Light Sleeper," often that they didn't like the way the ending seemed like an ironic echo of "Taxi Driver." This movie isn't about plot, it's about a style of life, and the difficulty of preserving self-respect and playing fair when your income depends on selling people stuff that will make them hate you. In film after film, for year after year, Paul Schrader has been telling this story in one way or another, but never with more humanity than this time." we recommend you watch it and any other Paul Schrader movie and get in contact with me with your thoughts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support

Put Lee, Ellen, Billy, and Dee in a room, add in a pissed-off Dana Delaney with a bunch of guns, and baby, you've got an episode of Galactica going. Matt finds his favorite Galactica writer. Today's Guest: Ben Watkins, creator/showrunner, "Hand of God," producer/writer, "Burn Notice" Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Ben Watkins by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of true believers whose lives are also filled with sex, lies, brutal violence, hypocrisy and old books with the centers carved out to hide thumb drives… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! "Hand of God," an Amazon original series starring Ron Perlman, Dana Delany, Andre Royo, Garret Dillahunt and Emayatzy Corinealdi, created by Ben Watkins The name of the show threw me, no denying it. “Hand of God”? Ron Perlman stars in "Hand of God," now in its second season on Amazon Prime. I’m not a particularly religious guy and the new Amazon Studios series – starring Ron Perlman, Dana Delaney, Andre Royo, Emayatzy Corinealdi, and Garrett Dillahunt – now in its second season, didn’t sound like my kind of show. But then I was asked if I would you like to speak with the showrunner, Ben Watkins—who previously wrote and produced USA’s “Burn Notice? So I said, “Let me check it out.” BEN WATKINS podcast excerpt: "Ron Perlman plays this judge who goes off the rails when his son attempts suicide. He's in a coma. I wanted to explore somebody who becomes a zealot, who becomes focused on one thing." I started watching the first episode. Then the second. Before I knew it, I was halfway through the first season of 10. “Goddammit!” I said to no one in particular. “How many times will I make the mistake of judging a book by its cover, or a movie or TV series by its title?” “Hand of God” is really, really good. In this age of peak TV and 400 new series vying for our time and attention, it’s hard to know what to watch. My wife and I gave up on Amazon’s “Man in the High Tower” but gave USA’s “Mr. Robot” a second chance and were pleased with the decision. You won’t be disappointed if you sample “Hand of God.” BEN WATKINS podcast excerpt: "Emayatzy Corinealdi is a breakout actress. My wife saw her in an independent film called 'Middle of Nowhere.' We told her, 'The character is going to be the moral center for this show; don't judge it just by the (first episode) when you see her having sex with a client.' Emayatzy brings a certain humanity and subtlety to everything she does." "Burn Notice: The Complete Series." Order the box set today by clicking on the DVD Cover above! Key interview moments: • 3:30 "Hand of God" creator and showrunner Ben Watkins explains how star Ron Perlman fits the title of the series; • 15:50 Watkins advises actress Emayatzy Corinealdi not to prejudge her prostitute character by the pilot episode; • 27:36 Who would Watkins choose in the DeathMatch of TV trios? "Tombstone" packed in the stars: Kurt Russel, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton, Dana Delaney, Powers Boothe, Charlton Heston, Jason Priestley, Steven Lang, Billy Bob Thornton and more. And it packed in the action with a relentless shoot-em-up pace. But did it pack as big a punch as we remember? From historical accuracy to production quality, let's cock the hammer on this 90's western and explore some hot topics, including: how many shells and double-barreled shotgun holds, when it's permissible to seek a new wife, how long after an assassination attempt you must wait to play billiards, and the difference between Doc Holliday and Doc Hollywood. Today's Guest: Deborah Calla, screenwriter, producer, A Beautiful Life A Beautiful Life starring Bai Ling. Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD above! I haven’t spoken with her yet, but my sense is that Deborah Calla, who produced and co-wrote the new indie film A Beautiful Life, feels a strong connection to the lead character of Maggie. It’s just a sense, but the character of Maggie, a teenage girl running away from the sexual abuse of her father, doesn’t seem like an emotional story you would want to participate in telling unless it really spoke to your soul. Of course, I could be completely mistaken. Calla, a Brazilian native, first discovered Wendy Hammond’s play, Jersey City, back in 1996. It took a long time to translate Jersey City into A Beautiful Life, but I’m sure there is an audience out there for this alternately harsh and yet tender slice of modern life. DEBORAH CALLA podcast excerpt: "I think this is the best work Bai has ever done. This is a woman who looks amazing with makeup on, amazing without any makeup on. She just has so many different colors and goes through such a journey. I hope this movie will show other producers and directors what she can really do." And Calla found some strong women to fill the lead and featured roles, starting with Angela Sarafyan as Maggie, the lead character, and continuing with Bai Ling as Maggie’s protector, Dana Delaney as her mother and Debi Mazar as a librarian who takes an interest in Maggie. Recently I had the opportunity to catch up with Clancy Brown in a round table scenario. He was attending the 70th Edinburgh International Film Festival to promote the 4K restoration of Highlander. He did a Q&A at the screening, attended a Ceilidh and generally enjoyed being back in Scotland after being away for so long. Joining me on the round table were Matthew from SciFiNow, Dave from Hop and Pop (hasn't launched yet), Michael from Screenkicker, George from an outlet I can't make out from the audio and Claudia from Film News UK and MovieStar Magazine. Everyone had an opportunity to speak and Clancy was more than happy to answer any questions. I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't think of the actress who played the animated version of Lois Lane despite how formative I found that animated show. It was, of course, Dana Delaney. How could I forget that? In fairness, Clancy did too. The 4K restoration of Highlander looks stunning and can be seen a few more times throughout Scotland over the next couple of months. I have listed the places and links to buy tickets should there be any left: 15th July - 18th July - Belmont FilmHouse Aberdeen 18th July -21st July - Edinburgh FilmHouse It is also screening in the Eden Court Inverness from 29th August but it doesn't look like there are listings for that yet. It is also available to own from July 11th from all major outlets. Lastly here's a picture of me with the man himself.
The devil is real. No, seriously. We watched the episode of Body of Proof that confirms that science is bullshit, even if Dana Delaney spends all her days bullying people about it's superiority.
