Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations
**This episode is part of a mini-series produced for the Gascoyne Catchment’s Group, who have kindly allowed me to share it with you. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.** n this episode, we speak to Mick and Winsome Hearman, whose family called Middayla Station home for 120 years. For four generations, the Hearmans poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the land, building a thriving sheep station and enduring the highs and lows of life in the bush. They’ve seen it all—from facing the devastation caused by fires, cyclones, and droughts, to the introduction of aerial mustering and motorbikes. In fact - Mick played a key role in the design off the first off-road motorbike developed for mustering in Australia. In this episode, Mick recalls the golden age of pastoralism, a time when the wool industry flourished and the outback was alive with opportunity. But he also shares the heartbreak of the wool market crash that changed everything. And if that’s not enough, we’ve got a love story woven into this incredible journey—a testament to resilience, partnership, and the unbreakable bond between two people who’ve weathered it all. It was an absolute privilege to sit down with Mick and Winesome, who at the time of this recording, were both 89 years young. So, let’s dive into the lives and legacy of the Hearmans.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wil Winsome is a magician-for-hire, whose newest case may involved excising a possessing spirit from a beloved and fragile grandmother. Genre: Fairy Tale, Horror Excerpt: What I got from my mother was her hands. I am the only one among my brothers and sisters who can do real magic. It took study and struggle, true. I'm only half-fairy after all. I am also the only one because my brothers and sisters chose other paths. Paths less littered with singed parchment, bearing symbols written in the faded sepia of dried blood. Paths less meandering into the mouths of bat-filled caverns. Paths less soaked in potions made of dogs' breath and widows' tears. What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. This week's story is connected to the Year One story entitled “The Dolls,” in which the character of Wil Winsome first appears, as a child, with four siblings, and an evil stepmother. Colossians 4:5-6
Author Winsome Bingham was raised in a community that gathered together to vote. But as a kid, she didn't realize how important this practice was to her life. Illustrator E.B. Lewis had a different childhood experience with elections. His parents voted but would do so almost in secret. As a result, Lewis didn't become a voter until his late 20s. In their children's book, The Walk (A Stroll to the Poll), published in 2023, Bingham and Lewis hope to give kids insight into this democratic process. In the book, a child and her grandmother pick up friends and neighbors on their way to the polls, forming a civically-minded procession. In today's episode, NPR's Scott Simon introduces a conversation between the author and illustrator about how children learn by watching adults act and how voting can be a collective–rather than individual–experience. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

“What is the greatest threat to the church of Jesus Christ today?” Authors Rick Langer and Tim Muehlhoff answer, “quarreling.” Their book, Winsome Conviction, helps Christians disagree well. In today's polarized context, Christians often have committed, biblical rationales for very different positions. How do we discern between core biblical convictions and secondary issues? How do we cultivate better understanding and compassion for those we disagree with? Join Jim and Greg as they get you ready for tonight's presidential debate, discuss how the 2025 Virginia governor's race is already shaping up, and sigh as activists on the left are getting frustrated that pop star Taylor Swift has not yet endorsed Kamala Harris.First, they highlight Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears officially kicking off her run for governor next year. It's a tough state, sorry, commonwealth, for the GOP to win in and a rough primary could make it even tougher. Jim urges Virginia Republicans to avoid an intraparty bloodbath if at all possible. Sears is very clearly running as a continuation of the "common sense conservatism" of popular GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is term limited.Next, they dig into what to expect in tonight's first (and possibly only) presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. They consider how Harris will deal with questions about her supposedly changing positions on a wide variety of issues - changes that tack away from her far left views from the 2020 campaign. They also consider which tactics might be employed by both candidates to throw the other one off message and what to expect from the ABC News moderators this evening. Then, they try to shake it off over lefties developing bad blood with Taylor Swift over her failure to publicly endorse Kamala Harris thus far in the campaign. Will Swift fall in line by the end of this cruel summer or will she be an anti-hero for the Democrats all the way to Election Day? Either way, Jim says this is taking the connection between celebrities and politics to a new, unhealthy level, where failure to get politically involved is now demonized. Finally, they offer a short tribute to acting legend James Earl Jones, who died on Monday. Please visit our great sponsors:Lumenhttps://lumen.me/3MLHead to lumen.me/3ML for 15% off your Lumen.

June 15, 2009. Toronto, Ontario. 32-year old Turkish immigrant Hatice Corbacioglu leaves on a road trip to New York in order to meet her 28-year old Turkish boyfriend, Riza Cosa, with whom she has been carrying on a long-distance relationship for six months. Hatice never returns and breaks off all contact with her family, but Riza claims that she left on a flight to Turkey. However, it eventually comes out that Riza is already married and his 45-year old wife, Winsome Angela Perez, has also gone missing. In May 2010, Winsome's murdered body is discovered behind Riza's former workplace and within days, it is announced that Riza has taken his own life in Turkey and no trace of Hatice can be found. This week, Ralph discusses the trend of "accentuating the positive" when preaching the Gospel, something which often ends up distorting the Gospel. The Gospel is immensely positive - it offers us salvation! - but it also inspires awe when we contemplate the consequences for those who reject it. As St. Paul says in the Epistle to the Romans: we must "consider both the kindness and the severity of God" if we wish to preach the "full Gospel". This episode features a conversation with three of the principal developers of the recently released Portrait of a Thriving Youth. Priscilla Little, Winsome Waite, and Shereen El Mallah were part of a design team formed by Youth-Nex: The University of Virginia Center for Effective Youth Development and the producer of the Lessons in Adolescence podcast, to craft a document akin to the growing number of Portraits of a Graduate being used in school systems around the country. The Portrait of a Thriving Youth extends this model beyond just the educational realm to encompass a range of assets and capacities that adults in multiple venues can help young people develop. In part one of their conversation, Priscilla, Winsome, Shereen, and Jason talk about the reasons and motivations behind developing the Portrait of a Thriving Youth and it's connection with other Portrait efforts in school systems and communities throughout the country, the process of developing the portrait through a cross-disciplinary design team and the ways the design team worked to capture youth input and feedback, and how the design team approached defining foundational terms like Youth and Thriving as well as why the team focused on adolescence. In part two, they talk about the influences of relationships, environments, and systems on all the factors of development during this time period. They then dive into the six specific domains within the Portrait, the components of each of those domains, the features that cut across different domains, and the tools and resources attached to the Portrait that help educators, youth workers, and other adults create the environments to help youth thrive. They also discuss the potential benefit of the Portrait for the education and youth spaces over time.Additional Readings and ResourcesPortrait of a Thriving YouthPortrait Resource for EducatorsPortrait Self-AssessmentYouth-Nex: The University of Virginia Center for Effective Youth DevelopmentYouth Advisory CouncilScience of Learning & Development AlliancePlanning Tool for Developing a System for Thriving and Learning“The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity for All Youth,” National Academies for Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Consensus Study Report, 2019.The Portrait Model: Building Coherence in School and Systems Redesign, Getting Smart
