Part 2 of this Bible Study, drawn from the Book of Haggai Chapter 2, presents a powerful call to renewed faithfulness and obedience, centered on the rebuilding of God's temple as a symbol of spiritual renewal. It emphasizes that true worship and service are not measured by outward grandeur but by inward holiness, as the people's efforts were tainted by unrepentant hearts and selfish priorities. Through a series of prophetic messages, the preacher underscores that God's presence and blessing are contingent upon genuine repentance and faithful action, promising that the glory of the latter temple would surpass the former through the coming Messiah. The passage also affirms God's sovereign plan, sealing His promise through Zerubbabel as a chosen vessel in the Davidic line, and applies this to believers today by reminding them of their divine election and the urgency of living in alignment with God's will. Ultimately, the message calls for self-examination, a rejection of complacency, and a confident trust in God's faithfulness to fulfill His redemptive purposes.
Go build the Temple!
Prosperity and purity

EC [Morning By Morning] Haggai (2) Daniel So / Haggai chapter 2 (2025-01-24) by One Hope Church
In this episode, Pastor Nate Schrimp continues the teaching series "Small Books, Big Message" with a sermon out of Haggai chapter 2. In this chapter, Haggai encourages the people to keep building the temple and to trust God to fulfill His promises to them. He also addresses the issue of sin that is permeating everything they do and how they need God to take that sin in order to build the temple in with clean hands.

On Down to Earth But Heavenly Minded Podcast. Notes On The Minor Prophets, by H A Ironside Loizeaux Brothers, Inc., Bible Truth Depot 19 West 21st Street, New York 10, N. Y. Preface It was with no definite purpose of writing a series of Notes on the Minor Prophets as a whole, that I first began to take up various books of the twelve, in monthly installments in Help and Food for the Household op Faith. But after penning some notes on Habakkuk, Jonah, and Obadiah, I found my own soul helped, and an interest developed in the further study of these much-neglected portions of Scriptures, and so took up Hosea and the books following. I have sought to press their practical application as giving important teaching for a remnant people in a day of decline, while not neglecting their dispensational bearing. This, I am persuaded, is what is greatly needed at the present moment. 1. Inherited Flaws A. ‘Son of Shealtiel' B. You are someone's son/daughter 2. Circumstantial Flaws A. Zerubbabel B. You are influenced by society, this world and people around you 3. Created Flaws A. “I will take you” B. You are responsible for your decisions “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” (2 Corinthians 4:7–10 NIV11) Please add your comments on this week's topic. 1. How does coming into my blessings (relationship with me) work? vv 10-13 A. Israel needed reminding that they did not make themselves holy B. What has been your experience of my holiness? vv14-19a A. You did not respect it. B. I brought/allowed you trouble, but you ignored it to pursue your own priorities C.What influences/tempts us to forget to respect God's holiness? 3. What does your future look like now you have repented? vv19b A. Currently no better than before! B. But the future is promised to be better. C. What does trusting God look like, here in Watford, practically, today? Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. 1. The Call to Reflect - Haggai 2:2 - We notice all parts of the community are addressed. Secular leadership, spiritual leadership and the ‘remnant of the people'. - No group will achieve much for God unless all parts are determined to please God and bring him honour. - Are we all aligned in this way? - Haggai 2:3 “‘Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? - Now 520, destruction 586 - 66 years previously - Three questions, all driving at the heart of their discouragement. - ‘Who of you'; ‘How does it'; ‘Does it not'? - Not all were old enough to remember, but some were, and may have been the most influential. If, when comparing the old temple with the smaller new one they were dejected, it is understandable. - Perhaps he was one of those who was old enough to remember. It would lend weight to his question. Jewish tradition makes him old (1 Rabbi Eli Cashdan, The Twelve Prophets (Soncino Press, 1948), p. 254.). - Had the work begun to lose momentum? - We can be similarly effected. The new ‘glory' of the church may not look as ‘glorious' to the older members. - But it does not have to. It needs to glorify God, not transport us back to a former time of glory now gone, precious, but part of the past. - How hopeful (faithful) are you about the future of the church? How much doubt and discouragement are you sensing, or how much excitement and anticipation? Can you be honest about any doubts and fears you are experiencing? God can handle whatever you are feeling. 2. The Call to Courage - Haggai 2:4 “But now be strong, - ‘but now' - implies the ability to make a decision, as well as the need to do so. - ‘but' is a statement of faith. It does not matter what the past was like, how you feel about it, what you think it all signifies - what matters is what decision you make here and now as confronted with the word from God. - ‘be strong' - Joshua 1:5-9. A time of a new beginning - Used 3 times - all parts of the community need to make the same decision. Implies that if one or two segments get on board, the other or others will derail the situation. - Implies strength is a decision - Implies they knew what it would look like to be ‘strong' in their context. I.e. the actions that would follow from the decision to ‘be strong'. - If God were to say to us ‘be strong', would we know what that meant? - ‘work. For I am with you' - ties together tightly the activity and the support. - Haggai 2:5 ‘This is what I covenanted with you...Do not fear.'” - ‘Spirit remains' - as in ‘abides', or as in ‘you might have thought I had abandoned you, but I am still with you despite your rebellion and apparent realities'? - ‘do not fear' - fear of the king reversing his decisions? Fear of standing out by finishing the temple? - They were presumably a minority in the land. - Fear of compromising personal comfort if prioritise building temple? - Fear of God not reversing the economic curses if they take him at his word? - God believes in us when we do not believe in ourselves. - Point of Grace [song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA3jPIHnsIc ) - How much more we can trust God's presence with us as we work for him, Jn 14:23 3. The Call to Trust - Haggai 2:7 I will shake all nations - ‘what is desired' - is this Messianic? - ‘fill this house' - with the treasures of the Gentiles. Is this an indication of the inclusion of the Gentiles, or of the triumph of Israel over the Gentiles? - God is saying he will rearrange the old order of things. Ultimately that come when Jesus entered the temple, cleansed it and brought the living water and powerful truth that would change the world. - Haggai 2:9 ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,'" - ‘glory' here and v7 sandwich the mention that God owns the silver and gold. - ‘greater' - in God's definition of greater. - If we keep working for God the future will be better than the present. - ‘grant peace' - Could it be the fear of reprisals has frightened the people? Maybe they are also afraid that their delays in rebuilding the temple have angered God. They know how God dealt with the desert rebellions and the idolatry of their past. Are they worried he will not forgive? The promise of peace could be a relational peace more than a political or social one. Conclusion - Reflect; Courage; Trust - God always has a vision - It becoming reality does not depend on our talent level, but on our willingness to act courageously in full trust of God Questions: 1. Could you take some time to reflect on how the work for God is going where you are? 2. Are there any areas where fear is holding you or your group back from building something that would glorify God? 3. Do you truly believe that the future will be more glorious than the past?

1. It is a blessing to have people point us back to God 1. Do we have the right priority? v2-4 - Roof - Psalm 27:4 2. Have we been paying attention to the way God is trying to get our attention? vv5-6, 9-11 - Brexit; COVID; War; Energy crisis; inflation - Personal life: health; kids; ageing parents; jobs; 3. Do it for God, v8 - His Pleasure & Honour - My spiritual retreat - Question: Who do you have in your life that points you back to God? 2. It is a joy to build for God's pleasure and honour, v7-8, 12-14 1. Mountains - costly 2. All involved: - Are you willing to work for the LORD in this congregation? - Do you know what that means? - One of our aspirations: ‘Toiling to build the church well' 3. God's strength - ‘the LORD stirred' - Psalm 27:4. Spiritual disciplines open us up to the work of the Spirit in our lives. - What spiritual disciplines are you aware of? - Solitude; silence; celebration; fellowship; slow Scripture reading; praying through Scripture; fasting; - The spiritual disciplines are wisdom, not righteousness. But they are wise practices that train and transform our hearts. James Bryan Smith, “Good and beautiful God” - Question: What spiritual disciplines are you employing to enable God to give you the strength to labour for Him? Conclusion - “Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:19–22 NIV11) Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Haggai Chapter 2
Haggai Chapter 1
Tiffany and George discuss the final chapter of this short book. What is your motivation for ministry? Do you get discouraged if it doesn't go the way you envision it? If yes, this chapter is for you.
Haggai spoke some 66 years after the temple was destroyed, but very likely there were some old people who had seen Solomon's temple in its lavish glory. God asks them to compare its glory now and see if it measures up. God also tells them to be strong, do not be discouraged, and carry on the work. God further describes the idea of clean and unclean with regards to the hearts of the people. With a change of heart, comes a restoration of blessings. Finally, a promise to Zerubbabel brings hope of the Messiah.
The hard financial times the Jews were experiencing meant God was trying to get their attention, as He warned He would (Deut. 28:15-41). God told them they would sow much and reap little (28:38) and it was happening. Their fruitful land wouldn't prosper if they refused to listen and obey. Here in Haggai they got discouraged and then found other things to do, so God tells them to “consider” their ways. They ate, but didn't have enough to eat, something else God warned about (Lev. 26:14,26; Hos. 4:10; Mic. 6:13,14). They ignored Leviticus 25:4 for 490 years, so God told them the Land would need to rest for 70 years. They were given an all expenses paid trip to bondage in Babylon. That means all the nutrients farming takes out of land were restored, and their land should have been producing again. When it didn't, they should have known they were being judged. Just as the coats they were putting on weren't warming them, the money they were making wasn't profiting them. God warned them they'd spend their strength at work in vain (Lev. 26:14,20). So when God told them to consider their ways they should take Him seriously. It was time to go back to work on the temple.
Who's temple are you building? Yours or God's? We are invited in this chapter to consider our ways.
In Israel's Post-exile history, the Books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther tell us the story of a people returning to the land. Post-exile prophets: Haggai, Zecharaiah, and Malachi were there to speak to them from the Lord. Through the prophet Haggai, the Lord noted that these men lived in great houses while His house was still in ruins. Haggai told the men to seriously think about the way they lived. They seemed to only care about pleasure and they had become lazy. Their future would be one of ruin if they did not mend their ways.
Pastor Lowell Nelson teaches on the book of Haggai on 2/9/2022 for our Wednesday Bible Study. Haggai Chapter 1 https://ebible.com/nkjv/haggai/1 1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 "Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: 'This people says, "The time has not come, the time that the LORD's house should be built." ' " 3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 "Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?" 5 Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways! 6 "You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes." 7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways! 8 "Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified," says the LORD. 9 "You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says the LORD of hosts. "Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. 10 "Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 "For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands." 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD. 13 Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's message to the people, saying, "I am with you, says the LORD." 14 So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius. This is episode 78. And today's episode is sponsored by “The Next 7 Days - A Weekly Prayer Journal” available at JanLBurt.com - that's Jan L Burt dot com I'd like to look at a few verses from the OT, a small book entitled Haggai and also one verse from the NT. Ephesians 3:20 - I'd like to read it from the AMP first and then maybe from another translation as well. Eph 3:20 (AMP) - Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, J.B. Phillips says it this way - Now to him who by his power within us is able to do far more than we ever dare to ask or imagine—to him be glory in the Church through Jesus Christ for ever and ever, amen! (Verses 20 and 21 of Ephesians chapter 3 from the Phillips translation) Isn't it freeing to know it is His power within us that gets done what He wants gotten done? And how profound that what He often wants to get done is described as far more than we ever dare to ask or imagine. I can ask a lot. I can imagine a lot. But that word dare, in the Phillips… what do I DARE to ask for? What do I dare to imagine? What's the biggest of the big stuff I can desire from the hand of the Lord? Like, so big it takes some daring to even ask for it! To even imagine it! That is not what He wants to do. Nope. Those are the small potatoes. He is able, and we know from our NT look into the life of Jesus here on the earth, that willing isn't an issue with the Lord (Didn't He say If I can? If I am willing?) Oh He is often far more willing than we are! He is able and He is willing to do far more than those daring imaginings and daring asks! He is so well able to carry out His purpose. You never have to really worry whether or not He has a purpose for your life. Or if His purpose will happen. Look, if you want to hear from the Lord, if you have a heart to do His will, if you have a genuine desire to know what it is He wants you to be doing in this life, then He will make sure you know His will. In big things, in little things. Start where you are and be faithful to Him. Love your family well - like, ask God how you can love them well today. Then do it again tomorrow. Don't be a time waster in your work. Work well, work wisely. These are the things that honor the Lord. Start there and expect Him to lead you and guide you and speak to you about His purpose for you and His purpose for the world right now. He is able to carry out His purpose. And He is also able to make sure that you know what He wants you to be doing. He created you and He knows how best to communicate with you and let you know what He would like for you to know on any given day of your life. Okay - now, that little piece of wording there from the AMP that says “superabundantly”. Whoa. Now that is a word! Super Abundantly. More than enough. Excessive abundance. Redundancy. Plethora. Surplus. Overmuchness. A very large amount of something, more than is usual or needed. Did you know this is how God wants to work in our lives? We cannot fully grasp it, it is too much muchness to actually wrap our little finite minds around. But it's true! And my challenge to you today, and to me also, is to fully and totally believe, like just make the decision to believe, to flat absolutely believe this is true for you. Overmuchness. I love that word. May be one of my new favorite words. Overmuchness. Lord, thank You for the overmuchness You are going to pour out into our lives in every area as You see fit. We are grateful for it, we will be healthier because of it, and we will see Your hand at work in us and then through us to bless others in all sorts of ways. What a promise! Okay, let's take a look at the OT verses I mentioned earlier, from the book of Haggai. Not a long book, just two chapters, right toward the end of the OT. Chapter two, verses 4 through 7. From the AMP - 4 But now be courageous, Zerubbabel,' declares the Lord, ‘be courageous also, Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and be courageous, all you people of the land,' declares the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,' declares the Lord of hosts. 5 ‘As for the promise which I made with you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit stands [firm and immovable] and continues with you; do not fear!' 6 For thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the desirable and precious things of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory and splendor,' says the Lord of hosts. Be courageous and do the work, for I am with you. Is there any part of your life that those words fit right now? Like, we want to be wearing what fits us in each season of life, ya know? So if you have some work you know God has for you to be doing - could be simple, like a text message you need to send to encourage someone or tell someone something about the Lord - or it could be more than that. Invite someone to church with you or to your Bible study. Gift someone a Bible. Pray out loud on an Instagram live. If you have something you know He wants you to do, can you step up to the plate and be courageous and do it, knowing He is with you. Do the work, for the Lord is with you. What's scary when He is with us? Well, actually things settle down and get way way less intimidating when we know that we know that we know God is with us. His Spirit stands, firm and immovable, and continues with you. That is awesome. The Holy Spirit, who dwells in you if you know Christ as Savior, He is standing firm and immovable. You ain't gonna move Him and nothing and nobody else is, either. It won't happen because it cannot happen. He continues with you. It's a covenant. He won't leave you, He won't forsake you. He continues with you. So good!! And when the shaking starts (it seems as if it has started, you know? This shaking… it is happening and has been happening since I feel 2020 and I don't think we are quite done just yet with this shaking). So when we are seeing that shaking happening, and it's hard to deny this is a season of God shaking the nations of the world, and then He says He will (oooh He says He will, and what does it mean when God Almighty says He will do something? Will means WILL!) He will fill His house with glory and splendor. That's so good. We want to see God glorified all the time. And we should want to see His splendor. If we love Him, we really should get excited about things like this. Okay, I will post these verses in the show notes. And also, real quick, I want to let you know my book The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises devotional is going to be at a lower price for a couple of weeks on Amazon. So maybe if you'd like to get a new devotional or as an early Christmas gift idea, you can check that out. Have a fabulous rest of your day and know that God is desiring and planning and wanting to do the superabundant in your life. Ask Him for big big things and then just know His idea of big is way bigger than your biggest big could ever possibly be. I'm believing God for that overmuchness to be a huge part of your life in the very near future.
