If there ever was a time we all could use a good laugh, it's now — as, all around us, the world seems to be on fire literally, and figuratively. For this special edition of “Bookmarked: Under the Radar Book Club," we're delving into the world of humor on the written page — through the musings of contemporary humor essayists — those sharp and witty observers of everyday life who find the funny in the mundane. "I get embarrassed for being a person with basic tastes who does not interrogate things very deeply. A person who needs to be smacked in the face with the subliminal message, because I absolutely will not suss it out for myself," Samantha Irby writes in her book, "Quietly Hostile." "The embarrassment usually leads to my second guessing both myself and my interpretation of whatever it is we're talking about," she continues. "This then devolves into an even more embarrassing apology. I'm so sorry for not understanding what, quote, 'good acting' is. And that continues until I shrivel into a husk and die, vowing with my dying breath to never again publicly express joy or excitement." These authors use their own lived experiences as a lens to deconstruct the serious in service of the silly. "I don't have any original thoughts that are going to break the world open. I really just have my day-to-day life, my own stories," Blythe Roberson, author of "America the Beautiful?" told Under the Radar. "I really just wrote this book to make people laugh. Like, I didn't write it hoping I would change the hearts and minds of America. So, I hope they just enjoy it, really." GUESTS Samantha Irby, author of five books including her latest book of essays, “Quietly Hostile” Blythe Roberson, author of two books of humorous essays, her latest is “America the Beautiful? One Woman in a Borrowed Prius on the Road Most Traveled” Module

It's been a while since our last episode, but that's because WE'VE BEEN READING! That's right, if you've come across bookstagram, booktube and now booktok, you'd know that reading is IN now. On this episode, we chat with Amanda Chong, lawyer, poet, and co-founder of ReadAble, to discuss some essential feminist reads - except they aren't the usual picks you'd expect. From deliberating our existence to the link between feminism and contemporary Singapore, the selection of books discussed will inspire greater inspection of the self, and how we relate to others. The best day of the week is finally here and your favorite pair is back. Erica and Molly open up this week with a fan email about whether it's a red flag to not have a lot of dating or relationship experience. They discuss how and when to tell someone you're interested in about your dating history (or lack of). They also dive into Blythe Roberson's book "How to Date Men When You Hate Men" and talk about how being single for long periods of time doesn't necessarily mean you're unfulfilled or that you're not ultimately looking for a relationship. They also discuss the saying "a relationship will happen when you least expect it" and why it can make people feel like they are doing something wrong or trying too hard. Lubicie gadać o randkach? My bardzo! Gadamy o: „How to Date Men When You Hate Men”/„Do kina czy na film? Czyli jak randkować z facetami, chociaż tak bardzo nas wkurzają”, Blythe Roberson Polecamy też: „The Unexpected Joy of Being Single” Catherine Gray „Miss Americana” reż. Lana Wilson - dokument o Taylor Swift, „problematycznej idolce” jak określa ją Blythe Roberson Seriale: „Girls”, „Better things”, „Love”, „Easy”, „Sex education”, „Broad City”

This week's Jacking Off with Rebecca and Richie is all about the early 2000's horny man movie Saving Silverman which brings Jack Black and Steve Zahn together! And they're joined by the one and only Blythe Roberson (How To Date Men When You Hate Men) to dissect the symbol heavy film. When Jason Bigg's character starts a relationship with Amanda Peet's rude character, Steve Zahn's character and Jack Black's character kidnap Amanda Peet's rude character so Jason Bigg's character can date Amanda Detmer's character instead. Hijinks ensue. Does this movie hold up? Did it ever? Do the women on this podcast (Rebecca and Blythe) like this movie a little more by the end of this episode? Do they mention the fact that this movie was remade in India under the name "Thotti Gang"? (No! Damn!) Is Richie problematic for liking this movie? Did Jack borrow anything from Neil Diamond? Does Richie have a very good joke for Blythe that he practiced a lot in his apartment? All of these questions and more will be answered this week on Jacking Off with Rebecca and Richie! Come Jack Off with us! Saving Silverman is streaming on Sony Crackle, albeit it's censored.
Blythe Roberson's book, How to Date Men When You Hate Men, explores her perspective on the millennial dating culture, and what all the B.S. (might) mean. For our first episode of 2020, we're catching up on our holiday break, the importance of getting out of the city and turning off ya brain, and how to bounce back post-New Year. For our first book review, we discuss HTDMWYHM, a 2018 non-fiction that focuses primarily on straight, college-educated, white men with privilege, and their relationship with straight, college-educated white women. The book is organized by the chronological steps of a relationship from crushes to making art about your break-up. The book's theme hovers over the antiquated portrayal of a rom-com relationship, and how men and women suffer long after the movie is over. We highlight the book's bright spots, including opting into romance for joy, her theory on "Professionally Insecure Woke Boys", the art of becoming "a full tree", and calling out what's the absolute worst thing to say to a single person. We discuss the low points too, including the author's oblivious attitude and constant-wonder if she's actually ever dated at all, her typical millennial tone and lackluster sarcasm, and an overall questionable authority on relationships and dating. Listen for our Oh My God, Same! moments including the importance of a situation-ship, the panic of a blurry-faced crush, the yearning for romantic stability, and being horrible at giving out signals ie. resting bitch face. What?! It's just our face! Follow us on Instagram @ohmygodsamepodcast, Jaclyn @jaclynmerk, and Erin @erinkcarroll. But for some reason, still wants to date them.

Whether you’re going out to dinner, or sitting at home with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, Valentine’s Day offers unique problems for everyone. This week, Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) interviewed Blythe Roberson (@blythelikehappy) to talk about the modern pitfalls of dating men, when sometimes you can’t stand them. In her new book, How to Date Men When You Hate Men, Blythe Roberson covers the sexism that gets excused in the dating world, and why women often feel the need to be desirable in the eyes of the patriarchy. Afterwards, Ana interviewed Amy Chozick (@amychozick) to talk about the Lorena Bobbitt story, the way we often devalue the stories of women, and how to change her legacy to one of a tabloid feature to one of a survivor.
