My Fellow Laymen

Hey there my fellow laymen! It’s the final episode of the year, and so I’m glad to host this episode with David, the President and Managing Director of World Radio Paris, and discuss the subject which has dominated our lives over this past year, the Rona. I break down the concept of a pandemic and give historical background of the Spanish Flu, I explain the concept of a virus, from what it actually is, to how it functions, how it came to exist, and how it’s changed over the past century. I also simplify interesting concepts like flattening the curve, Battlefield Triage and the basic reproduction number of a disease. I visit December 2019 and recount the story of Dr Lee in Wuhan China, and then study incidents in the USA in order to better understand the notions of crisis management, from preparation, to misinformation and leadership, as well as the various approaches governments took around the world. We brush lightly on the various conspiracy theories that came out about this virus, the toll it’s had on minorities most especially, as well as the economy, and the overall effects it has on our mental health in general. Finally, we get a vaccine 101, what are they, how do they work and how are they created. We list out and explain the various front runners producing these vaccines, and the steps that will follow, from manufacturing and storage, to the Covax global movement and the antivax movement. Sudan : Break the Wheel is my second Sudan episode, and it picks up where my first Sudan episode, Sudan : An Empirical Game of Thrones, left off. On today’s episode, I’m going to explain the June 3rd massacre in detail and its aftermath, the June 30th comeback, the formation of Sudan’s new government, the impact this revolution has had on Sudan politically, socially and economically, plus many other important developments concerning France, Saudi Arabia, the rebels, and I even have a few musical features queued up for you. This Halloween, the UK's new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is set to carry the UK out of the EU, with or without a deal, no buts or ifs. To some, after three years of Brexit overkill, this will be a welcomed development, to others however, his Brexit or die trying attitude is alarming and needs to be stopped. His Prorogation is already being challenged in court by MPs, and nobody, not even experts at this point, can predict what the bloody hell is going to happen. Now I know America is dubbed land of the free, but the European Union fights for similar precious values, values those who have it can sometimes take for granted, and values which are becoming more and more under threat, in both the EU and the US. Democracy, the rule of law, the respect of human rights and human dignity. Now consider those freedoms and then consider what’s happening right now in the the Middle East, in Africa, in Asia, in South America. You see, you can’t put a price on freedom. This is why these European Elections might seem like a bore, but they’re very important. I did my share of digging and I have to say, it turned out to be very entertaining! A Europe’s Got Talent if you will! But you be the judge! In under 30 minutes you’ll be a total pro, and who knows, you might just find yourself grabbing some popcorn and tuning in to EU speeches after this!

Sudan… Apart from the current revolution gaining a lot of coverage of late, you probably associate it with civil war, poverty, and well, not exactly your dream destination. Look, you’re right on some things. Sudan, like much of the African region, has been victim to corrupt governments and autocrats. It’s seen so much death and destruction. Beneath all of that however, there’s a fascinating history, a multifaceted people, and above all, a ray of hope. It’s a great time to be alive, because the changing times have caught up to Sudan, and the people are taking a stand and saying “Enough!”. Take a listen for yourself.
