About Susan Inouye:Susan is an executive coach, bestselling author, and co-founder of Sawubona Leadership. With a two-decade career transforming over 600 companies, she's renowned for integrating millennial insights into corporate strategy. Her bestselling book, "Leadership's Perfect Storm," explores how millennials redefine leadership through possibilities, passion, and purpose. Recognized as one of the “Top 10 Inspiring Women Rocking the Global Business World,” Susan's work fosters inclusive cultures globally under Sawubona Leadership, celebrating individual gifts and uniting generations. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Susan Inouye discuss:A gift-centered leadership approach in organizationsBridging the gap between millennials and older generations in corporate environmentsSomatic practices for leadershipThe power of community in leadership The ‘Sawubona' leadership approach Key Takeaways:When leaders rely too heavily on their natural gifts (e.g., planning, high standards), those strengths can become weaknesses, such as micromanagement or resistance to adaptability. Learning to integrate the "opposite" trait fosters balance.Intellectual insights alone do not create lasting change; leaders must embody new behaviors through physical experiences, such as slowing down through Tai Chi or building confidence through martial arts.Companies that implemented the "Sawubona" approach saw significant financial and cultural improvements, with some increasing profitability by 50% in just six months.Sustainable change in leadership starts with a few committed individuals who embody transformation, creating a ripple effect that reshapes organizational culture. "Most people who have a gift, they overuse the gift until it becomes a weakness or curse.” — Susan Inouye Connect with Susan Inouye: Website: https://susaninouye.com/leadovationpodcast/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7G6sjAyzq3UDnumH7L8ZcwLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/susan-inouye-083384b/X (Twitter): https://x.com/InouyeSusanFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/susaninouye2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susan_inouye/Book: Leadership's Perfect Storm: https://www.amazon.com/Leaderships-Perfect-Storm-Millennials-Possibilities/dp/194527137X See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Hanz Jimuel AlvarezAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. By 2025, millennials are projected to become the largest segment of the global workforce, comprising over 75% of employees, according to Pew Research Center. This generational shift presents both opportunities and challenges for organizations seeking to inspire effective leadership in a rapidly evolving and divided world. In this episode, Fred sits down with Susan Inouye, a leadership expert and advocate for Sawubona Leadership. Derived from the Zulu greeting meaning "I see you," Sawubona Leadership emphasizes authentic connection, empathy, and empowerment—principles that resonate deeply with millennials seeking purpose-driven careers and inclusive workplaces. Key questions explored during this engaging discussion include: How can Sawubona Leadership transform relationships between leaders and their teams? Why are millennials uniquely positioned to bring people together in today's divided world? What practical steps can executives and senior managers take to embrace this leadership philosophy? Susan shares her mission to spread the principles of Sawubona to leaders at all levels, providing actionable insights to help organizations cultivate leaders who can drive collaboration, innovation, and unity. Leaders today face the significant challenge of connecting with their employees and effectively recognizing and leveraging their unique talents. This often results in disengagement and underperformance. As the millennial generation, which highly values authenticity and compassion, becomes the dominant force in the global workforce, this issue becomes even more pressing. Traditional leadership styles frequently fall short, leaving employees feeling unrecognized and disengaged. The solution lies in adopting a more compassionate, gift-centered approach to leadership. By embracing and acknowledging the unique strengths of each individual, leaders can foster a more connected, motivated, and effective team. Susan Inouye's proven track record as an executive coach in transformational change has positively impacted over 600 businesses in 40 industries. A recognized expert with millennials, she was instrumental in taking a revolutionary method called Sawubona Leadership (Zulu for “I see you”) and is being used globally because of its capacity to unite all generations through their gifts, passions and purpose. She is the bestselling author of Leadership's Perfect Storm: What Millennials Are Teaching Us about Possibilities, Passion and Purpose. In this episode, Susan shares the importance of recognizing and leveraging individual gifts within an organization to foster a more engaged and productive workforce. She emphasizes the need for leaders to practice self-awareness and vulnerability, particularly in the context of working with millennials and Gen Z, who value authentic and compassionate leadership. She talks about the concept of "gift-centered praise," which focuses on acknowledging the underlying strengths behind employees' actions to encourage broader application of their talents. A: Millennials want compassionate leaders who see and accept them for who they are. And while men can employ it, women are more attuned to compassion. Key Takeaways: "It's not about the practices in their life, it's the practices integrated in their life that actually gets them to do it and transform in the way they do." - Susan Inouye "My execs have found, when you see and accept someone for who they are, they see and accept you for who you are. And a different conversation unfolds. It's not one of us lecturing to each other, but one of us listening and learning from each other." - Susan Inouye "In its simplicity, the three things of Sawubona, if you connect and receive, if you see people's gifts, if you create a culture where people feel a part of something greater than themselves, so many things can happen." - Susan Inouye Ways to Connect with Susan Inouye: Website: http://susaninouye.com/ Book: Leadership's Perfect Storm: What Millennials Are Teaching Us about Possibilities, Passion and Purpose Ways to Connect with Sarah E. Today is the 1st Sunday in the season of Lent. Here at Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Berkley, MI the scripture readings for this season are from the book of Lamentations. Today's scripture lesson is Lamentations 1:11-22 11 All her people are groaning, seeking bread. They give up their most precious things for food to survive. “Lord, look and take notice: I am most certainly despised.” 12 Is this nothing to all you who pass by? Look around: Is there any suffering like the suffering inflicted on me, the grief that the Lord caused on the day of his fierce anger? 13 From above he sent fire into my bones; he trampled them. He spread a net for my feet; he forced me backward. He left me devastated, constantly sick. 14 My steps are being watched; by his hand they are tripped up. His yoke is on my neck; he makes my strength fail. My Lord has handed me over to people I can't resist. 15 My Lord has despised my mighty warriors. He called a feast for me—in order to crush my young men! My Lord has stomped on the winepress of the young woman Daughter Judah. 16 Because of all these things I'm crying. My eyes, my own eyes pour water because a comforter who might encourage me is nowhere near. My children are destroyed because the enemy was so strong. 17 Zion spreads out her hands; she has no comforter. The Lord commanded Jacob's enemies to surround him. Jerusalem is just a piece of garbage to them. 18 The Lord is right, because I disobeyed his word. Listen, all you people; look at my suffering. My young women and young men have gone away as prisoners. 19 I called to my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders have perished in the city; they were looking for food to survive. 20 Pay attention, Lord, for I am in trouble. My stomach is churning; my heart is pounding inside me because I am so bitter. In the streets the sword kills; in the house it is like death. 21 People heard that I was groaning, that I had no comforter. All my enemies heard about my distress; they were thrilled that you had done this. Bring the day you have announced so they become like me! 22 Let all their evil come before you. Then injure them like you've injured me because of all my wrong acts; my groans are many, my heart is sick.

It's incredible how just three simple words, "I see you," can profoundly impact our business and personal relationships. As leaders-whether starting a company, leading a division or playing a key member role-it's crucial to understand the value of these words. Using them effectively can create deeper connections with those around us: customers, colleagues and strategic partners and these deeper connections are crucial in this environment. Inspiration for the story today came from a personal experience when I was the first to arrive on a video call (one of several in a row). As I asked if anyone could see me, another guest responded and included those three magic words, "Yes, Gary. I see you." It left a lasting impression and showed me the power of acknowledging someone's presence much more profoundly than, ‘yes, I'll be right there'. Or, ‘running just a minute late, hang on please'. Right! But "I see you" is more than just a physical acknowledgment. It's about recognizing someone's worth and building stronger relationships. In South Africa's Northern Natal region, the tribes greet each other with "Sawubona," which means "I see you." It's about acknowledging someone's value beyond their physical being. It's about more than words of politeness, Sawubona carries the importance of recognizing the worth and dignity of each person. Wow. So I began to wonder: is there a way to bring the value and weight of this saying into the digital domain? Can the depth of this greeting be useful in a business setting? Can this greeting help us with our humanness as distinct from our AI? To answer these questions I created four pillars to help you harness the power of "I see you" in your business and personal life (which are inextricably connected), and they are;I. Seeing and Leading Yourself (how you show up in business online and in person), II. Leading others, three behaviors are key to a leader who is ‘seen' and ‘sees others', III. Expanding your organizational impact by educating and influencing others, IV. Expanding your career by seeing others and creating your portable tribe. By recognizing someone's worth and connecting with them on a deeper level-even in business settings-you can turbocharge your communication and transform your relationships in ways you might never have dared imagine, and there create unusually high business impact. In a day and time when we are all both excited and yet anxious about integrating the many roles of AI into helping us be our best human beings, we hold the absolute power in our unique human form of recognizing the value in each other, one person at a time. We can truly see what no machine can see. Let's make those around us feel more fully seen with the power of "I see you," and join me on this journey to see and be seen! Sawubona is Zulu it means "I see you, you are important to me and I value you”. It is so amusing to me the influence words make when read out loud. Welcome to Season 2 of the Universal Afrikans Healing Circle podcast. This episode we continue reading The Spirit of Intimacy, Ancient African Teachings in the Ways of Relationships by Sobonfu Somé, reading chapters 2 & 3. In discussing a Song of Spirit and The Embrace of Community we are given many gems to implement in our lives that will aid us in healing ourselves, tradition and our communities. Even using our mother tongues (mine is Tswana/Sesotho) helps the healing process. The significance between Sawubona and just saying hello. I have elders that, that's the only way I greet them and when I say it, it brings me a deeper sense of connection, connection to my elders, connection to my ancestors, connection to spirit, and connection to community. I would love to read in the comments ways you'll work towards healing yourselves and in turn reviving your communities or building community and reconnecting with spirit. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/uahc/message
Every year Youth Mentoring takes 50 teenage girls up the mountain to Big Bear for the Girls Retreat! It's a powerful journey of separation, challenges, and a sisterhood celebration. I've done about 8 retreats and am heartbroken that we're missing out this year. As with so many things Covid-19 has put this year's retreat on hold. Join us for a conversation with Juliana Wells, and some of our mentors and mentees, as we dig in on why and how the annual initiation creates magic and how you can help our girls this year with or with out the mountain.
It's an addiction. It's something that not only has changed lives but saved lives. “The sweetest thing I've ever known. Just like a kiss on a collar bone” - Lauryn Hill. Music has been the biggest part of my heart, brain, and life for as long as I can remember. I started The Idea Fountain: Life Changing Conversations but to date we have never really talked about music. I think that's because a lot of music interviews can be promotional. When it comes to artists who have changed my life… I mean artists not songs…. There's 2Pac. He's not available. Kathleen Hanna and the Riot Grrrl movement really shaped who I am today (still working on that). There IS one person that worked created SO much music, that somehow got woven into the identity, memories, and culture of who I am that my life is forever changed - it's Salaam Remi. We're talking Fugees, Nas, and Amy Winehouse just to name a few. In true “Sawubona” fashion he sees artists, who are artists, in every sense of the word. He grew up loving the radio. And he's one of the best guys in music. We started talking music and the floodgates opened - this is the longest Idea Fountain episode to date but there are also so many gems. Enjoy!
