This podcast is focused on my life history.
This episode touches on the final steps toward leaving Chieko and starting work in Japan. It offers brief descriptions on how I settled down in Japan, and got things rolling with Suzuki. It was definitely a period of mix emotions. On one hand, the divorce. And on the other end, a start of my very fulfilling ten-year journey with Suzuki and GM Japan. I have a feeling I will eventually revist this period again in the future to re-examine myself as an individual, and reflect on the experience.
天から降って来たような、ドイツで新工場立ち上げプロジェクトに参加するお誘い。カナダからデトロイトへ戻ってきて一年も立たないうちに、オペル赴任が決まりました。それから、七年後、オペルでの色々な役職を経由して、日本赴任が決定しました。今回のエピソードはこの移転の時期の思い出、ヨーロッパ、そしてオペルへの感謝の意、などを語りました。人生、ドイツへ行くまで経験したことがなかったヨーロッパ、オペル内でも、これも未経験の新分野での仕事、責任。周りの人に助けてもらわなっから、絶対遂行できる事ではありませんでした。この終わりを起点として、GMでの最後の15年勤務がスタートする出発点に今自分はいます。
Here I am in the final quarter of the 20th century, things are happening. I am heading to Japan. My family isn't sure at this point. I finished my seven+ years in Europe, starting with the initial assignment to be part of the Eisenach project team, four years in Zurich, and ending with the Agila responsibility (which I carried with me to Japan). Thinking back (24 years later), this puts me at the half way point of my GM career. My last phase is starting, the remaining 15 years. Asia was the stompiong ground, and here I am, embarking on a journey that nearly as good as the time I had in Europe. This episode is one of reflection of the European years and how I arrived at this point.
Part 1を録音したのが今年の三月。月日が経つのは早いものです。今回のエピソードでヨーロッパでのアギーラの開発話を終了。現場での出来事、スズキとオペルの企業文化の違い、それに対応しようとするエンジニア達。ちょっと地味な話ですが、それらを経験することにより自分も色々勉強させてもらいました。
Last episode on Opel Agila project, a joint program with Suzuki Motor Company. The episode covers topics that are a bit esoteric. Hibi san and Arno, both involved in the project from the very beginning, shared a ton of input based on their experience: both parties learning from each other, highlighting differences though both are car companies. From here, my career heads to Asia. First to Japan, and then to China. The march continues.
スズキとの話が始まったのがスイスに赴任中の１９９５の後半。1997に覚書が交わされ、開発が徐々に開始。スズキ側も浜松に派遣された八名近くのオペルチームを快く受け入れてくれました。ファミリーの経緯としては、次女のメラニーがミシガン大学に入学。それと同時に智恵子と真悟も一時アメリカに帰ったんですが、僕が正式にVLEに任命され、ドイツに戻ったのをきっかけに又一緒に住む事になりました。この時期の僕はドイツと日本を行ったり来たり。フランクフルトからプロジェクトを見ていました。今回はスズキの商品企画にいた日比さんのコメントも含めて現場での話を中心にエピソードを構成しました。
This episode is a quick summary of this new program covering key pieces from MoU to design to production preparedness. Family issues also entered big time as I transfered my work post from Switzerland to Germany to take on the responsibility as the VLE for the Agila program. As always, lots of ups and downs. But we now have a team set up in Japan; in fact secured a corner section on Suzuki's engineering floor. I bet that had never happened before.
スイスに赴任後、各種の事業に関わってきました。それと同時に会社の方は新たな車の開発に関してスズキとの協議が平行して進行。何をしていようと、常に僕にはスズキとの過去があったので、いつも呼ばれてその話に参加していました。幸いな事にその話も最後には合意にいたり、スズキを中心とした商品開発プロジェクトが開始。その時点でTDCのトップだったピーター・ハネンバーガーからVLEとしての役割を与えられました。今回のエピソードはどのようにこの話が煮詰まっていったのか、又どのような体制が作られオペル側がそのプロジェクトをサポートしたかなど、プロジェクト当初の話が中心です。僕自身、ドイツへの再赴任、新しい世界へ足を踏み込んだんですが、それと同時に自動車業界を揺るがす事件が発生。それがきっかけとなって僕のキャリアが違う方向へ激動的に、思いもよらなかった方向へ動き始めた時期でもありました。
Though regardless of my formal position, I had always been pulled into GM Europe's discussions with Suzuki from the very beginning. As this potential collaboration became closer to a reality, I found myself basically devoting most of my time and emergy to ongoing discussions. Then once Opel and Suzuki agreed to do the program, I was assigned as the European head of the program. The vehicle was called Opel Agila, and I became the Regional Vehicle Line Executive of this joint program. I would not call this a joint vehicle "development" program since Suzuki took the lead in engineering, however, the program required significant interactions between the two companies involving many memorable and talented people on both sides. And my role in this program eventually moved to Japan as a result of a dynamic shift in the reformation of the global automotive industry sparked by a merger between Chrysler and Daimler Benz. It could not get any more exciting than this, and I found myself right in the thick of alliance formation discussions. This episode describes the beginning of the Opel Agila program and my involvement in it.
前回のエピソードの続きです。スイス赴任中の後半に新しい仕事を任命され、又ドイツへ赴任という事になりました。メラニーはスイスの高校を卒業し、ミシガン大学に行くことになり、一時家族も一緒にデトロイトへ引き揚げて行きました。宗教の事でぶつかり合いが多かったこの頃、この一時的な別れは必要だったかもしれません。ドイツに又移るという事になったとき、智恵子と真悟、そして一時期的だけだったんですが、愛ちゃんも一緒に来ることになりました。ヨーロッパでの最後の一年。仕事の上ではここから又色々進展していくんですが、智恵子との関係の結末はこの時期すでに目に見えていました。
アイゼナッハに居た時の時期も含めて、自分は三つの分野で役割を与えられました。ビジネス・プラン・ディプロイメント（BPD)を含めた研修の総括、商品（新車）開発進行の管理、そして最後はオペルのスズキと共同して開発した新車、オペル・アギーラ・プログラムのVLEとしての任命でした。 今回のエピソードはアギーラの責任者になるまでの道なりをまとめた話です。 トヨタから引き抜かれた中田さんの影響で研修部のダイレクターとしての仕事の'範囲が一段と拡大し、そこで一緒にやった日本流の目標管理方式の導入がオペルの技術センター内でも受け入れら受け入れられ商品開発に応用されるようになったわけです。 それらの仕事で多忙で多様な毎日を繰り返していたんですが、それを支えてくれたGMIOとオペルの幹部と直属のボス達、いつも何度も言うんですが、本当に恵まれた環境で仕事ができました。 勿論すべて本社スタッフという立場でやっていたんですが、工場監査から新車開発と現場に直結した役割を果たせたことが強く思い出に残っています。最初はトヨタ流の生産方式導入を頑固拒んでいた頭の固い現場のリーダーが時間が立つにつれて理解を示してくれたことや、ドイツ人とスズキエンジニアとの交流の場に身を置けたことなど、新しい分野で気が張った毎日を過ごす事ができました。
Summer is here, and not so easy to devote a good quiet time to work on episodes. This one took almost two months to complete since the last one. Sorry for the delay. I have talked about being in Switzerland and my training role before and this episode sort of covers the transition into other areas, namely vehicle tracking and eventually to actual vehicle development. Nakada san who was recruited from Toyota by GMIO really served as my mentor and played a key role in expanding my involvement in those new areas. He was very instrumental in capapulting my career progression. As I note toward the end of this episode, I eventually move on to a joint vehicle program Suzuki, which in turn takes my career path toward Japan; a very dynamic stage in my times at GM.
今振り返ってみると、僕がスイスに赴任した時期は自動車業界が激動の時期を迎えていました。そのお蔭か、自分はスイスへアイゼナッハ生産方式の基本をGMIO全体に浸透させるための研修ダイレクターとしての役割を果たす為に赴任したんですが、本社で色々な動きと接している中に他の分野でも同時に色々手を付けて行くことになって、職を変えていくことになりました。社内の動き、又社外で始まった企業再編成の時代への突入。その波にうまく乗る事ができ、僕のキャリアもその時点から思わぬ道筋へと進んでいきます。今回のエピソードはその環境の中でどのようにリーン生産方式に関するトレーニングをを展開していったかについて重点的にカバーしています。
I came to Zurich to take on a role as Director of Training and Organizational Development, thinking this assignment would last, at most, three years, and I would move on. Around this time, GM embarked on three major initiatives, and here in Europe, similar changes followed. One was the establishment of a position called Vehicle Line Executive. Another one was the introduction of a concept, Brand Management. And lastly, Opel took steps to closely monitor vehicle development processes in a much more transparent way than ever before. At the same time, the whole industry saw a trend toward alliance formations, primarily for the reason of sharing resources and eliminate redundancies. Though I was in the training area, by virtue of being close to those leading these changes, I got swept up in this dynamic. The Zurich assignment became more than just a three-year stint as a trainig leader. In this episode, however, the content zeroes in on the training role and the scope of actions undertaken primarily in Europe to spread the Eisenach lean production principles.
初めて経験したヨーロッパへの赴任、オペルアイゼナッハの工場立ち上げ事業も自分の役割が終わりに近づき、次はどこへと思っていた矢先でした。ボスのトムも色々話をつけてくれて、複数の可能性を検討したんですが、最後にはスイスにあるGMの海外事業本部へ移ることになりました。今回はGMIOの組織、GMの中での立場、それにまつわった人たち、自分がかかわっていく分野についての序文的なエピソードの構成になりました。最初から何年という話はなかったんですが、あれこれ三分野に関わり、あっという間の五年でした。
This was my foray into the world of GM's international business. Over the five years spent in Zurich and Frankfurt, I covered three areas: introducing lean productiont principles to GMIO plants within Europe and beyond; developing a streamlined tracking process for new vehicle development; and leading the development team for a brand new Opel vehicle in partnership with Suzuki Motor Company. This episode describes the working environment inside GMIO operations and players that I came across. Working with and for people with tremendous talent and management capability, getting involved in game changing projets, and having opportunities to travel to markets worldwide. The assignment in Zurich with GMIO turned out to be much more global that I had imagined going into the job. Again, it was a career enhancing and professionally very fulfilled phase in my time with GM. Already having had the Germany experience behind them, my family was crusing in Switzerland, enjoying every monent of their stay.
思いもよらなかった、アイゼナッハへのカナダから本社に戻ってすぐ一年後の転勤。その責務も果たし、又前回みたいにデトロイトへ戻るか、又は他のオペルの工場でのアイゼナッハ生産方式導入にかかわるかなどの、次の移転先の検討がいつものように始まりました。GM内での移動を優先的に勿論一番望んでおり考えていましたが、外部からも誘致があり、色々検討していた矢先、当時スイス、チューリッヒに本部を構えていたGMIOからの嬉しいお誘い。仕事内容もアイゼナッハ方式をGMIO管轄の工場での展開と言う、まさにドイツでの仕事の延長で、そのオファーを喜んで受け入れました。最初ドイツに転勤する事になった時は家族に大反対されましたが、今回は快くヨーロッパ滞在を延長することを受け入れてくれました。今回のエピソードはこのドイツからスイスへの移動を語った物です。このスイスへの配置が自分自身のGMのキャリアの中でも最も重要な展開に通じる起点でもありました。1985年にGMに入社してからすでに10年、その間本社勤務がすでに二回、カナダとドイツと二度の海外赴任とあっという間の時間でした。
Thinking back, Eisenach was a whirlwind tour. And, now a time to move on to the next. Fortunately, an opportunity opened up to take up a new position at GM's international headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. This time, I had no trouble convincing my family to move with me to another European location for the next 3 to 4 years. They thrived in Germany, and definitely wanted to stay longer. Ai chan had to go back to Michigan to enter a college, but Melanie, Shingo, Chieko and I moved on to this beautiful country. 2022年もカウントダウンに入った最近。このポッドキャストも、ライフストーリーは今回お休みして一年を振り返ってみました。コロナが理由だった面も確かにありましたが、比較的静かな一年でした。皆さんもこの一年、色々なことがあったと思います。家族が中心に展開したブランウン家の2022年。こうして又皆と一緒に元気に2023年の新年を迎えられることを感謝しています。にこは海外留学もありの大学二年、三唄は中学に入学。夫婦二人、のんびりリタイヤなどとは言っていられません。でも子供達こそが僕らの生活のエンジン、リズムを作ってくれています。彼らが僕らの生活の軸、それで今は十分です。皆さんも心身健康を維持し、良いお年を迎えてください。
I wanted to take a break from my life story, and look back on the year that is coming to an end in a few weeks. COVID still put a damper on our plans, but it was a year filled with family milestones, sombrer moments and joy. This was the year Niko left the house to attend a school on the East coast, Skye discovered baseball and flying, and us parents just trying to keep up with them, doing our best to be part of their wonderful journeys ahead. On behalf of the Brown family, I want to wish all of you a wonderful 2023 filled with what your heart may desire. Happy Holidays, everyone. Looking forward to our interactions in 2023 and beyond.
This is the last episode of my 3 part Eisenach series, focusing on the work aspect. Dealing with people who have been brought up differently under a set of ideologies I am not very familiar with was intimidating. But in the end, I realized good people are good people regardless of which system they function under, and that people anywhere can appreciate efficiency when they are exposed and taught. From recruitment to assessment to training, our team basically replicated what we had impremented at CAMI in Canada in a different language. And the end result was a great team that turned Opel Eisenach into the most efficient plant in Europe in no time. To get there, we had to go through a transformational process where production principles that originated in Japan had to find home in Germany. I had lots of help from Opel managers on site to our local hires that seized the process and turn them into something which was eventually called a set of Opel Eisenach production principles. I spent nearly three years in Germany, no doubt the most intense period in my life in terms of education, getting caught up in the winds of geopolitics, cultural exposure and friendship building. Now I am off to another assignment in a different European location bidding farewell to Eisenach, a place and people I will never forget.
我らブラウン家、ドイツへ家族揃って赴任。自らやはり仕事に没頭していたので、あまり大きく世界の流れをとらえる事ができませんでしたが、今振り返ってみると歴史的な瞬間に立ち会う事ができた、家族にしても思い出深い経験でした。フランクフルトの郊外の片田舎に家族の家を構え、僕は工場に近い東に200km行ったバッド・ハースフェルドという国境の町で週末を除くアパート生活を始めました。ミシガンとカナダと同様、家族はエホバの証人の仲間に助けられて、順調に生活が回り始め、子供たちはフランクフルト・インターナショナル・スクールで国際的な感覚を吸収し始めました。この経験が彼らの将来に向けての人間形成に深い影響を施しています。共産主義の破壊が始まり、世界の転換期の一つを現場で経験。非常に心に深く残る人生の一過程を進み始めました。仕事の方もこれがきっかけで、一段と国際色が濃いキャリアへと進展。GMに入社後六年目の出来事です。今回は仕事自体についてはあまり話はしていませんが、アイゼナッハでの経験は社会学的観点なしでは語ることができない経験でした。チャンスがあったら、聞いてくれると嬉しいです。
Our family had arrived in Germany, and our great Europeam journey commenced. Though just being there, initmately involved in the project really did not allow me to look at the big picture of what was happening around that time, looking back, it was a very historical moment for Germany and the world, My family settled down in Frankfurt while I got myself an apartment near the Eisenach plant on the West side. Thanks to the support of Chieko's Jehovah's Witness friends and the kids being in Frankfurt Internaitonal School (FIS), life there started to get its own momentum. Every day was an experience, and an eye opener. I talk a lot about societal aspects of being in Germany in this episode, which is an integral and big part of the Eisenach meomry still deeply implanted in my mind. カナダから本社へ戻り、アジア・パシフィック部門へ在籍することになり一年ちょっとしたある日。急に副社長のマクダニエルの部屋に呼ばれ、”CAMIのボスのトム・ラソーダから連絡があり、東ドイツの新工場立ち上げのプロジェクトにリックが欲しいと誘われているがどうだ”と聞かれれました。驚きでした。振り返ってみれば、この瞬間が自分のGMでのキャリア進行方向をがらりと変えたんですが、その当時色々な事が頭に浮かびました。アジア分野に徹するべきか、又生産の世界にもどるのか。カナダからミシガンに戻って、まだたったの一年。家族はどう思うか。自分なりに随分悩みました。でも最後には家族も理解してくれ、自分自身も僕の事を信じてくれて、是非東ドイツでも一緒に手助けして欲しいと誘ってくれたトムのオファーを感謝し、最後には受ける決心をしました。勿論新工場立ち上げという仕事自体、非常にやりがいがある責任とCAMIを通して十分理解していました。誰にでも与えられるチャンスでもありません。それと同時に共産圏が破壊し、ドイツが統合したあの時点で東ドイツに足を踏み入れることが出来るという事は政治学を勉強した自分にとっても非常に興味がある事でした。今回のエピソードは突破口を開いたマクダニエル氏との話から、その後自分がヨーロッパで内面的に思ったこと、外面で経験した各出来事について語り始めています。チャンスがあったら是非聞いてください。
Having spent just over one year back at GM's Asia Pacific Division located at the headquarters, I received an offer to move to Germany. Tom LaSorda, my boss in Canada (CAMI) was given the responsibility to launch a new Opel assembly plant in Eisenach, and took steps to reassemble his CAMI team for the project. Again, this offer to join his team there was the best thing. Having joined GM to work with Kei on projects specifically related to Japan, I now had this opportunity to branch off, and again repeat the CAMI experience. I was now in the world of lean production again, and loved the challenge. The big difference was we were now on our own without the support of Suzuki. This opportunity also gave me an unbelievable opportunity to experience a historical social transformation affecting Germany and the entire communist bloc. I was right there as the town of Eisenach transformed itself from an old East Germany town to a thriving border town. I felt the sentiments of people and witnessed the title wave that swept the whole town. This episode is an intro to Germany, more specifically to Eisenach, and about the early days of me getting set up.
カナダから戻り、本社のアジア・パシフィック部門に配置され、本社スタッフとして通常の予算、事業計画作成などをビジネス・プランニングマネージャーとしてこなしていました。ある日、ボスのマクダニエル副社長に呼ばれ、いすゞ本社へ出向きあるGMの意向を伝えて欲しいと指示がでました。その意向と言うのが、筆頭株主としてGMがいすゞの経営にもっと深く参画したい、という要望でした。自分自身、キャリアを通してこのようなアライアンスに関する話し合いの場に何度も出くわしましたが、今回が第一ステップでした。その当時はただ、いすゞ・GMの事業提携の相乗効果をフルに展開し、自然の流れでGMが一段といすゞの経営に関わっていくという事を頭にいれて、いすゞ側の沢山の幹部と話し合えることができました。将来の為にも非常に役立った特別アサイメントでした。他メーカーと一緒にやって行くのに必要な案件は何であるか、非常に勉強させてもらいました。このアライアンスの話は、今後のスズキがらみの話で集中してカバーしますが、この時得た感触が後になって役にたった気がしないでもないです。
カナダでの工場立ち上げ業務も、自分の役割は終了。次の赴任先を決めるプロセスが開始。生産分野へ残り、リーン・プロダクションをGM内部で広げる試みに参画するのか、自分の腕をかってくれた他の会社へ移るのか、それともGMに入った時の趣旨にそって日本、又はアジア関連の仕事を追求するのか。それらがチョイスでした。この時点からGMに25年ぐらい居残る事になるのですが、大企業内の渡り術はどうすればいいのか、など考えさせられた時期でもありました。又この期間はヨーロッパへ移る前の一年間で、一番官僚的な仕事をやって時間を費やしていました。淡々と仕事をこなしていたGMコーポレート・スタッフという自分の時期。でも結局は次の本当に世界が広がっていった部門への配置につながる、いい機会でもありました。
After almost three years, my assignment at CAMI in Canada came to an end. And it was time for me to move on. Among the few choices presented, I opted to go back to Detroit to be part of GM's Asia Pacific Division. My job description was Business Planning Manager, and the new boss, Tom McDaniel, tasked me to keep him abreast of the monthly performance of each business unit in the region. In addition, he also gave me a special assignment: go talk to Isuzu; gauge their sentiment on how GM and Isuzu could work more effectively; seek their feedback on GM's deisre to be more directly involved in the management of the company. I stayed with Tom only briefly, covering just a little over one year, but this Isuzu assignment, which focused on a business relationship, turned out to be the highlight of my return to Detroit, and an experience which helped me in future alliance-related job assignments. Then one day, I get a call from Tom LaSorda which results in an unexpected career projectory.
話すことが山とあり、整理に苦労し、最後には総括編まできてしまいました。話の繰り返しも少しありましたが、付き合っていただきどうもありがとうございます。仕事の内容から、人との出会い、アメリカを離れる機会、新しい土地の経験などあり、充実した三年間でした。今でもCAMIは操業しているし、一緒に立ち上げに加わった仲間たちが、最近リタイヤしていく話を時々、風の便りで聞きます。又CAMIを基盤として、GMの内部で活躍した仲間もいるし、他メーカー、他業種に移っていった仲間たちの顔が目に浮かびます。GMに入って本当によかったと思った三年間でした。次回からは、又デトロイトへ戻り、本社で働く自分を描くことになります。次から次への思わぬキャリアの進展、能力さえあれば、最後はやはり人が全て。ここまでは、Never a Dull Momento のGMでした。
E14、CAMIシリーズ、パートII. 工場経験一切ない僕を向かいいれてくれたCAMI. トレーニングマネージャーとして、採用から研修分野を工場長のトム・ラソーダから仰せつかり、担当。今回のエピソードでは、主に、皆の協力を得ながら仕事を進めていく自分、そして仕事内容を描写しています。スズキの流れ生産方式を導入するにあたって、CAMIに来た皆に何をわかってもらわなければいけないのか、どのようなスキルを吸収し、活用して工場の生産性をあげていくのか。結束力があるチームと一緒に資料を作り上げ、研修を実施し、又トレーナーたちを育てていくことは非常に的がはっきり定められた、やりがいのある仕事内容でした。当時アメリカでは日本の自動車メーカーの工場進出が始まり、各地域で、各メーカーが総力をあげて、立ち上げの準備をしていました。トヨタとスズキと手を組んだGMだけじゃなく、アメリカ大陸でのリーン・プロダクションの歴史の始まりの時期でした。
GMに来たのはいいけど、国内経済の不況、自動車業界の停滞、日本メーカーの追い上げと会社は入社二年後危機に直面。業績回復のための大幅合理化が会社全体で始まり、ほぼ新入社員であった僕がいた本社部門にも波が到来。せっかく家族もミシガンに落ち着き、これからと言う時だったので、とまどいました。自分で決めた事、デトロイトへ来た事自体は後悔しなかったですが、何しろ新天地。さあ、どうしましょう、という感じでした。でも最後にはGMカナダが救ってくれました。GMのトヨタと設立したNUMMIの次の日本メーカーとの合弁の第二弾として設立された、スズキ自動車会社との新合弁会社、CAMI. そこが誘ってくれて、やっと生活にもなれたアンアーバーを離れ、カナダに引っ越しする決心をしました。その時ここCAMIで出会ったGMとスズキの人材が、僕のその先30年のGMキャリアに大きな影響を及ぼす人たちだったなど、ただ職が決まった嬉しさだけで、そんなこと一瞬も思いませんでした。長い道を歩むにあたって、これがなかったらどうなっていたかと今思わせる、CAMIへの赴任は重要な、ライフ・チェンジング・イベントでした。
This is the second and final part of my days at the Suzuki-GM JV CAMI. Having come to work for General Motors, being at CAMI really felt like working for a car company. This experience really helped my involvement in various other disciplines in the days ahead. CAMI was a great place in terms of the task at hand (plant launch), working as an expat in a foreign country(Canada), learning experience(Japanese production system), long lasting networking (Tom LaSorda and Suzuki) and of course, all the friends and colleagues I have encountered while there. I finally got my first stripe as a car company employee, to say the least. After CAMI, nothing scared me about working in any discipline within GM.
Only after two years after arriving at GM, I am forced into a decision due to financial difficulties at GM: leave GM or find another position within GM. Had no desire to leave GM, but also did not know if I, a new expendable new recruit, could stay within the company. GM was mired in recessions, and heads were rolling. Thankfully, GM of Canada came to my rescue, and took me in as part of the start-up team at its joint venture with Suzuki, CAMI or Canadian Automotive Manufacturing, Inc. This was my first expousure to Suzuki, a defining moment in my career progression that followed.
海外事業開発部に所属し、井沢さんの元でこの二年間色々な事やらしてもらいました。オークション、エンジンの選択、日本の部品メーカーと合弁交渉、日本での車の拡販。将来非常に重要になるスズキとの関係。そのきっかけが出来たのも本社にいたこの時期でした。新入社員で初めは普通はおとなしく、組織とか業界を勉強しなければいけない時期に、色んな世界に足を突っ込むことができ、挫折なども勿論経験しましたが、活気があった二年間でした。今振り返ると将来へはばたくスプリングボードに足をかけ始めた時期でした。
After joining GM's overseas project development group, I started to take on various projects. Our group functioned almost as a group of consultants, each handling his or her area of interest, working with other staffs and operatations. Kei and I were the Japan duo. Without much knowledge about the industry, with Kei's support, I started my own involvement with various projects. This episode traces my involvement in various initiatives that covered vehicle auctions, new engine selection/development, component businesses, vehicle assembly project, and selling cars in Japan, and meeting people that eventually helped shape my direction and career in the years to come.

Our family has completed a long trek from Los Angeles, arriving in Ann Arbor, Michingan in summer of 1985. I am now at a significant point in my life, emarking on a personal journey with General Motors. I had no idea how that would turn out. In this episode, you will hear me talking about getting my feet wet, feeling awed by the enormity of GM. But it was a good start. No regrets. Good support all around, both personally and professionally. I hope you enjoy this introductory piece.

USC卒業後、ロスで日米貿易収支バランス改善を目的とした多種のプロジェクトに参加。日米両政府が日本でボーティーク・アメリカという対日貿易拡大プロジェクトを遂行することに合意した際、そのプロジェクトに当時所属していた会社を通じマーケティング・ディレクターとして参加。今回はそのプロジェクトに参加した経験をもとにエピソードを作成しました。この時で来た人脈が何れ僕をGMにつながる道に導いてくれました。

1974、智英子とのアメリカ生活開始。長女愛が1975に誕生。その翌年USCを卒業。就職困難な時期友達の紹介でロスのJETROへ就職。日米貿易戦争の最中、広報会社、プレスエイド社へ移り、対日輸出拡大を奨励する事業などに参画。1985年にGMに入社するまでの道のりの第一歩を踏む。
大学卒業後すぐ智恵子と結婚。日本へ一時戻るものの、大学院に通うために八か月後にはカルフォルニアへリターン。仕事と新婚生活と勉学の両立をし始めた日々の描写。
Life filled with just work and schooling. Ai, our first, was born on March 27. Working the midnight shift and attending school was not easy but I had a goal. Upon graduating from USC, the labor market was weak which led me to an employment with JETRO, Japan's trade promoting organization. And, the rest is hiostory, leading me all the way to General Motors eight years later.
Getting married to Chieko right after college. Stepping into the adult world. Spending several months in Japan before returning to Los Angeles with Chieko to start our family. First step - USC.

Finally arrives in America and starting the remaining years of high school.
