In Revelation 2:12-17, Jesus sends a message to the church in Pergamos, or Pergamum according to some translations. This church had made serious compromises and allowed the false teachings of pagan religions to creep into the church. Christ desires that His church be pure and not allow any kind of compromise to take root. The church in Smyrna is a church that has undergone persecution already, and Jesus warns them that there is more persecution coming.
