MICHAEL B JORDAN & RYAN COOGLER RETEAM FOR VAMPIRE HORROR MOVIE!! Visit https://www.liquidiv.com & use Promo Code: REJECTS to get 20% off your first order! Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan team back up for a chilling Vampire musical epic! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau sink their teeth into one of 2025's most anticipated and chilling cinematic offerings: Sinners! Written & directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed, Black Panther), Sinners reunites the filmmaker with longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, Without Remorse) in a brooding, slow-burn supernatural thriller about faith, guilt, and the secrets we bury to survive. Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye, The Edge of Seventeen, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) brings layered vulnerability to her role opposite Jordan, while Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods, The Harder They Fall, Malcolm X) commands the screen as a fire-and-brimstone preacher with dark motivations. The supporting cast is just as stacked, with Jack O'Connell (Unbroken, Godless) delivering a gripping turn, and Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country, Loki) stealing scenes as a mysterious figure tied to a string of brutal disappearances. But does Coogler's foray into elevated horror strike a nerve?? Join Greg & Coy to find out!! In this new three-part series, Ethan sits down with his screenwriter friends to do a deep dive into the creative process, the power of storytelling, and how identity plays a role in both. In Episode 1, Ethan is joined by screenwriter Dave Callaham, known best for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wonder Woman 1984 and many others. Dave and Ethan discuss, among other things: When Dave knew he was a storyteller The “armor” that Dave wears (how he presents physically vs. who he is) What the process of writing Shang-Chi was like, especially when much of the source material included outdated stereotypes and problematic portrayals. Dave's advice to writers on finding their voice And more Fun fact: You can find the video version of this podcast on the College Essay Guy YouTube channel by clicking here. This is a longer episode format we're experimenting with, so feel free to use the chapters on the video to skip around, and let us know what you think in the YouTube comments. Rather than give you the typical bio, Ethan and Dave kick things off with an improv game where Dave shares what he loves and knows a lot about — an activity that is great for brainstorming ideas for the personal statement! We hope you enjoy. Play-by-Play: 2:02 - Dave plays “I love, I know” – a brainstorming exercise 3:45 - What was Dave like in high school? 7:46 - When did Dave start writing? 11:08 - When did Dave realize he was a storyteller? 12:12 - What did Dave study in college? 13:11 - What was it like writing Shang-Chi? 16:57 - Where does “Dave” show up in Shang-Chi? 28:39 - What is Dave's writing process like when working on a movie? 32:42 - How is writing for animation different from live-action? 35:14 - How does writing change through the movie process? 39:01 - How does Dave decide what to write about next? 51:59 - How important is structure when it comes to screenwriting? 58:30 - The “armor” that Dave wears (how he presents physically vs. who he is) 1:09:33 - What did Dave learn about fight scenes when writing Shang-Chi? 1:16:58 - Dave's advice to writers on finding their voice 1:24:09 - What did Dave write about in his college essay? 1:29:07 - How much time does Dave dedicate to brainstorming in his writing process? 1:32:30 - If Dave could do college again, what might he do differently? 1:39:20 - Why is representation so important on screen? 1:44:06 - What is something Dave wants to share about screenwriting? 1:48:50 - What advice would you give to young people who are considering writing for a living? 1:50:32 - Rapid-fire questions Resources: YouTube video version of this episode I love, I know – a brainstorming exercise College Essay Guy's Personal Statement Resources College Essay Guy's College Application Hub
Best known for co-creating and starring in the HBO series Insecure, Issa has attracted a significant amount of Hollywood spotlight largely by showcasing her own personal experiences and emotions on screen for all to see. Literally starting from scratch in 2011 as the singular brainchild of a homegrown, Kickstarter-funded YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl, she's come quite a long way to become the sitting President of Barbie Land in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. She's done amazing work in films like American Fiction, The Lovebirds and The Photograph, and lent her voice to the iconic Marvel character Spider-Woman in Sony's massively successful animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She's even had the incredible opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Issa has also notably put forth a lot of effort toward making more room for African American stories as the founder and CEO of her own film and TV production company, HOORAE. If a super successful career in entertainment wasn't enough, Issa has also found time to branch out into the retail space as co-founder and creative leader of the haircare brand Sienna Naturals—which we carry at Nordstrom—and more recently she's taken the role of chief storyteller for the jewelry brand Cast, which we also carry. We figured that all of the above was probably enough to earn her a spot on The Nordy Pod. Thanks for tuning in to episode 72. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Tim O'Brien Tim O'Brien, whose latest novel, a contemporary satire, is “America Fantastica,” just out this month in trade paperback, in coversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded at Book Passage on November 6, 2023. The author of ten previous novels, winner of the National Book Award in 1978 for Going After Cacciato, and acclaimed for his linked collection of stories about the Vietnam War, The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien took a 20-year break from writing to help raise his late-in-life children. He returned with a non-fiction book about those years, Dad's Maybe Years, and has now come out with a satirical novel, America Fantastica. This new book, written before and during the Covid pandemic, focuses on the nature of lying, and how America has fallen into a pandemic of lying. A satire set in California, Texas and Minnesota, and focuses on a former journalist who made a career of lying, and on other assorted liars. In the interview, Tim O'Brien discusses this new book, and also discusses his feelings about war, about Vietnam, and about being a writer.
