HOW TO SURVIVE IN A CORRUPT ENVIRONMENT
Our text today is 2 Peter 2:7-10a: ...and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. — 2 Peter 2:7-10a After describing God's judgment on rebellion yesterday, Peter turns to God's rescue of Lot from Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot lived in a deeply corrupt culture. Day after day, he saw and heard behavior that violated God's design. Peter says his righteous soul was tormented by what surrounded him. But Lot's story is far more complicated. He made poor choices, placed himself dangerously close to corruption, and was not the best of husbands and fathers. Yet the point is clear: God knew the culture around Lot, understood his distress, and rescued him before the pending judgment. Then Peter reminds us of something we need to hear in a corrupt culture: "The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials." God never loses track of his people, even when they live in dark times. Sometimes the corruption around us feels overwhelming. We see compromise celebrated, truth rejected, and sin presented as freedom. Therefore, we may begin to wonder whether it is still possible to stay faithful. I have felt that tension myself. There are moments when the darkness around me seems stronger than the faith within me. But this text reminds me that God's ability to rescue me does not depend on my ability to see the way out. God always knows how to rescue. Sometimes when he rescues, it changes our circumstances. Sometimes he removes us from a destructive environment or provides a clear exit from temptation. At other times, he preserves us within the trial by strengthening us, giving us courage to remain faithful. But we must also be careful. Lot was distressed by the corruption around him, yet he chose to live dangerously close to it. We cannot repeatedly place ourselves close to temptation and then assume God's rescue excuses our lack of wisdom. Perhaps God has already shown you a step toward his freedom. Stop the secret conversation. Remove the source of temptation. Leave the harmful environment. Ask another believer for help. The same God who knows how to judge evil knows how to preserve his people. You are not invisible, abandoned, or beyond his reach no matter the cutlure. God knows if you are in your Sodom and Gomorrah. And he knows how to lead you out. DO THIS: Name one environment, relationship, or temptation in which you need God's rescue. Ask God to show you the next wise step, then take one practical action today instead of continuing to stand near what is pulling you away from him. ASK THIS: Where do you feel surrounded or pressured by spiritual compromise? Has God already shown you a step toward freedom that you have delayed taking? How can you remain compassionate toward people in a corrupt culture without becoming comfortable with its corruption? PRAY THIS: Lord, preserve me from the corruption around me and give me the courage to take the next step toward the rescue you provide. Amen PLAY THIS: Rescue
How can we cut corruption in government, procurement that generates kickbacks for local politicians? We could hire officials on merit. Across the developing world, many governments now do exactly that. Politicians hand out public resources, such as schools, jobs or contracts, in return for votes. Most research assumes that officials simply do what politicians ask. Sarah argues that officials have real control over who gets what, so politicians must first win them over.Hiring on merit. Sarah checks whether senior local officials in Ghana are hired on merit in three ways: expert surveys, a survey of the officials themselves, and staff records. Of those hired between 2010 and 2016, 67% sat an exam. When the governing party changed after the 2008 election, the kind of people hired into professional jobs did not change. The kind of people hired into low-skilled jobs did.Randomised response technique. A way to ask survey questions that people would rather not answer. Each person rolls a die where the interviewer cannot see it. On one number they must say "yes", on another "no", and otherwise they tell the truth. Nobody knows what any one person meant, but the odds of each roll are known, so the true share of "yes" answers can be calculated across the whole survey. Using this method, Sarah found that 46% of 864 senior officials in 80 local governments say contracts go to firms that fund the ruling party.Career control tools. Sarah's name for the ways politicians can shape an official's career after hiring: promotions, the work they are given, and where they are posted. Transfers are the main tool in Ghana. Officials who think their mayor can easily move them are more likely to report corruption. In a second survey question, 58% of officials said that exposing misconduct would likely get them transferred.Whistleblower protection. Ghana's Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720) protects people who report wrongdoing from punishment, including unwanted transfers, and can pay them a reward. But in a small local office it is almost impossible to stay anonymous, so the protection counts for little in practice.Local electoral competition. Competition between parties at national level is usually good for reform. Sarah finds that close contests at local level have the opposite effect. When seats are won and lost on small margins, campaigns cost more, and politicians have more reason to get money out of public contracts.India and Indonesia. Both countries hire senior officials through competitive exams. In India, members of the Indian Administrative Service change jobs on average every 16 months, and transfers become more likely when state leadership changes (Iyer and Mani 2012). Proposals to set a minimum time in post have not been adopted. In Indonesia, politicians also interfere in promotions.Promotion panels. In Ghana's local government service, promotions are decided by panels that include professional officials, so politicians rarely use them as a threat. Sarah suggests using similar panels to approve transfers, so no single politician can move an official at will.Campaign spending caps. Limits on how much candidates can spend. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa have none. India has them, but candidates routinely spend far more (Chauchard 2018). Sarah points to the UK's Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act of 1883, which set strict limits that were enforced in court. Pastor Tuang was returning to Lamzang after conducting religious activities in a nearby village. Bullets reportedly struck his chest, abdomen, and thigh. This appears to be the continuation of targeted attacks on Baptist pastors in the Chin State. Since the 2021 coup, the military has damaged or destroyed 340 churches and buildings owned by Christians. Ukraine knocked out 30% of Russia's oil refining industry Ukraine is crippling Russia's oil industry in a more recent series of drone attacks in the ongoing war. Another oil-refinery was hit over the weekend. The International Energy Association estimates that 30% of Russia's oil refining industry has been knocked out in recent attacks. America punishes countries who purchase Russian oil President Donald Trump signed the Lindsay Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 which Congress recently passed. The bill authorizes up to 100% tariffs on U.S. imports from countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. Specifically, China and India are the major buyers of Russian oil. Oil and gas make up about one-eighth of the Russian economy, and contribute one-quarter of the federal revenues for the country. Not surprisingly, the Russian Gross Domestic Product has been hit badly in 2025 and 2026 — with a 0.5% GDP growth expected this year, down from 4.5% in previous years. Putin's party won election after banning anti-war party The preliminary results of the Russian parliamentary elections held over the weekend are in. No surprise here. Vladimir Putin's party received 57% of the vote. That's up from 50% in 2021. That comes after the anti-war party was banned from the election, and anti-Kremlin figures were imprisoned, exiled, barred, or otherwise disappeared. All the remaining major parties broadly support Putin's government and the war. Condo prices are falling Condo prices have been dropping steadily in U.S. major markets since real estate peaked in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, Florida and California cities have seen a 30-42% drop in condo prices since 2022. Denver, Colorado condo prices have dipped 28%. U.S. deficit hit $2 trillion The U.S. federal deficit year to date hit $2 trillion at the end of August. The Congressional Budget Office is estimating a $2.1 trillion deficit for the year. That would amount to an 18% bump on the deficit over last fiscal year, and a 34% increase in deficit spending over President Biden's first year. Right now, according to the U.S. Debt Clock, America is burdened with a staggering $40 trillion debt. Meryl Streep will portray Aslan in new Narnia movie Now, Narnia is going woke. Turns out, the latest movie production of C.S. Lewis' Narnia tale, Magician's Nephew, will feature Aslan, the character who portrays Christ, as a female voice. Actress Meryl Streep is Aslan this time around, and Christians are not happy. Commentator Isabel Brown called this “a slap in the face to the genius of Lewis, but also a deliberate mockery of Christianity that is 100% intentional. So deeply disappointing.” Another online comment noted, “Had they actually read Narnia, and The Last Battle specifically, they would know that dressing [a donkey] up in a lion skinsuit does not end well. The director for this latest Narnia film, Greta Gerwig, is best known for directing the Barbie movie — an explicit diatribe on feminism. Let's keep in mind Galatians 6:7. It says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Supreme Court rejected Trump's mail-in ballot accountability The Trump administration continues to battle with the Supreme Court over mail-in ballots, as the high court rejected Trump's executive order that would have added verification codes to ballots received through the mail. The President responded on Truth Social. He wrote, “Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give, and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting ‘disaster,' which is a laughing stock all over the World.” And now, the FBI is assigning “election crisis coordinators” for all 56 field offices,” according to FBI Director Kash Patel. New York Times poll puts Democrats 8 points ahead of Republicans Speaking of the November 3rd election, early voting has already begun in certain states across America. The midterm elections will determine the balance of the U.S. House and Senate, both of which currently enjoy a Republican majority. A New York Times/Siena poll, conducted between September 8th-13th, puts Democrats eight points ahead of Republicans. Several Senate races have become especially tight and remain in the spotlight, with conservatives seeking to keep Texas red and supporting Republican Ken Paxton over Democrat James Talarico. Democrats are also looking at flipping a Senate seat in Maine. Anniversary of Martin Luther's translation of German New Testament And finally, yesterday marked the 504th anniversary of the first printing of Martin Luther's translation of the German New Testament. That's right, back in 1522, Luther finished one of his most precious life works. Referencing this monumental feat, church historian Philip Schaff wrote, “The most important and useful work of [Luther's] whole life, is the translation of the New Testament, by which he brought the teaching and example of Christ and the Apostles to the mind and heart of the Germans in life-like reproduction. It was a republication of the Gospel. Football is officially back—and the fantasy football scandals have already begun.
In this episode of The Bible Explained, Jenn dives into Esther chapter six, a chapter that's often considered one of the funniest in the Bible. But don't let the humor fool you - this chapter is also a pivotal moment in the story of Esther, and it's full of unexpected twists and turns: King Ahasuerus has a hard time sleeping after Esther's banquet. He orders the book of records to be brought to him. The king learns about Mordecai's part in saving his life but he never received recognition or a reward for his actions. The king is puzzled by this oversight and decides to take action. Haman, who's been plotting against Mordecai, comes early to the court to ask for Mordecai to die, but gets humiliated instead. Mordecai remains humble and unassuming, even as he's given the royal treatment. This episode is a great reminder that God is always at work, even in the most unexpected ways. The conversation delves into the complex history of foreign intervention in Afghanistan, with Kawusi arguing that the nation's "Gordian knot" of problems stems from a cycle of ethnic grievances and reliance on external benefactors rather than internal accountability. They explore the failures of the previous Republic, the self-interested legacy of Afghan warlords, and the strategic nature of the current Taliban regime. Ultimately, Kawusi emphasizes that long-term stability requires a shift away from "quick wins" and toward grassroots education and a unified Afghan identity that transcends historical divisions and foreign agendas. Naweed is a retired colonel who served with the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces, beginning with the Afghan Commandos in 2002 and then again from 2019 with the Afghanistan National Police. Before the fall of Kabul in 2021, he oversaw support and outreach to over 130,000 police families across Afghanistan's 34 provinces. Before that, he served as Director General of International Cooperation at Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior, where he led the ministry's development effort in rebuilding the Afghanistan National Police within the mandate of the Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA), a 22-nation reconstruction fund. He founded the Kabul Institute, an Afghan-led policy and research organization focused on governance, accountability, and peacebuilding in Afghanistan, and teaches at the University of São Paulo. He is the author of The Bleeding Nation: Superpowers, Ethnic Politics, and Afghanistan's Collapse and The Brave and the Corrupt, forthcoming by McFarland Publishers. Naweed also serves as COO of EOPA (Elected Officials to Protect America), where he oversees the organization's overall operations and strategic direction.
