Home Ground
Navigating the space between the seen world and the unseen world is tough. Thankfully, God hasn't left us to do this blindly. This week we will explore how the scriptures will help us to see how these two realities overlap so that we can live our lives well.
How is it that this bestselling, amazing collection of books, so readily available to us here in the West is the least read book by the majority of Christians? So, why don't we read the Bible? Psalm 119:105 says: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” But how can it be a lamp or a light if we're not reading it!
How does God speak to you? Do you hear God through scripture, through the spirit, through the church or through Jesus?
What is our True North? How do we make sure that we know where to go and who to trust? In 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 the Bible tells us: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." That's where we find our True North.
Welcome to the first Sunday of 2024. Looking to the future can sometimes make us anxious. This Sunday we look at a conversation between God and Moses in Exodus 33 that will give us very practical tools to step into the new year with confidence
As we come to the end of what has been a very busy and difficult year for many of us let us take some time to breathe in and remember that we are, according Acts 17, the dearly loved children of “the God who made the world and everything in it “.
Merry Christmas... Come let us Magnify the Lord!
School might have finished for the year, but we never stop learning! Let's look into the dictionary's definiton of a few words. In church language ADVENT is known as the four weeks before Chistmas. But, another definition is "the arrival of a notable person or thing" The adjective notable is: important and deserving attention. The arrival of a notable person .... This Sunday, let's take some time to prepare for the arrival of Jesus.
Proverbs 13:22 says that, “A good person leaves a legacy for their children's children….” It is not just people that leave legacies, churches do as well. Last Sunday we celebrated 60 wonderful years. This Sunday you will be invited to commit to some very practical steps so that future generations can one day celebrate the legacy left to them. This is our Legacy Project Pledge Sunday!
Happy Birthday to Home Ground, Westville Baptist Church! You're legacy is a Gift!
Pornography is not controversial in the traditional sense. Nevertheless, it has been normalised to such an extent that the thought of it being wrong or sinful or damaging in this day and age is almost bordering on heresy. This is the last week of our series, join us to unpack a horrible blight that is eroding the landscape of our world.
In Genesis 1:27 it says: "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." What does the bible say about what it means to be made in the image of God? How should that affect our understanding of and response to the current controversy around Gender Identity and the Transgender Phenomenon?
In Acts 2: 17 - 18 it says: "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy." What does the bible really teach about women's place in church and in our world?
Last week Richard introduced this series. If you missed this sermon it's highly recommended that you watch it to get some context. So, what is our first Controversial Conversation? Genesis 2:23 The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman”, for she was taken out of man.' Let's talk about the sexual revolution.
Christians WILL find themselves in controversial situations. With rugby on our mind this is an approprite thought: as we all know, you can't run onto a rugby field without being confronted. Christianity is similar. The nature of our faith and life is that we will encounter “push back”. Join us to see why this is a good thing and how Jesus handles these moments.
A call to action... A Call to Generosity!
It is possible to help and hurt at the same time. How can we make sure that we don't hurt when trying to be generous.
Generosity is about re-thinking how we look at people and choosing to see them as God sees them!
"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." Arthur Ashe So often we feel we need to be rich, or famous, or have plenty of time on our hands to make a difference in this world. We dont! In Exodus 4 we read about how Moses doubted his worth and ability to change anything. God asked Moses a very simple question: "What is that in your hand?" and Moses replied, "A shepherds staff." You'll need to read the rest to find out what happened! What is in your hand? The aim of this series is for Jesus to transform our hearts and minds when it comes to giving and receiving, especially in spaces where there is inequity, so that when we give or receive we do so with dignity. Family matters. But in case you didn't know this yet – there is no perfect family! Whether it's your family of origin, your current family or your church family. This series will explore some imperfect areas in family and in the process discover our purpose and our role in whatever family looks like to you.
'For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future.' Jeremiah 29:1 How should we live as Christians in South Africa in 2023? How should we respond to things like load shedding and all the other stuff?? What does Jeremiah have to say to us about living in South Africa?
Hebrew 12: 1.Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. This Sunday is a focus on the life of Joseph “Influence without Power”
