On the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we explore the deep connection between education and voting rights—two pillars of democracy that have long been intertwined. For decades, education determined one's access to the polls, as literacy tests and other barriers were used to disenfranchise Black voters. Today, attacks on curriculum, book bans, and misinformation continue to shape political participation, particularly for young and marginalized communities. And education itself is on the ballot, with school board races; policies on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; and funding for public schools directly impacting what future generations learn about history, democracy, and their civil rights. At the federal level, the effort to dismantle the Department of Education and roll back protections for marginalized students is underway, and will deepen disparities and weaken access to quality and equitable education. In this episode, we will unpack the legacy of Selma, the ongoing threats to both voting and education, and how we can honor those who marched by taking action today.

Church to demand the right to vote. They walked six blocks to Broad Street and across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where they were met by more than 50 state troopers and a few dozen possemen on horseback. When the demonstrators refused to turn back, they were brutally beaten. At least 17 were hospitalized,FYI: Activist Jimmie Lee Jackson murder on February 26th 1965 sparked the March across the Edmund Pettis Bridge.There were THREE Marches across The Bridge BECAUSE the First on March on March 7, 1965, resulted in Violence against the Marchers; The Second March on Tuesday, March 9, 1965. Martin Luther King led the March & prayed at the beginning of the Bridge. The last March was held March 17 with permits & saftey, The Marchers crossed the Bridge.​Senator Henry “Hank” Sanders is the second of 13 children born to Ola Mae and Sam Sanders of Baldwin County, Alabama. He challenged the twin obstacles of poverty and racism to: graduate from Douglasville High School, Talladega College, and Harvard Law School; establish a law practice; and serve as the first African American State Senator from the Alabama Black Belt. He is married to Faya Ora Rose Touré, formerly Rose M. Sanders, and they have three children by birth, four by foster relationship, and many by heart.In 1971, Sanders began what became Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders, Pettaway and Campbell, LLC. At one time, it was the largest Black law firm in Alabama and one of the ten largest in the country. Welcome to Spiritually Fit Yoga!  There's wisdom in growing older and I wanted to share a few lessons I've learned after just turning 29, for the second time, plus 2 years! LOL. If you've struggled with old stories, or past hurts keep you from living a joyful, fulfilled life, you may get a lot out of this episode. If I have been able to rewire my brain, shift my mindset, and leading from a place of self-love instead of fear, then you can too! The holidays can be challenging, whether it's from old memories, being with people or circumstances, or a reaction to any meaning that's been placed on specific events. My hope is that by sharing my journey through suffering to healing may inspire you to do the same. Maybe I might even expedite your release from old stories, so your journey may be shorter, faster, easier, by learning from the suggestions offered in this episode.
