We bid adieu to Summer by basking in the autumnal glow of one of our favorite Fall movies: Little Giants (1994). Nearly thirty years after its release, this baby still holds up, so we figured we'd chat with the man responsible for this underdog classic: director/editor extraordinaire, Duwayne Dunham. If you're not familiar, this guy's the stuff of legend. Besides hitch-hiking across the country to charm his way onto the set of Jaws (1975), Duwayne got his start as an assistant editor on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) before getting hired as lead editor of Return of the Jedi (1983) and Blue Velvet (1986). He went on to edit David Lynch's serial drama, Twin Peaks (1990-91), and the 2017 limited series, Twin Peaks: The Return, which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and two nominations. Duwayne's directorial credits include Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993), Little Giants (1994), Halloweentown (1998), as well as the upcoming film The Happy Worker. If Janusz Kaminski's use of Kodachrome in Little Giants doesn't get you excited for Fall, fear not; we call our Mom for an unexpected helping of stew appreciation. After a summer break, we'll be back very soon with a great new full-length episode about another classic movie in the Serrano household. But first, an announcement! Here's a mini bonus episode detailing A.J.'s upcoming short horror film, Night Train. We discuss how A.J. came up with the idea for the film, who the target audience is, and how you can help him realize his goal. Become a supporter of Night Train on Seed & Spark and help get this project 100% funded. Producer extraordinaire and fellow cinephile, Brian Lemieux, returns to the basement to talk about this summer's most anticipated movies. What's coming out this summer? Oh, just a few small pictures called Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission: Impossible — Tom Cruise Jumps Off A Cliff On A Motorcycle Part One. Also, Rory and Reagan offer a tough but fair critique of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in a special segment of “Kidz Critic.” Spoiler alert: There are exactly 61 Spider-People in the movie. Tune in to this episode to get excited for your next favorite summer movie. Haunted Basement is a full-service, boutique video production company. Brooklyn-based filmmaker Michael Lukk Litwak joins us in the basement to talk about his debut feature, Molli and Max in the Future, a sci-fi romantic comedy about a man and woman whose orbits repeatedly collide over the course of 12 years, 4 planets, 3 dimensions, and one space-cult. We cover the joys of When Harry Met Sally, just how much work goes into making a movie set on a different planet, and what Glorp actually tastes like. Plus, Bubba talks about crashing another couple's honeymoon and having a pretty okay cup of coffee at the Double R, and Ashleigh makes #lofiforlife a thing. Oh my science, it's a fun episode. Don't be a Turboschmuck and miss this one. Trust us, it makes perfect nonsense. Haunted Basement is a full-service, boutique video production company. Andrew Wong of Boston-based punk band Miracle Blood joins us in the basement for a conversation about making music in the age of streaming. We talk about stuff like Napster and LimeWire (which, our lawyers would like to make absolutely clear, we've never heard of before), how the algorithms have influenced release strategies, and how to take care of your pipes whilst screaming about your desire to be a Pomeranian. Plus, we urge Mr. Jason Waterfalls not to go, reminisce about a foundational Keane concert (aren't they all?), and as a little bonus A.J. impersonates Louis Armstrong impersonating Creed (can you take me higher to see clouds of white when I'm six feet from the edge of a beautiful world?). Listen to Miracle Blood on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, or Youtube, and follow the band on Instagram. Chris Liberge, President of entertainment consulting agency Enact Insight, joins us in the basement to spread the good word: Hollywood is alive and well! (Never mind what we said last episode - that was so two weeks ago.) Learn, laugh, and live™ as we talk about box office forecasts, our mutual love for the OG Spider-Man (2002), how Taylor Swift serves as an apt metaphor for the Marvel cinematic universe, the increasingly blurred boundary separating movies from television, and how the running time of Martin Scorsese's latest films have waged war against our buttocks. Other noteworthy tidbits: Mom is henceforth known as #Renéefluencer and Haunted Basement: The Podcast is now Haunted Basement: The On Harvard Time Alumni Podcast. Good? Good. The Serrano siblings discuss NY Times film critic A.O. Scott's retirement from film criticism and whether or not Marvel movies and the streaming generation have brought on the death of Hollywood or if the industry is evolving into something new. This is a real high-brow episode, folks. We use words like "the democratization of filmmaking" and "intellectual property," but we also keep things entertaining and light. Plus, we may or may not take a shot at Samuel L. Jackson for starring in a zillion Capital One commercials. The point is, if you have ever streamed a movie or a tv show in the comfort of your own home, this episode is for you. Have a hot take on where the future of Hollywood is heading? Tony-nominated actor Billy Magnussen (Game Night, No Time To Die, Into the Woods, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike) is unfiltered (literally) and unchained (we let him escape the basement, eventually) in a conversation about acting, the future of Holllywood, and hitting audiences in the heart with his new production company, HappyBad Bungalow. Topics include Being vs. Acting, the Hollywood hype machine, waiting for your career to start (Pro-tip: It already has. Embrace it!), and, of course, Top Gun Maverick. Also, the wait is over: Mom returns to the basement with a special message for her fans. Don't miss the episode! Ciao, regazzi! Thinking about skipping this episode? Fugeddaboudit. What are you, a jamoke? This episode is like a nice giambott'. It's got a little bit of everything. The Godfather, The Sopranos, maybe a little White Lotus. And we're talking about it all with Mr. Bada Bing himself: Our Dad. You're gonna be mangia-ing this episode through your ears, youknowwhatImean? We mispronounce Francis Ford Coppola a few-two-tree times, debate whether or not gangster films are disparaging to Italian Americans, and spend a little time discussing the 95th Academy Awards. So leave the gun, take the cannoli and subscribe to the podcast, capish? Mateus Falci joins us in the basement for a funky-fresh convo about his band, Gratis, and their two music video collaborations with Haunted Basement. We also talk about the home movies we made as kids, deciding on film school (three of us), deciding against a film career (one of us), the most bad-ass wedding processional ever, visualizing cyborg tango music and a break-up song in outer space, and why “Let Me Roll It” by Wings contains the most effective pre-chorus in rock and roll history. You can watch Android Eyes and Two In The Morning at hauntedbasement.video. Listen to your new favorite band, Gratis, on Spotify, Apple Music, or Soundcloud, and follow them on Instagram. Professional video magician, Keaton Monger, moseys down to the basement to talk about his love for A Goofy Movie (1995), a classic we all see I 2 I on. Our little Goof troop discusses Goofy's evolution as a character, whether or not there's a Mrs. Goof (or if it even matters), and NASA's recent breakthrough in determining just how many cups of sugar it takes to get to the moon. Later, we call some Gen Alpha critics to get their take on A Goofy Movie's lasting legacy. So grab yourself a cup of Hi Dad soup and watch A Goofy Movie on Disney+, or wherever you get your anthropomorphic dog-toons. Keep the fun going by watching Keaton's "Starlight Theater Presents" on YouTube. Subscribe//Follow on Spotify and Apple Podcasts for future episodes. Blythe Roberson, author of How to Date Men When You Hate Men, joins us in the basement to share how she leads a creative life. Her second book hits shelves this April so clearly Blythe's doing something right (preorder America The Beautiful? here). Take some notes, people. We also get the scoop on A.J.'s trip to Venice, debate how to pronounce the name Charon, and try to make friends with our inner critics. You'll be laughing for hours. Three hours later, you'll still be laughing. Later, we call our mom to ask how she leads a creative life and briefly discuss her feet. You should see them. Subscribe//Follow for future episodes.
