Escuchar audio

Greetings to all from your recently Venetianized podcaster, now (as the title of today's episode indicates) once again back in the saddle and bringing you the fourth and final of my vacation (or holiday, if you prefer) episodes featuring great sopranos and tenors of the 1960s and 1970s, as compiled by the late great collector and vocal aficionado Ed Rosen. Today is the second of the tenor LPs from that collection and once again features a range of the brightest and best of that era in thrilling live performances: from Richard Tucker and Franco Corelli (both of whom are heard in excerpts from La Fanciulla del West) to Björling, Carreras, Bergonzi, di Stefano, Kraus, Pavarotti, Gedda, and del Monaco singing everything from Nemorino to Siegmund (!) The vocal splendor of these singers is matched by (for the most part) their musical refinement and taste. And if certain of the featured tenors forgets his musical manners, rest assured that the amplitude of their thrilling high notes is suitable compensation! Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

The American writer Rachel Eliza Griffiths creates poetry that resonates with music: she writes about her mother cleaning the house while ‘Pavarotti trembled across the terse sunlight of every room.'As well as poetry, she's written a novel, and her most recent book is a memoir called The Flower Bearers. It deals with loss, including the sudden death of her closest friend. She received the news on what should have been the happiest of days – her marriage to the writer Salman Rushdie. And less than a year later, she found herself beside his hospital bed after the knife attack which nearly claimed his life. But this is no misery memoir – there is the joy of finding her voice as a young poet in New York in the 90s, the strength she gains from the writers who have paved the way, and the music that travels with her.Eliza's music choices include music by Schumann, Bach, Puccini and Nina Simone.

Documentary producer & record collector Jeanne Elfant Festa has made films about The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Pavarotti, Bee Gees and more. Today she discusses her latest movie on Billy Preston — revealing rare archive footage, Olivia Harrison's key role, and Eric Clapton's emotional on-camera tribute and a lot more. Check outtrailer and documentary screenings here Topics Include: Jeanne lost her entire vinyl collection in the Palisades fire. Her family and animals all escaped the fire safely. A custom-built, mathematically designed sound room housed the collection. Rebuilding takes time — the turntable alone hasn't been replaced yet. Music passion began with her Brooklyn-raised parents' rich jazz collection. Her dad snuck into the Apollo Theater via the fire escape. He carried a saxophone, jamming with musicians at the loading dock. The family soundtrack: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker. Jeanne and her dad bonded over Bruce Springsteen's sax player. Her father did house calls exclusively for one patient — Miles Davis. Storytelling instincts came from parents who loved plays, movies, and performance. Her own record collection ranged from Rage Against the Machine to Supertramp. Vinyl's tactile magic: liner notes, textures, and each album's unique smell. Albums are movies — side one plays straight through, no skipping. Documentary filmmaking is passion-driven, not a path to big money. The Foo Fighters doc came from being in the right place. Business partner Nigel Sinclair's credits include Bob Dylan and George Harrison docs. Billy Preston first entered her life through her parents' living room stereo. Filming subjects who've passed requires diaries, archives, and extraordinary research teams. A granddaughter's undeveloped home movies transformed the Beach Boys documentary entirely. A stranger's undeveloped Beatles footage, found under a childhood bed, changed everything. Olivia Harrison unlocked archive footage and connected the team to Ringo and Clapton. Eric Clapton opened up in a way rarely seen on camera. Documentary ethics: three sources minimum, no gossip, no stunt casting ever. The Billy Preston film explores forgiveness, contradiction, and the full human condition. Being able to belt out a tune like Adele or Pavarotti is not just about raw talent. The best singers in the world have to work on their technique—like how to control their breath and develop the stamina to hit note after note for a two-hour concert. But pop stars and opera singers aren't the only vocalists who have figured out how to harness their voices for maximum impact.Death metal vocalists also train their voices to hit that unique guttural register. And those iconic screams are not as easy to master as they might seem.Vocal scientists at the University of Utah are now bringing death metal singers into the lab to try to understand how they make their extreme vocalizations. What they're finding is not only insightful for metalheads, but might also help improve treatment for people with some types of vocal injuries. In a conversation from April, Host Flora Lichtman talks with speech pathologist Amanda Stark, and Mark Garrett, vocal coach and lead singer of the band Kardashev.Read the whole story at sciencefriday.com.Guests: Dr. Amanda Stark is a speech pathologist and vocology researcher at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.Mark Garett is a vocal coach and the lead singer of Kardashev. Until then, it's just electronic tulips with a nice PR team,” said a junk-bond trader I slept with in the '80s, who later asked me about Bitcoin from Sing Sing. This post, like my period, is three months late and  yet another matter AI cannot solve, given my procrastination and sheer laziness. I remind you: I do not have a job, but I also do not have access to cash due to my husband's mob ties. Crypto solves this.Luckily I'm not pregnant, because I can't deal with the weight gain  and no, my lack of blood is not age-related, thank you very much. I've simply been doing laps every morning in the jail swimming pool with some of the loveliest felons from the heyday of trad-fi in the '80s. Whoever claimed crypto had the most criminals clearly never lived through the Boiler Room years of slicked-back junk-bond bros whose foreplay consisted of a dry finger-bang while saying things like “financed raider” and “ramping the stock.” Even after all that, I still can't handle the on-chain mess we have today. Stress level: high.Between Bitcoin's drastic drop blasting through my alimony and child support; yes, I asked for the funds to be in Bitcoin, and yes, that day happened to land on October 10, which historically is the worst week for us Jews,  I remain violently underwhelmed by machine learning.I instead cling to my hardcore, conservative, maximalist American values: the Bitcoin white paper, my Bible pure and pristine collateral with no need for interference. Much like my engagement ring, which was a gift. In this season of greetings, it's important to remember what we're grateful for. My list has been the same since I was thirteen years old: cigarettes, private jets, and Xanax.I digress. My guest today is the following Ivy League contemporary: Kyle O'Brien. He almost married my sister, which would have been awkward given the throbbing sexual tension permeating this episode. I am in awe of Kyle  due to  his knowledge, his Frenchness, his homoerotic encryption, and his commitment to longevity in a country where the biggest moneymaker is suicide prevention and Lexapro. Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot dive into a full-blown Thanksgiving-week celebration of collaborations and mashups, exploring some of the most surprising pairings in music history. From Run-DMC and Aerosmith's culture-breaking “Walk This Way,” to Public Enemy and Anthrax detonating the first true rap-metal crossover, the hosts trace how these unlikely unions reshaped entire genres. They showcase viral mashups like Bob Marley fused with Billy Idol and Slayer reimagined on banjo, bringing both laughter and genuine admiration for the creativity behind them. Brad and Jay share personal concert stories, debate the evolution of rap and metal, wander into classical influences on heavy music, and even highlight Pavarotti performing with Bono and Jon Bon Jovi. The episode winds through punk pits, metal symphonies, techno threads, and childhood nostalgia before closing with the iconic Bowie/Bing Crosby Christmas duet and its hilarious modern recreation. It's a wide-open, energetic hour of music geekery, surprises, and pure audio joy.

Today some real meat and potatoes Italian opera. Oh, wait, perhaps we should call it spaghetti alla bolognese rather than meat and potatoes. So often on the podcast I bring singers to the fore that are not as well known as some of the biggest stars in opera. But today I bring you both Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni, two of the most popular and celebrated Italian opera stars in the history of opera, especially opera in the late twentieth century. As many already know, the two singers both grew up in Modena, where their working-class mothers worked in the same cigar factory; as budding opera singers, they subsequently studied voice with the same teacher in Mantova. They remained lifelong friends and often sang together, especially in La Bohème. In 1980, the two returned to their native Modena where they performed together at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, known since 2021 as the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni. The concert was conducted by Freni's ex-husband Leone Magiera, also a native of Modena. In this concert, they performed duets from their shared repertoire: Elisir d'amore, Traviata, and L'amico Fritz. They also performed solo arias from La figlia del reggimento and Vespri siciliani (Freni) and Werther and L'africana (Pavarotti). The material is supplemented on today's episode with arias from both singers in contemporaneous live performances at the Arena di Verona. And this entire songfest is topped with the cherry of a live 1965 concert on French television of “O soave fanciulla” in which their joined voices are heard in the first flush of youth. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. We're into another classic OPENING CEREMONY REVIEW as we track back to 2006 and the last time Italy hosted an Olympics, giving us a taste of what we might see again in Milano Cortina 2026. We take a fine-tooth comb to everything this Torino Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony had to offer — from flaming speed skaters and Pavarotti, to Ferrari F1 cars doing doughnuts and an Italian President who somehow managed a dirty mouth and a cold head. There's even some Italian BDSM, a very sparky flame lighting, and the birth of an Opening Ceremony tradition we still can't handle. It's bold, bizarre and oh-so-Torino — and one you won't want to miss!
